Throughout history, fashion has been an integral part of the feminist movement. From Bloomers and Suffragette colors to Pussyhats, the way individuals have dressed has been a large declaration of their rebellion against society's standards for them. This week, we talk all about the waves of feminism as seen through the clothes of the protesters and the influences that had on society. We also talk about the very recent and ongoing situation in Iran with the compulsory hijab and the death of Mahsa Amini. Join us and listen in to Part 1 of this series on the use of art to protest and promote social change. We will consider “Artivism” and it's impact from the AIDS Quilt to the pink Pussy Hats of the Women's March. Co-hosts Sarah Germain Lilly and Sean Stefanic share their experiences in the streets and in performance. Artivist Kween Elissa Stein gives us the 411 on the art and activism we call ”Artivism”, and Leslie Lee of the “Soul Box Project” shares her almost monumental work on the project which has created over 70, 000 origami boxes so far and puts them on display across America . Sean shares our “In Memoriam”: Moussa Fofana who was killed in Maplewood New Jersey at the town recreational complex.
On January 21, 2017, the day after Donald Trump's presidential inauguration, hundreds of cities in the U.S. and across the globe organized Women's Marches in response to Trump's misogynistic comments and as a general rebuke of his election. In this collection edited by Dr. Rachelle (Riki) Saltzman, established and emerging scholars contribute essays that examine the folkloric aspects of the Women's Marches. Hear our conversation as we discuss the symbolic elements of these protests. First, Dr. Saltzman tells me about her start in folklore with her fascinating adventures in documenting the oral histories of Chesapeake watermen on the Eastern Shore in Maryland as a college student and then later curating thousands of World War II letters written by American soldiers who corresponded with a secretary at a Jewish YMCA. We begin our discussion of Pussyhats, Politics, and Public Protest (University Press of Mississippi, 2020) by talking about the deliberate timing of its release. While the publication focuses on the Women's Marches that took place at the beginning of Trump's presidency, the release of the book takes place as his administration wraps up and a new one begins. Dr. Saltzman characterizes the 2017 Women's Marches as “carnivalesque” where public events have a number of features of the carnival – the turning of the world upside down, poking fun, and critiquing those in power under the license of festivity with the possibility of transformative change. The protests signs were also a significant part of the marches, engaging in humor and puns to critique the status quo but also as a means to understand the community. Similarly, the pussy hats also carry symbolic meaning of community making and we share our stories of receiving our own pussy hats from friends. From there we discuss a queer art studio that created conversation about the protests through its jewelry and the multiple generations that attended the protests. Dr. Saltzman is a folklorist at the High Desert Museum and the Oregon Folklife Network where she was also the former Executive Director. She also teaches at the University of Oregon as a lecturer in the Folklore and Public Culture program. Nancy Yan received her PhD in folklore from The Ohio State University and taught First Year Writing, Comparative Studies, and Asian American studies for several years before returning to organizing work. Tu l’entends ? Sarah Corbett is an award-winning campaigner and author. She began her career in activism at the ripe old age of three and went on to have a successful career working for NGOs including Christian Aid, Oxfam and the UK Government Department for International Development. However, her life took a different turn in 2009, when she created the Craftivist Collective, which champions ‘gentle protesting’ and ‘slow activism’, often using stitching and embroidery as a fundamental part of its process. Since then the organisation has grown in size and has thousands of members, while Sarah has delivered talks and lectures around the globe, launched a slew of successful campaigns and worked with the likes of the V&A, Secret Cinema and Unicef. She has also done a TEDx talk that has been seen by more than a million people. In this episode we talk about: the art and strategy behind gentle protesting; why she became disillusioned with traditional forms of activism; picking up her first cross-stitch kit; the importance of beauty; successfully lobbying the board of M&S; and her problem with Pussyhats. This episode is about Pussy Hat Christianity vs. #MAGA Hat Christianity Donna Bowman, author of the Homebrewed Christianity Guide to Being Human, is a rare theologian in that she does qualitative research (translation: she talks to real humans). Donna and Tripp sit down and talk about getting out of the office and library to talk with real people, what made her decide to dedicate her life to educating, that question that hit at the existential register and demanded a better answer than the one she was given, and on reading the puzzle that is the bible Plus, Donna shares some of the cross cultural metaphysical assumptions she's discovered in her research and how they differ from those in the academy, the pussy hats made and worn for the women's marches after Trump's inauguration, the intersection of the symbolic and material, Adorno and "Hillary hate," and using TV and media a place of theological research. It’s the 21st century, 100 years since Australian women were lucky enough to get the vote, and we’ve arrived at the age of Pussyriot and Pussyhats. How did women get here? What does this augur for the future of feminism as a world-wide phenomenon, now drawing a new generation of activists, in some cases connecting them with earlier feminist waves? What is the impact of events in the US in particular for a standard of feminist politics everywhere? In an age when all social movements have a global scope, a panel of feminist academics with specific areas of geopolitical expertise on the US, UK, Russia, and Australia, come together to discuss these questions. Speakers: - Professor Glenda Sluga, P, ARC Laureate Fellow, Professor of International History, FAHA, the University of Sydney - Dr Philippa Hetherington, University College London (UCL) - Associate Professor Laura J Shepherd, , UNSW Sydney - Anna Hush, University of Sydney student Held as part of Sydney Ideas, The Thinker's Guide to the 21st century series on 23 August 2017: http://sydney.edu.au/sydney_ideas/lectures/2017/thinkers_guide_21st_century_2017.shtml

https://onthegroundshow.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/OTG-MAR17-2017WEBSITE.mp3 It's the third week of the month—so it's all about "The F-Word," our monthly exploration of fascism—which is corporate control of the state, combined with repression of human rights and ramped up police and military. Today we devote this entire hour to "The F-Word" with a major address, "The Rise of Trump," given this month by author and activist Chris Hedges, in Vancouver, Canada. Recorded March 3, 2017 by Collectivista and Democracy North at the program "After Trump and the Pussy Hats" sponsored by the Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter and the Asian Women's Coalition Against Prostitution in Vancouver, Canada.
Programledare Henrik Torehammar. Producent Rigmor Ohlsson.
A completed poncho, a train adventure, a handspun sweater, and an amazing beekeeping experience are on this week's show. Marsha's Projects Marsha finished her Rodeo Drive Poncho. Marsha is really happy with this pattern by Staci Perry. She has also worked on her Good Vibes shawl. Even the Pismo Beach socks (yarn from the yarn crawl in our very first podcast) got a little knitting during her adventurous train trip! Kelly's Projects Kelly has finished 4 more Pussy Hats. She also finally got on the ball and knitted the button band the on Funky Grandpa Cardigan. This is a pattern by La Maison Rililie. The button band has an i-cord bind off and Kelly isn't sure whether it will lay flat or not. If, after blocking, it still isn't laying flat, she will need to experiment with needles that are either larger or smaller. She isn't sure which direction will solve the issue. Kelly has also been working on her poncho and is past the halfway point! She is using Andrea Mowry's Om Shawl pattern. "Advent-ewes" Marsha had quite the train adventure trying to get to Spokane to visit friends. Hours of delay had her almost hysterical! On the positive side, it gave her plenty of time to finish her Rodeo Drive Poncho. She had planned to visit a couple of Spokane yarn shops. One was closed while she was there. Another that she saw from the train, The Knitting Factory, turned out to be a music concert venue and nightclub. The third was a charm, Sew E-Z Too is a knitting and quilting shop and she was able to visit. Upcoming Events Marsha and Kelly will be at Stitches West on February 25-26. Come say hi to us if you see us. Also, we will be attending the meet-up organized by the Yarniacs and 2 Knit Lit Chicks. The meet-up is in the lobby bar area of the Hyatt (host hotel) and will start at around 1 pm. We can't wait!!! Bees Kelly had a great bee adventure last weekend. A small beehive was found in a drainage pipe where her husband works. The area is slated for some construction and the hive had to be removed so Kelly went in on Saturday to remove it and bring it home to her yard. The experience was AMAZING! She was able to cut down the combs and wedge them between rubber bands in frames that then went into her bee box. Overnight almost all the bees went into the box (because the queen and all their brood was in there). Next morning she closed them in and took them home. Such an interesting process! So far they seem to be doing very well. They are a small hive, but busy bringing in pollen. What would you like to hear us talk about? The Women's March website and the Indivisible Guide website are both mentioned in this episode. Marsha and Kelly both attended marches and they talk about the experience. So many knitters made so many Pussyhats! The Ewes have also been thinking about 2017 goals, and the political realm, along with some personal challenges of the past year, have played a part in that thought process. If you are a new listener, you might want to listen to a different episode first. This one is not typical of the podcast, but we thought it was an important discussion to share with you.

Danie finished another two squares on her Micah's Blanket, and started and finished two Pussyhats for the Women's March on Washington. Current Projects Susie knit just a little bit on her Vedai sweater, edged a couple of squares on her Oh Scrap Blanket, and added a couple of inches on the third Newborn Bonnet & Wrap Set. She also worked on the second of her Directional Socks, and cast-on a Come What May shawl using KnitCircus Lavish in Humperdink, Humperdink, Humperdink. Danie has been working on her Micah's Blanket, and on her First Hermione's Everyday Socks. Project: Reconsideration Susie pretty quickly reconsidered her Luckdragon Shawl. She's going to save the pattern for when she's more in a "thinking-knit" place. Danie is considering frogging her Handspun Elda Cardigan and reknitting it into a Harvest cardigan. Enhance the Stash Susie acquired some yarn from The Lemonade Shop - a skein of DK in Spectravision and two skeins of Mighty Sock in Witch, Please, which may or may not become a Sugar Plum Shawl. Danie treated herself to some much-deserved goodies from the Bar Maids. New to Me Susie tried out the yarn-themed video game called Unravel, hopped on the Instant Pot bandwagon, and put a purple streak in her hair.
