After a shaky start to the season, things FINALLY seem to be falling into place. The Scoobs are hanging at the Bronze, Joyce and Buffy are bonding over bullying Principal Snyder, and Buffy might even have a new love interest?! (Willow will MAKE THAT SHIT HAPPEN even if it kills her!) But wait! We know good things in this town don't last long, and Sunnydale has some new residents that are sure to cause some chaos. While we might think Kakistos and Mr. Trick are Big Bad material, we're pretty sure Buffy would give that title to Faith, the newest vampire slayer in town (yes there's ANOTHER one, RIP Kendra). Is there room in Sunnydale for two slayers?! History tells us no (RIP Kendra x2), but go rewatch and tell us what you think!New episodes come out every Monday or you can listen early on Amazon Music or early and ad-free by subscribing to Wondery Plus in Apple Podcasts or the Wondery App.Please support us by supporting our sponsors.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Rewatcher: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy is back from New Angeles (IYKYK) ready to get her life back on track, but everyone is acting weird, and not in the usual Sunnydale kind of way. Joyce is trying way too hard with Buffy, while Giles, Willow, and Xander are treating her like she has the plague, (no doubt from Joyce's shitty comments from last week's episode. #BadChoiceJoyce). Joyce tries to get Buffy back to school, but of course Principal Snyder is putting up a fight and getting all tingly in the process (EW! Get a room you gross little man!). The Scoobs attempt to bury their resentment of Buffy's time in #NewAngeles by throwing a “Welcome Back Bash” chock full of both ‘Hoot' and a dash of ‘Nanny'.In what may be one of the most disastrous house parties ever, Buffy feels not so welcome at her ‘Welcome Home Hootenanny!” The Scoobs are forced to confront more than just the buried elephant in the room when Joyce's unfortunate home decor starts literally raising the dead and drawing hordes of zombies. Whose mask brings all the zombies to the yard? Thieving Joyce!!! That's who!!Rewatch, Listen and laugh with us as we get an episode full of misery-concealing quippy one liners, the origin moment for #goodChoiceJoyce, and a #RipperFIREemoji moment that left Alaina on the floor… Literally! And don't forget to follow us on Instagram at @the_rewatcher for Special Bonus Content!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Rewatcher: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

What is going on with the Sunnydale Swim team!? Last week they had jicama breath and we didn't even know they existed, and now they're walking the halls like they own the damn place? Sure, they won the State Semi-Finals and apparently don't actually have to EARN their computer grades (much to Willow and Xander's dismay), but it definitely seems that something more than winning is getting to their heads. Much to everyone's dismay, Principal Snyder is back, commiserating with the equally awful Coach Carl, and the two of them will go to ANY length to win State… even if that means turning the swim team into slimy, creepy, Gill Monsters. Per usual, it's up to the Scoobs to save the day! Will the gang figure out how to defeat The Sea Man? Who summoned him in the first place? And why the hell are they so good at Synchronized Swimming? Maybe they'll still win a State Championship after all! So dive in to rewatch, listen, and laugh with us this week on The Rewatcher! And don't forget to follow us on Instagram at the_rewatcher for special content!!New episodes come out every Monday or you can listen early on Amazon Music or early and ad-free by subscribing to Wondery Plus in Apple Podcasts or the Wondery App.Please support us by supporting our sponsors.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Tabula Rasa, B!tches!: A Buffy Rewatch Show

Principal Snyder has sentenced Buffy, on pain of expulsion, to set up the upcoming Parent/Teacher Night. Meanwhile, two new vampires have moved into Sunnydale - a cheerfully homicidal maniac named Spike and his spacey girlfriend, Drusilla. They tell the Anointed One they'll ‘take care' of his Slayer problem. Buffy tries to keep her mom from meeting Principal Snyder at Parent/Teacher Night, but the two do meet, and Principal Snyder apparently does not have nice things to say about Buffy. Suddenly, Spike and his goons burst through a window. Buffy and the Scoobies, aided by Angel and Ms. Calendar, defend the school while the parents and teachers hide. Buffy faces off against Spike, fending him off with help from Joyce. Spike runs away, the school is saved, and Joyce is so impressed with Buffy's leadership that she doesn't ground her. The next day, a defeated Spike concedes Buffy will be hard to defeat. He lifts the Anointed One into the morning sunlight, killing him, and takes over as the lead vampire in Sunnydale.CreditsHosted by Allie Press & Nick MercerEdited by Allie PressMusic by InflatonCultArtwork by Charlotte Fleming DesignConsultation by Evo TerraConnect with us on social media!Email: tabularasabpod@gmail.comTwitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok: @tabularasabpodConnect with Allie on social media:Twitter, Instagram: @DaughterpickTiktok: @futureblackcatbuymeacoffee.com/AlliePressVenmo: Allie-Press

Tabula Rasa, B!tches!: A Buffy Rewatch Show

Giles has been put in charge of Sunnydale High's annual talent show by the new student-hating principal, Principal Snyder. Buffy, Xander, and Willow find Giles' new gig very amusing until they too are forced into participating by Snyder, who sees them, especially Buffy, as trouble makers. Things get worse, however, when a member of the cast is found with her heart removed, leading Giles to suspect there is a demon at work harvesting organs. Buffy first suspects amateur ventriloquist Morgan, a fellow student experiencing extreme headaches. But when he turns up minus his brain, Buffy's suspicion moves to Morgan's creepy dummy, Sid. Sid turns out to be a demon hunter imprisoned in a puppet's body and is hunting the demon himself. Sid helps Buffy track the demon down, saving Giles just before he becomes the demon's next victim. Overview This has to be the greatest highlight of doing this podcast. I got to talk to Armin Shimerman - he of Quark fame from Star Trek DS9. This man is definitely a national treasure. He's a Shakespearean rhetoric scholar, teaches at USC and works with at risk youth. We discuss his book series which is an Edwardian historical novel that uses the characters from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night to weave a masterful tale. This man is so much beyond the characters we know him from and this interview is worth the listen for the knowledge he passes along. ------------------------------- On November 5, 2022, renown stage and television actor Armin Shimerman will release the final book of his historical trilogy, Illyria. Until then, readers are invited to enter the world he created – occupied by familiar and fantastic characters of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night – with a new bundle of the first two books in the series available through Jumpmaster Press. The series opens with Betrayal of Angels. Doctor John Dee is an Elizabethan mathematician, cryptographer, mystic, and The Queen's conjurer. He is commissioned by Her Majesty's spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham, to uncover treason, reveal terrorists, and unveil threats to The Crown by a young Count who governs Illyria, an island in the English Channel. Dr. Dee is accosted by a teen playwright, William, who solicits the renowned scholar's mentorship, which results in an unlikely collaboration to sleuth out sedition on Illyria. The saga continues in book two, A Sea of Troubles. While John Dee investigates the loyalty of a Catholic nobleman on Illyria, he must overcome legal and reputational worries at home Meanwhile, his exiled young assistant William becomes more entangled with the people and the prejudices of the island, including an arranged marriage that is not to his liking. Who is to be believed and who is to be trusted in a time of shifting loyalties?“If you've ever wondered how a relatively unschooled William Shakespeare became the best writer of the English language, and if you've been intrigued by movies and books about the Elizabethan era, The Illyria Trilogy is my response to you. The era and its magic, its politics, its theater, its people, its superstitions, and its cruelty; swirl into that all the characters from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night including the actual man who was the prototype for Prospero in The Tempest. I know the time travel will inspire and entertain," said Armin. “... delightful book … Shimerman creates a charming …wonderful tale ...”Mike LoMonico Institute Director - Folger Shakespeare Library"What a treat to discover that such a remarkable actor would be an equally remarkable writer. “Betrayal of Angels,” … One hell of a story (and storyteller). I impatiently wait for the last two installments.”Rick Berman, Star Trek Executive Producer  “Shimerman's fact-packed, historical adventure [is a] … must read … He had me at the first word …”Scott Carter Emmy-nominated TV producer About Armin A veteran of stage and screen, Armin is widely known for his portrayal of Quark on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Principal Snyder on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Other credits include notable appearances on TV shows from Hill Street Blues and The West Wing to CSI and dozens of others. His voice has been heard in many animated shows and popular game series such as Ratchet & Clank and BioShock. Armin is a renown stage actor, having performed on Broadway and stages across the country. He is also a Shakespeare scholar and teacher, theatre arts lecturer, and former Associate Artistic Director of the Antaeus Theatre Company in Los Angeles. In every generation there is born two snarky gay men to talk about your favorite television episodes where the characters "put on a play." We are talking about ourselves of course! This week we the we sip on Blue Moon (which was delicious and has not turned us into neanderthals...yet) and chat about the season one, episode nine episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer: "The Puppet Show." Listen to us deep dive the humor and the horror of school talent shows, debate whether Principal Snyder or Sid the Dummy is creepier, and review the scoobies performance of Oedipus Rex.

This week, the group speaks with their friend, Sam, who is an aficionado of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series. They begin by finding out what he likes about the series (0:00). Next, the friends discuss their favorite moments from the first season (11:30), as well as some of their least favorite moments (14:45). The group continues with a pseudo-ranking of scariest villains from season 1, including Natalie French, Marc the Demon, and, of course, Principal Snyder (17:30). The group concludes with some burning questions from season 1: Is Zander is smart? Does Buffy have other friends? Is Joyce (Buffy's mom) a bad parent (22:00)? Listen to find out.

Are you ready to be Strong

This week we are talking about S1E9 Puppet Show! For being the lowest rated episode in the series this is one of our favorites! We express our love for everything Sid and how we think this episode could have been so much more than it was (even though we love it as is!). We get to meet Principal Snyder in this episode and that's always a good time!

Ryan and Brittany return to Buffy for season 2, and Buffy has a real Joan Collins 'tude about coming back to school. We don't know what that means either, but it's in the episode. Discussion Points include: Critical Comparison of David Boreanaz and Taylor Lautner, The need for true triple threats, The Cordelia Kidnap Count (tm), Using a tree as a stake, and the incredible career of Principal Snyder. Also, special shout-out to friend of the show, Darren Criss.

Alexander Lester, Graduate Student and Teaching Associate in the Department of Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University, joins me this week for the penultimate conversation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season One. Together we discuss the Sid the Demon-Hunting Puppet series that could have (and maybe should have) spun out of 109, “The Puppet Show,” as well as just how perfectly sinister the introduction of Principal Snyder is. And 110, “Nightmares,” gives us some serious wiggins, but it’s not the killer clowns or forcible Chess Club recruitment practices that get to us — it’s the casual child abuse.   And what’s with all the Nazis in Season One?   Next: James South, editor of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Philosophy: Fear and Trembling in Sunnydale, joins me to take a look at episodes 111, “Out of Mind, Out of Sight” and the dramatic season finale, 112, “Prophecy Girl.”   THE BREAKDOWN Intro / Guest (00:00 - 7:14) Main Topic (7:14 - 1:14:25) Outro / Next (1:14:25 - 1:17:40)   THE LIBRARY Library Closed For Filing - Please Come Back Tomorrow   THE MUSIC “Conversations (feat. Buffy is in deep shit.In our first episode, Principal Snyder has drafted everyone into fundraising for band uniforms. Snyder is a tool, though, as the mayor has a nefarious plot to drug all the townsfolk with overpriced chocolate, making them regress to middle-school age, without a care in the world and forgetting what adulting is. This was a super fun episode, mostly because Anthony Stewart Head generally plays the role of Giles like he's being asked to work on Sunday without overtime. But now that he regresses to Ripper, he's actually fun to watch and engaging. And he fucks Joyce on a cop car. That's a ship I was adamantly opposed to, and then changed my mind halfway through the episode. It turns out that the whole thing was a distraction, so that some ancient demon snake can get a snack on some babies. I'm sticking by my theory that he's hurt by the fat shaming (his name means Glutton) so he eats babies instead of fully-grown humans to cut his calories. In our second episode, the truth comes out about Angel. Buffy's credibility with the group takes a massive hit, and quite frankly I agree with them. Angel is dangerous, and he's not in control of his good side. This episode wasn't as fun as the previous, but it was paced better. The reveal of the other watcher as a rogue agent and her manipulations of the group played out well, and the wounds are not healed at the end of the day. I wonder what this will mean for the Buffy/Faith relationship.

It's Homecoming week at Sunnydale High, and Cordelia and Buffy are locked in a serious competition for the title of Homecoming Queen. Their rivalry must take a back seat, however, when Mr. Trick pits the two of them against a group of professional Slayer-hunters in Slayerfest '98. Meanwhile, Willow and Xander kiss for the first time and are overcome with guilt. Kristen & Mike discuss our introduction to The Mayor as a character and the regression in Cordelia & Buffy's relationship. In Band Candy, true to totalitarian form, Principal Snyder forces the whole school to sell Band Candy (whether or not they play an instrument). Unfortunately, the candy is cursed. and any adult that consumes it reverts back to their teenage selves. Buffy and the gang must babysit their immature elders while also tracking down the candy's origin. Kristen & Mike examine what we learn about these adults from their adolescent states, and speculate as to Ethan's future plans for these poisoned sweets.
