This is the third episode of a special 4-part takeover with cast & creatives from Hulu's new musical series UP HERE. Make sure to stream the entire 21 song UP HERE soundtrack everywhere you find your music. Director Tommy Kail and choreographer Sonya Tayeh have teamed up for the first time in Hulu's new rom-com musical, “Up Here”. Not wanting to stick to just one medium, Sonya talks about being an expansive artist and following wherever her passion takes her. Tommy also shares his deal with Disney, putting a musical on mainstream TV and how Kirsten and Bobby's ability to make musical comedy resonated with him. While Sonya has done numerous projects and won awards already, the choreographer shares open up about dealing with imposter syndrome, calling it "big, old, scary monsters" and why she loves physicalizing them. Working as the director and choreographer for "Up Here", both Tommy and Sonya share how they operate, including collaborating with other creatives and shooting with at least two cameras at all times. Sonya reflects more on her love for collaborating, trying out all the options, starting a conversation and hearing what her collaborators have to say. Tommy, on the other hand, speaks about consciously surrounding himself with talented people that make him a better person. With Sonya and Tommy's love for collaborating, it's no surprise that the two found each other to create something beautiful. Sonya Tayeh is a TONY Award-winning choreographer and director. She has choreographed for renowned artists, including Madonna, Miley Cyrus and Florence and the Machine. She's been nominated twice for Emmy Awards for her work on So You Think You Can Dance, and won the Lucille Lortel and Obie Awards for “Outstanding Choreography” for her work on David Henry Hwang's dance-play “Kung Fu”, for which she also received a Drama Desk nomination. She made her Broadway debut as the choreographer for the hit show, “Moulin Rouge the Musical” and worked on the production of “Sing Street”. Sonya has recently joined the creative team for the upcoming production of "Gatsby" and “The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window” and is gearing up for the world premiere of “Is It Thursday Yet?”, a play that she directed, co-choreographed and co-conceived. Tommy Kail is a theatre director known for directing the Off-Broadway and Broadway productions of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musicals “In the Heights” and “Hamilton” for which he won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Direction of Musical. His other credits include “Lombardi”, “Magic/Bird”, “Randy Newman's Faust and The Wiz”, “Broke-ology”, “When I Come to Die”, “Family Furniture”, and “The Tutors” among others. Tommy was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor in 2018 and won a Special Tony Award in 2021 for “Freestyle Love Supreme”. They currently teach their workshops at Primary Stages school ESPA. Amelia teaches at Pace University in their FTVC B.F.A. Acting program. What makes Amelia nervous about auditions: Expectations for what good means What is your personal best? Rejection is constant That little voice still shows up "The biggest thing you have to sell is yourself." Humans are messy and flawed, and you have to remember as an actor you have to be that too. Prepping for an audition: First step: Script analysis Start to get a sense of what I'm wearing and hair Shoes can even help Read it and move around You have to think of an audition as your role for the time you are working on it “Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever has.” Learn to apologize less. Tips for Newbie Actors: Pay attention You don't know everything Be interested and curious Want to learn and grow Choose to grow into the best version of yourself What is that? What does that look like? It's ok to be new and it's ok not to say anything. When in doubt leave it out. Listen and absorb.

Fifty Key Stage Musicals: The Podcast

SHOW BOAT COMPOSER: Jerome Kern LYRICIST: Oscar Hammerstein II BOOK: Oscar Hammerstein II SOURCE: Edna Ferber's novel Show Boat (1926) DIRECTOR: Zeke Colvan, Oscar Hammerstein II CHOREOGRAPHER: Sammy Lee PRINCIPLE CAST: Jules Bledsoe (Joe), Howard Marsh (Gaylord), Helen Morgan (Julie) OPENING DATE: Dec 27, 1927 CLOSING DATE: May 04, 1929 PERFORMANCES: 572 SYNOPSIS: Spanning fifty years, a show boat, The Cotton Blossom, goes up and down the Mississippi River, chronicling the lives of the boat's performers, owners, and stagehands. As American society changes, so do the ideologies of those on the Cotton Blossom. Show Boat departed from the standard fare of musical comedies, comic operetta, and vaudeville revues, definitively envisioning a style of musical theatre in which dances, song, and dialogue served a unified dramatic arch. The serious subject matter, dealing with racism and unrequited love, was also a departure from the frivolous subject matter on musical theatre stages, establishing a new genre of musical storytelling. Susan Stroman, the choreographer for the 1994 revival, delves into the impetus behind musicalizing Edna Ferber's novel, the collaboration between Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, Florenz Ziegfeld's concern about the show's success, and the reaction to the story in the 21st Century. Susan Stroman is a five-time Tony Award-winning director and choreographer most known for Crazy For You, Contact, The Scottsboro Boys, and The Producers. Her work has been honored with Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and a record six Astaire Awards. She directed and choreographed The Producers, winner of a record-making 12 Tony Awards including Best Direction and Best Choreography. I'm Nelsie Spencer. I'm a writer, performer, writing teacher/mentor/coach. And a podcaster. I have over 30 years of experience as a writer: I produced a playwright (My Heart Belongs to Daddy), an award-winning screenwriter (Valley Inn), and a published novelist (The Playgroup). My writing career began when I wrote myself a role with my best friend Laury Marker. Our play, My Heart Belongs to Daddy,  premiered at Lucille Lortel's White Barn Theatre in Westport, Ct. And had 3 more sold-out and critically acclaimed productions! Along the way, we worked with producer Dash Epstein and director Morton DeCosta (both Tony-Award winners). Since My Heart Belongs to Daddy, I've written stand-up, become a published novelist (The Playgroup) and worked as a radio talk show host with comics Cory Kahaney and Maureen Langan. Nora Ephron called my first screenplay, A Girl's Best Friend, "a brilliant premise and a wonderful screenplay." When she took the script to Sony and they passed on it, she told them, "You're idiots! Read it again!" God bless you, Nora! In 2015 the award-winning indie film, Valley Inn (co-writer with Kim Swink), was released. My time as a radio talk show host, stand-up comic, and actor made podcasting an easy, fun, and inevitable next step. Last year, I created Losing It! with Nelsie Spencer, life lessons from some of my favorite losers. After taking a few decades off from serious acting, I made my way back to the stage last year when I wrote and performed Day of the Dead Daddy, my solo show. It premiered in NYC at The Chain Studio Theatre. This year, I was honored to be invited to perform my show (via Zoom) at The Marsh Theatre's International Solo Show Festival where Day of the Dead Daddy won an Honorable Mention. I plan to bring the show to Edinburgh for their Fringe Festival next summer. Throughout my unorthodox career path I've met and worked with many interesting and influential people such as super-agent Ari Emanuel, feminist icon Gloria Steinem, and Oscar winners Jane Fonda and Mary Tyler Moore. I've been helping other writers find and hone their stories and their voices since 2006. My current mission: To create community, support, and inspiration for the writer.
