This episode is dedicated to animal rights and vegan activist Liz Dealey or Lizzie as she was affectionately  known.  Lizzie was tireless and relentless in her aim to bring more kindness and consideration into the world. Her whirlwind energy saw her found Melbourne Chicken Save, and dedicate decades of focus, passion and time into the animal rights activist landscape, especially in Melbourne.  Her inclusive leadership, her sense of humour, the heart on her sleeve way she carried herself, and her punk rock energy endeared her to several generations of activists.  Lizzie's life and works are remembered here in this episode by Stace from Melbourne Chicken Save, Pam Ahern from Edgar's Mission, and with written tributes by many more.   Some of Liz's music histroy: The Sputniks (1979-1980) - Liz on Bass 'Second Glance / Our Boys' (1979) Acid drops (1982-1985) - Liz on Vocals & Guitar 'Surfin' Prostitute Beat' (1984) The Twenty Second Sect (1986-1991) - Liz on Vocals & Guitar 'The Wailing House' (1986) 'Get That Charge' (1988) 'UXB' (1989) 'Unexploded' (1989) Pure Purple - Liz on Vocals & Guitar 'Demo Album' (unreleased) Music played: 'Kiss My Ass' Pure Purple (from 'Demo Album' - 90's) 'Hey Baby' The Twenty Second Sect (from 'Unexploded' - 1989) 'I'll Be Your Navigator' The Twenty Second Sect (from 'Get That Charge' - 1988) 'Look Her In The Eye' Pure Purple (from 'Demo Album' - 90's) 'Abbatoir' Pure Purple (from 'Demo Album' - 90's)

Richard Oglesby, known as Trikky Oges to his friends, spent most of his life working in industries that exploited animals, until he started a job at Edgar's Mission, which changed his whole life. Trikky began his career in shearing sheds across outback Australia when he was 20 years old. He was a zoo keeper at Adelaide Zoo for seven years and recalls the boredom animals in captivity experienced. Trikky then became a groom at a top cattle stud in Victoria and later a contractor at equestrian centres.Trikky met Pam Ahern, Founder of Edgar's Mission, at a local farmers Markets and was invited to join the Edgar's team in May 2015. Trikky recalls arriving at Edgar's Mission and feeling an overwhelming sense of joy when he was met by Saturday, a special needs Suffolk sheep in a cart. He met all the beautiful residents and recognised their strong will to live. He began to reflect on his food choices and as a result, Trikky went vegetarian at age 68.Trikky's 2018 new years resolution was to go vegan, which he accomplished with the encouragement and support of the Edgar's crew, who supplied him with recipes and meals.  Trikky is a testament to it being "never too late to change".Trikky attended a Save Movement rally where Pam was the guest speaker. He then came across an Anonymous for the Voiceless Cube of Truth in Southbank and realised being active for the animals was the next necessary step in his journey. He attended the next Cube event and has been a regular member ever since. In this episode, Trikky shares the importance of learning from each other, going outside your comfort zone for the animals and being a proud example of diversity within the vegan movement. https://www.instagram.com/trikkyoges/https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100031136912915

Welcome to episode 49  of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week's  guest is Pam Ahern, Founder of Edgar's Mission in Lancefield, Victoria, Australia. Pam shares her incredible journey from packing lolli's ,as she calls them in a factory, and being a champion equestrian, to providing shelter and direct care for homeless, abused, injured and abandoned farm animals. You will quickly learn that kindness is at the heart of everything Pam does. When a little pig named Edgar Alan came into Pam's life it brought her down a path she never imagined. This is truly an incredible story and one that even involves the actor, James Cromwell, from the hit movie “Babe”.  Pam gave up her full-time job, hung up her riding boots, and dedicated her life to the protection of farm animals. Why, you may ask? Well you will need to listen in to hear why Pam built the 153 acre sanctuary that is currently caring for 500 farm animal residents. Every animal that comes through the sanctuary doors is given a special name, treated as an individual, and surrounded by so much love. Many that arrive are in need of immediate and very special care. The one thing that is truly amazing is how some of the animals support their counterparts who are in need of that additional help and support. You will hear about Vet Nurses Ruby the dog and Tabitha the cat.  You will fall in love with Calvin Swine, Mr. Invisible, Captain Kirk the Rooster, Smudge, and so many more as you watch them through their videos via FB and Instagram. Visit the Today is the Day YouTube Channel to see pictures of these special animals and Edgar's Mission.  Pam is also the proud Australian ambassador for World Animal Day and was a 2014 Victorian Local Hero Finalist in the Australian of the Year Awards. On top of all of that she is also the author of the book, 'The Gift of Kindness – True Stories of Rescue Farm Animals'. She shares an incredible mantra, "If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others, why wouldn't we?" Listen in to hear Pam's incredible answer to, 'if I knew then, what I know now'.  Pam is the only one in all 49 episodes with this answer!Next week my guest is John Belizaire. He flunked the third grade and had to repeat it. That left a lasting impact on Perry's life. A local school Coach saw how quick Perry could run while he was playing freeze tag with the neighborhood kids and encouraged Perry to play football.  Back then, Perry says he would watch professional football games on TV and would not just mimic the moves when he would play, but he would become the professional player in his mind. He goes on to talk about the importance of the Law of Becoming. There is a must listen section of this episode where Perry shares about the strained relationship he had with his Dad and how he went about getting the answers he needed. There are so many poignant lessons and stories shared here that will touch your heart. As a master storyteller, Perry's teachings inspire small and large groups alike to stretch themselves to overcome barriers and achieve thei"r personal goals. His TEDx in Greenville is a must listen. Wait until the end of that TEDx and bring your tissues. His, 'do all you can, while you can' message is so important!Perry is a father of 6 and Pops to his grandson. I'm Nelsie Spencer. I'm a writer, performer, writing teacher/mentor/coach. And a podcaster. I have over 30 years of experience as a writer: I produced a playwright (My Heart Belongs to Daddy), an award-winning screenwriter (Valley Inn), and a published novelist (The Playgroup). My writing career began when I wrote myself a role with my best friend Laury Marker. Our play, My Heart Belongs to Daddy,  premiered at Lucille Lortel's White Barn Theatre in Westport, Ct. And had 3 more sold-out and critically acclaimed productions! Along the way, we worked with producer Dash Epstein and director Morton DeCosta (both Tony-Award winners). Since My Heart Belongs to Daddy, I've written stand-up, become a published novelist (The Playgroup) and worked as a radio talk show host with comics Cory Kahaney and Maureen Langan. Nora Ephron called my first screenplay, A Girl's Best Friend, "a brilliant premise and a wonderful screenplay." When she took the script to Sony and they passed on it, she told them, "You're idiots! Read it again!" God bless you, Nora! In 2015 the award-winning indie film, Valley Inn (co-writer with Kim Swink), was released. My time as a radio talk show host, stand-up comic, and actor made podcasting an easy, fun, and inevitable next step. Last year, I created Losing It! with Nelsie Spencer, life lessons from some of my favorite losers. After taking a few decades off from serious acting, I made my way back to the stage last year when I wrote and performed Day of the Dead Daddy, my solo show. It premiered in NYC at The Chain Studio Theatre. This year, I was honored to be invited to perform my show (via Zoom) at The Marsh Theatre's International Solo Show Festival where Day of the Dead Daddy won an Honorable Mention. I plan to bring the show to Edinburgh for their Fringe Festival next summer. Throughout my unorthodox career path I've met and worked with many interesting and influential people such as super-agent Ari Emanuel, feminist icon Gloria Steinem, and Oscar winners Jane Fonda and Mary Tyler Moore. I've been helping other writers find and hone their stories and their voices since 2006. My current mission: To create community, support, and inspiration for the writer.

Pam Ahern's presentation from the recent Australian Animal Activist Forum.Pam is the Founder and Director of farmed animal sanctuary Edgar's Mission (Victoria, Australia).Pam's talk was a journey of self-discovery from animal lover to animal advocate as she explores the role of farm sanctuaries in the bigger picture of creating a kinder world for animals. This is the perfect show to share with friends and family who may not 'get' why you are vegan or those who love animals but are still on the 'journey' towards kindness for all.Freedom of Species would like to thank Pam Ahern and the Animal Activist Forum organisers for granting us permission to broadcast this talk.Edgar's Mission website https://www.edgarsmission.org.au/Edgar's Mission Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/edgarsmission/Edgar's Mission Cooking with Kindness cookbook https://shop.edgarsmission.org.au/Animal Activist Forum website http://www.activistsforum.com/Animal Activist Forum Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/activistsforum/
