In this episode Peth has a talk with one of his favorite people in the space to chat about the challenges and the future of DAOs and governance. Dekan Brown is a developer and a Daoist. He's one of the founders of DAOHaus, Raid Guild and Metacartel. His work has been focused in governance and community type experiments. This time he shares the lessons and perspectives he's gained over the last three years working in the crypto space. "We are basically trying to reinvent the system and get people to think about things differently," he states. In his opinion there's the idea of digital organizations but the idea of decentralization, resiliency, robustness and anti-capture has been forgotten. Reflecting on past experiences he shares that avoiding what he calls “operational overhead”, minimizing governance and having a high-level purpose are some of the areas for improvement in DAOs. “What we should be going for is millions of different kinds of sovereign nations where every person is a citizen of maybe hundreds of thousands of other nations and, as an individual, you have the sovereignty to move wherever you want, to use your money however you want and to form in this groups and understand where the publics goods for this groups are and how are you funding them”. Some of the topics: · DAO narrative pushed in the wrong direction · DAO Citizenship · Digital corporations vs DAOs · Token holders vs community · Treasury less DAOs · DAO governance · Burocratic ingroups and “operational overhead” · Setting a purpose and guiding principles · Minimizing governance · Seasonal leadership changes · Periods of reflection and goal setting · Voting periods and grace periods · Retroactive reviews · MolochDAO framework · DAO purism vs pragmatism · The future of DAOs Resources: Dekan Brown twitter DAOHaus twitter DAOHaus website Moloch DAO twitter Raid Guild twitter Raid Guild website MetaCartel twitter MetaCartel website --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/metagame/message

What Spencer is currently working on: DAO House v3DAO House at its essence is an app. And they are building additional applications on top of the foundational infrastructure to improve the services available at DAO House. There is the potential for new products, businesses, or even applications to operate under DAO House v3. Common Growing Pains of New DAOsPermission list environments are difficult to navigate and it can become impossible to get anything done. From an informational and social perspective, too many people on a DAO without specific priorities and jobs can spiral into chaos quickly. Full decentralization is difficult to achieve and may not be totally possible for DAOs just starting out. New DAOs should keep in mind how they will be practicing decentralization in the future, but you don't have to do that from day one. Spencer's Favorite DAO Running Tools Spencer's favorite tool would be the one he created, Hats Protocol. His tool supports the delegation of responsibility to DAO members. It supports DAOs in creating roles and assigning them to teams, sub-DAOs, or team leaders. Spencer's Favorite DAOsThe WGI DAO is focused on community builders. They are helping DAO-native communities flourish, and they are doing amazing work both within their own DAO and other DAOs. He also uses Smart Invoice which serves as a third-party billing and contract system for web3 clients. Connect with Spenderhttps://daohaus.club/https://twitter.com/spengrahConnect with Adamhttps://twitter.com/0xThrillerhttps://midao.org/

Ven is a designer and a general coordinator in several DAOs such as MetaCartel, DAOhaus and Raid Guild, among others. In this episode he shares his views and perspective on pioneering in DAOs and how to expand the frontiers of coordination. “One thing the community have to do is sustain itself but the other thing is to explore the frontiers”, he shares. “currently there are DAOs that are very tight circles and when people want to pioneer, they have to go outside the circle to do it, which is necessary but also creates difficulty in coordinating”. For him, instead of DAOs being a rigid structure, there need to be protocols and mechanisms within the communities for pioneers to be empowered. He believes that the future is oriented towards cross-DAO collaboration; however they need to figure out how to coordinate better before they can start coordinating across them. “We need to be able to go fast and go far together and if DAOs can do that, we can actually start doing really effective governance”. Some of the topics: What is a frontier of coordination in DAOs Pioneering in DAOs His key take-aways from his work within DAOs How to incentivize pioneering and coordination Growth vs sustainability His view on the future of DAOs: collaborative initiatives The use cases for protocols and platforms for DAOs and communities MetaOS Resources: Vengist Twitter MetaCartel Twitter MetaCartel website DAOHaus website DAOHaus twitter MetaGame Twitter MetaGame website --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/metagame/message

Welcome back to Crypto Sapiens. Today we are talking with Spencer Graham, aka spengrah. He is an early builder of DAOHaus, the no-code platform for creating and managing a DAO. We kick off our conversation with him sharing his crypto journey starting in late 2016, ramping up in 2017, and in 2018 co-hosting the Chicago Ethereum meetup. In 2020 he attended ETH Denver, an inflexion point in his career. Leading him to join Raid Guild. He describes joining DAOHaus, or pokemol (short for pocket Moloch) as it was called at the time, a mobile-first moloch DAO app that provided a no-code way for people to discover and create proposals, view treasuries, and summon a DAO. Eventually, a handful of people including himself developed the app into DAOHaus v2, which is the app we can all use today. We continue our chat by reviewing the DAOHaus platform and the many features that provide a rich and nuanced experience for DAO operators and members.  There is a lot to unpack in this episode. I truly enjoyed my chat with Spencer, and I hope you did too. Spencer also explains the idea of capture-resistant governance which leads us to touch on power struggles, resource management, contributor incentivization, hierarchies, and the potential of web3 to replace traditional top-down systems with flatter networks. To continue this conversation and stay up to date on all things Rehash, you can follow Diana on Twitter @ddwchen and Rehash @rehashweb3. For informational purposes only, we talk specifically about our experience launching BanyanDAO (https://www.banyandao.xyz/), how Angela advises DAOs from a legal perspective given her background and extensive professional experience in the space, and how DAOs design incentive models. More than just financial incentives (which are, of course, important), DAOs should clearly communicate with their communities about the unique opportunity of learning/building together as a scaled and decentralized team from the start. Visit https://satchel.works/@wclittle/ventures-episode-86 for detailed notes and links to resources (videos, articles, etc…) mentioned. You can watch this episode via video here.  3:29 - More info about the episode setup: Operational governance, various legal structures, and different types of incentives.4:37 - Mike shares more background of what we've done with BanyanDAO thus far.6:08 - Angela shares more background about how she's approaching the DAO space with her legal background. 8:40 - What excites Will (and others) about DAOs is that it unlocks passion in a community setting to build together. 10:08 - Operational Governance from Mike's perspective. The whole space is wrestling with the question, “What is a DAO?”. Spencer from DAOhaus has thought about this intensively and shares his definition and the reasons why he loves working for DAOs in this episode. “I realized that the thing that DAOs are really great at, or what makes them so different from traditional organizations, is that they are resistant to capture. Their coordination mechanisms and the resources that they control are not capturable by bad actors.” Some of the topics: How the broken health system pushed Spencer into the crypto rabbit hole Managing your commitment, time availability, and workload What it takes to be a DAO The problems of token governance and multi-sig solutions Integrating cultural values into technology The importance of decentralized executive power Spencer has a background in economics and psychology. After working as a product manager in the healthcare industry, he started contributing to different crypto projects like Safe DAI, and Raid Guild, until DAOhaus became his main focus. When he got into crypto, he thought this could revolutionize the healthcare system by giving patients control over their personal data that corporations, hospitals, and insurance companies have been fighting over for years. But the hierarchy and dysfunctionality made it impossible for him to do anything & for these new solutions to work properly, so he left the healthcare industry and focused on DAO tooling and infrastructure to help enable a better way of working together. How do we have accountability that passed proposals translate to actual funds?15:08 - Question: in a traditional org there is a power dynamic where the founders control everything….how is this different in a DAO?  What is fundamentally different w/ DAOs and Smart Contracts?18:37 - Off-chain vs. on-chain visual metaphor comparing DAO proposals/voting to writing and pushing code -- i.e. commits vs. pushing those commits to a central repository.21:04 - “If I'm a teacher in the DAO, I'm going to need to trust that my payment is coming to me….am I going to get nervous about it” // There are other ways to setup compensation. What is a best-practice way to pay someone who is contributing value to a DAO?  “Streaming” funds to people (Super Fluid), or setting aside funds to pay someone.  22:56 - Considerations about how to practically keep performance accountability and payment movement...to keep operations moving within a DAO. Dekan is a Solidity developer & web3 shadowy super coder extraordinaire. He's a lead at DAOhaus, a project dedicated to giving people the functionality to make DAOs run. In this episode Chair, unfortunately with no side of pork, catches Dekan in the wake of MCON and the two discuss reflections on web3's past, and expectations for the next 2 years. Dekan is a beacon of knowledge and experience in web3 development. He's been building since days when every app had its own wallet, and DAO memberships & ephemeral keys were kept in local storage. He watched as web3 development moved from a nerdy space of devs passionate about privacy, encryption & decentralization to the land of UI/UX design, NFTs, defi opportunities and expansive communities. Short & sweet, this conversation w Chair & Dekan dives into assessments of this evolution and the importance of preserving early web3 values. Some of the topics: Web3 app hiccups in 2018 DAO cultural shifts as UX designers & artists entering the space Defi & apeing in Spam NFT phishing Non-technical roles Encryption and privacy Cross-DAO integration As a well sought-after Solidity dev, Dekan emphasizes that the foundation of web3 is decentralization, encryption & privacy. We're trying to build more than just “web2.5”, and he recognizes that “non-technical people still have to make a cognitive leap into this world of thinking about things using the blockchain and smart contracts”. The conversation concludes with a discussion of DAO collaboration projects and awesome tech. They touch on instances of using sidechain vote logic and DAO membership to control mainnet funds and take advantage of massive liquidity. It's an episode you don't want to miss!
