Dressed Not to Kill

Dressed Not to Kill

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 22, 2025 68:05

Under hösten och vintern visades utställningen Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion på Design Museum i London.

I first met Roksanda in 2006. We were selling her flat in King's Cross, which was unlike anything I'd seen before: a brooding space with cast-concrete worktops, a black resin floor and mirrored lightwells. It had a subterranean lap-pool that was completely black, like a cave, where one could imagine Bruce Wayne practising his backstroke. Roksanda had recently shown her first collection at London Fashion Week and garments dangled enticingly from rails in her workspace. Some 18 years later, I've come to meet her in her studio in the East End to record this podcast. As before, her latest collection is on display, only this time the hanging rails have multiplied by a factor of a hundred. The colours are even more vibrant. Roksanda is no longer simply a name; it's a brand with a global following.I loved finding out more about Roksanda's life story. She talks passionately about the importance of nature in her life, from the old quince trees in her grandparents' garden to the inside-out living of her favourite Modernist houses in Brazil. She describes how the birth of her daughter was like a portal opening up, which gave her new confidence and a sense of perspective. She tells me about how she's managed to bring architecture into fashion, and why she believes that clothes are there to provide shelter and protection in the same way that a home does.Thank you so much for listening, as always, and I really hope you enjoy it!This episode was recorded in person at Roksanda's East London studio. Balachko is 3-headed giant from European mythology especially in the Serbian region. The character is said to be mainly influenced by the folklore and stories from Russian traditions although Slavic legends also talk about a three headed monster who frequently created trouble for the humans. He was under the rule of Mihailo, the king of Leđane. He was killed by the Serbian hero Miloš Vojinović when he tried to kidnap princess Roksanda, the bride of Tsar Dušan. This tale was told in the Serbian epic poem "Tsar Dušan's wedding"Balachko was known to have 3 heads with distinct facial features. Each of the three heads had their own functions and usually functioned independently of each other. He was also depicted as being very tall and muscular in nature. Various depictions have also shown the Balachko to be a potbellied and slow creature.Read more at https://mythlok.com/balachko/

Education For AllLockdown was hard for everyone but what we don’t hear about are the stories of those who faced starvation and destitution, simply because they couldn’t go to school. This was the situation faced by students of the Malaika school in the Democratic Republic of Congo only a few months ago. The school, founded 13 yrs by model and philanthropist Noella Coursaris Musunka provides a free and holistic education to 370 girls from the ages of 5-18. Before the school, the village had no water, electricity or healthcare, but since then it not only has a school and community centre, but 20 wells providing clean water. As well as this they provide sports programmes, adult vocational skills and IT classes to around 5200 people. So you can see that this is a much needed and impactful programme.Women Supporting WomenPost lockdown there is a lot of work to be done. Malaika have partnered with rental platform Hurr to raise much needed awareness and funds for the school and community. I was incredibly lucky to get to speak to Noella and Victoria, the CEO and Co Founder of Hurr on the day the campaign launched. Wear to Care offers renters an opportunity to rent pieces donated by incredible celebrities including Helena Christensen, Thandie Newton, June Sarpong, Eve and Natalia Vodianova, as well as brands such as Vilshenko, Roland Mouret and Roksanda. All the money raised goes directly to the school. Not only that but Hurr are using the amazing community that they have fostered around their peer to peer rental service to encourage women to sponsor girls at the school. The campaign seeks to highlight the power of female friendship and the importance of empowering each other through knowledge, finance and holistic support. We all know that when young girls are given these things, their potential to thrive is improved exponentially.
