Rap and hip-hop are the most popular musical genres in the United States. At the end of 2017, Nielsen Music, which tracks music listenership, noted that the combined genre of R&B and hip-hop had surpassed rock to become the most-consumed style of music in the country. Hip-hop continues to grow and evolve, and Adam Bradley has been tracking its changes. He teaches English at UCLA and founded the Laboratory for Race and Popular Culture, known as RAP Lab. In his books, which include “Book of Rhymes: The Poetics of Hip Hop” and “The Anthology of Rap,” he makes the case for rap's literary merit. On Monday, Nov. 15, he'll take part in the UCLA Arts public discussion series "10 Questions" to consider the prompt, “How do we build?” On this episode of "Works In Progress," Bradley talks about hip-hop's cultural significance, the value of working in collectives, and the need to make failure more acceptable.

You can't control if someone doesn't get "the culture." Since hip-hop is art, every listener won't have the same interpretation or takeaways from Kendrick Lamar or J. Cole. But these artists are talking about the hardships they went through, so you better listen up. Thanks to streaming, Nielsen Music declared hip-hop the No. 1 genre in America as of 2017, but its accessibility comes from artists talking about their rundown neighborhoods and real issues people from around the country, and the world, can relate to. I spoke to Ethiopia Habtemariam, president of Motown Records, who has signed some of the biggest names in the genre like Migos and Lil Yachty. We talked about hip-hop's storytelling power that anyone can use. "I believe in having a diverse group of people working on a project, because the reality is you want to start somewhere, but you want to grow it out and you want people along the ride with you that understand what the purpose is," she said. Haley Jones, Director of Radio at Nielsen Music, talks about the data and services that Nielsen Music has to offer not only radio broadcasters, but record labels, artist managers, and booking agents. She discusses the company's Music 360 study, the divergence between radio playlists and music streaming data, and how radio broadcasters can keep up with all of the latest research that Nielsen Music has to offer.
Alan Doyle joins us this week to talk about his brand new album, A Week at the Warehouse. As the name implies, Doyle and his band cut this album live-off-the-floor at the iconic Vancouver studio with mega-producer Bob Rock. We talk about why this was the best approach for these songs, his preference for co-writing, and a lot more. Then, with Paul Shaver, head of Nielsen Music Canada, we dig into the numbers in Nielsen's 'Live Music & Brands' report. Paul pulls out some of the more interesting and surprising findings from the report and also looks at what various stakeholders in the music industry, from indie musicians to major labels, can learn and use to better monetize their live music events. Finally, we catch up with Ty Baynton to talk about his latest single, "I'll Never Know," and the inspiration and writing process for others that will be on his next EP. As well, we learn a bit about Ty's musical upbringing in Waterdown, ON and what he has learned about performing from the likes of Blake Shelton, Gord Bamford, and Tim Hicks.
