"If you're not having fun, you're the asshole," is a Susan Messing joint. It's a zen koan of a piece of comedy, art, and life advice that I took issue with back in my improv days. The hella influential improviser and teacher shares why she said it, her own issues with it, and ideas about death, learning what you actually want, a motorcycle ride with her dad, Neptune Society, and being choke fucked with love by a redwood tree.Content warning: cancer, stroke, improv comedy.Patreon supporters make This Is Your Afterlife possible and get awesome bonus episodes. If This is True has the distinct honor of introducing you to Rachael Mason! She is the new Director of Education at iO Theater in Chicago, and she also performs regularly with the equally legendary Susan Messing as "The Boys." She's worked with theater novices, Masters Degree Candidates at universities, and working professionals both in and outside of the entertainment industry. Candor is her love language. She passionately believes that putting art where there was none before is an act of revolution. We discussed this importance and the creation of something from nothing as being essential in these perilous times. When we recorded this, Rachael was recovering from COVID-19, but she soldiered on and was a terrific guest. In this, our 50th episode!, Whit has a conversation with Rachael Mason. Rachael has been a mainstay of the Chicago improv scene for many years. She has been a central figure in the Second City's curriculum and performance and has moved to iO which is set to re-launch under new ownership in Fall of 2022. There, she is the Director of Education and is involved in both the design of the theater's improv curriculum and performance structures – and as you might guess, we spend some time discussing what is to come at iO. Rachael's teaching also extends to coursework at DePaul University and Columbia Chicago, as well as her own workshops that she has delivered all around the world. Her performance credits are many, with many credits at Secondy City, iO, Annoyance, Baby Wants Candy, as well as regularly performing with her good friend and improv beshert, Susan Messing. You can get access to drop in classes and more through ioimprov.com, which certainly will develop more fully in the months and years following the release of this episode.

This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I talk to the amazingly funny Rachael Mason. Rachael Mason is a veteran improviser and a teaching artist of the famed Chicago improv scene. She started her creative career by taking classes and performing at The Annoyance, iO, and Second City. Later, she taught improv workshops at theaters and universities all across the Chicago area. Rachael Mason has performed and taught all over the world, primarily headlining festivals with her comedy partner Susan Messing in their duo troupe, “The Boys.” Rachael was an absolute joy to talk to. I was honored that she said yes to being on the podcast! She opens the conversation by telling me she was a witch that was burned at the stake. The hilarity continues from there. In our conversation, Rachael tells me about her start in the Chicago improv scene and immersing herself in classes at 3 theaters at once. Listening to her describe her schedule, I was thinking, when did she sleep? But then I remembered being in my twenties and I did that schedule for years too. Still, she consumed a lot of improv very quickly. Rachael and I bond over both being improv instructors. We both love connecting with our students. We talk about having a good time, about teamwork, and about professionalism onstage. I tell her about one of my first experiences with teaching improv! Rachael tells me how happy she is to have spent so many years sharing the stage with her friend, Susan Messing. She reminisces about the fun adventures they've had performing as The Boys! We talk about artists who inspire us: Bo Burnham, Hannah Gadsby, and Justin Kauffman's Schadenfreude. Rachael helps me find the books I need to consume to know more about improv history: Improv Nation, The Second City Almanac, Something Wonderful Right Away, and Days and Nights at the Second City. Rachael was so funny. I really enjoyed all the twists and turns and tangents we had in our conversation! Support Rachael Mason by going to see her perform. An incredible chat with the legendary Susan Messing. Susan, a leader in improv, has been at the forefront of it all since the mid 80s. Originally a graduate of the theatre program at Northwestern University, she went on to pursue improv in 1986. She's been doing it ever since, creating curriculums, teaching and performing for the iO, The Annoyance, The Second City, DePaul University, The University of Chicago, and around the globe. She's widely known for her critically acclaimed show Messing With A Friend and also performs regularly with Rachael Mason (friend of the podcast) in The Boys. In this roller coaster of an episode, she will talk about many things including the scene in Chicago 1986, the humility of being a lifelong learner and the current state of improv with predictions for the future. More on Susan in her Wikipedia page Check out The Boys on Facebook
Jeff has the most fun chatting with Rachael Mason of Chicago Improv Fame. Rachael is the program head of Advanced Improvisation at Second City. She also teaches at DePaul University, Columbia Chicago, the Harold Ramis Film School and her own workshops all around the world. Rachael is a former member of Baby Wants Candy and has performed regularly at iO and Annoyance. She currently plays with the Second City All Stars as well as in Second City's first resident improv show, The Boys with Susan Messing. She shares several stories about the early Chicago improv scene including her training under Del Close in his final years. They discuss auditions and the audition process (including SNL's). She also talks about applications for improv outside of comedy shows, including parenting and therapy. This culminates in stories about her adventures entertaining US troops. It's still MEAT CUTE month over here at MEAT headquarters, which means we are featuring real live comedy couples on the show! This week, it's a little bit different, because the couple is Lani Engstrom (Basic Aliens) and our very own host, Josh Simpson. Thankfully, Rachael Mason (Assembly, UCB) came on to talk and improvise with us so Josh didn't make it all about himself. Josh and Lani share stories about scoring weed, thwarting old pervs and losing their debit cards in Mexico as well as a nightmarish trip down the PCH and back. These true stories inspire improvised scenes about pushy merchants / parents, a high falutin office of big spenders, a goth Six Flags and a whole bunch more. If you'd like to support the show and / or get access to our 2nd weekly episode The Potatoes where Josh and Jake improvise and talk shop, please consider joining our patreon! Welcome to another episode of Ckiara Nation! This one is extra special. Director Rachel Mason will be joining us to talk about her film, “Circus of Books”, available on Netflix. We also have guest hosts: Josh Rotter, a reporter with 48 Hills, an independent news and culture site catered to San Francisco Bay Area. Saycsar Fleurima, filmmaker and musician. We Thank Rachel, for taking time out from your busy schedule to give us this interview! We love you! Two person shows have been a growing trend in improv and with the release of a three part Netflix special from improvisers Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz, there is a now a mainstream spotlight on improvised duos. Despite theatres being closed right now, people around the world are talking about and forming opinions on what an improvised two person show can be. Rachael began her career in improvisation at Skidmore College, home of the National College Comedy Festival, with the Ad-Liberal Artists. After graduating with a degree in English Literature (concentrating on Shakespearean Studies) she moved to Chicago to study improv comedy with Del Close. Currently the head of Advanced Improvisation at The Second City, she created the Dramatic Improv programs as well as The History of Satire Series for The Second City Training Center. Rachael has performed musical improv with Baby Wants Candy at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, directed and performed at The Annoyance Theater, and she was Training Center Director at iO Theater for 8 years. She is part of the cast of The Second City Improv All-Stars and performs in The Boys, with Susan Messing.
Most people aren't aware there was more than one camp on Crystal Lake. On today's episode Adam talks to two counselors in training with quite a different take on the goings on of that particular Friday the 13th.
2017 was a big year for The MEAT. We put out over 50 episodes with over 100 guests. The boys took a choo choo train from Los Angeles to NYC and put on 10 live shows in 9 cities along the way. We had our lover's month in February featuring real live couples and most importantly, we had some really fun shows. This episode features 10 of our favorite scenes from the year with guests like Ian Roberts, Heather Anne Campbell, Lauren Adams, Abra Tabak, Adam Frucci, Joel Spence, Lydia Hensler, Edgar Momplaisir, Brennan Lee Mulligan, Ellie Kovara, Julia Meltzer, James Mastraieni, Dhruv Uday Singh, Jacquis Neal, Lauren Robertson, Jessica Uhler, Greg Gallant, Rachael Mason, Allie Jennings and Mia Schauffler! We cover everything from Protestants to James Bond to Pennywise the clown to sphincters. Thanks for such a great year, and look forward to Part 2 with more of our favorite scenes coming next week. Lastly, if you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a nice rating and review in the iTunes store. Happy holidays. Greg Gallant (Son of Zorn & UCB's Queen George) and Rachael Mason (So This is the Place, UCB Teacher's Lounge) join The MEAT on the anniversary of 9/11 to share memories from that day. Rachael then tells a story about how her SOHO loft was lightly haunted which spurns ghost stories from everyone. Greg tells the story of his housing burning down as a kid, and lo and behold Rachael ALSO had her apartment burn down last year. What a strange coincidence! These true stories inspire improvised scenes about missing the Brewer game, a troubled boy named Fudge who annoys ghosts, a newspaper with pet centric headlines and more! Today’s guest on “ADD Comedy with Dave Razowsky” is Jules Munns. Jules is the Co-Artistic Director of The Nursery, the great improv school in London. Jules is a passionate improvisor and teacher, who has studied under our friends Patti Stiles, Susan Messing, Rachael Mason, and Keith Johnstone. He studied at the Guildhall School, which specializes in classical theater, and when you watch him play, it comes through. Jules and his Co-Artistic Director Judith Amsenga have brought me out to London to teach and perform many times. The actors of The Nursery are truly inspiring. Over too many cups of thick coffee we chatted about overcoming challenges, the journey to acceptance, and, in Jules’ words, learning to “just be with the stuff that’s happening here.” This is one great chat recorded in a flat in London.
Rachael Mason is our guest today on “ADD Comedy with Dave Razowsky.” I only wish I can be as cool as Rachael. As if being the head of Advanced Improv at Second City in Chicago, having run the Training Center for iO West, improvising with The Second City Improv All Stars, “The Boys,” a former member of “Baby Wants Candy,” and having performed on Second City Tour Boats isn’t accomplishment enough, she also travels around the world performing with Susan Messing. She’s an accomplished teacher, mentor, and constant source of inspiration. I’m not screwing around here when I tell you how awesome she and this podcast episode are. Stick around for Rachael’s addition to our newly named podcast segment, “Not My Finest Hour.” This episode was recorded at Chicago’s wonderful Kopi Cafe. Enjoy!
In this episode, Cody Melcher is joined by nerd creator and producer Aaron J Amendola and comedian Rachael Mason to talk about the factually-proven negative ramifications of evil horror caused by comic books! You can find the truth-light that is 'Seduction of the Innocent' downloadable online and in the garage sale of your neighborhood joykill. Rachael Mason is the Head of Advanced Improvisation at Second City, a phenomenal improviser, and a beloved improv teacher in Chicago. In this episode, Rachael talks about the responsibility women have in creating comedy's future, her new role at Second City, and she and Jimmy perform a scene in the dark like an old timey radio play. Don't miss it!
Ranjit and Cody are dragged through the desolate desolation of Stephenie Meyer’s ‘Twilight’ by Rachael Mason (Second City, our hearts). The good news is: everyone survived! The bad news is: this entire podcast is about the book ‘Twilight’ written by Stephenie Meyer! Somehow, this book was worse than a book about the Holocaust being caused by homosexuals. Listen along as Cody has a nervous breakdown under the realization that Stephenie Meyer has a career as an author.
The Second City's Improv Allstars is a short form improv show a running in the UP Theater at The Second City Chicago. Rachael Mason and Ryan Archibald - two of Chicago's finest improvisers - are both part of the cast. They sat down with Jimmy and helped him overcome his fear and judgment about short form improv. You can hear his transformation take place on stage. Thanks for listening!
