In this episode we speak with Jo-Anne McArthur, acclaimed animal photojournalist and founder and president of We Animals Media, an organization whose photographers document the lives of unseen and ignored animals caught within human systems of exploitation and oppression. HIghlights of this episode include: How, motivated by the power of photography to catalyze social change and to raise awareness about animal exploitation, Jo-Anne created a new genre of photojournalism, namely Animal Photo Journalism (APJ); APJ's mission to capture, memorialize, and expose the experiences of animals who are caught within the complex human-dominated systems and whom we fail to see - animals within the industrial food systems, animals used for entertainment, such as in circuses, zoos, aquaria, theme parks, and rodeos, and animals used in research; Jo-Anne's travels to over 60 countries that catalogue our complex relationship with animals, captured in her three books, We Animals, Captive, and Hidden: Animals in the Anthropocene, and her feature role in the acclaimed Canadian documentary, The Ghosts in Our Machines; inspiring stories of animal advocacy and highlights of the work of women on the front lines, captured in the Unbound project by We Animals Media; how Jo-Anne manages the emotional impact of documenting animal suffering while staying committed to animal liberation; and finally, on behalf of our planet which is groaning under the pressure of human dominion, Jo-Anne's reflection on her personal journey of choosing not to have children, emphasizing the importance of considering alternative and richer ways to express love and fulfillment. For 20 years she has been photographing and bearing witness to our complex relationship with animals. She's worked in over 60 countries in just about every industry one can imagine - including: fur farms, factory farms, bear bile farms, zoos, rodeos, circuses, and marine parks with the mission to make the lives of these invisible animals visible. Her images tell the stories of unseen suffering, the stories of what happens when we stop paying attention, of what hopelessness looks like, and of thousands of little lives that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. She is also co-founder of the Unbound Project and the author of two books, We Animals and Captive. And, she was the subject of Liz Marshall's acclaimed documentary, The Ghosts in Our Machine. I have been a super-fan of Jo-Anne's for years, so it felt like a real honor to be able to spend this time with her. #081: Jo-Anne McArthur is the winner of this year's BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition with her beautiful image of a mother kangaroo with a joey in her pocket standing in the midst of a burned eucalyptus plantation. It's something that when you look at it, you can't help but start to put together a puzzle pieces of how we as humans impact the natural environment and how we impact the species that live on this planet alongside us.But… often we think of only the wild animals we effect, such as that kangaroo family. Jo-Anne, however, brings attention to all animals. Jo-Anne McArthur opens the door to a much larger conversation about everything photographers can to advance animal rights. Her agency,  We Animals Media, works with collaborators and partner photographers and creates imagery that opens eyes to the cruelty that we as humans inflict on other species.Inside of this conversation, we talk about:how Jo-Anne documents such traumatic situationshow she works with other photographerswhat clients use this imagery on a global basiscoping mechanisms and traumahope and optimism and laws and more There's a lot inside of this episode that you can take and utilize in your own practice as a conservation visual storyteller. In this episode Jo-Anne shares her journey into veganism and animal rights, what she has learned in twenty years of photographing animals exploited by humans and whether or not she still remains optimistic about humanity.  Also in this episode… Jo-Anne describes how one chance encounter with a macaque monkey, while backpacking in Ecuador, inspired her to share the stories of animals. Jo-Anne tells us about her latest book Hidden: Animals in the Anthropocene. Jo-Anne explains why she refers to the animals used by humans as ‘hidden animals' and why she has devoted her life to telling their stories. ‘We have to create artistic, beautiful images, even of things that are absolutely terrible'. Jo-Anne stresses the importance of producing visually stimulating pictures of animals and likens it to war photography. Tylor shares that, in his time at PETA, they often used Jo-Anne's work in their campaigns. Jo-Anne talks about her organisation We Animals Media; a group of writers, filmmakers and artists, whose focus is to amplify the stories of animals. ‘Anyone doing this front-line animal work needs to have a big focus on resilience'. Jo-Anne discusses the importance of safeguarding her mental health and shares that she has previously suffered from PTSD. ‘I don't think I have become desensitized. I think it is important to keep my heart wide open and just let it break, over and over'. Jo-Anne explains how emotional engagement with her subjects and remaining highly sensitised to the plight of animals is key to her being able to produce such striking images. I’ve got good news, better news and bad news, folks. The good news is that yesterday a book launched that will change minds, hearts and lives around the world. The better news is that Jo-Anne McArthur, co-editor of this book, took time out of an incredibly busy schedule this morning to chat with me about it. The bad news is that, because it’s 2020, the recording software I use didn’t record my side of our conversation. Which, for many, may be the best news of all. Let’s start at the beginning. Hidden: Animals in the Anthropocene by Jo-Anne McArthur and Keith Wilson, with a Foreword by Joaquin Phoenix, is now available. A short synopsis from the book’s media kit: HIDDEN: Animals in the Anthropocene is an unflinching book of photography documenting our relationship with non-human animals in the 21st Century. It focuses on the invisible animals in our lives: those with whom we have a close relationship and yet fail to see. They are the animals we eat and the animals we wear. They are the animals used in research and for entertainment, as well as the animals we sacrifice in the name of tradition and religion. HIDDEN includes the work of a global community of photographers, 40 of the world’s best animal photojournalists who work globally to investigate, document, and expose animal use.  I spent a few hours flipping through my review copy, experiencing the images and reading the accompanying essays, facts and contextual copy. My review can be broken down to two sentences: Hidden is the heart-wrenching documentation of the unnatural things we’ve done to this planet and its inhabitants. We can only hope that this clear story – one that shows truth without apology or hyperbole – is enough to help us change our ways. Jo-Anne, founder of We Animals, joined me for a conversation about the new book; but as I noted, an error in my recording software kept only Jo-Anne’s part of that conversation. I spent about an hour and a half trying to reverse engineer my questions (I keep notes, not fully written questions) before realizing that there’s ethical implications behind that I’m not comfortable with and it would likely just sound weird. As such, I’m presenting Jo-Anne’s answers, again the important part, with simple subject prompts from me. I apologize to listeners and Jo-Anne for this issue, though I think Jo-Anne’s own interview skills really shine as a result. This episode is brought to you by AnimalStone.com. This episode is later than originally anticipated – between human and canine health issues and some technical whoopsies, things got delayed. And before we get into it, I want to let you know that JoAnne and I get into some heavy conversation about compassion fatigue and the emotional weight of advocacy work. If that isn’t something you’re up for – no problem! Please know that there are many available resources to help manage self-care, compassion fatigue, and other emotional or mental-health related topics. Start by talking to your doctor, caregiver, or Googling what local resources exist in your municipality or county. Now let’s get started with this week’s episode. Photographs tell stories. Some of them are funny, some sad, some tragic, some a mixture of many emotions. Regardless of what story is being told, photography has a way of getting to people when words have failed. And that’s why We Animals Media matters. Through a variety of storytelling methods – including founder Jo-Anne McArthur’s incredible photography and photojournalism – We Animals Media is a home for a catalogue accessible to traditional media, advocates, and everyone in between. It’s also the site of exciting new projects – like a We Animals masterclass, book sales, mentorships, and really, more than I can say in a short introduction. I was thrilled to chat with Jo-Anne about the history of We Animals, the current projects she’s developing with a growing team, and what the future holds for the world’s premiere animal advocacy storytellers. In this episode, Kathy Stevens and Jo McArthur discuss: Jo’s journey from street photography to photographing captive animals in factories, zoos, labs, and fur farms. Why Jo feels it’s imperative to show animals in the situations we’ve put them in. How she engages with the animals she photographs. The building of “We Animals Media” to expand Jo’s capacity to reach larger numbers. Key Takeaways: The camera is a tool for social change. Animals understand when we’re trying to help them. A book gives one’s work historical weight and value. Sometimes, if we’re trying to do the greatest good for the greatest number, we have to give up some of what we love. “I’m asking you to look at the cruelty and I’m asking you to self-reflect." – Jo-Anne McArthur Connect with Jo McArthur: Twitter: @WeAnimals Facebook: We Animals Website: WeAnimalsMedia.org & WeAnimalsArchive.org Books: We Animals & Captive Instagram: @weanimals Connect with Kathy Stevens: Facebook: facebook.com/kathy.stevens.CAS, facebook.com/catskillanimalsanctuary Twitter: twitter.com/CASanctuary/ Books: https://store.casanctuary.org/collections/books/products/where-the-blind-horse-sings Website: Catskill Animal Sanctuary Instagram: instagram.com/catskill_animal_sanctuary/ YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/CASanctuary

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

We can barely believe it’s been a full year since this project first started. In that year we’ve had dozens of interviews with internationally-recognized scientists and advocates. We’re heard one-on-one interviews with those who have witnessed tragedy and those who have stopped cruelty. We’ve worked with great people Psychologist and beaver believer Dr. Heidi Perryman, rock star and animal lover Bif Naked, photographer Jo-Anne McArthur and Lesley Sampson of Coyote Watch Canada. We’ve talked about issues ranging from wolf ecosystem protection and the natural history of beavers to keeping squirrels out of attics and how to talk about co-existence with your schools. And through it all, we’ve had you, our incredible supporters, listening in. And what better way to start Season Two of Defender Radio than with two of our absolute favourite guests? We’ll be hearing from Brad Gates, owner of AAA Gates Wildlife Control on raccoons in Toronto – why they’re here and how we can live alongside them, as well as Dr. Marc Bekoff, discussing his upcoming book, Rewildling Our Hearts. Let’s get started with season two!

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

One year ago a small budget documentary was premiered at the HotDocs film festival in Toronto. The film followed the journey of a photographer – Jo-Anne McArthur – as she explored the exploitation of animals in modern society. In the year that passed, The Ghosts in Our Machine has become a staple in the work of advocates everywhere. With harrowing – yet not gruesome - scenes inside factory farms and fur farms, Ghosts is a powerful yet palatable look into a world many try to ignore.  To celebrate this one year landmark and the release of The Ghosts on DVD and the iTunes Store, Jo-Anne McArthur joined Defender Radio for a candid conversation.

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

It’s finally here! After a great deal of quiet background work, we’re pleased to launch this first official episode of Defender Radio, a new podcast that focuses on the fur industry, wildlife, advocacy and everything animal related. We also must thank Brad Gates of Gates Wildlife Control in Toronto who has been a strong supporter of APFA and has signed on as the title sponsor for Defender Radio. In this inaugural episode hear interviews from Dr. Marc Bekoff, Brad Gates, Jasmine Polsinelli and Jo-Anne McArthur.

Derek & Lo Vee interview animal rights photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, who is known for her project We Animals in which she documents, through photography, animals in the human environment who are being used for food, clothing, research, experimentation, work, entertainment, slavery and companionship. Her photos give us a view into their world that is often shocking not because she attempts to show horrific scenes of violence, but rather because she shows the day to day existense of the beings we share the world with. The photos are artistic and taken from perspectives that betray our typical human-centric and speciest gaze. The We Animals project has opened up new opportunities for Jo-Anne, and she is currently the subject of a documentary film by Liz Marshall called The Ghosts in Our Machine. "The film follows Jo-Anne over the course of a year as she photographs several animal stories in parts of Canada, the U.S. and in Europe. Each story is a window into global animal industries: Food, Fashion, Entertainment and Research."
