In this episode of Share What You're Making Chair & Bacon have a chat with Derrick Coleman, who is the community steward at Ethereum Denver as well as a regular contributor on Raid Guild, where his journey in Web3 began. From there he would make the bridge to his current role, taking care of the health of the community. An appropriate role for him considering it has been precisely the sense of community what has kept him in Web3. “The reason I'm in the space is because there are these communities of people that care for each other and look out for each other because of some shared values or goals. I'm not here for the libertarian not-your-keys-not-your-coin-get-off-my-property vibes. I'm here for the let's make an internet co-op so we can work together and have less extractive value systems sucking out whatever value we create for the sake of the shareholders”. With that in mind and a strong purpose on education, he's been aligned with ETH Denver Ethos to buidl, to create the world we live in and shaping its tools and foundations; this is what excites him about bringing together the people and the technology in a cooperative of people that are incentivized to see each other succeed. “I care first and foremost about the buidling. The only thing you can do with Bitcoin is hold it, so maxis turned that into a meme; you can Hodl aka not sell, but over on Ethereum, which has a smart contract layer, it gets more interesting because you can build code on top of the machine, so instead of Hodl we Buidl interesting projects using that technology, so our entire ecosystem of buidlers buidling their projects is the key thing and the part I'm excited about”. In this episode Peth has a talk with one of his favorite people in the space to chat about the challenges and the future of DAOs and governance. Dekan Brown is a developer and a Daoist. He's one of the founders of DAOHaus, Raid Guild and Metacartel. His work has been focused in governance and community type experiments. This time he shares the lessons and perspectives he's gained over the last three years working in the crypto space. "We are basically trying to reinvent the system and get people to think about things differently," he states. In his opinion there's the idea of digital organizations but the idea of decentralization, resiliency, robustness and anti-capture has been forgotten. Reflecting on past experiences he shares that avoiding what he calls “operational overhead”, minimizing governance and having a high-level purpose are some of the areas for improvement in DAOs. “What we should be going for is millions of different kinds of sovereign nations where every person is a citizen of maybe hundreds of thousands of other nations and, as an individual, you have the sovereignty to move wherever you want, to use your money however you want and to form in this groups and understand where the publics goods for this groups are and how are you funding them”. Ven is a designer and a general coordinator in several DAOs such as MetaCartel, DAOhaus and Raid Guild, among others. In this episode he shares his views and perspective on pioneering in DAOs and how to expand the frontiers of coordination. “One thing the community have to do is sustain itself but the other thing is to explore the frontiers”, he shares. “currently there are DAOs that are very tight circles and when people want to pioneer, they have to go outside the circle to do it, which is necessary but also creates difficulty in coordinating”. For him, instead of DAOs being a rigid structure, there need to be protocols and mechanisms within the communities for pioneers to be empowered. He believes that the future is oriented towards cross-DAO collaboration; however they need to figure out how to coordinate better before they can start coordinating across them. “We need to be able to go fast and go far together and if DAOs can do that, we can actually start doing really effective governance”. Welcome back to Crypto Sapiens. Today we are talking with Spencer Graham, aka spengrah. He is an early builder of DAOHaus, the no-code platform for creating and managing a DAO. We kick off our conversation with him sharing his crypto journey starting in late 2016, ramping up in 2017, and in 2018 co-hosting the Chicago Ethereum meetup. In 2020 he attended ETH Denver, an inflexion point in his career. Leading him to join Raid Guild. He describes joining DAOHaus, or pokemol (short for pocket Moloch) as it was called at the time, a mobile-first moloch DAO app that provided a no-code way for people to discover and create proposals, view treasuries, and summon a DAO. Eventually, a handful of people including himself developed the app into DAOHaus v2, which is the app we can all use today. We continue our chat by reviewing the DAOHaus platform and the many features that provide a rich and nuanced experience for DAO operators and members. There is a lot to unpack in this episode. I truly enjoyed my chat with Spencer, and I hope you did too. If you'd like to connect with Spencer, you can find him on Twitter @ spengrah To learn more about DAOHaus, follow them on Twitter @ nowdaoit, or go to their website daohaus.club Thanks for listening to Crypto Sapiens. In this episode, we had candid discussions with Nick about DAO governance and future trends in the DAO canvas. Nick Naraghi is the founder of Hats Protocol along with his friends Spencer Graham and David Ehrlichman - A new protocol for flexible & composable DAO-native roles ("hats") represented as NFTs. Using Hats, DAOs can delegate & revoke authorities, hold contributors accountable and create role legibility. nintynick is a DAO mechanism designer & governance facilitator. Contributor to Hats Protocol, Raid Guild, EvenGov, and groundw3rk. Formerly a developer of neurosymbolic AI algorithms.
The whole space is wrestling with the question, “What is a DAO?”. Spencer from DAOhaus has thought about this intensively and shares his definition and the reasons why he loves working for DAOs in this episode. “I realized that the thing that DAOs are really great at, or what makes them so different from traditional organizations, is that they are resistant to capture. Their coordination mechanisms and the resources that they control are not capturable by bad actors.” Some of the topics: How the broken health system pushed Spencer into the crypto rabbit hole Managing your commitment, time availability, and workload What it takes to be a DAO The problems of token governance and multi-sig solutions Integrating cultural values into technology The importance of decentralized executive power Spencer has a background in economics and psychology. After working as a product manager in the healthcare industry, he started contributing to different crypto projects like Safe DAI, and Raid Guild, until DAOhaus became his main focus. When he got into crypto, he thought this could revolutionize the healthcare system by giving patients control over their personal data that corporations, hospitals, and insurance companies have been fighting over for years. But the hierarchy and dysfunctionality made it impossible for him to do anything & for these new solutions to work properly, so he left the healthcare industry and focused on DAO tooling and infrastructure to help enable a better way of working together. In this episode of Ventures, my guests Alex Zub (https://twitter.com/theAlexZub), Spencer Graham (https://twitter.com/spengrah), and I talk about the details of day-to-day “DAO life” on DAOHaus (https://daohaus.club/). We talk specifically about how Raid Guild (https://www.raidguild.org/) - a services DAO - manages proposals, escrow, billing, and bridges to the traditional finance system. We also talk about short-term and long-term financial incentives for DAO founders/participants, how DAOs can quickly raise funds and manage risk/assurance/trust, and how newcomers to DAOs can/should think about how to participate to create maximum value for themselves and their communities.Visit https://satchel.works/@wclittle/ventures-episode-80 for detailed notes and links to resources (videos, articles, etc…) mentioned. In this episode of Ventures, a group of members from our Web 3 Product Manager Training DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) asked Spencer Graham (https://twitter.com/spengrah) a series of questions about how and why to form a DAO. We talk about practical decision-making, governance, money transfers from a central treasury to pay for services, management and accountability for DAOs operators and contractors, “on-chain” vs. “off-chain” considerations, and legal/tax/regulatory concerns.Visit https://satchel.works/@wclittle/ventures-episode-73 for detailed notes and links to resources (videos, articles, etc…) mentioned. (Raid Guild and DAOHaus)5:11 - Setting the stage for where this DAO is at, and where we should go next. Asking ourselves the question: “Is this the appropriate time to form an on-chain DAO?” // Starting with “why” and “what”7:00 - The reason to form a DAO is to take collective action with common resources.9:12 - What's stopping us from just doing this internally? Vote on discord, etc… What is the warrant to move this on-chain? 11:30 - Will has been a founder in many companies and been the person to lead the charge, open the bank account, etc... and is interested in doing this training organization a different week.12:14 - What is the currency that would be in our treasury if we formed a DAO w/ DAOHaus?12:32 - We vote on things on-chain, proposals pass, etc… how do funds get transferred? How do we have accountability that passed proposals translate to actual funds?15:08 - Question: in a traditional org there is a power dynamic where the founders control everything….how is this different in a DAO? What is fundamentally different w/ DAOs and Smart Contracts?18:37 - Off-chain vs. on-chain visual metaphor comparing DAO proposals/voting to writing and pushing code -- i.e. commits vs. pushing those commits to a central repository.21:04 - “If I'm a teacher in the DAO, I'm going to need to trust that my payment is coming to me….am I going to get nervous about it” // There are other ways to setup compensation. What is a best-practice way to pay someone who is contributing value to a DAO? “Streaming” funds to people (Super Fluid), or setting aside funds to pay someone. 22:56 - Considerations about how to practically keep performance accountability and payment movement...to keep operations moving within a DAO. Limit a smart contract so that funds either go back to DAO or to a specific address via a smart contract. Approve a few 24:39 - Regulatory, legal, & tax concerns…. questions for local government jurisdictions. Talking about employment collectives. E.g. Opolis (https://opolis.co/) ← simplifies tax issues and limits liability.26:30 - Nuts and bolts about the legal and tax issues. (referring back to Opolis)28:00 - Priya introduction and question about practical voting, voting fatigue, etc… what kind of use-case would be applicable for a DAO vs. traditional organization.31:00 - Examples of cases when DAOs are not appropriate.32:24 - Round-table, quick takeaways from this episode / conversation. Treasury management, regulatory, and storytelling.

Dan is a software developer, born and raised in Bangalore, India, who jumped into MetaGame in the summer of 2020. In his former life, he studied mathematics and computing, and went on to join Flipkart as a full stack developer. Two years of working on the security team brought some interesting and valuable learning experiences, and a bit of an ominous forecast of what his future might look like - sitting in traffic for hours to suffer through corporate arguments while working on someone else's ideas. After a backpacking trek throughout India and a psychedelic adventure, Dan decided to live radically and commit to blockchain! He learned Solidity, joined a Gitcoin hack-a-thon and started making a living with his work in the cryptospace before discovering MetaGame & Raid Guild and fully immersing. Convert to Raid Presents: The podcast for World of Warcraft and other Blizzard Games!
This week, former Blizzard lead developer Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street revealed his new gig at Riot Games. While the CtR gang were sure that was the most likely scenario, there was someone we have to thank for cracking the case -- Mr. Magoops, Cat Detective. And we’ll even play his story! Big news broke on the World of Warcraft website: digital copies of Warlords of Draenor will be available SOON™ for pre-order. And when you purchase, you’ll receive the pet, the mount, and even your free boost to 90. Blizzard also hinted that the closed beta will be coming in the next several weeks as well. While everyone is excited about this, there are some words that bring up concerns of when WoD will actually drop. Siege of Orgrimmar is getting some nerfs this week, and Lead Encounter Designer Ion Hazzikostas took to the forums to reassure raiders that these will only be targeted nerfs on several of the last encounters of the raid. Most nerfs are to smooth out progression further or help 10 man teams getting stuck on specific mechanics, and the guys give their take on why this is great news. The Convert to Raid Guild on Aerie Peak - US celebrates its first anniversary this week, and the guys give you a little more detail on some of the inner workings of the guild and how we’re able to keep it running with the help of some very special people. Of course there’s a ton more inside, so sit back, relax, and laugh along with Convert to Raid!
