Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary TimeThe song, How Can I Keep from Singing by Pauline T & Robert Lowry, speaks poetically about the song of hope we carry as human beings. A hope not just for a better tomorrow, but one in which the Lord is walking with us through the ups and downs of life. When the man in today's Gospel was blessed to receive his hearing and speech back, it is the gift of faith to hear and speak the word God. What song brings hope to you? Can you be kept from singing?Scripture Reading for September 8, 2024Isaiah 35:4-7Psalm 146:7-10James 2:1-5Mark 7:31-37

Opening Song: “Kingdom of God” (https://open.spotify.com/track/2jneHgyd1uUIfk7eVhqmDK?si=a120ed3f201844b4) by Jon Guerra Lyrics: Kingdom of God Oh that I could see your face How I'm longing for the day Brighter sun of holy grace Make my heart a holy place Blessed are the poor who have nothing to own Blessed are the mourners who are crying alone Blessed are the guilty who have nowhere to go For their hearts have a road to the kingdom of God And their souls are the songs of the kingdom of God And they will find a refuge for theirs in the kingdom of God Beauty shining from your face Always longed to see this place Is there somewhere I can stay? Even just a couple days? Blessed are the poor who have nothing to own Blessed are the mourners who are crying alone Blessed are the guilty who have nowhere to go For their hearts have a road to the kingdom of God And their souls are the songs of the kingdom of God And they will find a refuge for theirs in the kingdom of God The Lord is our shepherd, we shall not want In valley or pasture, we shall not want Our cup runneth over and over For now and forever For now and forever Passage: Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him. 3 This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent — Jesus Christ. 4 I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 Now, Father, glorify me in your presence with that glory I had with you before the world existed. 6 “I have revealed your name to the people you gave me from the world. They were yours, you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you, 8 because I have given them the words you gave me. They have received them and have known for certain that I came from you. They have believed that you sent me. 9 “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me, because they are yours. 10 Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. -- John 17:1-11 (CSB) Musical Reflection: I Need Thee Every Hour (NEED) by Robert Lowry Reflection Notes: Each stanza of this familiar hymn was written by Annie Hawks as part of a poem. When she showed the composition to her pastor, Robert Lowry, he added the refrain and set the text to music for their congregation to enjoy. The musical lines always tend upward before falling back down, an apt parallel to the textual pleas reaching up to God. Prayer: O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Opening Song: O Lord, open our lips and our mouths will declare Your praise. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen. The Scripture for today is John 12:20-33. Let's prepare our hearts to hear from God's word as we listen to Son of Suffering by Aaron Moses, David Funk, Matt Redman, and Nate Moore, sung by Jekalyn Car and the Mav City Gospel Choir. Jazz organ and unison ensemble singing immediately set the tone for this song. The passionate voices, inspired improvisations, and call-and-response motives are all characteristic of the gospel style and elicit a specific emotional response. Lyrics: Oh the perfect Son of God In all His innocence Here walking in the dirt with you and me He knows what living is He's acquainted with our grief A man of sorrows Son of suffering Blood and tears how can it be (That) there's a God who weeps There's a God who bleeds Oh praise the One Who would reach for me Hallelujah to the Son of suffering Some imagine You are distant and removed But You chased us down in merciful pursuit To the sinner You were grace And the broken You embraced And in the end the proof is in Your wounds Yes in the end the proof is in Your wounds Your cross my freedom Your stripes my healing All praise King Jesus Glory to God in Heaven Your blood still speaking Your love still reaching All praise King Jesus Glory to God forever Glory to God forever Glory to God forever Glory to God forever (Glory to God forever) Hallelujah to the Son of suffering All praise King Jesus All praise King Jesus All praise King Jesus Glory to God forever All praise King Jesus All praise King Jesus All praise King Jesus Glory to God forever Passage: 20 Now some Greeks were among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 So they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces much fruit. 25 The one who loves his life will lose it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me. Where I am, there my servant also will be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. 27 “Now my soul is troubled. What should I say — Father, save me from this hour? But that is why I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus responded, “This voice came, not for me, but for you. 31 Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 As for me, if I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this to indicate what kind of death he was about to die. -- John 12:20-33 (CSB) Musical Reflection: I Need Thee Every Hour (NEED) by Robert Lowry Reflection Notes: Each stanza of this familiar hymn was written by Annie Hawks as part of a poem. Crosby goes through many examples of places and feelings in which her savior led her gracefully through and the song is an expression of our faith in Christ to lead us.

Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose. 13 His soul shall abide in well-being, and his offspring shall inherit the land. 14 The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant. Perpetual stress and surge, in league together, make long, O long, this life, this business of living. Grappling with foes within and foes without, my soul has lost its beauty, blurred your image. Did ever oak such buffeting from winds or ship receive from waves as I do now? Labor to labor, task succeeds to task. . . . Friendship has bowed and illness wasted me. . . . Do not forsake me, my Strength, I beseech you. When the storms beat hard I may have betrayed you, but let me return to you now. -Gregory of Nazianzus

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles 5 These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'[c] 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers,[d] cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. 9 Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics[e] or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. 11 And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. 12 As you enter the house, greet it. 13 And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. 15 Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father'? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. Opening Song: Press On (https://open.spotify.com/track/0Bl7WcuYmub3o7vJqd9xqA?si=637a42361e944bff) by Ben Shive and Kristyn Getty Lyrics: Where two or three are gathered In the name of the Lord He is here He is here in our midst And we will sing together Be renewed by the Word When we part may we go in His peace Press on all you saints Press on till the end Christ with us ever with us Until He comes again Press on all you saints Run and run to win Christ with us ever with us Until He comes again Now let the Word be scattered Llike the seed on the soil Day by day Watch it grow in His care And may you be a shelter As you reach to the lost Glad in hope calm in pain true in prayer And may He find us waiting With our lamps burning still Keeping watch through the night Til He comes For soon it will be morning And the sun will appear Christ who brought us this far Brings us home Oh until He comes again Passage: But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Musical Reflection: I Need Thee Every Hour (NEED) by Robert Lowry Reflection Notes: Each stanza of this familiar hymn was written by Annie Hawks as part of a poem. When she showed the composition to her pastor, Robert Lowry, he added the refrain and set the text to music for their congregation to enjoy. The musical lines always tend upward before falling back down, an apt parallel to the textual pleas reaching up to God. Prayer: Most loving Father, whose will it is for us to give thanks for all things, to fear nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on you who care for us: Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested to us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Opening Song:  Psalm 34 (Taste and See) by Joe Rigney and Shane Barnard Lyrics: I sought the Lord and He answered me And delivered me from every fear Those who look on Him are radiant They'll never be ashamed They'll never be ashamed   This poor man cried and the Lord heard me And saved me from my enemies The Son of God surrounds His saints He will deliver them He will deliver them   Magnify the Lord with me Come exalt His name together Glorify the Lord with me Come exalt His name forever   O taste and see that the Lord is good O blessed is he who hides in Him O fear the Lord O all you saints He'll give you everything He'll give you everything   Let us bless the Lord Every day and night Never ending praise May our incense rise Passage:  Taste and See That the Lord Is Good [a] Of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away. 34 I will bless the Lord at all times;     his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord;     let the humble hear and be glad. 3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,     and let us exalt his name together!   4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me     and delivered me from all my fears. 5 Those who look to him are radiant,     and their faces shall never be ashamed. 6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him     and saved him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of the Lord encamps     around those who fear him, and delivers them.   8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!     Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! 9 Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,     for those who fear him have no lack! 10 The young lions suffer want and hunger;     but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.   11 Come, O children, listen to me;     I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12 What man is there who desires life     and loves many days, that he may see good? 13 Keep your tongue from evil     and your lips from speaking deceit. 14 Turn away from evil and do good;     seek peace and pursue it.   15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous     and his ears toward their cry. 16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,     to cut off the memory of them from the earth. 17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears     and delivers them out of all their troubles. 18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted     and saves the crushed in spirit.   19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,     but the Lord delivers him out of them all. 20 He keeps all his bones;     not one of them is broken. 21 Affliction will slay the wicked,     and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. 22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;     none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned. Musical Reflection:  Nothing But The Blood (PLAINFIELD) by Robert Lowry Reflection Notes:  Lowry wrote several hymns for his congregation's use in the late nineteenth century. This particular tune is pentatonic (only five notes used per octave) and falls within a small vocal range, which made it accessible for all parishioners to sing and enjoy.  Prayer:  O Lord, you have mercy upon all—take away from me my sins, and mercifully kindle in me the fire of your Holy Spirit. Take away from me the heart of stone, and give me a heart of flesh, a heart to love and adore you, a heart to delight in you, to follow and to enjoy you, for Christ's sake. Amen. Ambrose

Opening Song: O Lord, open our lips and our mouths will declare Your praise. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen. The Scripture for today is 1 Corinthians 1:1-9. Let's prepare our hearts to hear from God's word as we listen to Grace and Peace by Joel Sczebel. Smooth, contoured phrases form the verses of this song. At first, the choruses are sung in quiet wonder, but driving drums and electric guitars build in a joyful crescendo. The voices jump an octave higher and sing the text in full voice: “what an amazing mystery that Your grace has come to me.” Lyrics: Grace and peace oh how can this be For lawbreakers and thieves For the worthless the least You have said that our judgment is death For all eternity without hope without rest Oh what an amazing mystery What an amazing mystery That Your grace has come to me Grace and peace oh how can this be The matchless King of all Paid the blood price for me Slaughtered Lamb what atonement You bring The vilest sinner's heart Can be cleansed can be free Grace and peace oh how can this be Let songs of gratefulness Ever rise never cease Loved by God and called as a saint My heart is satisfied In the riches of Christ Oh what an amazing love I see What an amazing love I see That Your grace has come to me Passage: Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes, 2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Thanksgiving 4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, 5 that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— 6 even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— 7 so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Prayer: Merciful Lord, the comforter and teacher of your faithful people, increase in your church the desires which you have given, and confirm the hearts of those who hope in you by enabling them to understand the depth of your promises, that all your adopted children may even now behold, with the eyes of faith, and patiently wait for, the light which as yet you do not openly manifest; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” 7 But the Lord said to me,   “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth'; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.”   9 Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me,   “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.” Musical Reflection:  I Need Thee Every Hour (NEED) by Robert Lowry Reflection Notes:  Each stanza of this familiar hymn was written by Annie Hawks as part of a poem. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.

He was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3 And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Musical Reflection: I Need Thee Every Hour (NEED) by Robert Lowry Reflection Notes: Each stanza of this familiar hymn was written by Annie Hawks as part of a poem.
