On the 130th episode of the What is a Good Life? podcast, I'm delighted to welcome our guest, Ella Fryer-Smith. Ella is the founder of Do You Research, an agency established with the intention of drawing on over 15 years of research experience, collaborating with the amazing researchers she has met along the way, and maintaining a clear focus on inclusion to deliver exceptional research, consultancy, and training. Specialising in qualitative research methods, particularly film ethnography, her work has taken her around the world—observing people's everyday lives and exploring everything from toilet roll and white goods to how people manage their money. She has also helped policymakers navigate the future of health services and travel. Ella is the Vice Chair of the Association of Qualitative Researchers (AQR) board and sits on the Market Research Society (MRS) Social Inclusion Group. In this engaging conversation, Ella shares her journey of embracing uncertainty and the paradox of confidence in admitting what we don't know. We explore the importance of presence in parenting, the significance of her parents as role models, freedom within constraints, and the need for research to reflect the voices of the unheard. For me, this discussion really emphasises the significance of lived experience in understanding—and truly seeing—each other. For more of Ella's work, check out the following:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ella-fryer-smith-91281723/Website: https://www.doyou-research.com/Contact me at mark@whatisagood.life if you'd like to explore your own lines of self-inquiry through 1-on-1 coaching, take part in my 5-week What is a Good Life? group courses, discuss experiences I create to stimulate greater trust, communication, and connection, amongst your leadership teams, or you simply want to get in touch.- For the What is a Good Life? podcast's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@whatisagoodlife/videos- My newsletter: https://www.whatisagood.life/- My LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mccartney-14b0161b4/- Exploring one-on-one coaching: https://www.whatisagood.life/p/one-on-one-coaching- What is a Good Life? Dissecting the world of private debt, particularly in the context of property development. For this interesting topic, I had the honour of sharing the room with Matt Crowe, CFO of Bowery Capital. A powerhouse himself he explained the nuances of private debt, its advantages over traditional bank lending, and the evolving landscape of non-bank lenders in great detail. Our conversation highlighted the importance of speed and expertise in financing property developments, the security offered to investors, and the growing interest in private debt as an investment option. Together, we also addressed common misconceptions about private lenders and the risks associated with different types of debt financing. The focus of this 60th episode of Edinburgh Film Podcast is Wanda, the only feature film directed by American actor-filmmaker Barbara Loden. Released in 1970, the film is set in rural Pennsylvania and tells of a working class woman (Loden) who leaves her husband and young children for a life on the road. She eventually drifts into a fraught, uneasy relationship with petty thief Norman Dennis (Michael Higgins) as he plans a bank robbery. Joining host Dr Pasquale Iannone to talk about Wanda is Dr Elena Gorfinkel, author of a new book on the film which is part of the long-running BFI Film Classics series. Elena is Reader in Film Studies at King's College London. Specialising in underground and independent cinema, her many publications include the 2017 volume Lewd Looks: American Sexploitation Cinema in the 1960s. Her articles and book chapters include pieces on filmmakers such as Andy Warhol, Doris Wishman, Kira Muratova and Kelly Reichardt. Elena is also the curator of a major season currently running at London's BFI Southbank titled Wanda and Beyond: The World of Barbara Loden. In their detailed, wide-ranging conversation, Elena tells Pasquale about her first encounter with Wanda and how she approached the writing of her new book. Discussion then moves on to the film itself, before turning to the curation process for the BFI Loden season. Wanda (2025) is published by Bloomsbury and is out now. The BFI Southbank season Wanda and Beyond: The World of Barbara Loden runs throughout the month of June. For more details, please see the BFI website.

Specialising in capturing the raw emotion and beauty of a couple's most important day, she's built a reputation for her ability to document moments that feel both timeless and deeply personal.Though weddings are the heart of her business and her primary focus, Amy also enjoys stepping into other areas of photography, including family portraits and branding work. These sessions allow her to explore different dynamics and creative challenges, keeping her inspired and constantly evolving as an artist.Throughout the growth of her business—through trial, error, and plenty of learning—Amy has remained grounded in one core belief: that photography is about so much more than just images. For her, it's about capturing the true essence of people and the connections between them. That intention has guided her from the very beginning and continues to be the foundation of everything she does.
