Well then perhaps I could interest you in this extremely bizarre episode of the bounty hunter show Renegade?!You see Cromwell decided that he was no longer content to be known as the star of Babe, he also wanted to stretch his acting legs and take on other, more sinister roles. Tread Perilously's summer Patreon request month winds down with a visit to 1990s westerns via an episode of The Young Riders called "The Peacemakers." When Hickok rides into Glen Creek, he sees an Amish baptism interrupted by a gang of interlopers. Aiming to help, he soon learns the small religious community is a target for persecution by the nearby town. The tension is stoked by the local newspaper publisher, who has more than one reason to want the Amish out of the county. Complicating matters: Hickok has made eyes at one of the Amish girls. Also, a mysterious man puts a washed-up gunfighter on Hickok's trail. Meanwhile, McCloud and the Kid discuss their relationship. For various reasons, Erik and Justin start with a discussion of HBO shows. Erik praises Don Franklin, despite his absence in this episode. Stephen Baldwin's tendency to coast gets examined. Despite everything, star Josh Brolin turns out to be good here. Guest star James Cromwell leads to a lot of Star Trek and L.A. Confidential talk. Brolin's hairdo comes down for a hard critique. The C-plot with McCloud and the Kid gets revised while the B-plot proves to feature a Justin favorite. The pair try to determine why the show is so coy about the Amish being Amish and Erik finds the exact right movie to remind Justin how he knows guest actor Brenda Bakke.

Episode 469"Sugar"Cinematographer: Richard Rutkowski. An active cinematographer whose work encompasses indie features, documentary, commercials, and major streaming productions, Richard is based in New York and also works extensively overseas. His photography on the first seasons of FX's Cold War spy drama The Americans drew widespread critical acclaim. Likewise his camerawork on the wartime drama Manhattan, set in Los Alamos during the top secret creation of the atom bomb, earned glowing mentions and two ASC Award Nominations for Best Cinematography. Recent projects include Apple's Sugar, starring Colin Farrell and James Cromwell, and the WW II epic Masters of the Air, produced by Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Additional credits include the pilot and three seasons of Amazon's international action hit Jack Ryan, USA Network's surrealist drama Falling Water, produced by Gale Ann Hurd, and Hulu's Castle Rock for producers Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason. Most recently Richard filmed the pilot block of The Hunting Wives, a new series produced by Lionsgate for the Starz Network.Growing up in Provincetown, Massachusetts; Fort Smith, Arkansas; and Water Mill, New York - disparate locations that traced the career of his late father, landscape painter Casimir Rutkowski - Richard developed an appreciation of context, diversity, and the examined details of individual environments. His early ambition was to become an architect. While attending Harvard College, Richard began making 16mm short films mixing live action, stop animation, and electronic sound composition. One such project was Sunshine Superman, created with the artist Christopher Knowles and screened in festivals and in art gallery exhibition ever since. While working as first assistant to extraordinary cinematographers such as Ed Lachman ASC; Eric Edwards; David Stockton ASC; and the late Freddie Francis BSC, Rutkowski continued lensing short films and indie features for emerging directors. After earning a Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance for Kevin Asher Green's minimalist mini-DV film Homework, Rutkowski shot director Neil Burger's debut feature, Interview with the Assassin, nominated for Independent Spirit Awards in Best First Feature and Best Cinematography categories.Working with a legendary mentor, theater maestro Robert Wilson, over 20 years led to Richard filming the artist's initial HD Video Portraits. Meticulously staged, slow-moving images of Mikhail Baryshnikov, Winona Ryder, Brad Pitt, Steve Buscemi, and Robert Downey Jr. sparked a growing collection that has been exhibited internationally ever since. Over a three year period Rutkowski produced, shot and directed The Space in Back of You in homage to Japanese dancer Suzushi Hanayagi, a mesmerizing, eclectic talent whose approach to stage movement deeply influenced Wilson and other avant-guard luminaries. This film premiered at New York's Lincoln Center and has screened on Arte Channel, the Baryshnikov Center for Dance, and at the Pompidou Center in Paris. Filming groups of workers and individual laborers in painterly long takes, Richard collaborated with artist Sharon Lockhart on Double Tide, Lunchbreak and Exit, projects since screened at MoMA in New York, LA's Hammer Museum and other major gallery and museum installations over the last twelve years.https://linktr.ee/mondaymorningcritic

The Longest Yard is a total smorgasbord of tones, jokes, and cultural winks, whiffing at laughter from start to finish. We get a jail yard-sized salmagundi of half-baked jokes. Wet Willies. Terry Crewes peddling McDonald's cheeseburgers, fries, and McAssholes. Pegging the refs in the nuts. Dan Patrick cameo as a cop, clowning on Frodo. Goldberg rockin' an XXL jockstrap. Tracy Morgan as a prison yard Ladyboy. Adam Sandler drinking a six-pack during a high-speed chase. Chris Rock riffin' on white guys and Prozac. James Cromwell acting much too prestigiously for a Happy Madison project. Rob Schneider yelling, "You can do it!" as a callback to The Waterboy. Burt Reynolds hired as a nod to the much-superior original. Bob Sapp doing his best Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile impression. The Great Khali looking huge. Nelly, band-aid on his cheek and all. Jim Rome and Chris Berman being themselves, offering tongue-in-cheek color commentary. Kevin Nash, Brian Bosworth, and William Fichtner doing their best as prison guards, trying to infuse redemptive nuance into their villiany. Joey Diaz being chubby, homophobic, and unfunny. Steve Austin being stone-cold silly. Suffice to say, this one wasn't for us. But we do our best to tackle it anyway. Enjoy the smackdown!

Phil Iscove joins to discuss the work of the visionary director and his brilliant, underseen sequel to everyone's favorite talking pig movie, 'Babe: Pig in the City'. Following the breakout success of 1995's 'Babe', Miller delivered a darker, more adventurous story that sees the titular pig braving a cold, indifferent Metropolis (featuring a fascinating assembly of familiar landmarks from cityscapes around the world) and winning the hearts of its embittered animal residents through his courage, cunning, and compassion. Gene Siskel's #1 film of 1998 and a favorite of musician and actor Tom Waits, the film has steadily found its faithful audience after an initially disappointing box office run, anticipating some of Miller's careerlong challenges with compelling audiences to gamble on his bold visions. We discuss the film's narrative and thematic swings, how Miller takes the story in fascinating new directions, and why the filmmaker's insistence on never repeating himself becomes both the film's greatest asset and its toughest barrier for entry. Then, we assess the movie's incredible technical achievements, and why making this film feels like it might have been just as challenging as Miller's work on any of the Mad Max films. We also praise the film's willingness to embrace difficult emotions and never shy away from challenging its target audience of young viewers with harrowing and heartrending scenes of animals in extrememly human experiences of distress, opression, and danger. Finally, we turn our eyes to George Miller's latest entry in his long-running action series, 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga'. Epic in scope, bold in vision, and featuring some of Miller's most ambitious storytelling, 'Furiosa' has been embraced critically, but is failing to find its audience, with disappointing box office returns and a near-guaruntee of a short theatrical run.On the back half of this episode, we make the case for 'Furiosa', praise its grandeur as well as its nuance, and offer up some readings of the film that challenge many of the common criticisms we've seen so far.Follow Phil Iscove on Twitter.Listen to and support Podcast Like It's... on Patreon and wherever you stream podcasts.....Our theme song is 'Mirror' by Chris Fish.

We're finally getting around to our RANDOMLY GENERATED MOVIE REVIEW that we randomly picked after discussing Roman Polanski's “Oliver Twist” several weeks ago and we're going full-on DAD BONER THEATER because we're gonna be cracking open our very first movie in the world of Tom “Fancy” Clancy. Yep. This is the most we've encountered of the fictional character known as Jack Ryan and this soft reboot starring Ben Affleck as the third person to ever play this character seems ultra relevant in a new post 9-11 world but, in fact, this movie was completed before that happened. We're talking about Phil Alden Robinson's 2003 thriller “THE SUM OF ALL FEARS”. M'man James Cromwell is in this thought, as well as a swaggering Morgan Freeman mic dropping intelligence bombs on the heads of the young folk under his wing. That person is Jack Ryan and HOLY SHIT A NUCLEAR BOMB GOES OFF IN THIS MOVIE. NOBODY TOLD ME! BALTIMOOOOOORRRREEEE!!!! WHERE'S JOHN WATERS!?!? WHO DID THIS??? WHO!?!?!? Stay tuned until the end as we randomly generate our next random movie to review that we will get to. Eventually. SIDE HUSTLE 9: FARMER HOGGETT'S VOYAGE HOME Travel across the cosmos and back in time this week with TGTPTU and the crews of two starships Enterprise. Special guest Martin Harries from the Film vs Film podcast joins Capt. Ken and his number one Thomas this week to boldly go where numerous podcasting Trekkies have gone before as they explore two Academy (Starfleet) Award-winning actor-directors:STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME (1986) starring and directed by Leonard Nimoy in his second directorial contribution to the Star Trek movie franchise. Nimoy would subsequently direct the top-grossing film of the following year, Three Men and Baby, but first he got the opportunity to give his vision to the Trek franchise. The Voyage Home was a hit with the general public, promoting an environmental message of deep concern to Nimoy who didn't want violence if he was going to direct what most fans consider the end of an internal Trek trilogy that began with Wrath of Khan.STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996) starring and directed by Jonathan Frakes in his feature debut as a director in this eighth Star Trek franchise film and the second for The Next Generation crew. Lighter on humor (but surprisingly also featuring a nuclear wessel), portions of First Contact are shot like a horror movie as The Borg (The Next Generation's eternal alien enemy) travel(s) back in time and infect(s) the crew aboard the Enterprise while the away team shakes a tail feather and drinks moonshine with the yet-to-be-legendary Zefram Cochrane portrayed by James Cromwell one year after playing Farmer Hoggett in Babe. “But what of Shatner?” serious nerds of film and fiends of the franchise might ask. Look, nerd/fiend, the ‘final frontier' might be a destination to boldly go, but it's a shit flick and gives credence to the cursed “odd number” Trek movies. We'd prefer to listen to 106 minutes of remixed whale song than suffer again through the trauma of Star Trek V: The Favored Nations Clause in Kirk's Contract (1989). So, in short, double dumbass on you.Now set headphones to stun and ready and prepare yourself for yammering speed and jettisoned opinions. Bad Dads Film Review

Writer and producer George Miller spent nearly a decade attempting to bring his adaptation of Dick King-Smith's novel The Sheep-Pig to the big screen, eventually teaming with co-writer and director Christopher Noonan for 1993's BABE, the story of a pig who wants to be a sheepdog. Completely timeless with moments of sweet sincerity balanced against the movies desire to stay true to the animals perspective and its theme of animals needing a purpose other than to be eaten, James Cromwell steals the show as far as the humans are concerned as the quietly nurturing Farmer Hoggett. With so many great messages, practical effects which continue to impress and heart-warming performances of course one of us will provide a dissenting voice against this universally acknowledged classic. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. IT'S EUROVISION TIME! But before we get there, we simply MUST take your calls about thoroughbred horses, Elvis Presley's granddaughter, Eva Mendes's new gig (spoiler: it's not an acting role), and James Cromwell's deeply held beliefs. As they say, so goes James Cromwell, so goes the world. Next up: EUROVISION! If this is your first time listening to our annual Eurovision discussion, don't bother asking why we care so much. There's no big explanation here, we just do! It's fun, even as Americans! And you can stream it live [on Peacock!] this year, so there's no excuse not to tune in for the final on Saturday. Call 619.WHO.THEM to leave questions, comments & concerns, and we may play your call on a future episode. Support us and get a ton of bonus content over on Patreon.com/WhoWeekly.
