In June, Hulu released the stunningly animated "Predator: Killer of Killers," which continues the new stewardship of writer-director Dan Trachtenberg, who put "Predator" back in the intimating and scary side of cinema with "Prey" a few years ago. Horror comes in all shapes and sizes. It's full of agitated alligators, bitey boars, creepy crawlies, disgusting degenerates, elemental eliminations, flesh eating freaks, gigantic gators, and so much more. What's scary for one person may be funny to another; to some it's campy to others it's art. But what makes a horror movie? For a genre of shifting definitions, is there an answer? On today's episode of Horror Inductee, we are going to take a step back 2 decades and ask the question, is Joy Ride a horror film? This 2001 fast-paced, well, joy ride, came to us from writers Clay Tarver and JJ Abrahams, and 16x Dexter director John Dahl. This film released nearly one month tk the day after 9/11. In a complete twist, a then-reeling American populace accepted the controlled carnage of Joy Ride to the tune 36 million dollars on a 23 budget. So, is this Steve Zahn vehicle a horror movie? Is Rusty Nail a bonafide slasher? And is Joy Ride secretly a shark film? The Six-Button Samurai is away on a spring vacation for this-here Episode 72. So GameAgentET, opting not to subject our listeners to an unhinged 1-hour soliloquy about the evils of gaming while on the toilet, decides to bring on fellow Ruminators Hoptimus (Retro Futurist Culture, Game Roominations) and Charlie (Brevity Box) for this special show. Discussions are made about the recently-delayed Grand Theft Auto VI, our favorite industry-defining game of our lifetimes, and the sobering new norm of prices going up, up and way up for game systems and software. We three ponder about these price-volatile times… if it's temporary or here to stay. While we're still pretty excited about the hardware itself, the nickel-and-dime nature of charging for updated visuals for older games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (not to mention overall game prices) feel a bit greedy. The gang also takes on the uneven state of fighting games in 2025, specifically some of the upheaval in the Tekken 8 community following their Season 2 launch, some weird marketing moves from SNK. and what may be next for Street Fighter VI in Season 3.
