Parent-teacher relationships can be complicated and challenging on both sides. One of the most important things to keep in mind in order to have successful and respectful parent-teacher relationships is that judgment and blame are only going to do more harm than good and will not be beneficial to the student. That is why understanding different perspectives is crucial to a respectful parent-teacher relationship. There is no doubt that many people act differently based on their setting and the expectations of that setting. Our students are no different. There are different resources, expectations, and characteristics at home versus at school and because of this, our students may behave differently in each setting. In this episode, I am diving into why this is so important to keep in mind, how to communicate with parents about these differences in behavior, and why it is unproductive to place blame on families.00:50 - A real-life story about how an autism professional's son behaves differently around her than when he is around his teachers04:53 - How the characteristics and expectations at school and at home can vary greatly resulting in different behavior07:55- Why, as an educator, it's important to not allow yourself to blame parents for their child's behavior at school08:40 - Why fixing the setting and utilizing strategies to match with students' skills can help get different skills and behaviors within the classroom 13:16 - My message to you about parent-teacher relationshipsShow Notes: http://autismclassroomresources.com/episode199Resources:Check out the Home Communication Systems on TPTGrab your Free Parent Communication NoteListen to my Working With Families Episode Roundup PlaylistJoin the Autism Classroom Resources' Free Resource Library Get more information about the Special Educator AcademyJoin the Free Facebook Group If you're enjoying this podcast, could you please take a quick moment to leave your review on Apple Podcasts? In this episode, we are thrilled to be joined by Dr. Ashleigh Collins, Dean of Academic Programs at Relay Graduate School Education. Dr. Collins discusses how to form a positive relationship with your child's teacher where you act as partners in scaffolding your child. Research shows that a strong predictor of children's academic and social well-being, especially in earlier childhood, is related to the parent-teacher connection. Dr. Collins speaks to the special importance of keeping lines of communication open between parents and teachers, and provides ideas as to how to do this. Further, Dr. Collins speaks about the benefit of establishing connections with other parents and caregivers in your child's class. In addition, we discuss the state of education and teaching as related to the pandemic and post-pandemic. Please tune in next week for a new episode on separation anxiety at the start of the school year. We have postponed our discussion around our first 100 episodes to bring these important topics related to back to school to our audience. It's back to school time, which means one of the most important topics I love talking about is so relevant right now - the parent teacher partnership. As you might know, I can get on my soapbox about all of us trying to come together to help all of our kids, but especially our neurodivergent kids who have more conflict, more ideas, and more brainstorming that needs to happen when we are trying to teach and parent a child who is not always aligning with the expectations that are right in front of us. They are on their own path. They're on their own timeframe, and we have to be the ones that adapt to that.So today I'm walking you through how a trusting parent-teacher partnership helps your child. Let's find out what to do to build that relationship. ---Sign up for Dr. Emily's weekly newsletter at www.learnwithdremily.comThis is a public episode. The Daniel Study Chapter 4 The Humbling of Nebuchadnezzar This is the fulfillment of Nebuchadnezzar's dream. He was driven to the field with the beast for 7 years because of his pride. The principle taught is that Pride takes a Man's Reason. The character skills taught are pride vs humility. The self-evaluation skills are to determine our symptoms of pride and our expressions of humility. Parent/Teacher training is a discussion of the fear of man and how to identify if I am a people pleaser. These behaviors will be a snare in my life.
Brace yourselves! This episode of Crying In My Car is bursting with laughter, insight, and the sort of sweat that only a good 'teacher workout' can give you! It all starts when we jump into a discussion about the influence of social media on education. Then we dive into a project where kids learn about WWII via Instagram. Who knew history could be so 'grammable, right? Then, we slide into the touchy topic of charter schools. We share a heartwarming tale of a teacher helping a disabled student run a marathon - proving once again that PE teachers aren't just about dodgeball. And things get more than awkward with Teachers In The News as we delve into a class defense of a student getting suspended for...wait for it...recording a teacher dropping a not so suitable for class word. Yikes! But let's not forget leave out the 'graphic' sex-ed book an Illinois teacher introduced. You'll laugh, you'll cringe, you'll question your own high school health class intention. We wrap it up with Devin's unique teacher weight loss routine. Trust us, there's more to this 'teacher workout' than just chasing students and grading papers! Tune in to this hilarious, eyebrow-raising episode of Crying In My Car, where we remind you that teaching is far from a 'textbook' job. --------------------------- Follow Devin at http://DevinComedy.com https://tiktok.com/@devincomedy http://twitter.com/devinsiebold http://instagram.com/devinsiebold Follow James at http://JamesYon.com https://tiktok.com/@jamesyoncomedy
