T.O. got out of prison in Rutland a couple weeks ago, after a six and a half year bid. I met T.O. through my private investigator friend Susan Randall in May, 2017. He'd been a client of hers in a federal public defender case. T.O.'s been in and out of jail his whole adult life, and it's become a kind of tradition for us to get together and talk when he gets out of jail. We don't talk about his crimes. Mostly we talk about what it's like to start over…over and over. Now T.O. is in his mid forties, and this time he was released in the middle of a Vermont winter.
On this 420 Bonus show, we share an episode of one of our favorite podcasts, Rumble Strip. It's made by Erica Heilman who tells stories of rural Vermont. On this episode she interviews Vermonter John Rodgers, a stonemason the Northeast Kingdom, where he also runs a construction business, plows driveways and rents properties, and for sixteen years he served in the Vermont Legislature in both the House and the Senate. He works all the time so he can hold onto the farm that's been in his family for 200 years. It was a dairy when he was growing up there. Now he's growing weed for Vermont retailers. Thank you to Erica Heilman at Rumble Strip for letting us share this episode! Please go to her website and listen to more episodes of Rumble Strip: https://www.rumblestripvermont.com/

Vaughn Hood was a 118-pound barber when he was drafted into the Vietnam War. And in Vaughn's war, most men didn't survive their first three-month tour. In honor of Veteran's Day, here is the story of an extraordinary American life. This story is co-produced by Larry Massett and Erica Heilman. It first ran in...I can't remember what year. About five years ago.

I attended a pre-race panel discussion and learned about some other runners' perspectives. I also share a recap of my glorious day as a spectator at the Boston Marathon. Erica Heilman is the host of the podcast Rumblestrip. The Atlantic recently named her series ‘Our Show’ the best podcast of 2020. But before she was a brilliant podcaster, Erica was a lot of other things. She was a seller of muffins, she was a theater performer, she milked cows, she worked on a TV news show, then in documentaries, then for a healthcare website…and that’s not all.It took Erica a while to get where she wanted to be. And she’ll be the first to admit she had no idea where that was.She is not the only person who’s struggled to work out, what am I doing? What am I good at? How best do I use the skills I actually have? Some of us take longer to get there. We wish it were different, but it’s not. This is a show about the messiness of the unconventional career path. Shana from Achterarder, Scotland. My friend Erica Heilman has a podcast called Rumblestrip. She drives around Vermont and talks to people about their lives. Last week she was sitting at home, like everybody, trying to figure out what to do, and she decided to ask her listeners to send her audio recordings of what and how they’re doing under self isolation. A lot of people responded, quickly, and within a couple days Erica posted the first episode of a series she’s calling Our Show. If you’d like to send Erica an audio recording of what’s happening where you are, here’s the email address: rumblestripourshow@gmail.com.Rumblestrip websiteThe song at the end is Atlantic City by Bruce Springsteen, performed by The Band. Today on your Daily Detroit, we’re talking all things autos. After all, it’s usually at this time of year when everyone’s in town for the North American International Auto Show. Although the big Detroit show is in the summer now, have no fear. We thought we’d fill your tank with some updates on cool car tech from the Consumer Electronics Show, talk about the almost-sure reintroduction of the Hummer, the Mustang Mach E, Jeep, saving money when buying a car, and of course, electric and self-driving cars. Our conversation style today will be very similar to when we do one of our bar and restaurant roundups, where we bring in someone who has their head in that stuff all the time. So today, joining us is Eric Trytko. He has years of experience covering and working in the industry, as well as experience as a motorsports announcer. You might know him online as Rumblestrip. Find him on Twitter here. As well as YouTube. So enjoy! There is an unusual piece of carved grey stone in the hills of upstate New York. It depicts the boot of a notorious American villain who was shot in the leg during the Battle of Saratoga. Major General Benedict Arnold’s name is nowhere to be found on the inscription. Instead, it refers only to the "most brilliant soldier of the Continental Army”. The rest is implied.
Another week in the auto industry and we have more stories of triumph and failure. While Ford trumpets mega profits, Toyota finds itself amidst an embarrassing recall and production freeze of millions of vehicles. Meanwhile, Big Ed Whitacre has appointed himself as permanent CEO of GM, and we're not really sure yet if that's good or bad. With us to debate these issues and more is a friend of the show who's really with us every Thursday night, albeit virtually. Eric Trytko, the blogger and podcaster from Rumblestrip.net is normally one of our loyal chat mods, but tonight he's here in the flesh to weigh in on the discussion. Peter De Lorenzo, the Autoextremist, and David Welch from BusinessWeek and Bloomberg News also join John McElroy in studio.
