Benoit Blanc is back — but not in the way you might expect. In this episode, we dig into Wake Up Dead Man, the third entry in Rian Johnson's Knives Out series, and quickly realise this isn't just another playful, sun-drenched whodunnit. The tone is darker, stranger, and far more morbid than Knives Out or Glass Onion, leaning hard into religious imagery, guilt, confession, and moral rot.Set around a remote church and a fire-and-brimstone priest, the film opens with what looks like an impossible murder: a man stabbed in a sealed room, in full view of his congregation. From there, Blanc circles a tight group of suspects — each with motive, history, and secrets — as the film toys with classic murder-mystery rules… and then quietly breaks a few of them. What we talk about in the episode:The tonal shift — why this feels closer to gothic noir than cosy Agatha ChristieReligion, confession, and judgment as thematic engines, not just window dressingWhether the mystery is too Scooby-Doo or intentionally rejecting “fair-play” sleuthingA stacked cast and who actually makes an impact (and who doesn't)Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc: more observer than solver this time — for better or worseThe film's final act, revelations, and why it left us oddly unsatisfied despite clever ideasHow it stacks up against Knives Out (still the gold standard) and Glass Onion (the loudest sibling)We also get into a broader debate about modern murder mysteries, Netflix's influence on structure and pacing, and whether this series is drifting away from the thing that made it work in the first place: watching a brilliant detective actually do the detecting. If you like your whodunnits bleak, talky, and a little unholy — or if you just want to hear us wrestle with a film that's clever, flawed, and deliberately frustrating — this one's for you.

She helmed multiple episodes (including the series finale) and oversaw the show's directing team. Soon after, she directed the pilot and second episode of the NBC missing persons drama "Found" from Nkechi Okoro Carroll and Greg Berlanti. Davis received a Gracies Awards Honorable Mention for her work on "Found" and returned in their final season to direct the penultimate episode. Davis, of course, agreed and arrived at the "Queen Sugar " production office on crutches (who has time for a broken ankle?). Later that summer, DuVernay asked Davis to be Producing Director on the third season of "Queen Sugar." We discuss the newest Knives Out mystery in a new Home Box Office Drop! Directed, and written by Rian Johnson, the newest entry in the Knives Out franchise of course features Daniel Crain returning as Benoit Blanc, alongside Josh O'Connor, Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Kerry Washington, Cailey Spaeny, Thomas Hayden Church, Daryl McCormack, Jeremy Renner, and Mila Kunis. In this episode we talk about Marx's theory on alienation under capitalism (a favorite topic of late), the marriage between the western Christian church and capitalism, the slow burn that is Knives Out, and how Benoit Blanc falls outside of the police and capital partnership and is thus excluded from the fact that ALL cops are in fact bastards. Ever since we started hosting live Collider Ladies Night panels at San Diego Comic-Con, we've been tempted to explore doing group editions of the show, and what better ensemble to start that with than the women of the new Knives Out movie?Mila Kunis, Cailee Spaeny and Kerry Washington are some of the latest to join Rian Johnson's growing Knives Out family. In the third installment of the Oscar-nominated franchise, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Spaeny and Washington play two of Monsignor Wicks' (Josh Brolin) parishioners. Washington's Vera Draven is a lawyer whose father was a close friend to Wicks before he passed, and Spaeny plays Simone Vivane, a renowned concert cellist struggling with health concerns. When Monsignor Wicks is suddenly killed in the middle of a service while totally alone in the storage closet, Kunis' Police Chief Geraldine Scott calls upon Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) to investigate. Could Vera or Simone have killed Wicks? Or perhaps it was another member of his flock? Or, what about the church newcomer, Josh O'Connor's Father Jud Duplenticy? This time around, Blanc will have to do the impossible — solve a locked-room murder mystery. The Knives Out movies have become highly regarded for their summer camp-like sets and for their unparalleled rosters of talent, and Wake Up Dead Man is no different. Not only are Kunis, Spaeny and Washington fantastic additions to this cinematic world, but they also rock a wonderful group dynamic in an interview setting, one oozing with enthusiasm for each other as people and artists, feelings that left them eager to reunite for another film. We discuss the franchise's increasingly charismatic roster of secondary protagonists, the year of Josh O'Connor, and whether or not Johnson's penchant for heavy-handed topicality once again derails a Benoit Blanc tale.

The Netflix whodunit "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery" is the third movie in filmmaker Rian Johnson's tongue-in-cheek series featuring Daniel Craig as private detective Benoit Blanc. This time out, a young priest played by Josh O'Connor is accused of murdering a charismatic monsignor. The all-star cast includes Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner and Kerry Washington. They're all obviously having fun and O'Connor, in particular, is excellent. But this mildly engaging mystery is overlong and really stretches credibility. Still, "Wake Up Dead Man" is more than entertaining enough to keep you awake. The wildly original horror satire "Dust Bunny" plays like a midnight movie for the junior high set. A little girl named Aurora, sharply played by Sophie Slone, is haunted by a giant carnivorous dust bunny under her bed. After it has eaten her parents, she hires a neighbor, played by Mads Mikkelsen to dispatch it. It turns out that resident in apartment 5B is actually a hired killer, an associate of a handler played by Sigourney Weaver. The art direction and off-kilter humor are very imaginative, but "Dust Bunny" doesn't quite clean up as it tries to stick the landing. The Amazon Prime holiday rom-com "Merv" is one shaggy dog of a movie...and that has nothing to do with the fact that it's about a canine. Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox play an estranged couple who share custody of a scruffy pooch who's depressed by their separation, Their efforts to cheer him up mostly fail but rekindle their romantic spark. "Merv" is well meaning, but as artificial as an aluminum Christmas tree.

Benoit Blanc is on the case again as he's called to solve a murder at a church in a seemingly-quaint New England hamlet. Josh O'Connor is the local priest, and there are a host of suspects to choose from. Aaron joins us to discuss Wake Up Dead Man.
Travis Hopson reviews Rian Johnson's WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY starring Daniel Craig, Josh O'Connor, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Jeremy Renner, Glenn Close, Cailee Spaeny, Mila Kunis, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.SYNOPSIS: Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returns for his most dangerous case yet in the third and darkest chapter of Rian Johnson's murder mystery opus. When young priest Jud Duplenticy (Josh O'Connor) is sent to assist charismatic firebrand Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), it's clear that all is not well in the pews. Wicks's modest-but-devoted flock includes devout church lady Martha Delacroix (Glenn Close), circumspect groundskeeper Samson Holt (Thomas Haden Church), tightly-wound lawyer Vera Draven, Esq. (Kerry Washington), aspiring politician Cy Draven (Daryl McCormack), town doctor Nat Sharp (Jeremy Renner), best-selling author Lee Ross (Andrew Scott), and concert cellist Simone Vivane (Cailee Spaeny). After a sudden and seemingly impossible murder rocks the town, the lack of an obvious suspect prompts local police chief Geraldine Scott (Mila Kunis) to join forces with renowned detective Benoit Blanc to unravel a mystery that defies all logic.WAKE UP DEAD MAN is in select theaters now, Netflix on December 12th.All of this and more can be found at www.punchdrunkcritics.com!Subscribe to Punch Drunk Critics on YouTube: / @punchdrunkcritics1 Follow Punch Drunk Critics on Twitter: / pdcmovies Follow Punch Drunk Critics on Facebook: / pdcmovies You can also subscribe to our podcast Cinema Royale anywhere you get your podcasts!#WakeUpDeadMan #KnivesOut #rianjohnson
Rian Johnson & Daniel Craig have returned to deliver us their third Knives Out Mystery. Wake Up Dead Man has now dropped in select theaters worldwide, and will drop on Netflix on December 12. I'm very lucky to be ten minutes away from a local cinema that plays all of Netflix's releases before they drop on the platform, so you bet I rushed out to see the new whodunnit on the first day of release. The first Knives Out is easily my favorite murder-mystery of all-time, and Glass Onion was definitely a really solid follow-up even if it was a little uneven. More importantly though, I think Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, has to be on the Mount Rushmore of most iconic new movie characters of the past decade; in fact, I think Craig is so good in the role that Blanc is now dangerously close to overtaking Bond as his most iconic character. I know, I know... sue me. Rian Johnson is also one of my favorite filmmakers and he never misses! So, is Wake Up Dead Man the most engrossing mystery the team have delivered yet? T.A Shelano and Rich from The Middle-aged Bodcast return to Flixwatcher to review T.A's choice Django Unchained. Django Unchained (2012) is the 8th film from writer and director Quentin Tarantino. Two years before the Civil War, Django (Jamie Foxx), a slave, finds himself accompanying an unorthodox German bounty hunter named Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) on a mission to capture the vicious Brittle brothers. Their mission successful, Schultz frees Django, and together they hunt the South's most-wanted criminals. Their travels take them to the infamous plantation of shady Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), where Django's long-lost wife (Kerry Washington) is still a slave. Django Unchained earned Christoph Waltz his second Best Supporting Actor and birthed the Leonardo DiCaprio laughing meme. But it isn't without controversy over its depiction of slavery and graphic violence. Recommendability scores for Django Unchained were pretty high, but the two hour 45 minute runtime meant lower repeat viewing scores to give an overall rating of 3.27. Episode 205: Atopic Dermatitis Kara Willbanks (medical student) explains the definition, pathophysiology, and treatment of eczema. Dr. Arreaza adds some input about bleach baths and topical steroids. Written by Kara Willbanks, MSIV, American University of the Caribbean. Comments and edits by Hector Arreaza, MD.You are listening to Rio Bravo qWeek Podcast, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California, a UCLA-affiliated program sponsored by Clinica Sierra Vista, Let Us Be Your Healthcare Home. This podcast was created for educational purposes only. Visit your primary care provider for additional medical advice.October is the Eczema Awareness Month! What Is Atopic Dermatitis? Atopic dermatitis, a form of eczema, is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disorder that often begins in childhood but can affect people of all ages. Other eczematous dermatoses include seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, juvenile plantar dermatosis, and stasis dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common skin conditions in the developed world, typically affecting up to 20% of children and 5-10% of adults. Patients usually present with severe pruritus (itchiness) and dry, inflamed patches of skin. Common sites include the face and extensor surfaces in infants, and flexural areas — like the elbows and knees — in older children and adults. Atopic dermatitis is often associated with other allergic conditions like asthma and allergic rhinitis — what we call the “atopic triad.” These conditions should also be considered when diagnosing someone with atopic dermatitis. PathophysiologyAtopic dermatitis is believed to occur due to a combination of genetic, immune, and environmental factors. A major component is a defective skin barrier, often linked to mutations in the filaggrin gene. This allows irritants, allergens, and microbes to penetrate the skin more easily, triggering inflammation.Differential DiagnosisAtopic dermatitis can sometimes mimic other skin conditions, so it's important to keep a differential in mind: -Contact dermatitis – triggered by allergens or irritants; often limited to the area of exposure but also tends to be very itchy. -Seborrheic dermatitis – greasy scales, typically on the scalp, eyebrows, and nasolabial folds -Psoriasis – well-demarcated plaques with silvery scales; sometimes found in similar areas of the body as eczema. -Tinea (fungal infections) – ring-shaped lesions with active, scaly borders -Important to note that treatment of tinea with topical steroids can make the rash much worse. -Scabies – intense itching, especially at night, with burrows between fingers. Ruling out these conditions helps guide the right treatment and prevent chronic mismanagement. As a recap our main differential diagnosis: contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, tinea, and scabies. The treatment cornerstone: Moisturizers The most important daily treatment for atopic dermatitis is regular moisturizing. Moisturizers repair the skin barrier, reduce water loss, and protect against irritants. They should be applied at least twice daily, ideally right after bathing while the skin is still damp (within 3 minutes is most ideal). Use greasy ointments or thick creams rather than lotions — think products with ceramides or glycerin (hydrates and protects skin). It is best to choose ointments or creams without additives, perfumes or fragrances. Greasier ointments are the preferred vessel; however, patient compliance may be less as they may be unpleasant to some.Bleach Baths For patients with frequent skin infections or severe eczema, dilute bleach baths can be a game-changer. How to do it? Use ¼ to ½ cup of household bleach in a full standard bathtub of water (about 40 gallons) and soak for 10 minutes, twice a week. This helps reduce bacterial colonization — particularly Staphylococcus aureus — which commonly worsens eczema. After the bath, pat the skin dry and immediately apply a moisturizer (within 3 minutes). Bleach baths are endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Dermatology as an adjunctive treatment for atopic dermatitis, especially in patients with moderate to severe disease and frequent bacterial infections, but the evidence for their efficacy is mixed, and further well-designed studies are needed.Medical Treatments-Topical corticosteroids: When moisturizers alone aren't enough, we move to anti-inflammatory therapy. Topical corticosteroids are the first-line treatment for flares. Some studies suggest that a short burst of a high-potency topical corticosteroid to rapidly control active disease, followed by a quick taper in potency, is most effective, whereas others use the lowest-potency agent thought to be needed and adjust upward only if this fails. Common steroids used are hydrocortisone (low potency), triamcinolone (medium potency), or betamethasone (high potency). -High-potency steroids should never be applied to sensitive skin like the face. With short-term use of lower-potency steroids, there is a low likelihood of skin atrophy but use for more than 6 months is linked with greater levels of skin thinning -Wet wrap therapy: Wet wrap therapy improves absorption of topic steroid. Apply a topical steroid, then layer a wet dressing and then a dry dressing over the top of that. This can be beneficial in providing both relief of symptoms and prevention of itching. In pediatric patients it is called “daddy's socks therapy” because large socks may be used to cover the arms of kids.-Topical calcineurin inhibitors — like tacrolimus — are great alternatives for sensitive areas or for maintenance once inflammation is under control. They may burn upon application which can scare patients away from their use.-PO antihistamines can help with itching, especially at night, but they don't treat inflammation itself.-Systemic therapies, like dupilumab (Dupixent®), an IL-4 receptor antagonist, are reserved for moderate to severe cases unresponsive to topical therapy. This is a great time to refer to your local dermatologist for management! Many of the newer treatments are highly effective but can require more frequent monitoring.Recent Research One recent study is the 2024 Cochrane network meta-analysis comparing effectiveness of topical anti-inflammatory treatments for eczema that was recently published in the AFP Journal in July of 2025.Here are the highlights:-Over 291 RCTs with ~45,846 participants were included. -The analysis ranked potent topical corticosteroids, JAK inhibitors (for example ruxolitinib (Opzelura® 1.5 %), and tacrolimus 0.1 % among the most effective for reducing signs and symptoms of eczema. -In contrast, PDE-4 inhibitors [like crisaborole (Eucrisa®) 2 %] were among the least effective in this comparison. -Regarding side effects: tacrolimus and crisaborole were more likely to cause burning or stinging at the application site; corticosteroids were less likely in the short term to cause local irritation.-Long-term outcomes regarding effectiveness or safety of treatments for eczema were not addressed by the review because they are rarely reported.”-Another insight from this study is considering cost when initiating treatment. Most topical steroids are significantly more cost effective than JAK inhibitors or calcineurin inhibitors so it may be best to start with a cheaper solution in an uninsured patient considering their relative effectiveness. Additional Tips & Lifestyle -Keep baths and showers short and in lukewarm water.-Avoid harsh soaps and detergents — use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers.-Wear soft cotton clothing instead of wool or synthetics.-Identify and avoid triggers — common ones include stress, sweating, allergens, and certain foods (especially in kids).-Ice packs can help reduce itching and relieve any burning sensation.-Keep fingernails short, especially in children, help cause less trauma to the skin from repeated itching. Living with eczema Many celebrities like Kerry Washington, Jessica Simpson, Kelly Rowland, Brad Pitt and Kristen Bell have spoken out about their lives with eczema. They have shared personal stories about how they were diagnosed, what treatment works for them, and the general impact it has had on their lives and mental health. I feel like it can be so important for celebrities to speak out about their lives with certain conditions because it helps to normalize the condition, raise awareness of the struggles, and encourages more open dialogue. It is important to remember that for patients living with eczema, the persistent itch-scratch cycle can be very distressing, causing patients to struggle with their sleep and day-to-day activities. Anxiety and depression are common in patients with eczema so as physicians it is vital to monitor for signs of distress. Support groups can be incredibly helpful for patients [National Eczema Association]If you are interested in providing additional information to your patients or getting this for yourself, you can find more resources on altogethereczema.org or nationaleczema.org. Key Takeaways Atopic dermatitis is chronic but manageable. Moisturizers are the foundation of treatment. Topical steroids and calcineurin inhibitors control inflammation. Bleach baths help reduce bacterial load and flare severity. Always rule out other skin conditions to ensure appropriate management. Atopic dermatitis can be managed by the primary care physician but in certain cases (cases refractory to standard topical treatment, recurrent infections, etc.), a referral to dermatology can be especially helpful.Even without trying, every night you go to bed a little wiser. Margo sits down with Barry Bordelon and Jordan Slocum—better known as The Brownstone Boys—a Brooklyn-based couple, award-winning interior designers, and renovation experts known for their ability to breathe new life into historic homes while keeping design fresh, livable, and true to their roots. What began as a shared passion project to restore their first brownstone quickly became a creative business built on authenticity, approachability, and an unshakable belief in learning by doing. Without formal design training, Barry and Jordan leaned on curiosity, community, and sheer persistence to grow their brand into one of the most trusted names in renovation. Along the way, they've worked with clients like Kerry Washington and Peloton's Anna Greenberg, launched collaborations with brands like Blueprint Lighting, and released their debut book For the Love of Renovating. Together, they share what it means to build a business (and a life) together, how to stay grounded in your values, and why the most beautiful spaces often come from imperfect beginnings. Margo, Barry and Jordan discuss: How a bike ride through Brooklyn led to a shared dream of restoring a brownstone—and building a creative business from the ground up. The early days of The Brownstone Boys and how posting their real-life renovation journey online unexpectedly launched a design career. Learning by doing—why neither formal training nor perfectionism are prerequisites for success. The power of authenticity on social media and how showing the real moments built their loyal community. Finding balance and clarity in a creative partnership—how Barry and Jordan divide roles, communicate, and keep their vision aligned. Their signature design philosophy: honoring history while adding a clean, modern touch. Growing up watching her parents navigate rough patches, she learned early that marriage isn't about perfection—it's about commitment through the messy, uncertain middle. When she was 16, frustrated watching her parents struggle, her mom told her something that changed everything: "Your 16 years are a fraction of our marriage. We've had good times and bad times. Your little window into this is not the full story." That wisdom shaped how Kerry approaches her own marriage today, especially while juggling demanding film schedules and raising kids. She reveals how she and her husband don't wait for crisis to do the work—they treat their relationship like going to the gym, showing up consistently to strengthen what matters most. What makes this conversation so powerful is Kerry's honesty about separating ego from love when both partners are evolving in high-stakes careers. She shares how they transformed their marriage by viewing it as a "third entity"—not just give-and-take between two people, but something sacred they both pour into. Instead of keeping score of who sacrificed what, they invest in a shared emotional bank account that sustains them through separation, exhaustion, and the chaos of modern life. Her approach to therapy isn't about fixing what's broken; it's about actively celebrating what's working, acknowledging each other's efforts, and creating space to grow together rather than apart.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Nick revisits one of Jay Pharoah's funniest original creations from his Saturday Night Live years: Principal Daniel Frye of Booker T. Washington High School. While Pharoah is best known for his uncanny impressions of Barack Obama, Chris Rock, Denzel Washington, and more, Principal Frye proved he could also deliver side-splitting original characters. The sketches feature the Principal's absurd morning announcements, with help from guest hosts like Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate, Kerry Washington, and Anna Kendrick. Nick shares behind-the-scenes details about how the character came to life, and even tells the story of how Justin Bieber nearly derailed one of Frye's funniest appearances. It's a tribute to one of SNL's most underrated cast members and a reminder of just how funny Jay Pharoah's tenure really was. [EP 141]
