Join us for an enlightening conversation with Matthew, a sixth-generation farmer and rancher from Waller County, Texas, who shares his family's agricultural journey that began in 1847. We discuss Matthew's diverse operations, including horse-quality square bale production and cattle grazing, and the invaluable support of his family, particularly his sisters. Matthew's educational background in animal science from Texas A&M initially led him to a career in preconditioning and input sales, but a transformative encounter with horse trainer Martin Black inspired him to adopt regenerative grazing practices.Listen in as we explore the challenges and successes Matthew experienced while transitioning his family ranch to regenerative agriculture. From the initial complexities and costs of traditional fencing to the revolutionary use of electric fencing, Matthew's journey highlights the influence of industry experts and the importance of adaptive management strategies. Key changes, such as shifting the calving season and embracing principles of stockmanship, have significantly enhanced cattle management and ranch productivity.Discover the benefits of low-input system livestock management, including the integration of heat-tolerant breeds and the strategic use of apple cider vinegar to improve digestion during winter grazing. Matthew shares his insights on custom grazing, weed utilization, and the importance of consistent grazing plans. Wrapping up, we discuss practical tools and resources that have supported Matthew's journey, offering valuable takeaways for anyone interested in regenerative grazing practices.Links Mentioned in the Episode:Menke Farm and Ranch IncVisit our Sponsors:Noble Research InstituteKencove Farm Fence

Christine has had a long career in regenerative agriculture—she's worked on farms in Japan and New Zealand, has degrees from Stanford in agribusiness and land use, and most notably, is the founder and former CEO of PastureMap, a tech company that helps ranchers connect with their land and track their grazing patterns. In her first interview since selling PastureMap, Christine shares with us her excitement at embracing her activist side now that she's not representing a company. We talk about the founder burnout she experienced and how she's pivoted over time to find a place in regenerative agriculture that fits her identity. Our conversation spans her Evangelical upbringing, New Zealand's wide acceptance of reparations for Maori people, and how to make regenerative ag more accessible. In this episode of the podcast, we talk with David LeZaks, a senior fellow at the Croatan Institute, about his work in regenerative agriculture finance. Croatan Institute is an independent, nonprofit research institute whose mission is to harness the power of investment for social good and ecological resilience by working at the critical nexus where sustainability, finance, and economic development intersect.   Fortunately, some investors are taking a more altruistic approach to how they invest their cash. Sometimes referred to as impact investment, more and more investors are only investing money where the project matches a specific set of goals or values like environmental rehabilitation or local food.   A new regenerative ag-dedicated venture capital investment firm called Soilworks recently launched and acquired grazing management software service PastureMap as its first investment, for example.  David talks about some of his recent work identifying barriers for small and medium-scale livestock producers due to Covid-19 in an effort to identify key pain points where investment is needed. He was also involved in producing the Soil Wealth report, which surveyed the landscape to identify existing investment vehicles for regenerative agriculture and opportunities to expand them.   This episode is brought to you by Blue Nest Beef. There's a lot of choices for "better" beef out there and the folks at Blue Nest Beef are grassfed pioneers who've perfected all the steps it takes to make better beef even better. Not only is their beef delicious, but it comes exclusively from American ranchers who have been certified by the National Audubon Society as ranchers who are regenerating our land and bird habitats. Initiatives designed to reverse climate change generally lack funding. Yet there are investors with large pools of money who are increasingly interested in the space. How do we bridge that gap and promote impact investing? How do we support regenerative agriculture projects that will restore the soil and reduce the amount of carbon in our atmosphere? David Hodgson enjoyed a successful career as a software engineer, working at prominent companies the likes of Microsoft and Sony Pictures. But when his father was diagnosed with cancer, David did some soul searching and made the decision to shift his focus to a field where he could make a greater impact. He earned an MBA in Sustainable Business from Dominican University of California in 2007, and he has spent the last ten years working to fast-track the world-changing initiatives necessary to address the profound challenges of our time. He currently serves as the CEO of Hummingbird Labs, a venture dedicated to supporting systems focused on regenerating nature. David is passionate about accelerating the flow of capital to solve for climate change.  Today, David joins Ross and Christophe to discuss the concepts of impact investing and blended finance and the significance of monetizing ecosystem service production. David shares his mission around accelerating the flow of capital to planetary regeneration, explaining the roadblocks he faces and how projects like 1000 Landscapes are working to overcome those challenges. They talk regulations, speaking to the strong interest in regenerative agriculture shown by governments around the globe. David covers the difference between sustainability and regeneration and explains why he is more optimistic about the future of regenerative agriculture than he was five years ago. In the business of ranching—one that has not changed much in the past 100 years—PastureMap is a true breakthrough, and Christine’s innovative mindset and infectious enthusiasm are two of the root drivers of the company’s success. • Christine grew up in an entrepreneurial family, and she has had a lifelong curiosity about agriculture and the importance of food production. After building an impressive resume that includes undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford, a stint at McKinsey & Company, and experience in private equity, Christine combined her business expertise with her passion for agriculture to form PastureMap. PastureMap makes active or holistic management a more realistic option for ranchers, creating ripple effects far beyond the ranchers’ bottom lines—healthier grass, increased biodiversity, stronger communities, and continued viable domestic food production. • As you’ll hear in our conversation, Christine is a truly dynamic person whose passion for agriculture is matched by her intellect and entrepreneurial acumen. We cover all the details of PastureMap and how she built the business from a simple idea to a successful enterprise. We discuss her personal background and why she initially became so curious about agriculture around the world. We also chat about the ins and outs of active ranch management, and how a holistic approach to grazing can have far-reaching benefits beyond agriculture. Grasslands and grazing cattle go hand in hand. Yet, grazing cattle can be a complex process with things like dynamic business practices, the ecology of the grasses, and the biology of the animal all needing to be considered. Grass-fed beef and other grass-fed agricultural products are also fueling the modern-day demand for pastures and grazing opportunities. I recently came across a business that is trying to solve issues associated with pasture management and cattle grazing. Christine Su is the co-founder and CEO of PastureMap, a platform that collects data on different areas that are being used for grazing.
