Metaphors: they’re not just for dreaming anymore! Evidence shows that we think in them too. Our guest Dr. Alwin Wagener explains his embodied cognition theory of dreaming which explains how dreaming helps us update our metaphors to reflect our changing ideas about what matters to us most. We also talk about why exploring dreams in therapy is helpful and why therapists are often reluctant to do so. He offers the acronym SAFE which reminds therapists to explore dreams by encouraging clients to Share a dream, Appreciate the details of the dream, Find its significance to the client, and Edit the dream however the client would like. We also talk about Culturally Responsive Dreamwork which involves the therapist starting by finding out how the client already relates to their dreams. After the break, I share some intense dreams I have had since the presidential election involving a conversation on a city bus and a series of dreams about sliding down steep surfaces. Alwin guides me through an exploration of the images and feelings and draws out my associations. Ray from Santa Cruz calls in to offer his own dream of comfort. BIO: Alwin E. Wagener, PhD, LPC, NCC, is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University. His research focuses on dreams, and he recently published The Embodied Cognition Theory of Dreaming and created Culturally Responsive Dreamwork, which centers clients' cultural beliefs in dreamwork. The James Center for Tobacco Research “is truly one of the largest, if not the largest centers in the country and we clearly have the greatest breadth and depth of tobacco research in the country,” said Ted Wagener, PhD, director of the Center. Since the adoption of the 2009 Tobacco Control Act, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has regulated the tobacco industry. Wagener compared this to “whack-a-mole,” explaining that “the tobacco industry is always looking for loopholes.” These loopholes include the use of menthol, synthetic cooling agents, electronic cigarettes and flavored products for electronic cigarette use that are more attractive to teenagers. The tobacco industry is also developing a synthetic nicotine product that might not be considered a tobacco product in order to avoid regulation by the FDA. “We can, as researchers, affect legislation through our research … and we're trying to stay one step ahead of the [tobacco-producing companies],” Wagener said. “And that's tough to do because they're the ones creating the products.” For example, Wagener explained, tobacco companies use menthol to make their products less harsh and more palatable. “Menthol has a cooling sensation that makes it easier for young people to inhale.” He adds that research has shown that the tobacco industry targets younger users through these types of “starter programs,” hoping to create lifelong users. Initial research indicates electronic cigarettes are a nicotine delivery system that “delivers less carcinogens and toxicants than cigarettes,” Wagener said. “But still there are some carcinogens and toxicants and so, it seems to me, the cigarette companies are trying to come up with ways to negate the bad effects and still deliver nicotine. So far they haven't been able to. In the meantime, they're going to sell whatever they can and try to get away with whatever they can.” For example, while flavors for electronic cigarettes are banned, they are still readily available. While the number of smokers in the United States is dropping “we still have 500,000 people a year dying of tobacco-related diseases,” Wagener said.

Saksassa paljastui huhtikuussa 2016 40-vuotiaan naisen kuolema, jonka tutkinta johdatti viranomaiset yhteensä jopa kahdeksan erillisen rikostapauksen juurille. Vuosien ajan salassa jatkuneet pahoinpitelyt ja kidutus paljastivat lopulta yhden Saksan historian julmimmista rikoskokonaisuuksista, joka tunnetaan yleisesti nimellä ”Höxterin kauhujen talo”.

Identity theft is a massive and growing problem that requires smart risk mitigation strategies. That is one of the key messages coming out of a TechCentral TCS+ interview with executives from CYBER1 Solutions and iiDENTIFii. CYBER1 Solutions security architect Christiaan Swanepoel and iiDENTIFii co-founder and chief technology officer Marco Wagener unpack the subject in greater detail in the interview. They discuss: • The background to iiDENTIFii and its relationship with CYBER1 Solutions; • The current trends in identity theft, and why this type of theft is a growing concern for businesses; • How iiDENTIFii's software can play a big role in fighting the scourge of identity theft; • What companies are doing right and wrong in fighting the problem; • How businesses can enhance their identity verification process to mitigate against the risk of identity theft; • iiDENTIFii's solutions, and how they integrate with existing corporate systems; and • The role that cybersecurity tools can play in protecting personal identities; Swanepoel and Wagener also share their insights into future trends in the identity verification market and how businesses can prepare themselves. This is an important discussion for anyone involved in IT, but especially for those involved in cybersecurity – don't miss it! TechCentral

The Hunter Elite; Inside America's Secret Force Against Terror by Leon Wagener describes the transition of the Secret Service from being a strictly defensive organization to a proactive one. One could be fooled into thinking the book is a work of thriller fiction but it describes real people and situations. Leon says that getting inside the Secret Service was a difficult task. “They take the secret in the title very seriously.” Finally he found two agents willing to talk as long as their identities remained secret. Their code names are Ranger and Laredo. Laredo is a chemical/biological specialist and shared some very frightening stories. Our President receives an average of 6-8 threats every day. All these threats are investigated and prioritized. Those deemed to be a sufficient and real threat are assigned to the Hunter Elite. The origin of the Hawkeye CAT (Counter Assault Team) traces back to Nancy Reagan. After President Reagan was shot by Jonathan Hinckley, she exercised her considerable influence to get the group established. Hawkeye CAT is a heavily armed group that travels with the President everywhere POTUS goes. Their mission is to use overwhelming firepower to neutralize the threat – they are not there to make arrests. Leon shares a number of stories about incidents I have never heard. They include the time a man broke into the Reagan's private home seeking to kill them. Another involved a cartel assassin who was tracked down and intercepted by the Hunter Elite just before attacking President Obama on a golf course. In his book Leon also shares interesting insights into the differences in the relationships between various Presidents and the Secret Service. President Biden even attempted to dissolve the organization but was unsuccessful. Wagener is the author of bestselling biographies of Neil Armstrong and Jodie Foster. He also contributed to eight political books about the Clintons and Obamas which became New York Times bestsellers.

We're back this week for another Best & Worst episode; this time we're tackling the catalog of White Lion.White Lion, formed in New York in the early 1980's, featured all the ingredients that a band needed to propel them to stardom. Led by Danish-born front man Mike Tramp and the virtuosity of guitarist Vito Bratta, the band had the hooks, mind-bending guitar solos, and looks that were required to make it big in the 1980's.White Lion would start to build a following in the New York and New Jersey areas culminating with the release of 1985's debut album 'Fight to Survive.' After dealing with record company politics that would cause the album to be released overseas first before it was available in America, the band failed to hit it big but would garner attention in the rock press. With 1987's sophomore release 'Pride,' the band hit pay dirt. Produced by the legendary Michael Wagener, the album was replete with arena rock tunes that seemed a perfect fit for radio play. Once the single for 'Wait' hit MTV, the band's profile rose quickly. The release of power ballad 'When the Children Cry' catapulted the band to new heights.1989's 'Big Game' album saw the band team up with Wagener again to continued success. The single 'Little Fighter' did well at radio and also showed listeners that White Lion wasn't going to shy away from heavy subject-matter. Other songs like 'If My Mind is Evil' and 'Cry for Freedom' cemented that point. The juxtaposition of the bands' image combined with their willingness to break out of the 'party-rock' trend of lyrical content certainly was a contrast to other bands of the day.By 1991, the tides of popular rock music were shifting, making the release of 'Mane Attraction' a possible victim of circumstance. The album is every bit as eclectic as it's predecessor; but was it to a fault? We talk about all of these releases this week and share our thoughts on the songs, the playing, the direction of the band and more.
