Originally recorded 09/25/24 What a night. We recorded while the Chicago White Sox tried to avoid baseball infamy. Stephe, an avowed ChiSox hater, rooted loudly for their demise, especially since it would benefit his beloved Royals' chances at making the playoffs. Bruce served as the ESPN ticker throughout the episode. Then we discussed the recent SDCC returning registration. Yes, we got tickets for 2025. We created Moneyball Demo Night, an opportunity for A's fans to pay their parting respects to the team leaving them behind for Sin City. We talked about what it would look like when its time for our kids to put Gen X into the home. Bruce predicts much gaming will take place. Stephe proposed that Gen X is the reason all toys have soft edges now. We shared a few stories of growing up in what Bruce called the "Evel Knievel generation." What else? How about: The Story of George the Knot Marvel's Micronauts collections Marvel's giant omnibi in general Stephe's ongoing search for Darkseid Action figure talk Figures we wished we'd kept Slow Horses Kaos Baseball: The Movie - the book And, of course, we played "What's on Your Desk?"

Last week we did the 3x champion Cubs and this week the 3x champion White Sox. The Pale Hose have the 2005 improbably championship to live off of since the other two were before 1918! Lots of great ChiSox to talk about given the long 50 year drought between WS appearances - 1919 to 1959! 4c leads off with the 49ers announcement that Trey Lance will not backup Brock Purdy, and what it says about Lance's and Sam Darnold's future in SF. Why the Jets were always destined for failure, and why 4c is officially out on Tua in Miami. Additionally, he touches on the White Sox potential relocation, how to fix the Yankees, and why the Jonathan Taylor holdout/trade demands are all for naught.
Luis Robert Jr. was kinda quiet at Coors Field this weekend with the Chicago White Sox. He added his 33rd home run of the season, but it wasn't enough against the Colorado Rockies. NHL – Connor Bedard, as expected, taken first in the NHL draft by the Chicago Blackhawks The Chicago Blackhawks have selected Connor Bedard with the first pick in the NHL draft. The move should kick-start a hopeful new era for Chicago. Bedard is a highly skilled offensive forward who’s drawn comparisons to Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby. Bedard is the second No. 1 pick in Blackhawks history. Chicago took Patrick Kane first in 2007 and he helped form the core of a team that won three Stanley Cup championships. Anaheim selected Sweden forward Leo Carlsson second, followed Columbus picking Michigan freshman Adam Fantilli. The Blackhawks took center Oliver Moore with the 19th pick in a previous trade with Tampa Bay. The Red Wings also had two first round selections. With the 9th pick, Detroit took, center Nate Danielson and with pick 17, Detroit grabbed Swedish defenseman, Axel Sandin Pellikka. The draft continues today with rounds 2 through 7 starting at 11 a.m. NHL – Gary Bettman urges fans to boo him, honors David Poile to kick off NHL draft NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman brought one of the league's most beloved general managers with him to the stage to kick off the draft. That may have helped keep the usual booing of Bettman to a minimum. David Poile is the longest-tenured and winningest general manager in league history. Poile is retiring Friday after overseeing the startup of the Nashville Predators as an expansion franchise in 1997. Bettman then told fans they weren't booing him up to their usual standards. He urged them to do better and made sure to appreciate them as the boos grew louder. WNBA – Women's National Basketball Association Yesterday Chicago Sky 80, Los Angeles Sparks 63 Sky 80, Sparks 63 – Courtney Williams scores a season-high 21, Chicago snaps a 6-game losing streak Courtney Williams scored a season-high 21 points, Kahleah Copper added 14 points and the Chicago Sky beat the Los Angeles Sparks 80-63 to snap a six-game losing streak. Tonight Indiana Fever at Phoenix Mercury, 10:00 p.m. NBA – Nikola Vucevic agrees to a 3-year, $60 million extension with the Bulls The Chicago Bulls and center Nikola Vucevic have agreed to a $60 million, three-year extension, keeping the two-time All-Star off the free agent market. The move was hardly a surprise. Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and Vucevic had expressed a desire to get a deal done. Vucevic averaged 17.6 points and 11 rebounds while playing in all 82 games for the first time in his career. The 6-foot-10 center turns 33 in October. NFL – NFL finalizing discipline for several players linked to gambling violations Two people familiar with the plan say the NFL is finalizing disciplinary action against more players for gambling violations, including Indianapolis Colts defensive back Isaiah Rodgers Sr. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because an official announcement won't be made until later this week. Rodgers is the only identified player of the group, identifying himself in a Twitter post as the Colts player accused of gambling earlier this month. The identities of the other players are not yet known. A year-long suspension would be consistent with similar punishments handed down by the NFL. Golf – Thomas enters Rocket Mortgage Classic, hoping to boost postseason positioning Justin Thomas may have skipped the Rocket Mortgage Classic if this was just another usual year in his career. It hasn't been. The 2022 PGA Championship winner with 15 PGA Tour titles has fallen out of the top 10 in the world ranking for the first time in almost six years. Phillies 7-0, White Sox 4-3 – Giolito starts combined 1-hitter as ChiSox, Phils split DH Lucas Giolito and four relievers combined on a one-hitter, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 to split a doubleheader. Brandon Marsh had Philadelphia’s only hit, an opposite-field double to left on reliever Aaron Bummer’s first pitch of the eighth inning. Giolito was pulled after throwing 102 pitches in six innings. He struck out seven, walked one and hit a batter. Reynaldo Lopez set down the last four batters, striking out three, to earn his third save. Jake Burger hit a three-run homer in the first inning off Bailey Falter. In the first game, Philadelphia’s Josh Harrison homered among his three hits and drove in four runs as the Phillies won 7-4. Cubs 4, A’s 0 – Cubs score 4 in 8th, send Athletics to 6th straight loss Cody Bellinger hit an RBI single to break a scoreless tie and ignite a four-run outburst in the eighth inning, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 4-0 win over the Oakland Athletics. Marcus Stroman continued his strong start to the season, pitching six scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Mark Leiter Jr. (1-0) worked a scoreless seventh for his first win of the season. Oakland starter Ken Waldichuk pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts, but reliever Trevor May (2-3) was charged with three run and the loss after only managing to record one out. Hamlin says his “heart is still in the game," and adds that what happened on the field in Cincinnati isn’t the end of his story. He spoke after participating in the team’s voluntary workout program on Tuesday. Bills general manager Brandon Beane says Hamlin was cleared to play after meeting with a third and final specialist on Friday. The second-year player from the Pittsburgh area collapsed on the field after making what appeared to be a routine tackle in a Jan. 2 game against the Bengals. The NBA made the announcement two days before the series shifts to the defending champions’ home court at Chase Center. The NBA made the announcement of a decision by executive vice president and head of basketball operations Joe Dumars. NBA – Warriors in rare territory, trail Kings 2-0 in NBA playoffs The Golden State Warriors had gone 27 consecutive playoff series during the Stephen Curry era without falling behind 2-0. Steve Kerr hadn’t seen it, either, since he began coaching the team in 2014-15. Now, the defending NBA champions will need a mighty comeback and now without emotional leader Draymond Green. Green stomped on Domantas Sabonis during the fourth quarter of Monday night’s 114-106 defeat at Golden 1 Center and was penalized by the NBA with one-game suspension without pay. Game 3 against the Sacramento Kings is on Thursday in San Francisco. NCAAMBB – Edey declares for NBA draft with option to return to school National player of the year Zach Edey of Purdue has declared for the NBA, but will keep open the option of returning to school next season. The 7-foot-4 center led Purdue to a Big Ten regular-season title this past season by averaging 22.3 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 1.5 assists per game. He was a unanimous first team All-American and swept all of the national player of the year awards. It’s the second straight year a Purdue player has declared early for the draft. Jaden Ivey was a lottery pick in 2022 and was selected by the Detroit Pistons. It’s unclear where Edey will be projected to go in June’s draft. Boxing – Claressa Shields sees name and image at Little Caesars Arena Two-time Olympic gold medalist and women’s world middleweight champion Claressa Shields was on the verge of tears when saw her name and image on the videoboards at Little Caesars Arena, where she will fight Hanna Gabriels of Costa Rica. The home of the Detroit Pistons and Red Wings will have boxing for the first time since it opened in 2017 on June 3. Shields is the main attraction on a card that includes up-and-coming fighters from Michigan. Since Thomas Hearns retired in 2006, no one in boxing has been a big enough name to draw large crowds in Detroit. FIFA – US to play CONCACAF Gold Cup in Chicago, St Louis, Charlotte The defending champion United States will play its CONCACAF Gold Cup opener against Jamaica at Chicago on June 24. The Americans will meet Curaçao, St. Kitts and Nevis, Guyana or Sint Maarten four days later at St. Louis, then finish Group A against Nicaragua on July 2 at Charlotte, North Carolina. NFL – National Football League – Week 3 Yesterday Minnesota Vikings 28, Detroit Lions 24 Chicago Bears 23, Houston Texas 20 Indianapolis Colts 20, Kansas City Chiefs 17 Vikings 28, Lions 24 – Vikings rally past Lions 28-24 on Osborn’s last-minute TD Kirk Cousins connected with a wide-open K.J. Osborn for the go-ahead, 28-yard touchdown with 45 seconds remaining, and the Minnesota Vikings rallied to beat the Detroit Lions 28-24. Osborn blew by former Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes on a corner route to snag the in-stride pass and cruise across the goal line to give Minnesota the lead for the first time. The Vikings then didn’t let Jared Goff and the Lions cross midfield. Dalvin Cook rushed for 96 yards and a score before leaving with a shoulder injury for the Vikings, who fell behind 14-0 and 24-14. Bears 23, Texans 20 – Smith INT sets up game-ending FG as Bears beat Texans 23-20 Roquan Smith set up Cairo Santos’ game-ending field goal when he intercepted Davis Mills deep in Houston territory, and the Chicago Bears beat former coach Lovie Smith and the Texans 23-20. Khalil Herbert ran for a career-high 157 yards and two touchdowns. The Texans had third-and-1 at their 26 when defensive tackle Angelo Blackson tipped a pass intended for Rex Burkhead. Smith, who missed practice all week because of a hip injury, intercepted it at the 30 and returned it to the 12. Chicago had Herbert run, then downed the ball twice before Santos nailed a 30-yarder as time expired. Colts 20, Chiefs 17 – Ryan drives Colts to 1st win with 20-17 comeback vs Chiefs Matt Ryan threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to rookie Jelani Woods with 24 seconds left to give the Indianapolis Colts a 20-17 comeback victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Ryan earned his first win with the Colts in their home opener by throwing for two scores, both to Woods. Indy sealed it with a late interception — Patrick Mahomes’ first of the season as the Chiefs fell to 2-1. Mahomes lost for only the third time in September despite leading almost the entire second half. Ryan won it with a brilliant 16-play, 76-yard drive that was aided by a personal foul call on Chris Jones following a third-down sack. Jonathan Schoop hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth and Chicago’s sixth straight loss clinched the division for Cleveland. The Guardians held a big lead in the ninth inning of their game at Texas when the clinching became official. The White Sox, who won the AL Central last season in their first year under manager Tony La Russa, slipped to 76-77. La Russa hasn’t run the team since last August because of a medical issue, and Miguel Cairo has been the acting manager. Cubs 8, Pirates 3 – Wisdom hits 25th homer, Cubs pull away from Pirates 8-3 Patrick Wisdom hit a three-run homer and Adrian Sampson tossed six efficient innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-3. Wisdom took the first pitch he saw from Pittsburgh reliever Manny Bañuelos and sent it into the Pirates bullpen well behind the center-field wall with two outs in the fifth for his 25th home run of the season. Wisdom is the fourth third baseman in Cubs history to reach the 25 home run-plateau at least twice. Sampson allowed one run to improve to 2-1 with a 1.55 ERA this month. Bryan Reynolds homered for Pittsburgh, which has lost 9 of 10. Tonight Tigers, Cubs, and White Sox are all off NCAAFB – College Football – Week 4 Saturday (4) Michigan 34, Maryland 27 (14) Penn State 33, Central Michigan 14 Buffalo 50, Eastern Michigan 31 Notre Dame 45, North Carolina 32 Minnesota 34, Michigan State 7 San Jose State 34, Western Michigan 6 NCAAFB – Vols, Wolfpack join top 10; Florida State returns Tennessee and North Carolina State have broken into the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll. Florida State is back in the rankings for the first time in four years. Georgia remained No. 1 and received 55 of 63 first-place votes in the Top 25. No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Michigan and No. 5 Clemson all held their places. Oklahoma’s upset loss to Kansas State created room for teams to move up, like No. 6 Southern California and No. 7 Kentucky. Tennessee moved up three to No. 8. Oklahoma State remained at nine and North Carolina State jumped to No. 10. NCAAFB – MSU maybe having second thoughts about Tucker’s deal Michigan State blew up the market for college football coaches last season by giving Mel Tucker a massive 10-year contract as the Spartans charged out to a 9-1 start in his second campaign. It was a bit puzzling at the time. After the Spartans were run over for the second straight week to fall to 4-3 in their last seven games, the 10-year megadeal is looking even more questionable. The coach-as-savior mentality is rampant in college football and it is causing desperate schools to make costly decisions, fraught with risk. Golf – Spieth goes 5-0 as Americans rule Presidents Cup again The Presidents Cup stays with the Americans, just like it always does. The Americans finished off a five-point victory. Jordan Spieth capped off a perfect week at Quail Hollow by going 5-0. His match helped set the tone for the Americans. The International team already was depleted by players who defected to Saudi-funded LIV Golf and were not eligible. It still showed plenty of fight. It just doesn’t have a cup to show for it. The Americans won for the ninth straight time, and their only loss was in 1998 since the matches began in 1994. Golf – Champions – Flesch wins PGA Tour Champions event at Pebble Beach Steve Flesch birdied the 18th hole at Pebble Beach to win the Pure Insurance Championship for his second PGA Tour Champions victory of the season. Flesch birdied the first four holes and five on the front nine in a strong start, then stalled on the back. But he got the only birdie he needed on the par-5 finishing hole for a one-stroke victory over Ernie Els, Steven Alker and Paul Stankowski. Flesch closed with a 4-under 68 for a three-round total of 11-under 205 and earned $330,000. The 55-year-old won the Mitsubishi Electric Classic in May. NASCAR – Reddick wins NASCAR playoff race in long, tiring Texas day Tyler Reddick opened the round of 12 in NASCAR’s playoff with a victory at Texas. His win comes a week after being one of the first four Cup drivers knocked out of title contention. No contender won any of the first three races of the playoffs, a first in any round in this postseason format. The trend continued with the eliminated Reddick leading 53 of the final 54 laps on a long race day that went into the night. There were a track-record 17 cautions, a record 36 lead changes, a 56-minute red flag for lightning and multiple tire issues leading to crashes. NASCAR – Tumultuous, tiring start to NASCAR’s round of 12 at Texas The 334 laps at Texas Motor Speedway provided quite a tumultuous start to the NASCAR playoff round of 12. There were a lot of tire issues that contributed to a track-record 16 cautions. There was also a 56-minute red flag for lightning, and a record 36 lead changes among 19 drivers. Chase Elliott entered as the points leader, and was ahead in the race around the midway part when he had hard contact and a fiery finish. Playoff contender Christopher Bell also got knocked out after a tire issue. And there were some bumping between William Byron and Denny Hamlin. Ty France supplied three hits, including his 16th homer, and scored three runs with two RBIs. Carlos Santana had a two-run homer for Seattle, which has won four of its last five games. George Kirby (6-3) allowed only two hits in five scoreless innings. Tigers starter Matt Manning (1-2) gave up seven runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. Royals 9, White Sox 7 – Pratto 2 HRs lead Royals; La Russa out, Chisox 5th L in row Rookie Nick Pratto hit two home runs to highlight a career-high four-hit performance and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 9-7. Chicago has lost five in a row. White Sox manager Tony La Russa missed the game because of an unspecified medical issue. The team said the 77-year-old Hall of Famer was out on the recommendation of his doctors and would undergo further testing Wednesday. Gavin Sheets homered twice and drove in five runs for the White Sox. Salvador Perez and Michael A. Taylor each homered and drove in three runs for the Royals. Pratto added a double and also had three RBIs. Blue Jays 5, Cubs 3 – Hernández, Guerrero homer to back Gausman, Jays top Cubs 5-3 Teoscar Hernández hit a three-run homer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also went deep and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3. Kevin Gausman pitched six solid innings to win his second straight decision as the Blue Jays won back-to-back games after losing their previous three. Toronto is in position for an AL wild card. Guerrero finished with three hits and two RBIs. Willson Contreras and Christopher Morel hit solo home runs for the Cubs, but Contreras left in the sixth inning with an apparent leg injury. Contreras limped around the bases after his homer. Tonight Chicago Cubs (TBD) at Toronto (White 1-4), 7:07 p.m. Seattle (Gonzales 9-12) at Detroit (Alexander 3-8), 7:10 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:50 Kansas City (Bubic 2-9) at Chicago White Sox (Lynn 3-5), 8:10 p.m. MLB – Clark says push to unionize minor leaguers off to good start Major League Baseball Players Association head Tony Clark is confident that at least 30% of minor league players will sign union authorization cards in the coming days and weeks. That would pave the way forward to start the process of creating a separate bargaining unit from the big leaguers. Clark said there has been a “tremendous response.” Signed cards from 30% of minor leaguers in the bargaining unit would allow the union to file a petition with the National Labor Relations Board asking for a union authorization election, which would be decided by majority vote. NFL – St. Joe Alumni makes Colts’ 53-man roster One former player that played under the Friday night lights at Dickinson Stadium in St. Joseph, will now be playing in front of the brighter lights and the dome of Lucas Oil Stadium. Wesley French, a 2015 graduate of St. Joseph High School, made the 53-man roster of the Indianapolis Colts. He was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent after going unselected in this year’s NFL Draft. An offensive lineman, French, played significant time in all three of the Colts preseason games. French played his college football at Western Michigan. FIFA – FIFA safeguarding program used at under-20 Women’s World Cup The under-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica was the first youth tournament to use FIFA’s safeguarding program, which is aimed at keeping participants and fans safe from abuse, exploitation and harassment. FIFA announced that all 32 games were staffed by a safeguarding official as well as a representative from Costa Rica’s National Children’s Institute. Participants were also briefed about abuse and how to report it. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – WNBA Semifinals (best of five) Tonight Connecticut Sun at Chicago Sky, 8:00 p.m. (CTS Leads 1-0) Tennis – US Open – Venus Williams, Raducanu, Osaka all out in US Open 1st round Past U.S. Open champions Venus Williams, Naomi Osaka and Emma Raducanu all have lost in straight sets in the first round of the U.S. Open. Williams, who won two of her seven major titles in New York, was beaten by Alison Van Uytvanck in straight sets Tuesday. Their match came a day after Serena Williams won her first-round match in a much fuller and louder Arthur Ashe Stadium. Venus, who turned 42 in June, has not made any pronouncements about her future in tennis, unlike her younger sibling. Osaka is also a two-time title winner at the U.S. Open and was beaten by Danielle Collins. Raducanu became the third defending champion at Flushing Meadows to bow out in the first round, eliminated by Alizé Cornet. NCAAFB – Recent success secures Notre Dame’s treasured independence Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick tells The Associated Press that the Fighting Irish’s position as a major college football independent is stronger now than when he stepped into the job in 2008. Despite massive change throughout college sports, Notre Dame’s success on the field has made it even more unlikely that Notre Dame football will join a conference. The fifth-ranked Fighting Irish begin their season Saturday night at No. 2 Ohio State. Notre Dame is coming off its fifth straight double-digit victory season. NCAA – ‘Arms race’: NIL compensation now a potent recruiting weapon The NCAA instituted a policy last summer allowing athletes to benefit from their name, image and likeness. The idea was that it would give established players a chance to profit off their fame but wouldn’t be used as a recruiting weapon. That’s not how it’s worked out. The NCAA emphasizes that rules remain in effect to avoid pay-for-play situations or improper inducements. But there’s nothing stopping colleges from pointing out to recruits how much their athletes on campus have made through NIL compensation deals. It has now become common. IIHF – US beats Canada 5-2 at women’s hockey world championship Megan Keller had a goal and an assist as the United States rallied for a 5-2 victory over Olympic champion Canada in group play at the women’s hockey world championship. Lacey Eden scored the winner in the third period to help the Americans beat their longtime rival and close out group play undefeated in central Denmark. The teams are heavy favorites to meet again in Sunday’s final. The quarterfinals are Thursday. The U.S. will face Hungary, while Canada will play Sweden. Group B winner Czechia will play Finland, and Switzerland faces Japan. Golf – McIlroy prepares to ‘stomach’ LIV Golf players at Wentworth It sure doesn’t sound like Wentworth will be a place for PGA Tour players and LIV Golf players to visit over tea. There are 18 LIV players who have entered the BMW PGA Championship next week at European tour headquarters.
