The white-hot controversy over criminal justice and bail reform has ramped up yet another notch. This time, however, a progressive district attorney and a professor of math are at the forefront of recent evidence that strongly suggests that defendants released on zero-bail are more likely to re-offend. 70% of defendants released for free reoffended and were twice as likely to commit a new crime, compared to those who had to post bail. In addition, suspects were three times as likely to be rearrested for committing a violent crime under zero-bail versus being required to post bond. While reform advocates dismiss the idea of bail reform as being behind a rise in crime, others, including a growing chorus of prosecutors and law enforcement, say that it is absolutely responsible for the increase in both crime and recidivism -- including murder at the hands of individuals who have been released. The South Bay Galleria has been dying a slow death for a while now. The community has been hoping and waiting for the South Bay Social District to take shape and bring liveliness and joy back to the once well-patronized mall. Even as excitement builds, there are a mounting number of obstacles that may keep the project from happening. Join us as we talk to former City Councilman Christian A. Horvath. We will discuss how we got here, what's the truth behind the possibility of a mall renovation, and separate truth from fiction and spin. Paul Moses & Mariam Butler are our co-hosts and always bring great updates and commentary. Together, we bring perspective, history, and a diversity of thought to educate, inform, and sometimes entertain residents for community engagement and civic involvement. We always discuss: ~ Local issues ~ Hot topics ~ Voter Info and what to know ~ Community organizations and events ~ Los Angeles County Updates and Information If you have something to share or have a question that you need answered by an official in the South Bay, email it to us at info@sandandshores.com. We are joined by the only woman currently serving on the Redondo Beach City Council, Mrs. Paige Kaluderovic. She is a mom, a leader, and a businesswoman serving the city she lives in while creating space to empower young people and collaborate with our community partners. Paul Moses & Mariam Butler are serving as the permanent cohosts of the South Bay Edition. As the Founder and CEO of the Special Needs Network, Areva Martin was recently joined by Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell and St. John's Community Health for a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting of the Jacqueline Avant Children & Family Center. What was the inspiration and the journey like to make it all happen? Hundreds of Black and Mexican families were forcibly and illegally evicted by the City of Palm Springs, CA from their privately owned houses in the Section 14 neighborhood in the 1950s and 1960s. They were literally burned out of the area. Areva is working to remedy this for the families. We will get into this and so much more. Join us for this conversation. It promises to be incredible. There are two reasons we don't trust people: We don't know them. We know them. Just ask Jeffrey Meshel. At the age of four, he was kidnapped. The next year, his parents divorced and he was raised by his alcoholic mom. As an adult, his marriage fell apart and his kids were turned against him by his ex-wife. Later, he was badly burned by a business partner that he labels a psychopath. He certainly has reasons not to trust others, especially when those closest to him violated his trust. But there is hope. Meshel took to heart the role trust plays in every aspect of our lives and penned a new book, Trust Is A Double-Edged Sword: Trust Me. “This book can empower the reader to ensure that he or she doesn't fall prey to untrustworthy people, companies, or institutions,” says Meshel. Join us as we have this incredible conversation. Find out more about Jeff Meshel at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffrey-meshel-59843a18/ Get the story behind the story. Officer Lofstrom from Redondo Beach Police Department joins the show to talk about the recent guns found on campus at Redondo Union High School. What information can the police department share with the public? What is their relationship with the school district and how does it benefit the community? Kyle breaks it down for us. We also chatted about the drug epidemic in the community. Mariam Butler, resident and community volunteer, gives an update on things to be aware of at City Council. If you want to advocate for the students at RUHS, tap in for the info. And it was no surprise that Councilman Zein Obagi's guilty verdict and suspension from practicing law did not come up at the meeting. The California State Bar found Redondo Beach City Councilman Zein Obagi, Jr., culpable of two acts of “moral turpitude” for failing to pay $515,000 to a former client after the settlement of a lawsuit. Judge Manjari Chawla recommended that Obagi's law license be suspended for two years, and that he completes State Bar ethics education and complies with probation. Why, you might ask did this not even come up at a city council meeting... It would be a good question to get answered.
