Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

273 The Hero's Journey   Heroes and dragons can take many different shapes, and it is vital to remember that we are the heroes of our own stories and that it is our duty to fight the dragons in whatever form they take. Only through these trials can we learn and grow into who we want to be.  In this episode Sarah Elkins and Nettie Owens discuss the importance of our personal journeys and mastering ourselves so that we can become better leaders for the people around us.    Highlights Be proud of your growth and the growth you inspire others to accomplish. It's your job to be a better person for the people you lead. Be aware of your emotions and self reflect to see where you are getting in your own way. Everything starts with you and if you aren't taking care of yourself, you cannot be the best version of yourself.   Quotes “I really like this idea of self mastery over self care. I think self care has a different tone and feel to it even though we might be describing some of the same things. When I see self care, it's been used in such a way these days it elicits massages and bath tubs, and that's great but what we're talking about is sort of this full scope of your wellness, your well being, your relationships, and your professional development. The full package and how can you be that best version of yourself and bring that to the role in your company.” “They don't always realize what that means and what weight it carries, that they are the hero of the story and that they are required to go through the trials and tribulations that are part of the hero's journey, and to face the dragons both physical and emotional, and that their job is to take this learning and bring it back to the village -back to the employees- and guide them.”  “No matter what, we're all a leader somewhere.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, When you think about your hero's journey and the role you play in other people's hero's journeys, how do you want to be remembered? What are the things you want people to know about you at the end of the day and how are your actions and your behaviors aligning with what you want people to know about you? And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Nettie Nettie Owens, CPO-CD® is an internationally recognized and award-winning expert, author and sought-after speaker on accountability and productivity. About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Job Interview Storytelling Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

I ask Nettie Owens of Sappari Solutions one of my burning questions in today's episode, "Is it possible to do all of the work and still fail?" When businesses fail, we often chalk it up to them not trying hard enough. They didn't work hard enough, so their business didn't survive. But is that always true? Victoria: Hey everyone, it’s Sensei Victoria Whitfield here, your journey partner in business, welcoming you back to episode 120 of the Journeypreneur Podcast. This is your source for channeled holistic stress management techniques, guidance, inspiration and motivation to stay on your path to rapid financial ascension and massive impact as a conscious entrepreneur. The title of today’s podcast episode is Creating Momentum. So, I'm really excited! Oh my gosh, I get to share with you an incredible goddess in my life, Nettie Owens, she's an accountability and productivity consultant. You can go and check out her website momentumaccountability.com, and I've known her for years, it's been amazing to see her different incarnations and getting better and better, over time. Welcome to the podcast Nettie! Nettie: Thank you so much for having me here today Victoria, you're right it's been years, and a transformation for me, for you, it's just been a wonderful ride! Victoria: I love it. So this, um, like when we first met, and everyone if you're listening or watching in, we met through Fabienne Fredrickson of Boldheart, so thanks to her! And my goodness. Like at the time, I remember you were an organizer, and at that time I was just, you know, some energy person. Right? And it blossomed over time, right, to your current incarnation. You and I both, like, we've been through a few incarnations over the years that we've known each other, and this may be the very first time that someone's getting to meet you. So I'm curious. Could you introduce yourself but especially tell us what are the three things that you're known for now? Nettie: Absolutely. So I am just thrilled to be here, and you're right, if I had been on this show when we first met, I would have said I'm a professional organizer, and I love that identity - it was so impactful and it's still impactful to the work that I do today. But right now what I'm known for and what people come to me for is, one, to help clarify their vision and their mission in their work so that, number two, they can get their most important work done. And I'm using the word "done" very specifically, because so often we have lots of things we're doing but not lots of things were finishing. And so really, you know, wanting to move those projects along all while helping you stay focused and removing any roadblocks that might get in your way is what I specialize in.   Let's talk about it! - Are you blocking your next business breakthrough? Today’s guest Nettie Owens from Momentum Accountability talks about her Brave Girl journey into entrepreneurship as a professional organizer after a career in computer science and a move across the country with her husband. She talks about what contributes to people being chronically disorganized and how she works with these types of clients. Nettie developed her own methodology for organizing that she trained her team of coaches in and created a value differentiator. I love that Nettie shares her knowledge about this topic and how it impacts your daily living. Her first book, The Take Control System, explains her approach to organizing and will be back on the market soon. Nettie shares several resources such as the Institute for Challenging Disorganization and NAPO. net for anyone looking to hire a professional organizer. We talk about the craze inspired by Marie Kondo and her methodology in tidying up as well as Julie Morgenstein’s books and concepts around letting go and shedding. Nettie has taken her organizing skills and business and pivoted her focus towards working with entrepreneurs on setting goals, creating new habits and implementing actions in their businesses. Her second book, Creating Momentum, guides readers through the principles of business success and came to her as a divine download that she took action. We also talk about why you need to always be investing in yourself and working with a coach to continually transform yourself. She shares how her decision was able to be a catalyst in her journey and the benefits she reaped. Nettie shares with me her mantra of “calm, present and worthy” and how it helped her through tough times and enabled her to shift her mindset. Nettie is a true gem and wealth of knowledge. I am so glad she reached out to pitch herself to me as a guest on the show. I know that you will garner a nugget or two from our juicy conversation.
