Our intrepid hosts explore the sub-sub-sub genre of pop-punk songs about high school love triangles by Berklee College of Music graduates. There's a lot to unpack! Jazz chords, Miley Cyrus's thanksgiving plans, and screaming the word NINTENDO, for starters. Along the way, Evan and Andrew use their intimate knowledge of loving but occasionally antagonistic brotherly relationships to ingratiate themselves with their boss. Core to the music of Phish are complex, evolving, emotionally moving compositions. Many of these early songs—Divided Sky, You Enjoy Myself, Foam, and others—remain highlights of the live experience. These songs created early in Phish’s career have stood the test of time, but what makes them so special? In this episode, we’ll hear about three of these songs from Don Hart, the composer and arranger who has worked with Trey Anastasio for more than 15 years; and Drew Hitz, a classically trained musician and Phish fan. Don and Drew will walk us through these songs and talk about why they are such enduring pieces of Phish’s catalog. While many may prefer turning the pages of a book, audiobooks are increasing in popularity due to the convenience of being able to multitask as you listen. Painting a picture vocally—as opposed to just reading the words—is a gift that today's guests, Wesleigh Siobhan and Sean Crisden, possess having narrated more than 20 books collectively. During today's episode of Lets ManiFeast, Wesleigh and Sean share their preferences in a spirited game of "This or That", the journey that led to becoming audiobook narrators as well as the misconceptions and challenges of being black narrators. Press play and learn why Wesleigh and Sean are among the favorites of both authors and audiobook listeners. After listening, be sure to leave a review, share this podcast with your network, and https://beacons.ai/manifeast (follow ManiFeast). About Wesleigh Siobhan Wesleigh Siobhan has fallen in love with narrating romance from all subgenres, from inspirational and faith-based to the fun and sexy romantic comedy/contemporary romance to the spicy erotic romance or erotica novel. Based in New York City, one of the sexiest cities on the planet, Wesleigh has a love for adventure, trying new dessert recipes, and all things that inspire creativity and imagination. About Sean Crisden Sean Crisden has been a professional voice artist since 2006 but his history extends further than that. As a child, he was known as “Radio Man” for the articulate, listenable qualities within his voice. He doesn't know any other kid who took quite so much pleasure in standing up and reading out loud “Tikki Tikki Tembo” or “Bunnicula” for their class. This lead to an early pursuit of performing and Sean has performed for nearly a decade with the prog-rock band Divided Sky as vocalist and guitar player. He has expanded his abilities into on-camera acting, appearing in numerous commercials and films including M. Night Shyamalan's “The Last Airbender”. He was also fortunate to act in and choreograph the combat sequences in “Le Meduse Rouge”. When he isn't narrating, Sean trains in several martial arts to stay in excellent physical shape despite his love for apple pie. This week's guest is Daniel Pinchbeck, the author of How Soon Is Now?, which comes out on February 20. It's a fascinating and timely book that talks about how we can collectively get out of the ecological and environmental disasters we've gotten ourselves into. You can read more about Daniel here. This is a bit of a departure from our typical subject matter, but the overlap of consciousness, psychedelics, music and culture seemed appropriate to probe into, especially at this inflection point in American history. Really thought provoking conversation. Of course, there is some music. Went back to the archive for some early Phish, which we think was probably influenced by psychedelics. Enjoy! This week we are joined by our friend and guest host Jonathan, who brought us back to a wonderful show from 1989, from "Ian's House" (or "Ian's Party" at someone else's house). Either way, Ian was awesome. This show is historic, fun, and filled with really excellent playing. Trey's tone and precision in playing is just crisp, clear and on point, and as Jonathan pointed out, this is among the finest banter you'll ever hear in a Phish show. Very entertaining listen. But even more than entertaining, it's a reminder of how musically mature Phish was even by 1989—26 years ago. A great sounding show, taboot (taboot). This will be a 2-part podcast, with Set 1 this week, Set 2 and Set 3 next week. Chapter markers below. Here's Charlie Dirksen's review of the YEM. This week we have a long overdue guest, CJ, who is a longtime fan of the podcast and Mainer exiled in London. But we'll have him back for this Summer Tour, which we discuss on this show, along with lots of other things. The timing of this pick was stellar -- we'll be discussing and listening to the first day of the first Phish festival, the Clifford Ball, from 1996. Kate Spencer (VH1) tells us about her lifelong love of famed jam band Phish. We include some exceprts Phish songs in this podcast, and we need to mention two things: Phish songs are very long and deliberately have slow starts --- we tried to excerpt enough of the song to get a taste for that but ultimately an excerpt falls somewhat short of listening to an entire track. Also, we told Kate that any comments she made during the songs would not make it into the final podcast because during the live recording the tracks are quiet and we expected to replace them. BUT Kate's comments during the recording showed such enthusiasm that it seemed a more accurate descriptoin of the appeal of the band to figure a way keep them in. So you'll hear us say things like "wait! save that thought!" which turned out to be unnecessary. In addition to Phish, Anthony and Will talk a bit about their recent minor obsessions: re-discovering Kurt Vonnegut and the movie Singing In The Rain, respectively. Here's the full list of Phish songs Kate suggested we listen to in preparation for this podcast: 1. Divided Sky (my first AOL screenname is from this song!. I was at this one: Phish – The Divided Sky [Live In Brooklyn]) 2. Punch You In The Eye ( I am listening to this one now and it's so good. Phish – Punch You in the Eye) 3. Mike's Song --->I Am Hydrogen ----> Weekapaug (These are technically 3 different songs but often they all segue together and you kinda can't listen to one without the other. Like if you get a Mike's, you know Weekapaug is eventually coming and I like it best with IAH in the middle. This show has them all! Phish – Hampton/Winston-Salem '97) 4. Hood - I will cry talking about this song Phish – Harry Hood - Live LP Version - Hampton, 1998 5. The Curtain With (Phish – The Curtain With) You could also just do The Curtain, which is shorter with no jam at the end: Phish – The Curtain) This was the final song at their final show 6. I Didn't Know ( a different side of Phish!!!! Fishman plays the vaccum! Phish – I Didn't Know) 7. YEM --- Phish – You Enjoy Myself CLASSIC PHISH 8. Wolfman's Brother - always makes me so happy when they play Wolfman's Phish – Wolfman's Brother 9. Harpua Phish – Harpua - just such a weird, classic Phish song10. Phish – Fee --- The song that got me hooked when I was 14, from Junta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11. Strange Design -- I love when Page sings, and this song always makes me cry. He cried singing it at their "final show" Phish – Strange Design
Neil MacGregor examines the story of the two Germanys, East and West, created in 1949, through objects including a wet suit used in an escape attempt from the East in 1987, which was later used as a training device by the Stasi, the East German secret police. Neil also focuses on another Stasi training device, a model of Friedrichstrasse Station, a border crossing point in the divided Berlin, and reflects on the life and work of the East German writer Christa Wolf. Her novel Der Geteilte Himmel - The Divided Heaven, or The Divided Sky - was published in 1963, two years after the Berlin Wall went up. It made Christa Wolf's reputation, and has been seen as the definitive account of the divergence of the two Germanys, as seen from the East. Yet Wolf's own position within the East German state was not simple, and she later questioned whether her own memories were reliable. Producer Paul Kobrak.
