My guests this week are JW and Skinny from the Stub Me Down podcast. It seems that since the pandemic got serious in March, lots of Phish podcasts have popped up, with mixed results. One of the better ones that I heard is called “Stub Me Down,” in which our two guests today literally pick a ticket stub from their collection and use it as a jumping off point to discuss the show, stories, music, and their friendship. I immediately thought that we were of a like mind and wanted to have them on Attendance Bias.JW and Skinny chose to discuss Phish’s show from July 3, 2000 at the E Center in Camden. I only saw one show in 2000, so I was eager to hear all about their podcast, Phish’s evolving sound at the time, and how to receive a 30-minute Runaway Jim in real time.So cross the Ben Franklin Bridge, watch out around the bathrooms, and enjoy the digital delay loop as JW, Skinny, and I talk about Phish in Camden on July 3, 2000.
Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Brittany Briley's smile lit up the trail in 2019, and we first met at Woods Hole Hostel. A nurse by training, she felt that the time was right to take a break in her early 30s and hiked the Appalachian Trail as joyously as anybody I met out there. We didn't hike together much but, as is the way of the trail, we often saw one another. Brittany shared part of the trail with the sadly missed Pony Keg and his dog Blue. Eventually, Brittany teamed up with previous guests on this show and she summited with Cushy Life, Turd Ferguson, and Shark Tooth, along with Runaway Jim. As she'll tell you, they laughed relentlessly. Knowing these people, I can well understand it. If you'd like to read Mooney's blog, here it is: https://www.hiketotheheart.com or follow her on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/hiketotheheart/ Sandi Marra speaks on behalf of the ATC with regard to their JEDI initiative. At the height of late 1.0 popularity, Phish heads to Japan in June 2000 to play clubs instead of arenas, amphitheaters, and swamps. 6-16-2000 in Osaka is my 3rd favorite of the 7 gigs they played, and illustrates the band's focus on quiet interplay, subtlety, and cooperative improvisation. Jams from Limb By Limb, Reba, Runaway Jim, Theme From the Bottom, Slave to the Traffic Light, and Harry Hood are included in this episode. Listen to the full show at phish.in and read the set list and reviews at Phish.net. The other big Japan 2000 jams I mention in this episode are the 6-9-2000 Tweezer, the 6-15-2000 Down With Disease, the 6-10-2000 Down With Disease and Piper, and literally all of 6-14-2000.
Welcome to Part 2 of my conversation with Dartmouth College professor David Lutz about Camp Oswego, day two, on 7/18/99. If you haven't listened to Part 1, please go back and listen to it as its own separate episode and as a prelude to this episode. Part 1 focused on Dave's history as a Phish fan, his background, and how he ended up at Camp Oswego as a teenager without a car. We got so deep into our nerdy Phish chatter that it took us over an hour just to get to set 1 of the show!We pick up here where we left off. Part 2 requires no introduction and we kick off with the set two opener, which happened to be a 24 minute Runaway Jim! In most shows, that Jim would be the highlight of the show. But Oswego was no ordinary show. Throughout this episode, we go over the mega-fast Piper, the Catapult/Icculus/Smoke of the Water insanity, and the legendary closing of Fluffhead and Harry Hood.If Part 1 was a deep dive into Phish geekery, theories, and history, then Part 2 is fully about the MUSIC. Both episodes add up to a comprehensive look back at what may be Phish's most under-appreciated festival.Audio for this episode: http://phish.in/1999-07-18

The last of my four part Japan series with Dave Calarco finishes with a beast. The second set opens with 45 minutes of boundary pushing Phish with "Runaway Jim->Theme->Dog Faced Boy". The soundcheck is one of the greats, with sick grooves based around Trey spitting hilarious improv comedy. This is also one of 6 shows ever to feature "Reba", "Slave To The Traffic Light", and "Harry Hood" all in the same show. Phish and Japan was something special. Hosted on Acast. This is the first hour of "The Land of Make Believe with Old Man Ratchet" that aired on January 26th, 2019 from 8 to 9 pm (est) on WOZO 103.9 LPFM in Knoxville, TN and streamed online at wozoradio.comThis hour is a pretty Random mix. There is a long Phish Jam of Runaway Jim, Antelope and Marisupa Policeman in the middle of this hour.

In Episode 037 we discuss the expansive, relentless, sometimes terrifying, others delicately beautiful, Runaway Jim from June 16, 1995 at Walnut Creek Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina. An archetypical Summer 1995 jam, this sees Phish mess with noise and sonic walls of sound in effort to find a musical connection far beyond the reaches of melody and accessible music.Songs featured in this episode are: Mark McGuire: "Brain Storm (For Erin)," Spiritualized: "I Think I'm In Love," The Caretaker: "Moments of Sufficient Lucidity," Low Cut Connie: "Beverly."In addition, we discuss two new 2018 records we highly recommend: Deeper: "Deeper," and Rolling Blackouts Costal Fever: "Hope Down."Today's episode is brought to you by Lure Social. Just another show from a condo complex... what? This show rocks from start to stop, making it far from underrated. However, it did not find wide circulation until the BitTorrent era began. The first set displays a band playing at the top of their game, with a fantastic Runaway Jim opener and three jam chart tracks before the break. Set two is a tour de force: strong, crafty, masterful. Split, McGrupp, and YEM will take your face off.
After being told to turn it down, Phish gives a clinic in quiet dynamics throughout both sets. This outdoor show in March features exceptional versions of Stash, Runaway Jim, It's Ice, and Weekapaug Groove.
We're back this week with Todd Ahrens, a previous guest who is here to talk about seeing Phish in Japan in both 1999 and 2000. He's incredibly lucky for having gone to both of these runs, and he shares his memories with us. You can read much more about his experiences here on his blog. And here's a video he put together about Phish at the Fuji Rock Festival. In some ways, this is a continuation of our 1999 episode, as Jonathan got the idea for this while we were recording that. He remembered that Todd was there, and that this deserved a lot more attention. So here we are, but we couldn't have just done '99, so we went on to '00 as well. This week, we're bringing you a set from the archives: Set 1 of 2.1.91, from Brown University. This week is the the 24th anniversary of the show, which has a couple key debuts and some wonderful improv that reminds us how talented this band was even in its first couple years of touring. Their playing is deft, precise and inspiring. Setlist is below. And a request. We do this podcast for one reason: to bring music and commentary to fans like you. It’s been 20 years, folks, since the epic Fall 1995 tour. Everything changed for Phish in 1995 (as it did again in ’97, ’99, ’04, ’13 and ’15). But this signaled the beginning of a new era—bigger venues, bigger crowds, bigger expectations. And during this tour, Phish did what they do best. They delivered. Our friends Wade and Josh joined us for this equally epic 3-part episode, where we played and discussed some of the highlights from this Fall 1995 tour. In contrast to the Summer 1995 tour, these jams have an incredible level of focus and clarity. But they’re not jams to be taken lightly. They’re dense, heady. As Wade says, listening to Fall 1995 “is not a spectator sport.” Hope you’re geared up. The details for all 3 parts are below. As always, we ask you to follow us on Twitter and review us on iTunes.
