Send us a textWe spent release day with Jess Moskaluke as she celebrated her first single in over a year. Jess recently released her single “Life For Me”; a creative departure that remains true to her evolved sound. She mentioned how “Life For Me” is if her 2020 single “Map Dot” had a cool older sister. We also talked about how “Map Dot” connected with so many people across Canada - whether they were from small map dot towns, or had some small town that was special for them.We talked about Jess' “eras”, and what that means for her. She's been releasing music for a long time, and for her, it's about her own evolution, the things she's experienced, and being true to herself - no matter the era.For her - that's pretty important too. She's received criticism over the years for not being country enough and being too Nashville. We also touched on her venture into the business side and management. After over a decade in the business, she's got a lot of experience under her belt and has decided to share that with some emerging artists she's working with. You can follow Jess Moskaluke on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and X.We're so excited to bring back Season 4 of On The Porch with Front Porch Music. Celebrating ten years of 'Cheap Wine and Cigarettes'
In this episode I'm joined by my amazing friends Mike Nash & Mat Cardinal of The Prairie States. The Prairie States was born out of a desire to put a fresh touch on a classic design. As eleven time Country Music Alberta Award recipients including the 2018 Rising Star, 2020 Songwriters of the Year, and 2023 Group/Duo Of The Year as well as recent nomination for 2022 CCMA Songwriters of The Year, it's proof that this Edmonton based band is moving in the right direction. I met them both (along with fellow band mate Jeff Dick) while we were on tour with Jess Moskaluke for her Winter Wonderland Tour, and nothing fast tracks 'getting to know' someone more than living on a tour bus together! It was a real pleasure seeing them play every night on the tour, and also to get to work with their voices a little too! I had to invite them on for a chat about their new album, 'Trouble Is' and learn more about their processes as a band, such as songwriting, doing live shows and managing band dynamics in a successful and productive way. They are nominated for Group of The Year at the Country Music Alberta Awards, this March and have lots of exciting performances coming up this year too! Be sure to follow them on social and also check them out on spotify too. Subscribe to the Rock Your Voice Podcast on my Patreon page to access bonus content and Ad Free episodes.
This week we are joined by Jess Moskaluke and Queeva who come on the show and discuss their journey into music, their musical inspirations, the meaning behind their tracks, highlights of their career and what the have in store for the rest of 2024.
In this episode, you'll warm up your voice specifically to train towards hitting the big note in the Christmas classic O Holy Night. Singing Christmas songs can be notoriously challenging! They are often written with lots of key changes and fast paced melodies and lyrics, so be patient when working on these types of pieces! in this episode, I'll walk you through a gentle and effective vocal warm up and strength training session, so that you can reach the note with ease and begin to add more power, and vocal tones that get you the exact sound you want. If you are a beginner singer and this note is too high for you right now, you can work on building your range and strength gently using the exercises to work up to the Eb in this version of the song. You can apply these techniques to use on this song in any key, as well as transfer the skills to other songs and vocal styles where you are challenged by singing high notes with confidence, consistency and ease. Never push or strain your voice to hit a note, you will not build strength that way and you can damage your voice by doing so. Always warm up your voice when working towards hitting more challenging notes or working on hard songs to sing. Thank you to Jess Moskaluke for the beautifully executed demonstration while singing live on the Winter Wonderland tour! If you are a beginner singer wanting to kick start your vocal journey, check out the new course beginning Jan 2024. There is also a free training video on my Patreon Page where you can also join the Weekly Vocal Workout. As well as watch and follow along with one of my voice training sessions with Jess. Happy Holidays!

Ontario's Dustin Bird has partnered with award-winning Canadian film The Long Rider for the just released official music video of his single "Cowboy Stay". On working with Dustin on this music video, The Long Rider director Sean Cisterna says: "Dustin Bird's Cowboy Stay is the perfect musical companion to The Long Rider. Not only does his music fit the style and tone of our documentary, but the themes in his song are emotionally resonant to what Filipe experienced on his epic journey across the Americas.” Continuing to push boundaries within the country genre, the video follows Dustin's powerful anthem for equality, “Hating On Love.” The track completes the trilogy story that Dustin has been unveiling with his recent releases. In his 2021 single "Get Go" (2022 Indie Award nominated) where Dustin proclaims his love for a partner he has yet to meet. In "Cowboy Stay" the lovers have united with a bond so strong that even a wild cowboy will hang up his hat and settle down. Finally, in “Hating On Love” that love, no matter who its with, it celebrating in full force. Dustin Bird's latest collection of new music follows his debut album Unscripted, which landed in the iTunes Top 10 upon its 2021 release. Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) - Episode 472 - THE WOOD DRAKE SESSIONS with Paul Ranheim and Kirk Sauers Wood Drake Sessions' co-creators Paul Ranheim (top) and Kirk Sauers. About The Wood Drake Sessions Birthed in 2020 when longtime friends Paul Ranheim and Kirk Sauers began songwriting via Zoom, The Wood Drake Sessions is a creative collective seeking to provide inspired and timely worship songs for the Church. The Wood Drake Sessions also offers a variety of resources, including charts, lead sheets and tutorials to help worshiping communities sing together. Ranheim is a multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, worship leader, pastor and church planter currently on staff at Redeemer Longmont in Colorado. A Pacific Northwest native, he has served with Young Life as well as at churches in Spokane, Washington; Santa Barbara, California; St. Louis and Nashville, among others. Currently a worship leader and artist-in-residence at First Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Georgia, Sauers spent eight years in Nashville as a songwriter, touring mandolinist and background vocalist. His acclaimed solo worship EP, Always and Forever, released in 2015 and Sauers' songs have been recorded by bluegrass favorite Lonesome River Band and chart-topping Canadian country artist Jess Moskaluke, among others. THE WOOD DRAKE SESSIONS FULL-LENGTH DEBUT WITH SANDRA MCCRACKEN AND LESLIE JORDAN AMONG STANDOUT COLLABORATORS From the Valley to the Golden Shore Released April 29, 2022 NASHVILLE, Tenn.—From the Valley to the Golden Shore, the full-length debut from worship newcomers The Wood Drake Sessions, is set to bow April 29. Showcasing collaborations with such luminaries as bestselling singer/songwriter and worship leader Sandra McCracken; singer/songwriter Leslie Jordan (All Sons & Daughters); modern hymnist Wendell Kimbrough; and NPR-lauded singer/songwriter Liz Vice, among others, the album was written by The Wood Drake Sessions' co-creators Paul Ranheim and Kirk Sauers. Produced by Lucas Morton, From the Valley to the Golden Shore features nine roots-based, organic pop tracks conveying the surety of Christ's sovereignty despite the turmoil of the times. Offering a preview of the album's overarching message, the April 15 Easter-themed single “All Will Be Well” is a Sauers-led track joyfully proclaiming Jesus' victory over death, “I'm alive/I have won/See the grave I've overcome.” Additional highlights include album opener “Oh How Good To Be Together,” an engaging corporate worship anthem led by McCracken; “I See A King,” with Vice's signature vocals atop an R&B-infused groove celebrating the Savior who will right all wrongs; the Kimbrough-featured “Grace Will Prevail,” articulating God's unfailing promises; and Jordan's poignant closer, “Bountifully With Me,” a gentle song of praise for Christ's provision. “Our great desire is to see the Church flourish today, and we believe new songs that capture God's faithfulness and great deeds in the midst of our cultural moment are important for her flourishing,” Sauers shares. “We hope our music can inspire and stir the affections of our hearts to continue to love, trust and enjoy God. We also envision these songs helping shape the faith of God's people as they sing them together in worshiping communities, serving not just to help us know Truth and inform our heads, but to feel Truth and shepherd our hearts.” “All too often we feel like we're drowning in the noise of this world,” Ranheim adds. “We need to be reminded that we have a King who is coming, and believers of all cultures, races, and times—along with all creation itself—will rejoice at the restoration and shalom that Jesus will bring. We need songs that shape us to hope deeply in Him.” “We wanted the album to be brought to life by a variety of people, to have greater representation than just our own voices,” Ranheim continues. “I still remember the moment I heard Sandra in my head singing ‘Oh How Good To Be Together,' and I knew she could make that song come to life unlike anyone else. Pretty soon we found ourselves reaching out to a handful of artists who all generously agreed to join in our mission.” “The Wood Drake Sessions name was inspired by a Wendell Berry poem, ‘The Peace of Wild Things,'” explains Sauers of both the duo's moniker and mission. “When despair grows within, the poet writes of lying down ‘where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water.' The imagery of a still and worriless creation extending its welcome of peace profoundly touched the ache of our hearts. Paul and I knew this was how we wanted our songs to exist—as works of art inviting us into the stillness of God's presence, the grace of His goodness, and the rest of perfect peace.” For further information: visit thewooddrakesessions.com or turningpointpr.com. MAK LONDON held her dream close for decades, but due to the hardships of growing up as an immigrant in Canada, Mak's dream of becoming a recording artist was long stifled. But if there is one message that MAK shares with her fans, is that through fortitude and perseverance comes success. Today, MAK find herself sharing the stage with the likes of Brett Kissel, Paul Brandt, Jess Moskaluke and others. When the entire world paused during the pandemic, MAK went straight to work. Writing over 35 songs in 3 months - she is now ready to release a 10 song potent debut album, covering various subject matter, but the main message is empowerment. Her music is built upon a foundation of honesty and authenticity. Hip-hop tinged, mainstream pop catchiness, wraps around lyrics forged through experiences both painful and triumphant. Her vocals are rich and reveal both strength and vulnerability... and it's resonating. In just 6 short weeks of releasing her debut single Empress and sophomore single Cut Ya Clean, MAK has captured the attention of fans internationally, as well as major labels and heavy hitters in the music industry. Brazil is a current particular hotspot where her debut single Empress is on mainstream radio, and both singles (including the sophomore Cut Ya Clean) are on rotation on MTV Brazil. However, fans and industry in Europe, the US, and of course her home country Canada are also taking notice. MAK is finding herself participating in a flurry of interviews, blogs, podcasts on three continents. “MAK is the kind of artist that doesn't come along too often and if you haven't got her on your radar, you better start learning her name.” Kym Cyr – Editor in Chief, Now And Then Magazine. The debut album, scheduled for release in late fall 2021, was recorded in Calgary and Vancouver, and led by MAK and an exceptional team of music industry powerhouses with multiple awards and industry nominations between them.

THIS WEEKS LOCAL SPOTLIGHT...Shines on Stratford, Ontario's own...Justine Chantale!Jackie chats with Justine about her brand new, recently released, radio single and ep!!"One of the most promising artists in Canada's up-and-coming music scene, Justine Chantale has been described as the small-town girl with the big voice, and even bigger heart. After all, for this Stratford chanteuse, music has been a driving force for as long as she can remember.""I started singing when I was eight, in the school choir — but I never really got into playing guitar or taking voice lessons until later on," she explained. "It wasn't until I stumbled upon an open mic that I really realized what I could do."And while the would-be singer/songwriter had been unsure about which direction her career might take, mom and dad had already set her on an epic path of inspiration, one paved with a mutual love of country music and classic rock."I grew up listening to a lot of country, my mom was into musicians like Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, while my dad was all about CCR and Blue Rodeo." she said with a smile. "That appreciation really created a lot of diversity in the kind of music that would influence me down the line. I'm pretty lucky that way."Now, showcasing a blend of country and pop, Justine has continued to make a name for herself across the region, not only hitting the stage during Country Music Week at the 2016 Canadian Country Music Association Awards in London, Ont., opening for landmark artists including Jess Moskaluke, Chad Brownlee and Bobby Wills, but a number of venues including London Music Hall and Trackside Music Festival, as well as recently opening for The Proud Sons at London's downtown staple, Rum Runners.Justine will also be hitting the studio next spring, continuing to work on her second EP, a follow-up to 2015's Stepping Stones."For me, writing and playing has always been a form of self-expression, but also a way to get my point across to people and to connect," she said. "Sometimes words don't always do the job — but music does. Getting up and performing is so therapeutic ... and if it can really touch people, that's why I do it."
This week, Shilo chats with Jess Moskaluke. They chat about the concept behind her new album ”demos”, non music related projects she has been up to, why her new single “Mapdot” is so special for her, and how her and her husband have started doing puzzles because they have so much time at home together. Oh, and also wine. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dan Mangan came out of nowhere this summer with a surprise EP called Unmake, featuring some stripped-back and solitary songs in contrast of his full-band material on Dan Mangan + Blacksmith's 2015 release, Club Meds. We'll check to see if that's an indication of what's to come, teaming up with Tegan Quin of Tegan and Sara on "Forgetery (Redux)," and more. What's the most popular medium for music discovery in 2016? Just how popular are the big music streaming services in Canada? These and many more stats and trends were shared in Nielsen Music's 360 Canada Report, and this week, Nielsen Canada's Paul Shaver joins us to sort through the data and pinpoint some of the things that will have an impact on independent Canadian artists going forward. Plus, Jess Moskaluke was the CCMA Female Artist of the Year in both 2014 and 2015. She's currently pushing "Elevator," the third single from her 2015 EP Kiss Me Quiet, to radio and speaks with Andrew about what's kept her based in Saskatchewan despite all of her success, why she refuses to write music at home, and more.
MIKE DENNEY is President of MDM Recordings Inc., an independent recording company founded in 2008 and located in Toronto. One of his biggest dreams for his artists is to help enhance their success by securing them international recognition, and he has made this goal a priority. “My mission is to support, help nurture and grow the careers of the numerous artists that I work with on a day in and day out basis. I want to help them achieve their goals and dreams, while achieving mine with theirs.” A 25 year veteran of the music industry, Mike believes that being passionate and success-driven about music (or anything that you do) supersedes wanting a large pay check and material advances. “I have always been very driven to succeed. Years ago it was material things, now it’s a passion for what I do.” What he looks for in new artists is simple, “I want to represent talent that can really play and perform from their core, their true soul,” he explains. “I want artists that are hard-working and driven by the music, inspired to constantly perfect their craft. To me this is the true definition of talent.” Announced in July 2015, in a country-wide reveal, 2015 marks another outstanding year for MDM Recordings and its artists, with a total of sixteen CCMA nominations, across 15 categories. Substantiating her claim to the modern day Shania Twain status, Jess Moskaluke (an MDM artist and current CCMA Female Artist of the Year) continues her success streak with 2015 CCMA Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Single of the Year nominations. Tune in to hear Mike chat with about all the latest news in the MDM world!

Sakstachewan's JESS MOSKALUKE is the 2014 CCMA Female Artist of the Year. It's been an amazing year for her with her single Cheap Wine and Cigarettes going gold. She performed the song on this year's CCMA broadcast. The album Light Up The Night also features the popular single Good Lovin' and the new single Used. Jess had a Nashville showcase in August at The Rutledge. CMT has begun playing the video for her latest single Used. Toronto-based band THE LOVELOCKS received a 2014 CMAO Rising Star Award nomination and then won the CCMA Discovery Award. Celebrated by BlogTO in July 2014 as one of the top 5 alt-country bands to watch in Toronto, The Lovelocks are comprised of musical partners in crime Ali Raney and Zoe Neuman, two city girls who love country music. Their sound has been described as "The Dixie Chicks go Lumineering with a Mumford & Sons-ian alt-country, roots-inspired approach filled with soaring vocals, sweet harmonies and sultry string." The current single from their debut EP is the catchy & happy Dance featuring their signature harmonies and melodies lead by Ali’s fiddle. Jess Moskaluke and The Lovelocks are on the roster of MDM Recordings Inc. headed by Mike Denney.
