Today's guest is another true legend in the world of improv, Susan Messing. She's one of the founding members of The Annoyance Theater, where she has created roles in over thirty original productions including the longest-running musical in Chicago, Co-Ed Prison Sluts.  Susan teaches and performs at the Annoyance Theater and the iO Theater and has also taught improvisational comedy for DePaul University, The University of Chicago and Loyola University.  Her essays have been published in The Second City Almanac of Improvisation and in Charna Halpern's book, Art By Committee.  Susan has also had multiple television and movie appearances, including a role in the film “Let's Go to Prison”.  We talk a little about that experience and how much she loved it. Susan is known all over for being a strong, unfiltered performer.  She has been a source of inspiration to performers everywhere, including myself.  We had a very honest and fun conversation today, and I'm so excited to share this conversation with all of you!

She started her creative career by taking classes and performing at The Annoyance, iO, and Second City. Later, she taught improv workshops at theaters and universities all across the Chicago area. Rachael Mason has performed and taught all over the world, primarily headlining festivals with her comedy partner Susan Messing in their duo troupe, “The Boys.” Rachael was an absolute joy to talk to. I was honored that she said yes to being on the podcast! She opens the conversation by telling me she was a witch that was burned at the stake. The hilarity continues from there. In our conversation, Rachael tells me about her start in the Chicago improv scene and immersing herself in classes at 3 theaters at once. Listening to her describe her schedule, I was thinking, when did she sleep? But then I remembered being in my twenties and I did that schedule for years too. Still, she consumed a lot of improv very quickly. Rachael and I bond over both being improv instructors. We both love connecting with our students. We talk about having a good time, about teamwork, and about professionalism onstage. I tell her about one of my first experiences with teaching improv! Rachael tells me how happy she is to have spent so many years sharing the stage with her friend, Susan Messing. She reminisces about the fun adventures they've had performing as The Boys! We talk about artists who inspire us: Bo Burnham, Hannah Gadsby, and Justin Kauffman's Schadenfreude. Rachael helps me find the books I need to consume to know more about improv history: Improv Nation, The Second City Almanac, Something Wonderful Right Away, and Days and Nights at the Second City. Rachael was so funny. I really enjoyed all the twists and turns and tangents we had in our conversation! Support Rachael Mason by going to see her perform. Hi and welcome to what I hope is the first of many episodes! I'm your host Lauren Morris. I am also the founder and director of AdLib Theatre. Just like with the Improv Teachers podcast, I wanted to take a closer look into the world of artistic directors. What do we look for when performers take to the stage? How can we give clear notes? What goes on behind the scenes? These are some of the questions we will be examining in these short episodes. Every week or so, I will give you a recap of our show, what the expectation was, how it turned out, and some tips and tricks on bringing your improv to life on stage! I hope you enjoy this new experiment and I look forward to this adventure with you. About Me (Lauren Morris): Lauren Morris is the founder and director of AdLib Theatre Company as well as the Executive Producer for the Central Florida Improv Festival. Lauren studied improv at The Annoyance Theatre & Bar with Mick Napier and with Paul Vaillancourt (co-Founder of iO West) at iO West. She has taken workshops and classes with such improv notables as Kevin Mullaney, Jill Bernard, Rebecca and Rich Sohn, Adal Rifai, Susan Messing, and Mark Sutton and members of the UCB Theater in New York City. Lauren hosts The Improv Teachers (winner of Best of Improv Podcasts, 2017, PlayerFM). A podcast dedicated to discussing the art of teaching improv. Additionally, she is a veteran of numerous improv festivals where she has been invited to perform and teach. As a writer, Lauren has been featured in publications such as Weekly Humorist, Slackjaw, Belladonna, MockMom, Points in Case, and Robot Butt. She honed her satire skills via Second City. Susan Messing is an improv deity, and she was nice enough to come on the show and tackle some subjects she cannot stop reading about fueled by anger and curiosity. We focus more on the Scientology side of things than anything else, but the whole thing is fascinating and hilarious just like Susan. She's a big advocate of practicing what you preach when it comes to being improv teacher, so it makes a lot of sense that her frustrations with the topic lie mostly with misinformation and mistreatment of followers. Look forward to a couple of great cameos from Michael McCarthy, Susan's husband, to whom she got engaged while I was in her class at Annoyance. I'm pretty sure I said "bullshit" when she told us she got engaged since the last class.
