The GOP isn't looking to cut Medicaid, they want to "save" it, "preserve it" or in other words, just making it harder for working folks in this country. Also, the legacy of DOGE is already starting to come into form, specifically with Social Security. Being a positive person by nature can be tough when it seems like there are fires burning, everywhere one looks... but it can be done and it HAS to be done, and I'm sharing some ways I am attempting to do that, right now.No matter what stage of life you are in, there are things you can do to find joy, and also resist when you know things are not right. We teach our kids to say something and stand up for others, and I feel we must practice what we preach, especially during this historical time. One thing that has been helpful are finding smart and experienced people who fact-check and have worked in law/politics AKA know way more than me, to help me find these outlets. Here are a few- feel free to check them out and support them if you value what they share:@emilyinyourphone - has worked as a lawyer and involved in politics in the past- also has a great substack and BOOK- Democracy in Retrograde -- @sharonsayso- also has a great book- The Small and Mighty, calls herself America's Government Teacher- always sharing the facts and schooling us all@annie_wu22 - Has actively worked on various campaigns and always in the know@motherhoodforgood- Kate Duffy- sharing news, culture and advocacy made easyMany more, but those are a great start if you are curious! Please feel free to message me @We_arrow_on_podcast with other ideas or comments any time! Thanks for the listen, and feel free to share with someone who may enjoy! xx, Ash

Another week, this time TWO inspiring Milwaukee women. “Nevertheless, she persisted.” YES. SHE. DID. Oh Mitch McConnell, look what you started. Today on the podcast, get ready to be inspired to start SMALL, to take ACTION, and to DO something. This week I'm talking with two local sisters, Lisa Williams and Cheryl Juech, who started their own home-grown activism with their group the PERSISTers. The PERSISTers began around Lisa's dining room table in Wauwatosa in 2016 with a handful of friends and a few postcards. And it has steadily grown into a local movement - meeting weekly to share heartbreaks and hopes and - most importantly - committing to tangible and concrete weekly actions that demand more from our elected representatives. If you are feeling overwhelmed with the chaos of the state of our nation, let this week's interview give you small, immediate steps you can take today to stay alert and stay active. We're kicking off a month of non-traditional holiday films with Bridget Jones's Diary, welcoming back guests Kate Duffy and Danny Zeliger to discuss this Sex and the City meets Pride and Prejudice chick flick classic. We talk about the scandal of casting Texas-born Renee Zellweger as a definitively British character, Colin Firth's re-envisioning of his BBC Mr. Darcy as the modern Mark Darcy, Hugh Grant's pitch-perfect though (at the time) against-type portrayal of sleazy Daniel Cleaver, Helen Fielding's brilliant choice to re-imagine Jane Austen in the contemporary era, the movie's perfect balance of humor and romance, John's personal adventures in cooking blue soup, the importance of someone liking you just as you are, and how all four of us see this film as a perfect watch for the Christmas-to-New Year holiday timeframe. Throw on your best reindeer jumper, fill your plate with turkey curry, and give us a listen!

This week, a REAL question that I've wondered myself; one that has made ME nervous; and if I'm honest, has even stopped me from signing up to volunteer around election season (but NOT anymore!). What is it actually like to door-to-door canvas for a candidate? What do I say when someone opens the door? What if they challenge me? How will I know how to respond. This week on the pod meet Kate Duffy, Founder of Motherhood for Good, previously known as Moms for Mandela. Listen as we talk about … The last proverbial straw that finally had her pushing publish on her first post that would begin her movement. How she's able to let go of ‘mom guilt' and embrace action. One of the fundamental tenets of democracy is the ability of ordinary folks to petition their government without fear of retribution—unless you signed a petition a dozen years ago to recall Scott Walker for stripping away workers' rights. Ever since then, conservative politicians have put those petition signers in a database in order to seek retribution at the right time. To celebrate, we welcome back one of our earliest guests, the great Kate Duffy, to discuss a film that has been our number one requested comfort film over the course of the show. We talk about the incredible Nathan Lane and his unforgettable breakout role as Albert/Starina, how the film deals with irony around conservative family values, the restrained hysteria of Robin Williams's Armand and how it relates to male anxiety, the advancements (and sometimes, lack thereof) with LGBTQ+ rights, the director/writer dream team of Mike Nichols and Elaine May, Gene Hackman's surprising improv background, Dan Futterman's Val as the villain of the film, the masterful opening shot by the great cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, the major changes in the journalism economy since the mid-90s, and Kate's memories of watching the movie over and over with her dad. We also have a quick talk about our now-extensive back catalog and which episodes stand out to us most. Grab your "pirin" tablets, relax, and join us for the episode that takes us into triple digits!

On today's episode, we're celebrating Women's History Month! Of course we celebrate women every single week on the pod, but this week, we wanted to take a closer look at the political power of moms. We're joined by North Carolina organizer Tonya Martin, who's filling in for Jasmine this week while she's hard at work in the Georgia legislature. We're joined by Kate Duffy, a mom in Wisconsin who started a group to support Mandela Barnes called Moms For Mandela. And after the election, Kate turned her group into a community called Motherhood For Good. Kate shares her super relatable journey into politics and what's so special about moms. And after that, Amanda sits down with Julie Kohler of the podcast White Picket Fence. Amanda and Julie chat about “parents' rights,” how moms have been involved in politics throughout history, and how misogyny hurts everyone. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Tonya raise a glass to brave daughters, amazing teams, and last-minute get-togethers in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”We celebrate women every day on this podcast, but today's episode is coming out on International Women's Day, so we want to encourage everyone to listen to the stories of all the amazing women in this country. And one great way to do that is to follow Red Wine and Blue on social media, where we share women's stories and voices every single day.For a transcript of this episode, please email theswppod@redwine.blue. Our Trailblazer episodes continue this week with Jude Deveraux, an early historical romance author who broke several publishing barriers over her more than forty year career. In this episode, we talk about her journey through the Wild West of romance in the late 1970s, her publishing career at Avon Books, Pocket Books and Ballantine. We talk about the judgement and misogyny that circles romance, the buying power of readers, and the way the genre and bookselling has changed. We also talk about her writing process, and what it's like to be Jude Deveraux. This one is a real joy for us, as we wouldn't be the readers or writers we are without Jude Deveraux. This episode is sponsored by Avon Books, publisher of Joanna Shupe's The Bride Goes Rogue, and Amazon's Kindle Vella, publisher of Eloisa James's The Seduction Series. Our next read along is Virginia Henley's The Dragon and the Jewel, a deep cut from Sarah's childhood. Check your content warnings and remember this one is from 1991, so we don't even know, honestly. We're flying without a net here. Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo or your local indie.Show NotesLike many of our trailblazers, Jude Deveraux's first brush with romance was Kathleen E Woodiwiss's The Flame & the Flower. The publisher with “the prettiest covers” in the 1970s she references was Woodiwiss's publisher, Avon Books. Books of Jude Deveraux's that we talk about in depth include: The Enchanted Land (her debut novel), A Knight in Shining Armor (early time-travel romance), Sweet Liar, The Providence Falls series with Tara Sheets, The Girl from Summer Hill, Twin of Ice (the twins!!), and “The Matchmakers” a short story in The Invitation collection (featuring Cale & the angel sex scene). The Four Js were Jude Deveraux, Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey and Judith McNaught.People mentioned in the episode: Kate Duffy, editor at Silhouette Books and Pocket Books; Joan Schulhafer, publicist at Pocket Books; Richard Gallen, publisher & packager; Ronald Busch, publisher of Pocket Books; Robert Gottlieb, agent; Linda Marrow, editor at Ballantine/Doubleday/Dell; Kathryn Falk, publisher of Romantic Times Magazine; Kathe Robin, reviewer at Romantic Times Magazine.
This week we welcome a special guest, Kate Duffy, one of our dearest friends, to discuss her favorite comfort film, Moonstruck. It's totally serendipitous, since The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a meta-film starring Nicolas Cage as a version of himself, came out this week as well, and we all love him awful, like Cher's wonderful Loretta in Moonstruck. We talk magical realism, Shanley screenplays, love as strong as a pizza pie to the face, and how much we all want to be a fantastic old grandpa with a dog pack.

Erin and Nicole sit down for another mono y mono episode and reflect on the immense possibilities they continue to see for their podcast, their lives...and for their listeners. They can see more and more every day that every single person out there has a unique and special purpose...and if they spend even a little time opening up "curtains", they'll find the answers they need to make it happen. Kicking off with some old stories Nicole Licata Grant an Erin Hatzikostas reminisce about the days when they were roomies, including when Nicole dug someone's car out of the snow with a plastic bowl (her first entrepreneurial adventure - she did NOT do it pro bono!) Following on from Erin's interview with Amy Lacey of Cali'flour Foods (Episode 37), and Erin's guilty pleasure for Fish Sticks, Nicole also tells their infamous fish sticks story. They recap their recent annual shopping trip and some steps you can take to get a healthier gut. But be warned, Erin's WTF of the week came at the cost of a happy gut. Knocking around Nashville, Erin and Nicole share stories about hanging out at Losers ('cause who wants to go next door to Winners...boooring), meeting fans, and Erin's dad networking through getting a young guy to continuously "strip". They open up the curtains about the reason they met up in Nashville and all that they learned that can inspire you to know that anything that's on your head to do, you can figure out how to get there. Erin briefly talks about her interview with Kate Duffy (episode 34), before the two move on to discuss the digital world, building and maintaining a brand and how "there is nothing you can't learn or can't do." Make sure to check our Erin's 2-day workshop March 20th-21st she's holding alongside Kaitlyn Czapiga (from Episode 5) titled "Your Richest Life". - Nicole will be there too!
