Last week Carney and Eby committed up to $3.2 billion to buy 2,200+ empty Vancouver condos and stop prices from falling. I'm a BC mortgage broker, and I walk through what the money actually does, who it helps and who gets nothing, how we've done this before, the immigration and rate cuts that really caused the glut, where prices could go through 2028, and whether you should be buying right now.
This summer, we're sharing re-released episodes of rabble radio from our archives as we mark 25 years of rabble.ca. New interviews will return in September. This week's re-released episode takes us back to November 2009 with a segment from episode 94 of rabble radio. In this archival feature, we revisit a conversation originally broadcast by Red Eye—the long-running progressive podcast that was a staple of rabble's podcast network. The interview features David Eby, then, the executive director of the BC Civil Liberties Association and now the premier of British Columbia, discussing the province's controversial plans to displace Vancouver's unhoused population ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. As Vancouver takes the global stage once again, this time for the FIFA World Cup, looking back at Eby's sharp critiques of state displacement feels incredibly informative—and perhaps a little hypocritical. We also look back at a vital conversation for Pride Month. Meagan Perry speaks with Arthur Kisenyi about the legislative landscape for queer people in Uganda. Unfortunately, in the years since this interview first aired, Uganda has passed even harsher laws, making it one of the most dangerous places in the world to be queer. It's a reminder of how much is at stake, and how the fight for global queer liberation continues.

Ep 603 - More Permits, Less Talk Guest: Todd Stone, Association for Mineral Exploration BC By Stuart McNish It's taken two years of fast-talking about fast-tracking mining permits in British Columbia to get started. On April 1, 2026, the BC government promised to approve exploration permits within 40 to 140 days, depending on project complexity. If the permit isn't processed on time, it will be escalated to the chief permitting officer, who must make a decision within 14 days. It's a part of Premier Eby's response to economic uncertainty caused by US President Donald Trump. Eby stated, “It is time to build again and we don't have a moment to waste.” He continued, “We cannot allow slow permitting processes and bureaucratic processes to delay what we know has to happen.” It's a good start, says Todd Stone, the President of the Association for Mineral Exploration BC. However, Stone says, “Only 14.8% of mining exploration claims were processed within 120 days over the past year.” According to the AME, “BC's new Mineral Claim Staking System has created a growing backlog.” As of March 25, 2026, the AME says only 1,400 applications had been approved, while another four thousand and four hundred applications are pending. We invited Todd Stone, the President and CEO of the Association of Mineral Exploration BC, to join us for a Conversation That Matters about our ability to seize the moment in mining. This week on Open Sources Guelph, it's a lot. There was another disaster involving guns in America, but this time the target was some of the most powerful people in the country. Here in Canada, the Premier of B.C. seems to have stepped in a deep puddle with Indigenous people, but perhaps we can find some salvation with a good economy news story? Out special guest this week will help us make sense of that last one. This Thursday, April 30, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: My Dinner With Decay. Saturday's White House Correspondence Dinner was broken up by sadly familiar American tradition of its own, an attempted mass shooting. The WHCD, or "nerd prom" is a big deal for a certain upper echelon of Washington, and it was super special this year with Donald Trump himself making an appearance. From the conspiracies about false flags to commentary about the self-importance of the event, we need to ask the question: Will we ever learn? DRIPA-Lash. In the span of a month, British Columbia Premier David Eby went from on the attack to full retreat. After a court found that the government's mineral claim was inconsistent with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. Eby proposed amending the act to allow the project to proceed, but First Nations leaders in the province called it an "absolute betrayal". Eby eventually backed off, but what does this do for the cause of reconciliation? Spring Bling! On Tuesday, the Government of Canada unveiled the spring economic update and it was a good news story! The deficit for this year, and the unemployment rate, are slightly less than what we thought they were going to be. Cool. There were announcements too: more money for skills development in the trades, more investment in national sport, and something called a sovereign wealth fund(?!). David-Alexandre Brassard, chief economist of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada returns to lend his insights. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

This week on the podcast, Peter and Jackie are joined by Stewart Muir, President and CEO of Resource Works, a leading voice in Canada's natural resource sector with a focus on British Columbia. Peter and Jackie open the episode with a discussion of the latest geopolitical developments, including escalating tensions involving Iran and the resulting volatility in oil prices over the weekend, as the Strait of Hormuz opened and then quickly closed. They also review the news of Prime Minister Mark Carney's newly elected majority government, what it could mean for energy policy, and his recent video address, “Forward Guidance with Prime Minister Mark Carney.” The conversation then shifts to British Columbia, where Stewart provides insight into the province's current political landscape, starting with the controversy surrounding proposed changes to B.C.'s United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) and Premier Eby's unexpected decision not to proceed with them. Peter and Jackie also ask Stewart: Will the Major Project Office (MPO) help advance final investment decisions (FIDs) amid ongoing uncertainty around DRIPA? Is the B.C. government's proposed royalty increase hurting the competitiveness of LNG projects and investment? Is there potential for B.C. to weaken its greenhouse gas policies to better align with federal-provincial agreements, including elements of the Alberta–Canada MOU? What is the current level of support for oil pipeline development in B.C., including among Premier Eby and Indigenous communities, particularly along the northern route?
