The Jazz Show takes a side-step this long weekend from its usual programming, Host Blind Mango Chutney calling a Rock Jazz theme. Blind Mango invites local vinyl collector Johnny Dambuster as special guest Selector —with the Rock Jazz theme being a much talked about concept between Blind Mango & the Dambuster for quite some time. The pair have a blast taking a deep dive & a somewhat wild ride into the Rock-Jazz milieu. First selections come from the early Rock' n' Roll period with key vocalists Big Mama Thornton & Big Maybelle. Things get a tad trippy with psychedelic selections from Hendrix, Les Paul, & Blood Sweat & Tears, unfolding later with some unlikely surprises, as Dambuster unearths some buried nuggets from Alice Cooper, Snakefinger (the Residents), & Throbbing Gristle. Plus The MC5 enter for a totally Sonic moment! - (It's all about the track's epic Drum intro, & the Saxophones mid track folks!). Blind Mango knocks it into the End-Zone with essential tracks from King Crimson, John McLaughlin, & Larry Coryell, ending the show on a total high with Charlie Hunter's great version of Nirvana's Come as You Are — all making for an eclectic, & indeed an *electric* mix of Rock-Jazz Vibes with a busy text machine keeping the Crew busy with ppl diggin' the show's selections. (A part 2 perhaps, guys?) DJ Sassy pops in to host the Jazz Gig Guide, & adds a refreshing beverage twist — & Miss Dom to present the Vinyl Fair Guide. Rock on Folks! We were devastated when we heard of Nikki Giovanni's passing earlier this week. Her poetry evokes life on Earth and in the universe in such a beautiful, thoughtful and inclusive way. We are in the process of sharing our favorite episodes from the past and felt it was fitting to bring you back our QueerSpace episode featuring Nikki among other futurist artists.  When researching QueerSpace, we repeatedly saw creators blending themes of space and themes of queerness in their art. Many of these artists use their art to envision new futures. Futurist thinking uses the experience of the past and present to contextualize and reimagine what the future could be, often creating a future that's more equitable and radically different than what we have now. Thanks to our guests in this Episode: Nikki Giovanni, Futurist Artist Lola Flash, Futurist Artist Stamatina Gregory, Chief Curator and Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art AirSpace Season 10 is just around the corner! He reminisces about his early days of tech adoption as a young music producer, from Moog synthesizers to digital samplers and drum machines, emphasizing how he learned these tools came with an ideology of their own. He got played, before he played them. Charlie suggests AI is no different. Highlighting AI's involvement in a Beatles' song revival, Charlie drops a C.S. Join Carl and historian and professional musician Dr. Christopher Brellochs for a tour through the musical influences of the Gilded Age. Music in the Gilded Age incorporated many different styles and influences from the classical symphonies and operas brought to American concert halls and stages from Europe to more home grown music that included military influenced music as well as music that reflected the fusion of cultural influences like ragtime.   Dr. Brellochs shares insight into just what Gilded Age audiences were tapping their feet to and where they were going to hear music from the brand new Carnegie Hall in 1891 to the opening of the Metropolitan Opera in 1883.   This episode covers some American composers that you might not know including John Knowles Paine who was tremendously influential in the Gilded Age and nearly forgotten today.  And just to give some special perspective Dr. Brellochs played the role of John Knowles Paine in an episode of HBO's first season of "The Gilded Age".   We also discuss the popularization of a new instrument - the saxophone - which Dr. Brellochs has called a Gilded Age "coming of age story".

Synopsis The saxophone—whose flashing serpentine figure is now virtually synonymous with jazz clubs and wind bands—was the brainchild of woodwind craftsman Adolphe Sax, born in Belgium on this date in 1814, to a family of prominent instrument makers. Sax moved to Paris in his late 20's, where he proved himself a restless and prolific inventor of new instruments. Yet only a few of these lived on, of which the saxophone is by far the most popular. John Philip Sousa's band gave many audiences in this country their first taste of the saxophone, and its important role in jazz can hardly be overestimated—that's a development that neither Sax nor Sousa could have foreseen. In the symphonic repertory, saxophones are still just occasional visitors to the concert hall, but in the world of chamber music, saxophone quartets have become quite popular. In America alone there are dozens of professional saxophone quartets who commission and perform new works. Take, for example, the “Quartet for Saxophones” by the Canadian composer Anita “A.D.” Perry, a work written for the Amherst Saxophone Quartet of Buffalo, New York. The Amherst Quartet has a 20-year history of commissioning and performing new music, and has recorded a number of compact discs, include one of Perry's quartet. This week, members of the Cleveland State University Jazz Faculty get together to collaborate on original compositions and generally just jam. We've featured all four performers in their own groups previously, but this week it's a change to hear four educators and band leaders collaborate.  Featuring Dan Bruce on Guitar, Chris Vance on Bass, Bill Ransom on Drums and John Perrine on Saxophones, from January 21st, 2022 it's the Cleveland State University Jazz Faculty – Live at the Bop Stop. This program is recorded at the Robert Conrad Studios at the Bop Stop in Cleveland, Ohio with additional production by Graham Rosen and editing for WOBC and WNPA provided by Dr. Pete Naegele and for our podcast and other affiliates by Shawn Gilbert and Carsen Gilbert at GilAzar media.   The Executive Producer is Daniel Peck.  For extended version of all our shows –our Live at The Bop Stop podcast can be found on your favorite podcast app.  Want to Support The Bop Stop?  Donate here! We're watching Lethal Weapon 3, recalling Encino Man and guessing just what the hell Poison Ivy and Aliens 3 were all about. Saxophones that follow you around, high school cave men and prison islands. Man, the 90s were fun.

Since then, he has chosen the road less travelled, performing in Thailand with the free jazz group ‘Honk Wail and Moan', in maximum security prisons as part of a USO group and with Barry White. Chris is everywhere. In fact, if you've purchased an American Greetings musical greeting card recently, odds are pretty good the music in that card was performed by Chris. One of his favorite ensembles is a group he calls The CB5 and we were lucky to have them join us for a show in front of a sold out audience. Featuring Chris on Saxophones, Kip Reed on Bass, Bobby Ferraza on Guitar, Dave Thomas on Piano and Reggie Jackson on Drums and from November 4th, 2021 it's The CB5 – Live at the Bop Stop. Anyone who's observed the Milky Way or has seen a beautiful Hubble image can understand how space and space imagery can be a source of creative inspiration. In this episode of QueerSpace, Stamatina Gregory from the Leslie-Lohman Museum helps to contextualize the origins of this intersection of space, queerness, and futurism in art. And we hear from photographer Lola Flash and poet Nikki Giovanni on their art, inspiration, and visions of the future. QueerSpace is made possible by the generous support of Olay. Saxophones perform in orchestras (on a limited basis), concert, jazz, polka, jazz combos, ska, punk and rock, and roll bands. As you can see saxophones perform in all sorts of groups...
