The art market is one of the least regulated, most opaque wealth transfer systems on the planet. We're talking billions of dollars moving between billionaires, oligarchs, and heads of state — with almost no oversight. It's where old money hides, new money launders, and powerful families build dynasties that last for generations. And at the center of all of it? Almost always, a man.But behind that man? Almost always, a woman who did the work — and got written out. That's the world at the heart of The Parisian Heist, the new novel from my guest today — and it is juicy. We're talking rich people behaving very badly, the hidden female genius behind one of the most famous artists who ever lived, and what all of it has to do with your money, your financial agency, and why handing over control — even to someone you love and trust — can cost you everything.Jo Piazza is a bestselling author, journalist, and podcast host with fourteen books and 25 million downloads to her nameLearn more about Farnoosh's upcoming literary workshop Book to Brand. What makes readers gasp out loud at the end of a thriller? How do authors plant clues without giving everything away? And why do some plot twists stay with us forever?  This week on Book Lounge, Joe is joined by three powerhouse thriller writers — Clare Mackintosh, Jo Piazza, and Lisa Gardner — for an exciting conversation all about The Anatomy of a Twist. In this snack-sized episode of Parenting is a Joke, Ophira Eisenberg is joined once again by author and podcast host Jo Piazza for a conversation that hits on the real logistics of being a working parent with no time for “manifesting” or gentle parenting platitudes. Jo explains how her background as a tabloid journalist trained her to write anywhere—including from the toilet while hiding from her kids—and how that skill helped her crank out her latest novel, Everyone Is Lying to You, in just three months. They talk about what it actually takes to get creative work done while raising kids (hint: discipline, childcare, and no scrolling), and how Jo structures her mornings around laser-focused word counts. She shares what it was like traveling through Sicily with a 5-month-old while researching a real-life family murder, and why her new dream is a European river cruise where no one has to pack and repack. The two also compare cultural attitudes toward parenting, with Jo recalling how an Italian stranger followed her into a bathroom just to offer her a pillow and a glass of wine. And when it comes to American parenting, Jo offers the most honest take of all: she doesn't gentle parent—because her kids aren't gentle.

On this episode of Parenting is a Joke, Ophira Eisenberg talks with bestselling author and Under the Influence podcast host Jo Piazza about parenting three young kids while juggling a prolific writing career. Jo shares the moment she realized she was pregnant (it involved an Elton John concert and tequila), why she can't stand chickens, and how her latest thriller Everyone Is Lying to You takes aim at the surreal and insidious world of mom influencers. She opens up about trying to become an influencer herself—complete with a hired photographer, reluctant kids, and affiliate links for water shoes from the school giveaway bin—only to discover that she hated every minute of it. Jo and Ophira get into what postpartum really looks like and how mom influencers perpetuate impossible standards while profiting off our insecurities. They talk about breaking up with Cocomelon, teaching their kids media literacy, and raising children in a house where canceling plans is considered an act of love. Jo also reflects on the burnout of the girlboss era, the fantasy of the tradwife lifestyle, and why the influencer economy is both a trap and a lifeline for modern moms. Her happiest child eats like a roaming dog, and honestly, that might be the parenting win of the year.

In this sharp and thought-provoking conversation, Jo Piazza dives into her new novel, Everyone Is Lying To You, a bold takedown of the tradwife trend and toxic influencer culture. She unpacks the power of storytelling as a tool for cultural critique, challenging the curated, unrealistic portrayals of women's lives online. The episode explores themes of agency, gender roles, and the societal pressures women navigate daily—while showcasing how fiction can reveal deeper truths about our world. What We're Talking About... Jo Piazza identifies as a storyteller, not a content creator. The tradwife phenomenon often masks the loss of women's agency. Influencer culture presents an unrealistic lifestyle that many aspire to. Women are experiencing burnout from the pressures of girl boss culture. The left struggles with branding and losing the culture wars. It's possible to have it all, but it requires systemic support. Fiction can serve as a powerful tool for cultural critique. Research into tradwives reveals a deeper cultural trend. Influencers often rent spaces to create idealized content. The reality of motherhood and work is often misrepresented in media. Jo shares highlights from her new book, Everyone Is Lying to You, which dives deep into the curated illusions of influencer culture and the pressure it places on modern moms. Together, they explore how over-parenting, performative authenticity, and the fine line between privacy and public life are shaping today's parenting experience. The conversation also takes a refreshing turn toward the importance of rest and reclaiming the right to “do nothing” as a form of radical self-care. Jo and Tara discuss how empowerment doesn't have to mean rejecting traditional roles—it's about choice and agency. They're creating a magazine; they're creating a TV show. Most of this is not their real life. When you look at it like it's actually media and not a glimpse into someone's window, I think then you can let go of some of the guilt and the shame, but you're still going to buy the shit." - Jo Piazza [10:40]"The funniest thing about trad wives is they're encouraging all of these women to quit their jobs and rely on a man. I'm like, where are all these rich men that just want to make enough money to support a family? The average male income is something around $60,000 and the average American household spends $70,000. So the math does not add up in this equation." - Jo Piazza [19:12]"You can now rent entire houses for your influencer content. You can rent out a house with the beautiful kitchen and the pristine countertops. You can even rent a bathroom that's beautiful for your get-ready-with-me routine. And then [you can] shoot all of your content in it for one day. It's not your actual freaking house, but no one knows that." - Jo Piazza [13:31]"We're all brands. We're all trying to create something online. I'm very honest about this. I want people to buy my damn books. And so that means I have to post on social media." - Jo Piazza [26:35]Associated Links:Order Everyone Is Lying to You by Jo PiazzaCheck out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? In this episode, I speak to Jo Piazza, bestselling author of The Sicilian Inheritance, podcaster, and award-winning journalist. We discuss tradwives and its financial and social implications.  Given that Financial Samurai is about achieving financial freedom sooner, being financially dependent on someone as an adult is the exact opposite of what I want for readers. A tradwife typically denotes a woman who believes in and practices traditional gender roles and marriages. Some may choose to take on a homemaking role within their marriage or leave their careers to focus on meeting their family's needs at home. According to Google Trends, online searches for the term "tradwife" began to rise in popularity around mid-2018 and reached high levels during the early 2020s. Money touches everything in our lives. And for women, who have long been documented to earn less than men, save less than men, and invest less than men, the stereotype is often that we're doing money “wrong.”  But it's getting old. We know that statistically, women are better investors than men are, we fare better during times of recession, and we're often more thoughtful about our budgets. Yet the stereotypes persist: the “girl math” trend of recent years tried to insinuate that we're messy and unreliable with numbers, and countless female characters in pop culture (those in Fleabag, Sex and the City, and Girls, to name a few) just can't seem to get their finances together, no matter how hard they try.  We say enough is enough. And we aren't the only ones. Jo Piazza feels the same way — which is exactly why she flipped the script for the main character in her new novel The Sicilian Inheritance. Listen in to hear her story.  In Mailbag, we hear from a listener whose 18-year-old son is looking for the best ways to start to build credit, and we hear from a woman who is about to have her first baby and is being pressured by friends to make big (and expensive!) life changes.  Chapters:  00:00:00: Introduction  00:06:32: Portrayal of women in finance and media 00:10:03: Strategies for managing work and family life 00:21:22: Managing the impact of social media 00:25:40: Transition to mailbag segment 00:26:01: Financial advice for young adults and credit cards 00:30:20: Lifestyle changes after having a baby Takeaways:  Women are often portrayed as messy and unreliable in finance and media, perpetuating stereotypes that can be damaging and untrue. The influencer culture on social media can create an expectation gap between real life and the curated images and lifestyles portrayed online. Financial influencers should be approached with caution, as not all advice and recommendations may be reliable or suitable for individual situations. There is a need for better regulation and transparency in the influencer industry to protect consumers and ensure ethical practices. More money news when you need it!
