The foundational brand campaigns of Home Depot, Chick-fil-A, RAM Trucks, Hummer, Fiat, Motel 6, Corona, Chili's, Stanley, and Southwest Airlines were all born in Texas. We recorded live at TRG to talk about this great body of work and what makes them Texas originals. I was joined by Derek Dabrowski, SVP, Head of Cold Brands at Kuerig Dr. Pepper, Terrence Reynolds, CCO, at TRG, Kate Rush Sheehy, CSO at GSD&M and Christopher Owens, Head of Brand Strategy at TRG.
Well it's here, the week before one of the great golf weekends - the Ryder Cup. But before we get to our preview, a reminder about our Talk Birdie To Me Golf Day at Links Golf and Wellbeing at Hope Island on the Gold Coast, it's now two weeks away (Wednesday October 8th), Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen will be playing the tournament along with 80 or 90 wolfpackers. A few tickets left here. The prizes are brilliant:FootJoy vouchers;Titleist GT Driver and 3 wood with a custom fitting with a Titleist Fitting Specialist;A set of custom fitted Vokey Wedges fitted by a Titleist Fitting Specialist;A couple of dozen Pro V1 golf balls;Golf Clearance Outlet vouchersLuxury Escapes vouchersAnd the hole in one prize from Luxury Escapes: a week at the Pullman Maldives with return flights for two if you if you don't mind! Conditions apply, but there is only 3 conditions - pros ineligible (Nick and Mark you're out), only one prize - so if two aces are hit we do a random draw, and it applies on the 17th hole, which is a gettable Par 3.Fun!Now onto the pod. Nick and Mark are previewing the Ryder Cup, and Mark's first recommendation is to download the Ryder Cup app, it's brilliant. Nick talks about his memories of playing in Europe and feeling almost a part of it, as all the European pros wanted to be involved. Mark has a feeling the crowd, despite the US component being parochial, will lean European as there have been huge amounts of tickets sold to Europeans apparently. We discuss the pay controversy and the difference in approach between the Europeans and the US teams, Mark believes this is bad karma for the US and it will 'bite them'.As usual for a big event, we're putting a Talk Birdie multi on and working in our favour is that Hummer from Betr doesn't know a lot about the Ryder Cup, so we shot through our very gettable multi without any context for him and, in a moment of weakness, he whacked it up.Multi is:Scheffler to not have a winning record for the tournament, into;Europe to lead going into day 3, into;Europe to win.7 bucks. Get on board here under Betr specials and if you're not a member, it's a 60-second sign up process. We are confident, but of course there is no guarantee - so if you can't afford to lose it, don't bet it.We wrap up our Ryder Cup preview pod with some comments from Nick on how they are setting up Bethpage and why, and Nick outlines what he believes the US always get wrong in the Ryder Cup.It's going to be a ripper, we can't wait !!!We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:BMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And watchMynumbers and Southern Golf Club. It's September 9th. This day in 2001, a nationwide advertising campaign is underway for The Hummer truck, which has recently been taken over by GM and is poised to be everywhere.Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss how the Hummer moved from the Gulf War to US streets, was all over hip-hop videos, and how it came to define a form of agressive American masculinity that is resurging today.Don't forget to sign up for our America250 Watch newsletter, where you'll also get links and lots more historical tidbits.https://thisdaypod.substack.com/Find out more about the show at thisdaypod.comThis Day In Esoteric Political History is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX.Your support helps foster independent, artist-owned podcasts and award-winning stories. If you want to support the show directly, you can do so on our website: ThisDayPod.comGet in touch if you have any ideas for future topics, or just want to say hello. With the Ryder Cup teams for the US and Europe now a lock, a little later in the show we discuss the makeup of the teams and who will win. Mark says the European team is very strong, and tips them to win, Nick feels it will be close and the crowd may play a role. However, we start today talking about one of, if not the, greatest courses in the world - Cypress. Stunningly beautiful, and the venue for this weekends Walker Cup which is not being shown in Australia, much to Nick and Mark's chagrin. Yes there was much chagrin to go around. Chagrin wherever you look.Nick talks about one of his favourite books called 'The Match', and explains the premise....fascinating. Mark reckons it should be a movie and on the off chance any Hollywood type people listen to the pod (we realise it's a small chance) can you possibly make a movie out of it? Hang on.....our mate Michael Peña is back in Australian in a couple of weeks, maybe we can hit him up to lean on his contacts.Mark played Royal Melbourne at the weekend and gives a report on the course condition, the fringes, the greens and the trees. He reckons it'll be ready for The Australian Open, and look a million bucks, possibly except for one aspect, which he highlights. There is another thing about Royal Melbourne that he thinks is not right, and refers to some golf architects as 'mad'.We discuss the pathways news from last week, very exciting. Ernie Els comments about Tiger and the Champions Tour, Nick and Mark both feel it's a good move for Tiger and explain why....and in other Tiger-related news, Charlie Woods got a hole in one at the weekend! We have a listen to it.Nick is excited about the some of the European tournaments coming up, and chats through them.Touch of Class for BMW this week comes from the LPGA and features Miranda Wang with a fantastic performance in Boston. Given her surname, cue predictable and obvious Caddyshack joke!On The Ryder Cup - Mark makes the bold call that Betr don't know as much about this kind of golf as Nick and he do, and that he reckons we'll do a multi that will absolutely rinse Hummer and the team at Betr.Into the Top 5, thanks to Betr, and today it's on the top 5 vistas in golf featuring fauna (and such). Why 'and such'? No idea, Mark said it, we couldn't figure it out. Nick talks about the famous cypress tree at Cypress Point.PING globals from Nick, plenty going on to run through. And lots of feedback covering 'Chokers', Steve Williams, Caddies, some stories on Thomas Bjørn after Nicks comments last week, and on Lyndsay Stephen. Plus a whack for Greg Norman from a wolfpacker....ouch.And Nick's masterclass today is on the 'Pinky Drill'.We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. See your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;Golf Clearance Outlet, visit them online here to find your nearest store.Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia. And watchMynumbers: download from the App Store or Google Play, and Southern Golf Club: with their brand new Simulator Room. Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrops for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. This season, we put our detective skills to the test. This is Season 8, Anything but Murder. This is Episode 16, house arson is the featured crime. This is First Reports are Rarely Right by Larry M. KeetonDELIBERATIONDrake has a hot one on his hands and needs our help to put the pieces together on this arson case. (Then maybe Cassandra will keep hiring him.) Here are the people on his suspect list in the order we met them:Jack Phillips, owner of the house and disgruntled claimantCommissioner Donna Russell, the Hummer-driving road hogTeresa Kamps, HOA president who lives across from PhillipsRachel Quinn, the Fire Marshall recently promoted to Code ComplianceHere are the facts as Drake has unearthed them:Jack Phillips inherited his parents' home after their too early death. He blames HOA president Teresa Kamps for it. In retaliation, he's let the home run down, just to be an eye sore;On his visit to Phillips, who owns a 30-acre property, Drake was run off the road by a Hummer with a re-election sign on the door for Donna Russell; While interviewing Phillips, Drake sees a collection of pagers that Phillips says he uses to track delivery of restored cars to international buyers; The first report found cause of the house fire to be errant fireworks. Drake and Cassandra found inconsistencies between the original photos and what Drake finds on scene; Under protective sheets are untouched boxes and furniture Phillips is listing in his insurance claim;Phillips states recent maintenance was limited to spraying the roof to protect against moss. It was determined that zinc was used, which is highly flammable;HOA president Teresa Kamps had a 4th of July party that included Donna Russell. She denies setting fire to the house. She admits flying her drone but says she does not spy. There are opinions to the contrary. While Drake is inspecting, a second fire ignites from the baseboard heaters. Inspection after the fact uncovered batteries and melted plastic boxes and pager components in the heaters;Rachel Quinn was the original Fire Marshal on the case. She was also the woman on Phillips computer background. She was recently promoted to Code Compliance and her first action is to use a newly passed code to tear down the twice-burned house;Phillips and the county just negotiated the sale of the 30-acre property for $1.3 million dollars;Jack Phillips just wants what the insurance company owes him;Donna Russell is behind on her re-election bid and wants the HOA for their votes;Teresa Kamps wants the eye-sore gone from across the street;Rachel Quinn wants the promotion and to get Commissioner Russell off her back; andThe county Fire Marshal noted arson is the least prosecuted crimes and it was difficult to determine who had the most to gain. How should Drake re-write the report to get it right the second time?ABOUT True Crim House ArsonFrom my favorite source Wikipedia, comes the curated story of Thomas Sweatt. Renegade Thinkers Unite: #2 Podcast for CMOs & B2B Marketers
Drew worked on the team that launched the Panasonic Toughbook by driving a Hummer over it on live TV! That stunt turned heads, sure, but it also drilled the product's promise into buyers' brains: tough enough to survive anything. The best launches find that one thing that matters, makes it unforgettable, and builds everything else around it. In this episode, Drew Neisser is joined by Guy Yalif (Webflow), Chris Pieper (ADP), and Ali McCarthy (Amplify Your Voice Studio) to talk about why great launches start with one magical thing: the product's essence. In this episode: Guy shares how Webflow's multi-product expansion demanded a rethink of what buyers really needed and why one-size-fits-all launches rarely succeed Chris explains why the launch of ADP's Lyric platform meant wrangling hundreds of voices into one clear story without losing focus on what matters Ali breaks down why putting the customer's pain first is key and why clarity always beats complexity Plus: Why understanding the customer's pain points beats any feature checklist Why selling everything at once kills momentum How to keep the story tight so the team's always on the same page Why one person needs to own the launch story from start to finish Tune in to hear how great launches find the product's essence and turn it into a story buyers can't ignore. What is your earliest memory? That is what Lizz and Kelly are talking about today on The Carpool. For Lizz, it's her and Kelly playing with their imaginary friends who also happened to be big brothers. You always want the sibling combo you don't have. Kelly's earliest memories are of preschool and the spot to be was the peanut-free table. She perpetually had a peanut butter sandwich and was persona non-grata with the cool kids. Does she still harbor a bit of resentment? Don't even ask about the apples... Kelly is headed off on a family vacation with a Hummer and it got her thinking about cars that no longer exist that definitely should. The internet seems to be ravenous for a Ford Excursion. Kelly and Lizz's big prediction? We could be seeing a new Volkswagen Beetle hitting the market again! Slug bug! While Kelly is enjoying a vacation, Lizz will be back home working on sleep training Sloan. This leads to a discussion on the pressures of parenting thanks to social media. There are so many opinions coming from us at every angle, how do you decide what is right for you? It's time for a return of mother's intuition! What were the lessons your parents taught you as a kid? Kelly has two stories her father told her that she refers to daily. This is how she learned to not be afraid to ask questions and that just because something is always done one way doesn't mean it needs to always be done that way.
