It might only be Wednesday, but this week is absolutely massive for us at Life in the Peloton. It's the week of the Dirty Docker—our inaugural cycling and running festival happening up in my hometown of Lancefield this weekend! With such an exciting event on the horizon, I thought, why not dedicate this entire podcast to the Dirty Docker? This event has been over a year in the making, and I can't wait to share all the details with all of our listeners. Even if you can't make it to Lancefield, whether you're overseas or just tied up, I want you to feel like you're part of the action. We'll be diving deep into what the Dirty Docker is all about. From cross-country running to cyclocross, and of course, our premier event—the Cobawsome Gravel Ride—there's something for everyone. But that's not all. We'll also be exploring each of these disciplines with the experts who helped bring them to life. You'll get to understand the roots of cross-country running, the history of cyclocross, and the unique aspects of our Dirty Docker cyclocross course, including a nod to the iconic Cross Vegas course. Plus, my good mate and the voice of the Dirty Docker, Paul Van Der Ploeg, will join us for a deep dive into the gravel phenomenon—where it's been, where it's going, and what makes it so special. So, whether you're gearing up to join us this weekend or just tuning in from afar, this episode is packed with insights and excitement to get you pumped. I'm really excited for this one, guys.  Give it a listen and get ready for an epic weekend! Cheers, Mitch

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Regulars to the pod might be familiar with the story of Christian Meier the cyclist, the teammate, or the Girona resident and coffee shop owner. But, inspired by organising my first running event - the ‘Pub to Pub' in Lancefield, this instalment Life in the Peloton is all aboutChristian Meier: the ultra-runner. After retiring in 2016 and setting up his Girona coffee shops, Christian hasn't sat still, and instead has found a new athletic passion that has led him to some quite incredible heights! For most ex-pros finishing their career means they wind down and gradually do less sport (or none at all). Christian has broken that mould and found a new love for Ultra-running that in his mind eclipses even his feats as a professional cyclist riding the Tour de France, Giro of Vuelta. I've been loving getting involved with running since I stopped racing, even starting up the Lanny Run Club here in Lancefield. Interestingly in the past few years, we've seen more and more professional cyclists turn to running as part of their training and fitness regimen, even during the race season, something that was unthinkable for a pro rider just a few years ago. Christian was a fascinating guy to talk to on the subject (I ran out of time to get all the tips out of him that I wanted!) but I did get to ask him about what it was like making the transition, what he loves about ultra-running and the similarities and surprising differences between the two endurance sports. We also went over his incredible win in the TDS, an ultra-running race of 145km that takes in over 9000m of climbing in the Alps. I'll leave you guys to have a listen to hear what the man himself has to say about that! Cheers! Mitch ----more---- The Dirty Docker is almost here! This is a short excerpt from the longer episode. To listen to the whole thing and future episodes become a member of The Pelo.  For our second subscriber special, in this episode of Life in the Peloton's Chronicles, Sveino and I take a deep dive into the hot topic of sauna life.  Saunas were something that both of us got into at a young age and also found ourselves getting into during our racing careers, and since then (but not because of us!) more and more people are being drawn to the many benefits of a good sweat followed by a duck into some freezing water.  Even though we both knew that saunas were ‘good', we weren't ever really aware of why or how. This episode of Chronicles allows us to get stuck in to a really interesting topic that could have a benefit for every single cyclist out there.  To kick things off, Sveino has gone native and talks to his good friend, and former racing buddy, Marsh Cooper about the culture of the sauna. Marsh is Canadian by birth but now lives in Finland where the sauna is as much a part of life as the pub is in Australia! He explains the many social functions of the sauna and how its use as part of daily life benefits millions of Finns every year.  Going deeper into the potential benefits for athletes, I then spoke to EF Easypost's Director of Sports Science Dr Kevin Sprouse. I asked him exactly what is happening in the body when you take a sauna and how this can help an athlete. I found this whole conversation fascinating. We discussed the how's and why's as well as the best way to implement using a sauna to benefit your own performance.  Finally, staying local, I spoke to a neighbour of mine here in Lancefield, John Simpson the owner of Hello Sauna who actually builds saunas! I got to sit down (and have a sweat) while we talked about how they are constructed, the best wood to use to build them, and the actual process of making a sauna.  ‘Sauna life' as Sveino and I have often called it, is a fast developing culture in the UK and Australia, going hand in hand with wild swimming and other healthy and simple pursuits that not just sportsmen but also the general public are getting the benefits from.  So, whether you fancy working a bit of sauna action to your training program, if you are already on it and you want to know exactly what benefits it can have, or even if you are already on the verge of getting your own one built, then I think there is something in this pod for everyone.  Sit back, chuck a bucket of water (or beer) on the coals, and enjoy!  Cheers! Mitch

Rapha presents Life in the Peloton! Well, here we are, it's the last pod of the year and I've got a bumper one for you! As you'll know the UCI World Road Race Championships were held in Australia this year, and I made the 1,250km trip from my home in Lancefield, near Melbourne, to the race in Wollongong by bike, and I documented the trip for the pod.  I gave myself five days for the trip, which meant I was doing big days on the bike, but without any ridiculous pressure, and it turned out to be an amazing pilgrimage through my own backyard here in Australia.   Australia is a huge country that I've been away from for my whole career. I'd never ridden this route before, so I based my plans around staying and visiting some well-known pub stops and trying to catch up with other cyclists and friends, and anyone else I could find to have a cleansing ale and a chin wag with along the way.  Sure, the riding got hard at times, but it really was an incredible experience to meet so many people, soak up the culture, and discover communities in Australia that I've never had the chance to meet before.  I've got so many of these amazing characters on the pod, from keen cyclists to landlords wondering what the mad guy in pink lycra was doing in their pub! I spoke to locals who were bike racers, and to locals who had no idea what the Cycling World Championships were, let alone who Wout Van Aert was. Overall it was an amazing experience. I had a blast in Australia, and I learned a lot about local cycling cultures and everything else along the way. I loved the time on the bike, both alone and with the company I picked up on the route, and I hope that comes across in the pod.  I also hope that it can even inspire you guys to go and plan a trip yourselves. Remember, it doesn't need to be epic or for the fastest known time, it can be whatever you want; just get out there and do your own fun trips; have fun on the bike, visit some pubs (of course), meet great people and get out and ride! I want to say a big thanks to everyone who met me out on the road, gave me a tow, a beer or stopped to chat. Thanks to Tim, Gene, Pykey, Neil, Tom, Jordan, Chris and Stu, Tas, Ryan, Avie, Matilda, Lila and Lou, Kelly, Tom, Hans & Malia, Ben, Jay & Randy, Greg, Jamie, Murray, Shane, Kev & Erin, Gavin, Sam & Talia, Dave, Dan, Chris, Kirk, Tom, Sinna, Frano & the whole Rapha Cycle Club peloton. It was commissioned by the production company behind Channel 4's coverage of the Tour de France in the 1980s and was used as the theme music for the nightly highlights show. I grew up watching those highlights and the music became part of my childhood. When I set out to create Life in the Peloton I knew that theme song was what would set the scene and capture the essence of Life in the Peloton. Pete died in December 2018. Rapha presents Life in the Peloton! Lael Wilcox is an American Ultra-distance cyclist and one of the absolute legends of the discipline. She is the record holder for some of the sport's most famous races, such as the 2,475 mile Tour Divide and the 4,400 mile Trans Am Bike Race (If you don't fancy the math – that's roughly 4000km and 7000km!) - and that's against both men and women.  ... Ultra-distance racing is an intriguing and new side of cycling that I have only started to discover in the last couple of years. Lael was the perfect person to explain and dive into the interesting intricacies of this kind of racing. I had a great laugh at the stories from Lael's many adventures and we went into the details of how she manages her equipment, her preparation, and even what she prefers to listen to on those long nights alone on the bike. She explained perfectly how the sport works, and the key differences between the types of events, either supported or self-supported.  I also wanted to know what makes Lael, and so many other women excel at Ultra-distance races. It was really interesting to hear her take on why women are so competitive and to hear her recount her excitement when she first started overtaking the men (passing them while they slept in hotels on the route, and then sleeping under a hedge for two hours to drop them all the next morning!) This chat also came at a great time for me, as I was in my final preparations for my own long-distance adventure riding 1,250km from my home in Lancefield, just outside of Melbourne, to the Road World Championships in Wollongong in five days. In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger (facilitator and retired naturopath with 30+ years of practice) speaks with Dr. John Coleman, ND from Return To Stillness; Naturopathy & Bowen Therapy. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/dr-john-coleman-nd       Highlights from today's episode include: Dr. John Coleman, ND   21:57 And healthcare was self-help and family help and community help with all that support around them with wisdom from people who didn't necessarily go to college but had the life history and background and experience to say this is what worked.   Dr. John Coleman, ND I go back to saying, yes, all these things, these diseases were caused by the same processes. They're just a set of symptoms. And so, to change my health, I need to change the processes and I need to change my attitude. Me. I have to do it, not someone in a white coat with a bottle of pills, although they can be useful. But I have to make the changes   Dr. John Coleman, ND But what people's choices are, are their choice. So, it's fine. And many people we know, are very lazy, they don't want to do research. They don't want to know; they don't want to find out. They want to be told what to do. That's fine. That's their choice.   ABOUT DR. JOHN COLEMAN, ND  By August 1995, Dr. John Coleman, ND   was wondering how he could go on living.  Suffering symptoms of stage IV Parkinson's disease and early-stage Multi-system Atrophy, diagnosed by five medical and complementary practitioners, and severely dissatisfied with the treatment and prognosis he received from western medical practitioners, John decided to pursue other pathways to health and was completely symptom-free by April 1998. John was co-founder of Very Special Kids in 1984 and founder of the neuro recovery foundation in 2002, conducted sixteen Neuro Recovery Pathways programs in NSW and Melbourne, plus practitioner training around Australia, USA, Germany, Austria and UK. John is one of Australia's most experienced naturopaths in treating Neurodegenerative and Autoimmune disorders, plus Lyme disease and co-infections, utilizing a wide variety of strategies to improve health together with specific neuroregenerative strategies plus antimicrobial & detox herbal remedies as required. John now conducts his Naturopathic Clinic in Lancefield, rural Victoria.  His book, “Rethinking Parkinson's Disease – the definitive guide to the known causes of Parkinson's disease and proven reversal strategies”, was released by Hybrid Publishers in 2020. “Shaky Past” autobiography  was released in 2012. He presented at the International Parkinson's Disease Conference in 2001, two posters at the 1st Tick Borne Diseases Conference in 2013 and two case histories at the 3rd Tick Borne Diseases Conference in 2015. John received a Tattersall's Award for work with VSK in 1985 and an ANPA award for Community Education in 2005. He was a finalist in the Pride of Australia Medal in 2007. Welcome to episode 49  of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week's  guest is Pam Ahern, Founder of Edgar's Mission in Lancefield, Victoria, Australia. Pam shares her incredible journey from packing lolli's ,as she calls them in a factory, and being a champion equestrian, to providing shelter and direct care for homeless, abused, injured and abandoned farm animals. You will quickly learn that kindness is at the heart of everything Pam does. When a little pig named Edgar Alan came into Pam's life it brought her down a path she never imagined. This is truly an incredible story and one that even involves the actor, James Cromwell, from the hit movie “Babe”.  Pam gave up her full-time job, hung up her riding boots, and dedicated her life to the protection of farm animals. Why, you may ask? Well you will need to listen in to hear why Pam built the 153 acre sanctuary that is currently caring for 500 farm animal residents. Every animal that comes through the sanctuary doors is given a special name, treated as an individual, and surrounded by so much love. Many that arrive are in need of immediate and very special care. The one thing that is truly amazing is how some of the animals support their counterparts who are in need of that additional help and support. You will hear about Vet Nurses Ruby the dog and Tabitha the cat.  You will fall in love with Calvin Swine, Mr. Invisible, Captain Kirk the Rooster, Smudge, and so many more as you watch them through their videos via FB and Instagram. Visit the Today is the Day YouTube Channel to see pictures of these special animals and Edgar's Mission.  Pam is also the proud Australian ambassador for World Animal Day and was a 2014 Victorian Local Hero Finalist in the Australian of the Year Awards. On top of all of that she is also the author of the book, 'The Gift of Kindness – True Stories of Rescue Farm Animals'. She shares an incredible mantra, "If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others, why wouldn't we?" Listen in to hear Pam's incredible answer to, 'if I knew then, what I know now'.  Pam is the only one in all 49 episodes with this answer!Next week my guest is John Belizaire. John is the CEO of Soluna. John is a serial entrepreneur that has taken companies truly to the next level.
