The Well Mind is a space for meaningful conversations about a broad range of wellness related topics and this episode is a beautiful example of that mission. I'm your host Dr. Ben Kohls. I've been a practicing clinical mental health counselor for over 15 years and am currently a counselor educator and director for the CMHC graduate program at Bethany Lutheran College. My guest for this episode is Elizabeth DeBolt. She is a professor and researcher from Liberty University and has truly invested herself in the topic of maternal mental health for a number of years now. The knowledge and compassion that Elizabeth has for this topic is truly outstanding. She has presented on this topic multiple times at national conferences and I feel really blessed to share her with the Well Mind community. Pregnancy and birth are life altering experiences that bring change to roles, responsibilities, identity, and relationships. There is, what I perceive to be, a good amount of focus on mom and baby from a physical health basis and preparing for the arrival of the baby, but less attention is given to the shifts in identity and the impacts this experience has on emotional wellbeing. If you are thinking that maternal mental health is a ‘just for moms' episode, I'm going to ask you to suspend that perspective and listen in, because this episode is for everyone. Moms, Dads, those planning for and hoping to be parents in the future, anyone that knows and cares about a mom or dad, and certainly all those in the church community that desire to support parents. Please join me in welcoming Elizabeth DeBolt in Episode 38: Maternal Mental Health. One aspect of postpartum depression and anxiety that doesn’t get much attention is the rage that comes along with these issues. People who experience this rage can feel overwhelmed and confused, and it can be a scary scenario. Today’s guest shares her story of how she came through postpartum depression, anxiety, and rage, and how she uses her healing process to help other moms today. Jen Gaskell is a quality professional who works full-time outside the home. She and her husband live near Milwaukee with their two daughters, ages 8 and 11. Jen used her writing and her blog to help navigate her journey through postpartum depression and anxiety. She was a former co-producer of Listen To Your Mother Milwaukee, where she was part of the inaugural Milwaukee cast telling her story of PPD. Jen has written for Postpartum Progress and was a member of their editorial team for three years. Jen was a Climb Out of the Darkness team leader for Milwaukee for four years. She helps lead a Facebook group of local moms who’ve been through postpartum mood disorders and recently became a PSI helpline volunteer. Show Highlights: How Jen struggled with postpartum depression and anxiety following the birth of her youngest child When she didn’t know who or where to turn to, she turned to Google to research her symptoms How she knew she needed to see someone but was afraid of having her kids taken away How Jen found a therapist and was able to get help quickly The signs in the beginning that told Jen that something was wrong The pressure Jen put on herself because of gestational diabetes and the details of managing the risks How her anxiety turned to irritability during her pregnancy and then spiraled into rage in the postpartum The feelings of irritability and rage that Jen noticed The key indicators that something was wrong How Jen learned about her triggers and when to take a break The guilt Jen felt for needing a break from her kids The internal pressure to be “on top of things” all the time How Jen learned to cope, especially journaling and learning to give herself grace How hard struggling moms work not to let others know the truth of how they feel How Jen became comfortable in sharing her story to help others The importance of normalizing the therapy process and the steps to get better Jen’s hopeful message to other moms: “It’s not you. Those negative thoughts are not who you are. There is so much support available, so reach out. This is a common condition, and it’s treatable. It won’t be like this forever.” Resources: Tranquila Mama Twitter and Instagram: @jenrenpody Facebook: Tranquila Mama Blog Listen To Your Mother on YouTube

There is a free section but there are also in-app purchases opportunities. If money is an issue there are accessible meditation resources, The UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness has a number of mindfulness stress reduction audio files on a variety of topic. Postpartum Psychosis, while rare, is very serious. 1-2 in 1,000 new mothers experience this and most have no idea what is going on. Kristina Dulaney shares her story and her journey through recovery. The recovery process can be long. Kristina tells us about the length of her recovery and what she did to get back to herself. This is another important highlight of why we HAVE to educate mothers, families, healthcare providers and whoever will listen. Prevention and early intervention are NECESSARY! Some of her story highlights why we HAVE to have more specialized units for postpartum mothers and very specifically for postpartum psychosis. We have to understand this experience, treat these mothers well, with respect and with dignity. Then we have to educate everyone, get more resources that will actually help, rather than just contain them. She describes how the support of her husband, family and faith really helped her to get to feeling better. Kristina is working to reduce stigma and increase awareness, gather resources for her community in Tennessee. She is looking into the future to make sure resources are available for moms and families going forward. Her message and hope for moms: reach out and get help. Her postpartum crisis occurred May 22,2015 when her youngest was 5 1/2 months old and they lived just outside of Greensboro at the time. Postpartum depression is a rabbit hole many women face. In fact, 600,000 women in the US will suffer from PPD. It's not just the women we need to worry about. It's the children, thousands of them, who are at risk. PPD affects children’s development and puts them at a higher risk of future psychiatric illness.  In fact, maternal depression during infancy has a bigger impact on a child’s development than later exposure to maternal mental illness (Essex 2001, Moehler 2006, postpartumprogress, 2016). Stephanie Trzyna is a 36-year-old mother to one who has struggled with depression, anxiety and borderline OCD since age 14. After the birth of her daughter in 2006, she fell victim to Severe Postpartum Depression and Anxiety which ultimately led to her first hospitalization.  With the strength of her husband, parents and her daughter, she has survived six bouts of major depression and has become a huge advocate for mental illness and maternal mental illness.  She serves as a Climb Co-Leader for her local Climb Out Of The Darkness for Postpartum Progress and is a Warrior Mom Ambassador. Currently, she recovering from her 6th episode of Major Depressive Disorder.  You can find her as a frequent contributor to The Mighty and Stigma Fighters.  She also runs an active blog at spaigewrites.com where she discusses her over twenty years of struggling with mental illness.

I really hope this podcast goes viral. The irony would be too much!  That's because my guest is viral video vixen, writer, and mom Morgan Shanahan. Morgan is a Senior Editor for Buzzfeed and has her finger on the pulse of the internet. She stays on top of everything happening in the parenting world including funny videos, celeb news and topical parent-themed listicles because it's her job.  She's also an award-winning screenwriter and a director. Is there anything she can't do? Probably. But we didn't talk about that in this episode. We did talk about how I'm jealous of the Chewbacca mom, but not because of her fascination with Chewie. It's because she played the public like a fiddle. We also squeeze in some celeb talk about Ryan Reynolds.  Apparently he really is that nice! And she hints at a story about another celebrity involving a hamster and her car. But I've been sworn to secrecy. Sorry suckers! The most compelling part of my interview with Morgan was her honesty about dealing with postpartum depression. It's incredible that she's been through so much in the last several years, yet managed to build a hugely successful blog called the818.com, make millions of people laugh through Buzzfeed, and become an advocate for other women suffering from PPD. You have to hear her very moving story for yourself. If you or someone you know is suffering from postpartum depression and want them to know they're not alone, share this episode with them. It won't fix the situation, but it could help them to know they're not alone. You can also tell them about the charity Morgan is working with called Postpartum Progress. She's involved in a fundraiser to raise awareness and funds to help other women struggling through the complicated and devastating heartbreak of postpartum. Show Summary We’re in the process of changing our lives and we have the audacity to do it publicly as podcast series. We’ve been using Essentialism by Greg McKeown as a loose guide. One of the main tenets of the book is that we have to exercise our power of choice. Last week, Laura chose to quit her day job as full-time homemaker. This week we’re bringing clarity to what that actually means and how we can start supporting her in that transition. Our first step is simply making a list of what her job as a homemaker was and then also creating a list of things she chooses to keep doing. It was a lot harder than it sounds because what we do gets so mixed up with who we are. Then you throw depression into the mix and the difficulty hits ten. Biz and Theresa fall back on “making jokes” as our defense mechanism while we tackle the topic of Postpartum Depression, the way the media portrays it, and our own experiences with the ups, downs and way-downs of post-baby life. We then speak with Katherine Stone, founder of Postpartum Progress, who helps us understand postpartum depression and other mental illnesses related to pregnancy and childbirth, including postpartum anxiety, postpartum OCD, depression during pregnancy, and more.
