Digital surveillance is becoming increasingly threatening to the reproductive rights of women and pregnant people in America after the fall of Roe v. Wade. Behavioral data collected from apps can be used to catalog — and criminalize — our health care choices. In this “wild west” surveillance economy, who is responsible for safeguarding our privacy? Could more and more of our data be weaponized against us in this same way? How can technology be harnessed to help protect privacy, rather than further jeopardize it? Host Raffi Krikorian talks to people working to protect reproductive freedom in an ever-changing landscape. Guests include Sue Dunlap, the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles; Melanie Fontes Rainer, Director of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office for Civil Rights; Kevin Williams, VP of digital products at Planned Parenthood; Amy Merrill, digital director and co-founder of Plan C; and Congressman Ted Lieu (D-CA). The Supreme Court today overturned the nationwide right to an abortion. Congressman Adam Schiff says the court's opinion could lead to other rights being taken away. Law professor Jessica Levinson says in the short term, the feds could cut regulations on abortion pills. KCRW also hears from David Turok, one of the few doctors who perform abortions in Utah, and Sue Dunlap, head of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. How are they mobilizing now? Meanwhile, anti-abortion activists say the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade is an opportunity to support both mothers and babies. All this is likely to impact the midterm elections. Democrats know they have a political advantage since voters, by a large margin, want abortion to be legal, says Sahil Kapur of NBC News.
Roe v. Wade is in jeopardy. This week Politico published a draft Supreme Court decision that, if issued, would overturn the landmark abortion ruling Roe v Wade. It would immediately ban or restrict access to abortion for people in about half the states. What are abortion rights advocates doing to prepare? In California, they are preparing to create an abortion sanctuary state open to people from across the country. On this week's episode of the News Not Noise Podcast, we speak with Planned Parenthood Los Angeles' Sue Dunlap, who discusses the steps her clinic is taking to ensure people in other states can travel to Los Angeles to seek abortion there, at no cost to them. She also discusses the impact this decision could have on businesses, the training of medical students, and other rights we take for granted.Dunlap is the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. This week John Erickson, local West Hollywood resident with life-long activism and advocacy from an early age joins We Know Weho to discuss his (first-time) candidacy run for a seat on the West Hollywood City Council. Erickson first planted roots in West Hollywood in 2010. While completing his Ph.D. at Claremont Graduate University in American Religious History, he was selected as an intern for the West Hollywood City Council and moved into the city. The internship set him on a path to connect decades of work for social and economic justice with his passion for public service. After the internship, Erickson went on to become Council Deputy to former Councilmember Abbe Land and then the City's Community Affairs Technician where he worked directly with West Hollywood residents, civic leaders, and organizations across Southern California. At City Hall, Erickson advanced policies and programs to increase awareness around LGBTQ+ rights, women's rights, the environment, and civic engagement. While at City Hall, served as the President of West Hollywood Municipal Employees (WEHOME) American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local Union No. 3339, AFL-CIO. He learned to bring residents and local businesses together so that City Hall works for everyone, to take forward-thinking policies from white paper to law, and to provide exceptional constituent services. Currently, Erickson is the Director of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, a Planning Commissioner for the City of West Hollywood, and President of the Board for the ACLU of Southern California.
