Angels’ Ohtani voted majors’ top DH for 2nd straight year

Shohei Ohtani has been voted the majors' best designated hitter for the second consecutive season. The Los Angeles Angels' two-way slugger won the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award, beating out Houston's Yordan Alvarez as the top player in the position in 2022. Ohtani, who won the AL MVP award unanimously in 2021 and finished second in the MVP voting this season, is the first player to win the designated hitter trophy in back-to-back years since David Ortiz won it five straight times from 2003-07. Ohtani batted .273 with 34 homers, 95 RBIs, 11 stolen bases and a .875 OPS that was good for 10th in the majors. He led all designated hitters with at least 100 at-bats in hits, runs, total bases, triples, homers, RBIs and walks, while his six multi-homer games tied Troy Glaus' franchise record with the Angels. Ohtani also had an 18-game hitting streak during the season. Alvarez finished second in the voting after an outstanding offensive season with the World Series champion Houston Astros, but the Cuban slugger played only 77 games as a DH. He finished third in the AL MVP voting behind the Yankees' Aaron Judge and Ohtani. Ohtani is the 11th player to be named the majors' top designated hitter multiple times during the award's 49 years of existence. He is the only Japanese player and the only Angels player to win it. The winner is chosen by a panel of 100 media members and public relations employees. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The Los Angeles Angels' Shohei Ohtani is once again in the AL MVP race for the second year in a row, and we're taking a look at how he stacks up against his competition, Yordan Alvarez, and of course, Aaron Judge! Will Shohei's combined pitching and hitting stats be enough to net him another MVP trophy, or will Aaron Judge's home run record season stand in his way? We'll dive into the stats in segment 1! Then, Shohei Ohtani was not a finalist for the AL Cy Young Award... what?!? While he may not have been the one to walk away with the trophy, Mike and Jon make the case that he should have been considered as a finalist against the likes of Justin Verlander, Dylan Cease, and Alek Manoah. Who do the Super Halo Bros. think Ohtani should have been a finalist over? We'll tell you in segment 2! Plus, even though GM Perry Minasian said that Shohei will not be traded this offseason, it could still be possible that he will move to a contender at the Trade Deadline this summer, especially if the Angels are out of contention. While we want to see the Halos try to go for it with Ohtani in 2023, if the worst-case scenario happens, the team could still get a haul for Shohei. We'll take a look at some big Rental deals of the past and show you why the Angels could still win big at the deadline! GET IN OUR VOICEMAIL!  CALL US: (714) 409-6396 Tell us what's on your mind! The Book of Joe Podcast begins with the Astros closing out a World Series win. Hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon discuss Houston being one of the best teams all season.  Yordan Alvarez was really impressive all season and the pitching came through in all aspects.  With the amount of strikeouts the Astros pitching got, it didn't leave many balls in play for a defense that was still spectacular.  Joe thinks this win will push teams, especially in the AL West, to try and create a hitting lineup that can move the ball around the field.  Dusty Baker finally gets his World Series championship after 25 years of managing.  Dusty has had the right demeanor to last so long in the game and had the perfect mentality to calm the situation and bring credibility back to Houston. As for the game itself, Tom was surprised to see the Phillies mood just tank when they were down.  We find out the one pivotal moment that changed the outcome. The 118th World Series was entertaining and both teams represented the game well.  We wrap up with music heard in Baker's office through the series.  Joe thinks the season should end with ZZ Top and 'Sharp Dressed Man' for Baker's upcoming offseason. Hour 1: Yankees/Cleveland game 2 is today at 1pm and we know some people will be inconvenienced by that. Boomer is expecting a Yankees sweep and thinks they should already be looking ahead to Houston. Gio thinks the Yanks will win the series 3 games to 1. Boomer has been watching the other MLB playoff games and he says it's a lot of HRs. Eddie is out today because his wife is away and he's letting the dogs out. Jerry is here for his first update but first we talk about the times when Mike & The Maddog were fighting and not talking to each other off the air. Jerry starts with the Astros beating the Mariners thanks to another HR by Yordan Alvarez. Washington beat the Bears in a ‘scoring bonanza' 12-7. Ron Rivera went off in the press conference after being asked about Carson Wentz and then walked off. Draymond Green was asked what he did when he was away from the club. The Islanders have a new goal siren. In the final segment of the hour, Gio wonders if the guy who proposed at the Islanders game was a social media setup.  Hour 2: We got another bad football game last night, a 12-7 game between Washington and Chicago. The broadcasters did address the Daniel Snyder situation pre-game and during the game, so props to them. Average to below average QBs are to blame for bad games. A caller asks about the Todd Bowles video where a reporter asks him about being a black coach going up against another black coach in Mike Tomlin. Jerry returns for an update and starts with audio from Todd Bowles. Jerry has play by play audio from the Washington/Chicago game on TNF. Ron Rivera went off in his postgame press conference about Carson Wentz questions. Draymond Green talked about his time away from the Warriors. We heard from Sam Rosen with some play by play of last night's Rangers game. The Islanders have a new goal horn and we all want Boomer to crank it. In the final segment of the hour, the midges are back in Cleveland. Dan in Carteret calls in. He has been in the Yankee Stadium parking lot since 6am.  Hour 3: Boomer sees today's Yankee game as a ‘cake walk' as they are a light hitting team. If Judge leads them to a World Series win that will be another huge bump for Judge. A caller is angry Boomer is calling it a cakewalk. We took calls on today's Yankees game, Judge's contract and the Giants. Jerry returns for an update and says he will now have lunch with Dan in Carteret. The Astros beat the Mariners and take a 2-0 series lead. Washington beat Chicago on TNF 12-7. Draymond Green met the media and discussed the situation with Jordan Poole. The Rangers beat the Wild last night. In the final segment of the hour, Brandon Tierney is going to Green Bay to see the Jets. And Gio once heard Ron Jaworski call two players the C word.  Hour 4: Boomer seems to think Theo Epstein is coming to the Mets to become team President. A caller calls in to tell Boomer he's a ‘loser Mets fan' and he doesn't want his Yankees passive aggressive positivity. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with some MLB playoff talk from Dusty Baker of the Astros. Washington beat Chicago 12-7 in a boring TNF game that Ian Eagle called ‘a scoring bonanza'. Ron Rivera went off on the media after the game and then walked off. Al Michaels did talk about Daniel Snyder's situation during the game. In the final segment of the week, our NFL picks!
