Not having the security blanket, an incognito experience, and sleeping on pool tables. Will Sprott (Shannon & The Clams, Will Sprott) "In August 2022, Shannon Shaw's world was turned inside out. With mere weeks to go until their wedding, the singer's fiancé, Joe Haener, died in a horrific car accident in front of his family's vegetable farm in Oregon. It was a devastating loss that hit Shannon & The Clams with cataclysmic force. Shaw's bandmates, guitarist Cody Blanchard, keyboard player Will Sprott, and drummer Nate Mahan, had also grown close to Haener, a drummer and fixture of the Bay Area music scene. They canceled shows and rallied around Shaw as fans reached out to show their support. Shaw spent her nights with Blanchard and his family or with the Haeners, finding comfort in community. She adopted a fluffy dog named Spanky-Joe. She moved out of the Portland apartment where she and Haener had been living. She fearlessly chronicled the whole experience online. “Losing Joe made me unafraid of so many things,” Shaw says. “I have a lot less fear. It's given me new perspective. Baring my soul is so much less scary than it would've been before.” Amid this overwhelming sense of grief, melodies and lyrics began to flow out of Shaw. Instagram posts about her relationship with Haener became the building blocks of new compositions. Her Clams bandmates were also reeling and writing their own new songs. From the shock and trauma of that tragedy comes Shannon & The Clams' latest album, The Moon Is In The Wrong Place, a powerful exploration of loss, time, love, and resilience that stands as the beloved garage band's most ambitious, emotionally searing recording to date. In preparing to record, The Clams passed demos back and forth for months and, uncharacteristically for them, jammed on unfinished riffs to see what would happen. “Shannon and I usually write separately, and we usually bring pretty crafted, finished songs,” says Blanchard, who developed tennis elbow after their marathon rehearsal sessions. When Shaw struggled to find the right chords to go with her melodies, she obtained an Omnichord — an electronic instrument with a built-in set of chords and rhythms — and unlocked a new creative palette. In 2023, they returned to Nashville to record with longtime collaborator Dan Auerbach at Easy Eye Sound Studios — who oversaw 2018's Onion and 2021's Year Of The Spider — and captured what they'd been creating. The results show the group ascending to new creative highs, while still weaving in the classic garage-rock and girl-group sounds that have long been a hallmark of their work. This time around, they venture to deeper, farther out musical locations than before and bring a new sophistication and intricacy to their arrangements, plus they get an assist from pro wrestling great Mick Foley on handclaps. Meanwhile, Shaw's powerful voice veers between sweetness and snarl — sometimes within the space of a single lyric." My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Robert Blake Whitehill, author of the book Deadrise. Robert was born into a Quaker family in Mardela Springs, just outside Salisbury on Maryland's Eastern Shore peninsula. He grew up sailing the Chesapeake Bay, and one of her most beautiful tributaries, the Chester River. After graduating from Westtown School, Whitehill stayed in Pennsylvania to earn his B.A. in creative writing at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges. Later he trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. He is the author of the award-winning, critically acclaimed, multi-category, international Kindle bestselling Ben Blackshaw thrillers, which currently has six titles, and audiobooks in the works in German and English. Whitehill lives in New Jersey with his wife and son. When he wasn't sailing, or knocking around the sky in a Cessna 152, Whitehill published several articles about his home waters in Chesapeake Bay Magazine. He is also the managing partner of Calaveras Media LLC, a feature film and television development company. He is a member of SAG-AFTRA, International Thriller Writers, GPA Aviation Club, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and served for a number of years as an EMT-B with the Montclair Ambulance Unit. In my book review, I stated Deadrise, a thriller, is Book #1 in The Ben Blackshaw Series. If you love a Tom Clancy kind of novel, then you will love this series. We meet Ben underwater - clamming in the Chesapeake Bay near Smith Island. However, instead of finding clams, he finds a sunken boat, 19 boxes of gold bouillon, a dirty bomb, and his dead father - a man he hasn't seen in 15 years. His clamming partner, Knocker Ellis, isn't as surprised as he should be, nor are the other inhabitants of the island. When Maynard Chalk learns his deal has gone sour, and that Ben's father is to blame, he comes to the island to get his money and the bomb - but Ben has other plans. I loved Robert's characters, and especially loved that Smith Island with all her quirky inhabitants was as much of a characters as Ben. If you love a good thriller with all the twists and turns, and great characters, then you will want to read Deadrise. In this episode of the "How to Protect the Ocean" podcast, host Andrew Luan discusses the fascinating connection between giant clams and the efficiency of solar panels. He highlights the vibrant colors of giant clams, which are not only visually stunning but also play a crucial role in coral reef ecosystems, particularly in the Southeast Pacific. The key focus is on the algae, specifically zooxanthellae, that live within the soft tissue of giant clams. These algae absorb sunlight and are essential for the clams' survival, as they facilitate photosynthesis and contribute to the clam's calcium shell formation. Remarkably, giant clams can absorb about 95% of the light that hits them, significantly outperforming current solar panel technology, which has an efficiency of around 67%. Luan emphasizes the potential for replicating the light-absorbing mechanisms of giant clams in solar panel design. By studying the arrangement of the algae within the clams, scientists could potentially enhance solar panel efficiency, making them more effective in harnessing solar energy. This innovation could be pivotal in addressing global energy needs and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The episode underscores the importance of protecting biodiversity, as the loss of species like giant clams could mean missing out on valuable insights and advancements in renewable energy technology. Luan encourages listeners to appreciate the interconnectedness of marine life and its potential benefits for humanity, particularly in the context of sustainable energy solutions. Shannon Shaw's signature is to channel her layered feelings into her art. As the founder and vocalist of the indie punk band Shannon and the Clams, she has shared about some of the hardest things in her life through her music. Earlier this year Shannon and her band released their latest album: The Moon is in the Wrong Place. Tasked with the uniquely difficult need to express and explore the various stages of grief after the shocking death of her fiancé, The Moon is in the Wrong Place is a vulnerable and honest journey filtered through the band's signature garage-soul sound. Isa Nakazawa discusses how Shannon's Capricorn rising serves as the catalyst to explore her artistic expression despite being told music wasn't for her. While her Gemini Sun knows how to move fluidly between ecstasy, despair, grief and eternal love.
No Nut November + the 69th Restaurant! Nice! Note: One of the mics wasn't working properly. It should sound fine, but Dana is a little quieter than I would've liked. Apologies in advance. Note #2: This was also recorded before the decision was made to shake up the show's format this season, so it's the final episode to contain "This Is Way Too Much," "What's Going On Over There?" and no super awesome cold opens. Sam's Hofbrau is technically a strip club, but not based on what we experienced! I brought adult film star Ryan Keely and Dana Scarborough of the I Seduce the Dragon podcast to the strip club for the food which is like reading Playboy for the articles! What we ate: Street tacos, hamburger, breakfast sandwich, wings, fries, & coffee Ryan trashes J.W. On the show this time, it's the joy and heartbreak R&B of Shannon & the Clams. Shannon & The Clams formed when bassist Shannon Shaw met guitarist Cody Blanchard at the California College of the Arts. The band is rounded out by Nate Mahan on drums and Will Sprott on Keys, and for this performance Victor Franco on percussion. They play unapologetically weird pop - a sometimes surfy blend of psych-rock, doo wop, and R&B. Many gardeners use clam shells as decorations. But not many garden the clams themselves. Yet clam gardens can yield more clams than untended shorelines, provide more species diversity, and even protect the clams from the acidity in today's oceans.Clams were gardened as early as 4,000 years ago by the people of the Pacific Northwest, from Alaska to Washington. In some regions, the gardens lined the entire coastline. The gardens consisted of short walls built along the shore, forming enclosures, with terraces behind the walls. Water flowed in, and some of it was trapped as the tide rolled out. That provided habitat for littleneck and butter clams. The gardens were abandoned after European settlers moved in. But research over the past decade shows that the gardens were highly effective. They could produce up to twice as many littleneck clams as uncultivated areas, and four times as many butter clams. The gardens also attracted other life, including seaweed and sea cucumbers, providing a more diverse diet for the gardeners.Gardens also contained a lot of clam shells, which provide the minerals clams need to make new shells. That's especially important today, because higher levels of ocean acidity make it harder for clams to produce shells. The Swinomish people of Washington have recently built new clam gardens. They produce food, provide a training ground, and give scientists a place to study the gardens and their “crops”—butter and littleneck clams.
