The Pirates hammered the Red Sox, 10–3, at Fenway—Pittsburgh's second straight win in Boston to clinch the series. The 10 runs tied the most the Red Sox have allowed at Fenway this season. Pittsburgh trailed, took the lead, gave it back, then rallied again, scoring in multiple innings. Team totals: 12 hits, 7 walks, 9 strikeouts; every Pirate recorded a hit, and five players had an RBI. On the mound, Johan Oviedo worked 5.0 innings (3 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 2 ER). The bullpen held it down afterward. We noted managing workloads down the stretch—as we saw Mike Burrows pitch 2 in relief today, while Braxton Ashcraft remains in the rotation and Bubba Chandler could be an option. At the plate, Oneil Cruz homered for the 19th time this seaosn.. Multi-hit nights included Andrew McCutchen (10 hits in his last 8 games) and Nick Gonzales, and Spencer Horwitz. Jared Triolo reached four times via hit, walk, HBP, and error. Series finale is tomorrow, with a chance to sweep. NS9 Postgame Show is Powered by Primanti Bros.
Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles reacts to news that top pitching prospect Bubba Chandler is set to be promoted to the MLB club this weekend for a series against the Colorado Rockies. Why was now the right time for Chandler in the eyes of GM Ben Cherington and manager Don Kelly? Are they making the right move in using him out of the bullpen to start? Or should he be in the rotation alongside names like Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller and Braxton Ashcraft? And what doe this promotion mean for 2026 rotation spot, with competition including Mike Burrows, Johan Oviedo and others? Noah tackles those questions and more.

On Konnor Griffin's Double-A debut day, Post-Gazette Pirates insider Colin Beazley gives his thoughts on the Pirates' No. 2 farm system ranking and the four top-100 prospects that earned that nod: Griffin, Bubba Chandler, Seth Hernandez and Edward Florentino. Beazley recaps a good week for the Altoona Curve, then gives updates on Hunter Barco, Rafael Flores, Bubba Chandler, Johan Oviedo, Termarr Johnson, Nick Cimillo, Callan Moss, Ivan Brethowr and Florentino.
Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles examines what the club's starting rotation will look like next season. While the organization boasts notable arm talent, many pitchers also have an unfavorable injury history. With workload restrictions expected to be a big part of the equation, Hiles looks to see who can exactly be expected to take on a true season's worth of innings in 2026. Noah gives his thoughts on options including Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Mike Burrows, Bubba Chandler, Thomas Harrington, Hunter Barco, Carmen Mlodzinski, Braxton Ashcraft, Jared Jones and Johan Oviedo.
Pirates insiders Noah Hiles and Colin Beazley discuss the state of the club's starting pitching staff and bullpen after their series loss to the San Francisco Giants at PNC Park. With the rotation showing signs of fatigue after short starts by Johan Oviedo, Mike Burrows and Andrew Heaney, plus a few key arms like Dennis Santana and Isaac Mattson taking on new roles in the bullpen, Noah and Colin debate if adding more young arms into the mix could help solve both problems. What about highly touted prospects in Triple-A like Bubba Chandler or Hunter Barco? What should the rest of the season look like for young arms like Carmen Mlodzinski, Braxton Ashcraft and Kyle Nicolas? What about veterans like Dauri Moreta and Ryan Borucki? Noah and Colin answer those questions and more.
Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson acknowledge SP Johan Oviedo's activation from the IL, and they wonder how effective he will be for the remainder of this season. This injury report is brought to you by Shenderovich, Shenderovich and Fishman.
Hour 4 with Jason Mackey: Mitch Keller has become one of the most attractive players on the trade front. Bob Walk doesn't know what to expect from Johan Oviedo when he comes back to Pittsburgh and if he will approach hitters with the same stuff. The Yankees traded for third baseman Ryan McMahon and could take a landing spot away from Ke'Bryan Hayes. Which fan host would you want, or not want to be your roommate at training camp?

Mitch Keller has become one of the most attractive players on the trade front. Bob doesn't know what to expect from Johan Oviedo when he comes back to Pittsburgh and how his stuff will play. Bob said most players when he played didn't think much of the trade deadline and there wasn't much speculation around trades. We hear from fans on what the Pirates should do on July 31.
Bubba Chandler and Johan Oviedo made solid starts in the minor leagues this week. We could soon see Chandler debut as his strikeout to walk ratio is improving. Konnor Griffin is the No. 1 overall prospect in baseball. Second round pick Angel Cervantes is electing to go to UCLA, not sign in Pittsburgh. Jason explains what it all means.
In his weekly mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles answers reader questions. Among them: When can fans expect to see top prospect Konnor Griffin crack the major league roster? Is GM Ben Cherington focused on adding hitting at the trade deadline, and what could a star pitcher like Mitch Keller net them in return? Is it safe to assume Cherington will be back next year considering he's manning this trade deadline for owner Bob Nutting? Is it a certainty Andrew Heaney gets traded considering Johan Oviedo is making his way back from injury and Bubba Chandler and Hunter Barco are waiting in Triple-A? Where is Dauri Moreta? And why has the Pirates defense been so much better since Don Kelly took over as manager from Derek Shelton? Noah answers those questions and more.
If you win, they will come back. Joe was impressed by the Skenes Day crowd on Tuesday. Joe thinks this is an event town, but Bob thinks a baseball town. Austin thinks we are overestimating, not overrating, the Pirates pitching depth. Jared Jones and Johan Oviedo are still hurt.

Dan asked Cherington about it and he stopped short of saying they have a ton of pitching depth. They already traded Luis Ortiz and Quinn Priester. Bubba Chandler has a 2.20 ERA since last summer in 90 innings with 124 strikeouts. Johan Oviedo was dealing with a lat injury and us up to 94 mph. The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates kick off a three-game series at Great American Ball Park this weekend, April 11-13, 2025, with both teams looking to climb out of the NL Central basement. Tied for last place, this matchup feels like a generational clash of two franchises struggling to recapture past glory. The Reds, favored slightly at -155 for Friday's opener, aim to capitalize on home-field advantage, while the Pirates, at +129, hope to spoil the party. Friday's game sets the tone with Reds' right-hander Brady Singer facing Pittsburgh's lefty Bailey Falter. Singer, projected to anchor Cincinnati's rotation, looks to exploit a Pirates offense averaging a meager 2.6 runs over their last five games, with a .198 batting average and just one homer in their past three. Falter, coming off a rough outing against the Yankees, allowed seven runs, but his earlier start showed promise with only two earned runs over six innings. The Reds' lineup, led by Elly De La Cruz's .250 average and 12 RBI, will test Falter's ability to rebound. TJ Friedl and Jose Trevino add depth, though Cincinnati's 26th-ranked .231 team average last season suggests inconsistency. Saturday's 6:40 p.m. ET clash and Sunday's 1:40 p.m. ET finale remain murkier, with Pittsburgh's Carmen Mlodzinski slated for Sunday but no Reds starter confirmed. Cincinnati's rotation faces challenges, with Andrew Abbott potentially returning from injury, but their pitching staff boasts a 3.15 ERA and 0.98 WHIP, a clear edge over Pittsburgh's sputtering offense. The Pirates dodge a bullet missing Paul Skenes, whose absence leaves their rotation thinner. Pittsburgh's -19 run differential, worst in the NL Central, underscores their early-season woes. Both teams have injury concerns: Cincinnati's Matt McLain, Tyler Stephenson, and others are sidelined, while Pittsburgh's Johan Oviedo remains out. Yet, this series feels like a chance for the Reds to make a statement. Their losses have been close, unlike Pittsburgh's blowouts. With Friday's game on Apple TV+ and the weekend on FanDuel Sports Ohio, fans can expect tight, low-scoring affairs—Vegas sets the over/under at 8.5 runs for Friday. De La Cruz's speed and power could tilt the scales, but Pittsburgh's Bryan Reynolds might counter if he finds his groove. Expect a gritty, pivotal series as both teams fight for early momentum.

Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Andrew Destin and Noah Hiles report from the second day of spring training in Bradenton, Fla. What's the latest on Johan Oviedo a year removed from his Tommy John surgery after holding down the 2023 rotation with Mitch Keller? Is he on the fast track for the last rotation spot over names like Bubba Chandler, Mike Burrows and Braxton Ashcraft? What should fans expect from new acquisition Darick Hall, who will get an extended look at first base in the absence of trade acquisition Spencer Horwitz? And what did Noah and Andrew glean from first-round pick Konnor Griffin's batting practice session? Our duo answers those questions and more.
On the Friday mailbag edition of his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey breaks down the reasons why the Bengals scare him ahead of Week 13 when the Steelers visit Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon. Jason also talks about the Penguins needing to build on Wednesday's performance before getting into reader questions, including who he believes is the franchise's best all-time goalkeeper. Then, he tackles a number of baseball topics, including the cap/floor in MLB's next CBA, Johan Oviedo's future role, Nick Gonzales at shortstop and the Pirates' 2025 starting rotation. Oneil Cruz is going to center field and Shelton views center as the best place for Cruz moving forward. Johan Oviedo is progressing well recovering from Tommy John Surgery and will be limited in his way back.
Hour 3 with Paul Zeise: Pirates manager Derek Shelton joined the show. Oneil Cruz is going to center field and Shelton views center as the best place for Cruz moving forward. Johan Oviedo is progressing well recovering from Tommy John Surgery and will be limited in his work to be healthy for next season. Ke'Bryan Hayes is going through additional tests today and the Pirates are pretty hopeful he can play again this season.
Hour two with Paul Zeise. Johan Oviedo is coming back, plus Braxton Ashcraft and Bubba Chandler give the Pirates options. Rowdy Tellez could get the Pirates something back on the trade front, but now would be an unpopular move to trade him. They haven't had an extended winning or losing streak in a while and Andrew doesn't see the Pirates buying unless they string together 5/6. What would you ask Pirates manager Derek Shelton? Will they buy?
Hour 1 with Dorin Dickerson: The Pirates have made a major splash in free agency. According to multiple reports, the Pirates signed left-handed reliever Aroldis Chapman to a 1-year, $10.5 million deal. Remember when Chapman hit McCutchen in the back while on the Reds in 2012? McCutchen and Chapman played together on the Yankees in 2018. It will be ok. Austin likes the signing and thinks it needs to be the tip of the iceberg. More moves need to follow this, especially in the rotation. Bechtold baseball breakdown. The Pirates bullpen is deep, but what comes next? The Bucs need to add starting pitching to have a well-rounded staff. The Johan Oviedo and Endy Rodriguez injuries hurt, but you are going into spring knowing they aren't playing. There shouldn't be any issue between Chapman and Cutch. The move makes the team better and why people should be excited. The Penguins scored a goal... on their own net. Kris Letang passed the puck back to Evgeni Malkin during a delayed penalty with Tristan Jarry to the bench for the extra attacker. Letang's puck went off Malkin's stick and into the net to make it a two-goal deficit. The own goal was terrible. We discuss the position the Pens have put themselves in. They're not going to trade Malkin or Letang. Erik Karlsson was supposed to be the new piece that fixed things. Do the Pirates have the brighter future than the Steelers and Penguins? Austin thinks the Pirates over the next few years have better results coming than the Penguins. Dorin believes it's one of the most frustrating times in Pittsburgh sports in a long time.
Well it has now become official news. Johan Oviedo will have Tommy John Surgery and be out for all of 2024. Johan had a pretty successful season he was coming off of where he showed glimpses of being a real threat on the mound through his struggles of a full season's worth of innings. This officially leaves the Pirates with only one pitcher you feel confident in their rotation and that is Mitch Keller. As it is now very clear that the Pirates will need to add multiple pitchers to next season's rotation, there has already been a handful who have signed to other teams. Names like Aaron Nola, Lance Lynn, Kyle Gibson, and Kenta Maeda have all signed this past week. What do these signings mean for the Pirates in their desire to compete?
