Whitt Callahan, a senior infielder at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, joins Carter Mize on this episode of Tiger Alumni Player Spotlight.A Southern Indiana Rawlings Tigers alum, Callahan played four full summer seasons with the Tigers from 15U to 18U before beginning his collegiate career at Spalding.Reflecting on his time with the Tigers, Callahan shared: "I played all my high school summers with the Tigers. I'm really glad I did—it gave me the reps and exposure I needed to connect with college coaches and make my way into college baseball."Callahan's path to college baseball is unconventional in today's era of frequent transfers. Preparing for his final season of eligibility, he has stuck at Spalding University throughout his collegiate journey. The senior infielder found Spalding after the Southern Indiana Rawlings Tigers held a private workout for Spalding's coaching staff to see.“There were about 10 of us that attended this mini-camp that Spalding was high on. After that workout they brought me into the locker room and offered me a spot. In Division 3 there are no athletic scholarships so we didn't talk about any scholarship money obviously but I really liked the campus and facilities. It didn't take me long to commit at all.”The infielder has played in 75 games over 3 seasons for Spalding playing both third base, and second base.“I've played a large majority of third base here, with some spot starts at second base sprinkled in. If you hit, you play so I just play wherever they put me.” Winning is a hallmark of Spalding's baseball program. The NCAA Division III team has captured back-to-back SLIAC conference titles, with Callahan playing a key role in their success. In the 2024 SLIAC conference final, he hit a two-run home run, bringing his season total to a career."I never thought about transferring out of Spalding. I love it here—they push me every day, and I've become a much better player since I first arrived. Plus, we win all the time, which always makes it fun," he said.As Whitt enters his final season of eligibility, the Rawlings Tigers community wish him the best as he looks to cap his time at spalding off with an all-SLIAC caliber season.

Before co-founding 3 Fold, Leah worked for the NCAA including six years as the Director of Division III.  During our conversation, Leah details why relationships are key to a leader's success, the role and importance of a mutually beneficial mentee-mentor relationship, and how being benevolent becomes easier over time. She boils her leadership philosophy down to Vision and Accountability and that the work is so much easier (and better) when done with a group.  I love how she describes taking risks in her career and why "Challenging the Process" must be done with intentionality, care, and with the aim of improving - not just complaining.  The episode concludes with my lecture on chapter 4 of the 9th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I discuss behavioral approaches to studying leadership, the DISC behavioral profile, and highlight the Blake-Mouton Leadership Grid.  There's so much leadership gold in the episode. Today I talked to Ben Kaplan about his new book (co-authored with Danny Parkins) Pipeline to the Pros: How D3 Small-College Nobodies Rose to Rule the NBA (Triumph Books, 2024). Jeff Van Gundy. Brad Stevens. Frank Vogel. Mike Budenholzer. Tom Thibodeau. Sam Presti. Leon Rose. Before you knew his name, before he drafted your favorite player, before he guided your team to a championship, he had a playing career of his own at an NCAA Division III college. He didn't play for fortune – the NBA was out of reach, and his school didn't even give athletic scholarships. He didn't play for fame – his games weren't televised, and the stands were rarely full. Whatever the motivation, he simply couldn't give up the game of basketball. And that didn't change after graduation, when it was time to pick a career path. For the first time in league history, NBA coaches and general managers are just as likely to have played Division III basketball as they are to have played in the NBA. While the number of former D3 players working in the NBA is higher than ever, small college alums have served in leadership positions since the league's founding. They shaped the NBA into what it is today, playing integral roles in the Lakers' initial success in Los Angeles, the inception of several expansion franchises, the creation of the popular All-Star Weekend dunk contest, the globalization of the league, and more. Their improbable and inspiring journeys tell a bigger story – the history of small college athletics, the evolution of coaching and management in the NBA, and the hiring practices in the most competitive fields. Their alma maters were small, but their impact on the game, and the implications of their success, loom large. Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020.  The Coach Mo Golf Show welcomes six-time NCAA Division-III West Region Coach of the Year and a nine-time Northwest Conference Coach of the Year, Coach MJ McCloskey to the show. Coach MJ started the George Fox Women's Golf program from the ground-up in 2006 and led them to their first NCAA DIII National title in 2023 at Mission Inn, in Howie-in-the-Hills, FL in 2023.  It was a dramatic, controversial, and eventful Championship that flooded social media and national news with videos and news on the tournament's controversial pin position on #6. In this episode you'll hear all about the championship, the controversy, as well as discussions I have with Coach McCloskey's new book, "How Girls Win." Coach MJ McCloskey Bio:In 2006, McCloskey launched the first George Fox University women's golf program and since then has led the team to prestige as one of the most dominant in the country bringing home 7 NCAA trophies including winning the 2023 NCAA D-III Women's Golf National Championship. Her team was only the third NCAA D-III Golf team west of the Mississippi to win the NCAA National Championship To date, the program has won 97 collegiate tournaments and has been recognized in four separate seasons (including this season) as the top-ranked team in the country. Coach MJ has a marketing degree from the Univ. of Oregon and an MBA from the University of Portland. The team has also won 13 straight Northwest Conference titles.. The program also boasts a NCAA Individual National Champion, two NCAA Individual National RunnerUps, two National Players of the Year, three NCAA Freshman Player of the Year honorees, 27 Women Golf Coaches Assn (WGCA) All Americans, 34 WGCA All-Region team members, 10 NWC Player of the Year honorees, 57 All-NW Conference players, and 24 WGCA All-American Scholar winners. Players from her program have qualified for the US Women's Amateur as well as for the LPGA Portland Classic event. In 2013, McCloskey was promoted to the role of Director of Golf for George Fox, one of the first women to be named to that position in NCAA Division-III and oversees the development of both the men's and women's golf teams at the university. For McCloskey, it's never been about awards but helping young women find their greatness. Her passion is to help student-athletes grow stronger and realize that anything is possible with a positive mindset, strong work ethic, and a passionate desire to learn. McCloskey served 2 terms as D-III Director on the Board of Directors for the Women Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). Garrett Campbell was hired full-time as an assistant coach in 2016. He officially became the FC head football coach in 2019. Coach Campbell is no stranger to Fullerton College as his father, Dick Campbell, was on the Hornet coaching staff for 15 seasons during the Hal Sherbeck years. As a young boy, Garrett served as Fullerton's ball boy and then later grew to become a quarterback and wide receiver for the Hornets from 1995-96. The network dropped a couple of episodes for you to check out - the biggest was Episode 2 of the Etched in Stone series on Gray Simons called Seven. Shane Sparks fired out a show with Alex Marinelli on the Go Earn It Podcast, which has been a great addition to the network. Bob Bowlsby, inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame this summer as an Outstanding American, is returning to where his AD career started - Northern Iowa - as the Panthers named him the school's interim AD on Wednesday, taking over for David Harris, who is leaving for Tulane. This one's amusing since Tulane got its last AD from UNI - Troy Dannen. He recently left Tulane for Washington. So let's see if Dannen, a friend of wrestling, or so it seemed at times in his past, will be proactive and bring wrestling back to Washington. None of that is in the show, just my own personal thoughts. TO THE SCORES! In Division II, top-ranked Lander beat Mount Olive 43-3. The Bearcats had SEVEN bonus victories and had ranked wins by Junior Downing at 149 and Brandon Matthews at 174. Downing used a third-period takedown and riding time to slip past 10th-ranked Dallas Wilson, while 12th-ranked Matthews topped seventh-ranked Calan Staub 13-8. UNC Pembroke beat Emmanuel 27-17. Tiffin beat Thomas More 39-13. Thomas More heavyweight Dalton Mayer still probably has the best hair in college wrestling. Down in South Carolina, Allen beat Lincoln Memorial 28-16 and St. Andrews of the NAIA 43-6. Speaking of the NAIA, You got to call Tyrone … a winner. Tyrone Lewis picked up his first victory as the new head coach at Baker University. The Wildcats earned five bonus victories, including Kevin Lund's tech fall at 197 pounds to get past William Penn 24-22. Williams Baptist beat Lyon College 34-24 in an all-Arkansas tussle. Williams Baptist is in the NAIA, while Lyon is in its transitional process from the NAIA to NCAA Division III. On the women's side, Lincoln Memorial earned its first win in program history, defeating Allen 25-10. Ashley Morris, Calista Gibson and Jenna Blinkewicz each got falls for the victorious RAILSPLITTERS! St. Andrews' women beat Allen 18-13. Subscribe, for free, to my Daily Wrestling News. Welcome back, TBL Nation! Anji and Anna are buzzing with excitement as they dive into the incredible journey of the winningest coach in Timberwolves history—Chris Finch. We kick things off with a trip down memory lane to Finch's early days. Born on November 6, 1969, in Cambridge, Ohio, Finch's basketball prowess was evident early on. A two-time All-American at Franklin & Marshall College, he left an indelible mark on the court. Despite the NCAA Division III championship loss in 1991, Finch's impact at F&M earned him a spot in the college's Hall of Fame in 2002. Post-college, Finch took his skills to England, playing professionally for the Sheffield Forgers/Sharks from 1993 to 1997. But Finchy wasn't just a player—he transitioned into a player-coach. His coaching career took off as he led the Sheffield Sharks to multiple titles, earning him the prestigious BBL Coach of the Year award in 1999. The journey didn't stop there. Finch ventured into coaching in Germany and Belgium, leaving a mark of success wherever he went. His arrival in the NBA's G-League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers saw immediate triumph—a championship and the D-League Coach of the Year award. Fast forward to the NBA, where Finch's coaching acumen shone. From the Houston Rockets to the Denver Nuggets, New Orleans Pelicans, and eventually the Toronto Raptors, he left an impact at every stop. On February 22, 2021, Finch took the helm as the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves. In his first full season, he guided the team to a remarkable 46–36 finish and secured their first playoff berth since 2018. Finch's coaching brilliance didn't go unnoticed. He received well-deserved recognition in the 2021–22 NBA Coach of the Year voting. And on April 11, 2022, he inked a multi-year extension with the Timberwolves, solidifying his place in the team's storied history. Join Anji and Anna as they celebrate Chris Finch's journey, from player to the pinnacle of coaching success. It's a tale of passion, perseverance, and a deep love for the game.
