The Dome Foamers discussed the upcoming season of the Houston Astros, focusing on potential lineup changes, player roles, and the rotation. They also shared their predictions for the season, including potential breakout players and the pitcher of the year. The conversation also highlighted the importance of players like Jeremy Peña and the need for improvement in certain areas of their performance.
With the exit of key pieces in Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker, the Astros are adapting to potential lineup changes. The infield will feature new faces with the acquisition of first baseman Christian Walker and third baseman Isaac Paredes, in addition to second baseman Jose Altuve working in left field, but Jeremy Peña is expected to remain at shortstop. Last season, Peña recorded a .266 batting average and an OPS of .701. The Astros concluded their 2024 campaign with a disappointing loss to the Detroit Tigers in the AL Wild Card Series, which ended a run of seven consecutive trips to the American League Championship Series. As the Astros enter a new era, what can Peña do to become a feared member of the lineup?

Houston Astros manager Joe Espada joins The Matt Thomas Show following an off-day that "couldn't have come at a better time," Espada said. The Astros are in Chicago on Tuesday to begin a three-game road series against the White Sox. Justin Verlander was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday due to neck discomfort. The Astros hoped Verlander would return to the mound Thursday for the final game of the series against the White Sox, but Espada is not optimistic as Verlander is progressing "slower than what we expected." The Astros will "see how [Verlander] feels today and then we'll go from there," and a stint on the injured list is "something we'll definitely consider," Espada said. As the Astros continue to struggle with injuries to the starting pitching staff, Espada says MLB should "figure out what's really causing these injuries" across the league. This is "something we should all look at as an industry." With Verlander''s recovery timeline uncertain, the Astros are hopeful Luis Garcia and and Lance McCullers Jr. will return to the mound this season. Garcia is "throwing live BPs," and McCullers "is here with us in Chicago," but "Luis is ahead of Lance right now." Jose Abreu was released from the Astros roster Friday, and Jon Singleton and Mauricio Dubón have been "getting a lot of those looks" at first base. "We are looking for production." Espada also talks about Jeremy Peña having "to grind through" the "ups and downs of the season," and Kyle Tucker recovering from a shin injury.

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña joins The Matt Thomas Show following a 10-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday at Minute Maid Park. In the bottom of the second inning, Peña connected with a slider that ended up in the Crawford Boxes, ending his homerun drought that dated back to July 5 of last season. Shortly after reporting to spring training, Peña debuted a new batting stance that led him to "start feeling confident at the plate." "Spring training was still an adjustment period," and "the main difference was just simplifying things," Peña said. Peña's homerun was upstaged by a no-hitter from Ronel Blanco in his eighth career start. "[Blanco] was electric last night." Peña also discusses Joe Espada earning his first win as a MLB manager and how the Astros look to approach the rest of the season.
