DESCRIPTION:In this episode, Tem explores why teacher self-regulation is essential, how our responses can either escalate or de-escalate situations, and the powerful role trauma-informed practice plays in creating supportive learning environments. Drawing on real classroom experiences, she shares practical insights into building positive relationships, promoting resilience, and helping students develop the self-belief they need to thrive both in school and beyond. Whether you're a trainee teacher, early career teacher or experienced educator, this episode will encourage you to reflect on the hidden lessons your students learn from you every day.If you would like to enquire about trauma-informed training, please contact Tem at tem@helpingteachersthrive.com or book a call: https://calendly.com/tem-helpingteachersthrive/60 KEY TAKEAWAYS:The way teachers respond to students can either strengthen relationships and trust or contribute to conflict and escalation.Self-regulation is a vital skill for educators because calm adults are better able to support and co-regulate dysregulated students.Trauma-informed practice helps teachers understand the root causes of behaviour and respond with empathy rather than judgement.Consistently using positive language can build students' confidence, self-esteem and belief in their own potential.Teaching resilience, mindset and positive self-talk equips students with lifelong skills that extend far beyond academic achievement.BEST MOMENTS:"You will talk to yourself in your head more than you'll talk to anybody else your entire life. So be kind.""We need to look within ourselves before we respond to our students.""When our students are dysregulated, we need to remain calm so that we can then co-regulate for them.""Trauma-informed practice is all about instilling in children the belief that they are enough, that they are capable, and that they are valued.""We want to instil belief and confidence in our students so that they can feel like they can achieve anything going forwards in life."VALUABLE RESOURCES:https://patreon.com/thehelpingteachersthrivehub?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLinkEPISODES TO CHECK OUT NEXT:https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/empathy-in-education-how-words-shape-student-behaviour/id1681843058?i=1000745971878ABOUT THE HOST:Since embarking on her teaching journey in 2009, Tem has been on a mission to empower students to reach their fullest potential. DESCRIPTION:What if the most important thing you teach this year isn't on your scheme of work? In this episode of Helping Teachers Thrive, Tem shares a recent conversation with a student that completely stopped her in her tracks and reminded her why teaching matters so much. As educators, we're often consumed by data, accountability, behaviour, assessments and workload. It's easy to measure grades. It's easy to measure progress. But what about the impact we have that can't be measured? The lessons students carry with them long after they've forgotten the content. If you've ever questioned whether you're making a difference, felt overwhelmed by the pressures of teaching, or wondered if your efforts are truly having an impact, this episode is for you.If you would like to enquire about trauma-informed training, please contact Tem at tem@helpingteachersthrive.com or book a call: https://calendly.com/tem-helpingteachersthrive/60KEY TAKEAWAYS:One comment can completely change your perspectiveWhy some of the most important lessons aren't found in any specificationWhat students really remember about their time in schoolHow the hidden curriculum shapes future adultsWhy connection matters more than we sometimes realiseBEST MOMENTS: "When we're drowning in workload, data, marking and accountability pressures, it's really easy to forget that some of the most important things that we teach aren't even measured.""Students don't always tell us straight away. They don't always say thank you. They don't always recognise the impact we're having.""Many won't even remember the lesson we taught. They'll remember the confidence we built within them, the belief we gave them, the resilience we helped them develop, and the life lessons we taught along the way.""Sometimes all it takes is that one comment from a student to remind us why what we do really matters."VALUABLE RESOURCES:The Helping Teachers Thrive Hub: https://patreon.com/thehelpingteachersthrivehub?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLinkEPISODES TO CHECK OUT NEXT:https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/unlocking-your-impact-how-teachers-shape-lives/id1681843058?i=1000670853979ABOUT THE HOST:Since embarking on her teaching journey in 2009, Tem has been on a mission to empower students to reach their fullest potential. DESCRIPTION:Has teaching become harder than ever before? In this thought-provoking episode of Helping Teachers Thrive, Tem explores how the teaching profession has changed over the years and why so many teachers are experiencing burnout, overwhelm and increasing pressure in today's classrooms. From behaviour management and teacher workload to mental health support, student needs, data tracking, parental communication and accountability measures, this episode unpacks the growing demands placed on modern teachers and why comparing teaching “back then” to teaching today is far more complicated than many people realise. If you would like to enquire about trauma-informed training, please contact Tem at tem@helpingteachersthrive.com or book a call: https://calendly.com/tem-helpingteachersthrive/60KEY TAKEAWAYS:Modern teaching has become far more complex, with teachers now balancing behaviour management, mental health support, data tracking and increasing accountability pressures.Rising workload demands and constant scrutiny are contributing to growing levels of teacher burnout and educators leaving the profession early.Increased awareness of SEND and mental health needs means schools are becoming better at identifying and supporting students who need additional help.Sustainable teaching comes from focusing on high-impact strategies, setting clear boundaries and avoiding the pressure to do everything at once.Trauma-informed practice helps teachers create calmer, safer and more supportive learning environments that benefit every student, not just those with additional needs.Go to The Helping Teachers Thrive Hub to unlock exclusive content, strengthen your skills and access resources to help level up and thrive in your teaching profession for the price of a coffee!BEST MOMENTS:“It's not that teachers have become weaker..the job has become heavier.”“Doing everything isn't the goal; doing what matters most is.”“Teachers are at the front line of everything.”“We're here because we want to make a difference to the next generation.”“Trauma-informed practice doesn't just benefit one child, it benefits every single child.”VALUABLE RESOURCES:https://patreon.com/thehelpingteachersthrivehub?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLinkEPISODES TO CHECK OUT NEXT:The Power Of Positive School Cultures With Dr Jim Van AllanABOUT THE HOST:Since embarking on her teaching journey in 2009, Tem has been on a mission to empower students to reach their fullest potential. It's Not the Policy, It's the Practice: Why Behaviour Systems Fail in Schools

Helping Teachers Thrive

DESCRIPTION:In this episode, Tem explores why behaviour policies on their own rarely lead to meaningful change in schools, and what actually makes the difference in creating calm, consistent and supportive classroom environments. Too often, schools invest time and energy into refining policies, tightening rules, or rewriting expectations, yet behaviour challenges persist. The missing link is rarely the policy itself, but how confidently and consistently staff are able to apply strategies in real classroom conditions. This conversation shifts the focus away from paperwork and towards practice. It highlights the importance of staff confidence, shared routines, leadership modelling, and ongoing coaching in building a culture where both students and teachers can thrive. Tem also unpacks the importance of regulation before consequence, the role of trauma-informed approaches, and why behaviour support must always keep the human needs of students at the centre. If you are a teacher or school leader looking to reduce low-level disruption, strengthen consistency, and build a calmer learning environment, this episode offers a practical and grounded perspective on where real change begins. If you would like to learn more about trauma informed practice and positive behaviour support training, feel free to book a complimentary call today: https://calendly.com/tem-helpingteachersthrive/60KEY TAKEAWAYS:Behaviour policies alone don't improve behaviour.Practice matters more than paperwork.Staff confidence and consistency are crucial.Ongoing coaching is more effective than one-off CPD.Regulation must come before consequences.BEST MOMENTS:"You can have the best behaviour policy in the world and behaviour may still be an issue in your schools.”“Practice determines reality. What we do in practice has the biggest effect on improvements in behaviour in our schools, not what's written on the policy.”“Consistency comes from systems, not documents.”“When we are in classrooms, we're under pressure in real time...the behaviour system will either work or fall apart.”“Student will not learn from a consequence in that moment when they're not within their window of tolerance.”VALUABLE RESOURCES:https://patreon.com/thehelpingteachersthrivehub?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLinkEPISODES TO CHECK OUT NEXT:https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/does-shouting-actually-work-trauma-informed-behaviour/id1681843058?i=1000767481399ABOUT THE HOST:Since embarking on her teaching journey in 2009, Tem has been on a mission to empower students to reach their fullest potential. When you hire a property advisor, there's an assumption built into that decision: you're getting expertise, guidance, and some level of protection if things go wrong. But how much of that protection actually exists—and where does it break down?In this episode, we unpack the role of Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance in property advice, and what it really tells you about accountability, risk, and the quality of advice you're relying on.Joining us is Polina Kesov, an insurance specialist with over two decades of experience working behind the scenes on claims, risk, and policy structures. Together, we explore the blurred line between “execution” and “advice,” why many buyer's agents and property investment advisors may not be properly covered for the services they're offering, and how something as simple as a policy exclusion can leave both advisors and clients exposed. We also dive into why claims in property advice are so rare—not because everything is working, but because proving loss is complex, delayed, and often not actionable. From cookie-cutter strategies and disclaimers to the growing use of AI in advice, this episode breaks down the structural gaps that most investors never see until it's too late.If you're relying on professional guidance to make high-stakes property decisions, this conversation will change how you assess risk. Because in property, it's not just about whether the investment performs—it's about what happens if the advice behind it doesn't.Episode Highlights04:17 — Can Property Advisors Actually Get Covered?06:01 — What Makes a Property Advice Claim Valid?09:25 — Repeat Offenders and the Lack of Transparency11:42 — Marketing Hype vs Where Advice Crosses the Line16:10 — How Claims Impact Insurance Renewals21:01 — Real Claims Against Buyer's Agents Explained24:55 — Why Insurers Act as Hidden Risk Partners27:52 — How to Choose the Right PI Insurance Cover29:58 — What a Certificate of Currency Really Tells You31:44 — Why You Must Verify Advice Scope in Writing33:40 — Multiple Claims: A Major Red Flag35:45 — Licensing Gaps and Disclosure Obligations37:57 — AI Advice: Who's Liable When It Goes Wrong?39:38 — What Questions Should You Ask an Advisor?41:14 — Why Property Advice Claims Stay So Low47:47 — SMSFs and Trusts: Where Advice Gets Risky50:14 — Vicarious Liability: How Risk Spreads Fast53:22 — Key Takeaways Every Investor Should KnowAbout the GuestPolina Kesov is an insurance advisor with over 20 years of experience working alongside Australian businesses on risk, claims, and insurance coverage. Specialising in the blue collar industry and temp contracts, Ashlea dives listeners into the world of recruitment.Firstly, Ashlea shares her journey into the industry. From starting as a fledgling recruitment officer provided with no training to a thriving, successful and envied recruitment manager.Commenting on how recruitment is such a diverse industry, where you work with a variety of people and you get to work with all types of people in the business, from business owners all the way to the factory workers.Ashlea tells all about the trials of tribulations of working for other companies, sharing the people who've inspired her along the way. She also delves into the circumstances which led her to start up her own business. Going from strength to strength as she climbed the corporate ladder of recruitment, Ashlea found herself in a situation where she had to start her own business and has thrived ever since. Particularly crediting Megan, her ‘right arm', for supporting her from the very start. “It was a case of now or never,” said Ashlea. “[I said to her] I'm just going to jump into my own business.”Ashlea discusses her personal and professional growth whilst starting IRecruit4 and the heavy job of supporting people into employment. Divulging how the ethos of her business centres around putting people first as she highlights the importance of building relationships with businesses caveating that whilst iRecruit4's fees are higher; they provide loyalty and quality to clients.“A lot of these people are living paycheck to paycheck Lauren,” she says. “These are people's livelihoods.”Ashlea touches on her need to work within a community and how her active decision to engage with charities has been a priority from the start. She shares her goal to collaborate with her community, calling iRecruit4's charity work “We Share Because We Care” where a percentage of their invoice value goes to a charity of the client's choice. She stresses how this initiative is about working together to support those in need.In her conversation with Lauren, Ashlea expresses the role and importance of PR in her business. Sharing how she doesn't have the relationships in the local area and getting to know people and their community stories makes a massive difference, how going to networking events and sharing your stories and your business is essential, especially when you don't have the longevity in the area. People feel like they know you when you walk through the door.“One of the things we've learnt in recruitment is that ‘people buy from people' and it's important to let our personalities shine and you want to be trusted and working on your PR is great for that,” she said.Ashlea also plunges into the world of AI in recruitment and how it's impacting the sector along with iRecruit4's responses to try and put people first. Supporting clients through interview and CV skills.“You have to be very careful in our industry because our industry is very people focused and what you don't want is to lose that personal touch,” she said.To contact Ashlea Fisher, visit IRecruit4's website: www.irecruit4.co.uk or email her ashlea@irecruit4.co.uk To get in touch with Lauren and the Scott Media team, visit www.scottmedia.ukJoin our free Facebook group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/prtribe

I walk you through how to submit ISC2 CPEs in a way that is accurate, defensible, and easy to repeat, so you never wake up to a renewal deadline panic. We talk real numbers too: 120 CPE credits per three-year cycle, a minimum of 40 each year, and the $125 annual maintenance fee that can sneak up on you if you are not watching your dashboard. Before we get into the portal clicks, I bring up an idea that matters for every cybersecurity professional: the hidden cost of cybersecurity specialisation. Specialising can raise your income and sharpen your value, but without broad context you can lose the big picture, mis-prioritise risk, over-rely on tools, and slow down detection and response. The goal is to build depth while staying fluent across the CISSP domains and the business realities those domains protect. Then we go step by step through CPE submission: choosing the right category (education, contributions, professional development, or unique work experience), understanding Group A vs Group B, selecting relevant CISSP domain areas, converting time into credit hours, and attaching supporting documentation that holds up during an ISC2 audit. I also share the most common mistakes that waste time, including waiting until the last minute, entering hours incorrectly, miscategorising activities, and failing to save proof for at least 12 months beyond your certification expiration date.If you want more practical CISSP training and a smoother CPE routine, subscribe, share this with a friend who is newly certified, and leave a review so more people can find the show.Gain exclusive access to 360 FREE CISSP Practice Questions at FreeCISSPQuestions.com and have them delivered directly to your inbox!  Don't miss this valuable opportunity to strengthen your CISSP exam preparation and boost your chances of certification success. You'll discover practical ways to stop blending into the crowd and start becoming the obvious choice by defining your unique value and enhancing the patient experience. What You'll Learn The Danger of Commoditisation: How identical websites and messaging make practices indistinguishable—and why patients default to price or convenience when they can't see a difference. The Power of Patient Feedback: Why surveying current, past and even lost patients uncovers the real reasons people choose (or don't choose) you. Riches in the Niches: How defining a specific target market allows you to tailor amenities, scheduling and communication to meet their exact needs. Differentiating Through Experience: Specific examples of unique amenities, loyalty programs, personal touches and cutting‑edge technology that set you apart from your competitors. Learning from the Best: The value of modelling successful clinics' strategies instead of reinventing the wheel. Action Steps: How to bring all these elements together and why ongoing differentiation keeps patients loyal and referring their friends. Key Takeaways If you don't define what makes your practice special, patients will assume you're just like everyone else. Small touches—like friendly staff, shorter wait times or flexible financing—can be major differentiators. DESCRIPTION:In this episode, Tem discusses the critical impact of language when interacting with students, particularly those who are dysregulated or misbehaving. She emphasises that the words educators choose can either escalate or deescalate a situation, significantly affecting the student's emotional state and the overall classroom environment. Tem shares a personal experience where she disagreed with a statement used by educators, which she believes conveys a lack of care and support to the student, and advocates for a more empathetic approach that separates the behaviour from the individual, fostering a supportive atmosphere that encourages students to feel safe and understood. Tem elaborates on the importance of trauma-informed practices, highlighting how negative language can reinforce feelings of inadequacy in students. She provides alternative phrases that educators can use to communicate effectively and compassionately, ensuring that students know they are supported. What did ancient Egyptians like to smell? Did they use any narcotics in their day to day lives? And what do mummified bodies smell like? Today, I'm pleased to welcome Dora Goldsmith to the podcast. Dora Goldsmith is a PhD-candidate at the Freie Universitat in Berlin, Germany. Specialising in ancient smellscapes, Dora explores how the ancient Egyptians perceived and described the scent of their world. Along the way, Dora introduces us to the favoured perfumes and flowers used by the ancients, some of their “recreational” substances, and how mummified bodies smell today.
