According to Rebecca Lester, the author of “Famished: Eating Disorders and Failed Care in America,” eating disorders are among the most misunderstood medical conditions. For instance, she says there is an assumption that eating disorders are mostly a problem for upper-middle-class white girls. While that’s not completely untrue, it’s just a sliver of the story. In “Famished,” Lester looks closely at the impact of common misconceptions, as well as the way the health care system fails to treat these disorders.

With the holidays comes many social gatherings that are often centred around food. For some this may be filled with joy, but for others, this may cause a lot of stress and anxiety around eating or body image. That’s why this week, I’m speaking with Dr. Andrea LaMarre on eating disorder recovery and health ay any size. Based out of Guelph, Ontario, Andrea is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Propel Centre for Population Health Impact at the University of Waterloo. She recently earned her PhD at the University of Guelph, where she studied eating disorder recovery from the perspectives of people in recovery and their supporters. In this episode we speak about experiences of eating disorders and recovery, and Andrea breaks down some of the common assumptions surrounding these experiences – about what an eating disorder looks like conventionally, what bodies and experiences are legitimized and which are often left out, and ways in which researchers like her are challenging the social, cultural, and psychological barriers to accessing recovery. She’s doing incredibly important work with thoughtful and engaging approaches for communities, and I think it’s important to speak more to the diverse ways disordered eating can manifest in our lives and bodies - particularly during times of the year where we have less control or agency over what we eat. In this episode, I welcome my colleague and good friend Rebecca Lester on to the podcast. Rebecca and I crossed paths while working together at Soul 7 – Mindful Healing Technologies here in Toronto. I have learnt so much while working with her and in this episode, you will get a taste of some of the wisdom Rebecca has acquired along her journey of energy healing, travelling, sustainable living and frequency therapy. The world of energy healing is something that I have opened up to since moving to Toronto and while working at Soul7. It requires an immense amount of inner awareness to notice the subtle shifts in energy that go on all around us. Bec is incredibly tuned into herself and makes her decisions in life based on her ability to notice energetic shifts from within. I believe this is a vital skill to develop, something that I am still working on, that can guide you in the direction the universe/god/spirit/awareness is calling you to go.   In this episode we discuss: How Rebecca’s interest in spirituality, science and energy healing began How travelling can connect us with something greater than our self Rebecca’s advice for people considering world travel on a budget Why Rebecca is volunteering at an organic farm How to connect with the earth’s energy and why it’s important The benefits of PEMF therapy Why it’s important to start seeing the world in terms of energy, frequency and vibration Why cultivating realize our connection with awareness How to ask the universe for what you want The impact yoga can have on opening up space for awareness to expand
