What Can I Do

Looking for a way to build community and make political change using your artistic skills or an interest in crafting?  Jayna Zweiman was an architect recovering from a life-changing head and neck injury when she found the knitting and crocheting community. It became a critical part of her recovery, and, ultimately, activism. Since then she's founded multiple projects focused on giving crafters a political community that helps educate people through art and provides real, tangible resources to people in need. After co-founding the Pussyhat Project in 2016, she created the Welcome Blanket Project, which gives knitters the chance to create blankets that are turned into educational exhibits, then sent to refugees and asylum seekers through a network of organizations serving the immigrant community. Jayne talks about the logistics of starting and managing a project of this scope, the challenges of making that project sustainable in the long-run, and the joys of creating political communities that welcome introverts. It comes to us like a flash. We’re angry, or inspired, or ready to take action, but then the thought passes, as we begin to feel like it is insurmountable, or to think things like we can “never make a difference.” What if we could heed the call, and listen to that inner voice, beyond what we think we “should” be doing? What if we could rally a community around that idea to have it to go viral, reaching way beyond what we could imagine is possible? Today’s guest is an advocate for women’s rights and empowerment who got together an intimate group of thoughtful, committed citizens, and their actions caught the attention of the country. In January 2017, the Pussyhat Project inspired the sea of pink hats worn by the hundreds of thousands of people who marched for women’s rights. Krista Suh sparked this big idea and is a feminist activist who wants to make the world safer for women and to inspire creativity. Her new book, DIY Rules for a WTF World: How to Speak Up, Get Creative, and Change the World is full of passion, purpose, and inspires others to create their own movements. Here are the takeaways: Turn frustration into action. On election night of November 2016, Krista found herself devastated, and learned that across the country, other women were feeling the same way. A few days later, Krista knew that the women's’ march plans were forming and she wanted to be a part of this history in the making. She began to think of how she could make a change in the world and participate, what outfit she could wear, or what sign she could hold up. Knowing it would be much colder in Washington, D.C. than her temperate Los Angeles home climate, the idea came to her to knit a warm, simple item. A sea of pink hats would make a visual statement of strength and solidarity, and as a newbie knitter, she wanted something that was easy enough for a beginner to make … [0:02:42] Tap into your community.  Krista feels she tapped into crafts that seemed like “women’s work” such as knitting and crocheting, to make a rebellious statement against the patriarchy. When you view yourself as a hero of your own life, the simple act of wearing or making these hats would make these people heroes too. Krista also tapped into the community that was already there for women who wanted to connect and support one another; it was automatic in the culture of the “stitch and bitch.” By putting the need for action with the need for community together, she gave women a way to take a stand … [0:09:08] Let go of the “shoulds” and listen to your inner voice. We often feel the pressure of what we “should” do next; turn your idea into a non-profit, market something, or take more action. After her idea went viral, people in the know were throwing ideas at Krista, but none of those things felt right to her. She continued to follow her intuition and her voice and wrote a book at that time. Through learning how to breathe, Krista learned to slow down her mind and listen to what was important to her, rather than getting distracted by other people’s ideas … [0:12:50] We hope you enjoy the conversation and walk away feeling empowered enough to blaze your own trail. Give it a listen and then download this week’s Momentum Builder to uncover the “spark” that lights your fire. Tune in and turn the volume up for a dose of inspiration and life lessons. You’re never more than One Idea Away from a whole, new reality.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend in 2016, a few weeks after Trump was elected president, Krista Suh was pondering how she could register her discontent and make an impact at the Women’s March scheduled for January, 2017. In a flash of inspiration, Krista launched the Pussyhat Project to knit pink cat-eared hats to wear at the Women’s March in Washington D.C. The project went viral and thousands of hats were knitted and worn at demonstrations around the world.

We review our 2016 achievements and have a Fibershed segment where our minds are blown by discovering that compost can help mitigate climate change.  Marsha is almost finished with her #PussyHatProject hat for the Women's March that will be held in Seattle.  Other than that, she has been working exclusively on her Great Poncho Adventure project.  She is making the Rodeo Drive poncho from Berocco Ultra Alpaca yarn.  It is getting close to finished! Kelly's Great Poncho Adventure is moving along after a mistake in the colorwork meant she had to rip back about 4 inches of work.  It was painful, but worth the effort.  She has adapted the Om Shawl to three colors and is working this out of three different gray yarns from Neighborhood Fiber Co. Kelly has also been spinning.  She finished plying two skeins of the endless 3-ply CVM.  When combined with the bulky CVM singles she has spun, there is a total of 2.5 lbs (of the 6 lbs) that has been spun from this fiber.  She also spun and plied some longwool fiber from deep in the stash (circa 2002?).  She finished 6 #PussyHatProject hats and sent them (along with 4 more of her Aunt's hats) to Washington DC for the Women's March on Washington.  There are 3 more to finish for the San Francisco march that she will be attending.  Kelly was excited to share some work being done by Jeff Creque, the Marin Carbon Project and the Carbon Cycle Institute.  She describes research done by Ryals, et al. in a paper entitled, "Impacts of organic matter amendments on carbon and nitrogen dynamics in grassland soils."  If you would like to hear more about Carbon Farming and other ideas presented at the Fibershed Wool Symposium, the videos are available on the Fibershed site.  If you are interested in purchasing the Climate Beneficial Cloth or making a donation for application of a cubic yard of compost, click here for more information. Marsha and Kelly will be at Stitches West on February 25 and 26.  We will attend the meet-up organized by the Yarniacs and the 2 Knit Lit Chicks starting at about 1 pm on Saturday in the bar of the host hotel.  We hope to see you there!
