Most Americans go to church expecting to hear about salvation, morality and scripture. They don't anticipate hardball political endorsements. But some churches thrive on delivering politics from the pulpit. Sure, pastors are citizens, too. And so in other venues, such as op-eds, blogs, books, and other places of influence, a pastor may speak his mind. Even so, he must jealously guard that influence and always speak winsomely. As a gospel minister, he shouldn't make politics more important than his pastoral duties. The tax code prevents religious institutions from serving as political machines, a concept in keeping with the separation of church and state our founding fathers envisioned. Pastors cannot make declarations to favor or oppose any candidate from the pulpit. They cannot take money from the collection plate and give it to support a candidate. And if they want to participate in any partisan activity in their personal capacity, they must make sure it is done in a manner indicating it is separate from their religious institution. The Rev. Dr. Timothy C. Ahrens began his ministry as Senior Minister of First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in downtown Columbus on January 23, 2000. A church known for its witness to social justice since its birth as an abolitionist congregation in 1852, Rev. Ahrens is the fifth consecutive senior minister from Yale Divinity School and is a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ. Rev. Ahrens is a 1980 graduate of Macalester College with a double major in Religious Studies and Political Science. Since January 2000, under his leadership, First Church has doubled in membership during an era when seven downtown churches have closed their doors. Rev. Ahrens earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary in May 2015. His thesis was entitled: “Young and Growing Stronger: Creating a Model of 21st Century Prophetic Witness Leaders with a New Generation.” He is currently working on two books.
Tana Elias has more than three decades of experience at the Madison Public Library. After one year in the role, she's “just settling in” to the position as Director of the MPL.Elias sits down with Madison Book Beat host David Ahrens for a conversation about the history, funding, services and evolution of the Madison Public Library system, which has nine libraries in the city, operates the mobile Dreambus service, and is now building an “Imagination Center” on the north side.Elias and Ahrens also take up the changing role of libraries in the digital age. Contrary to the notion of a library dealing in books only, today's Madison Public Libraries function as a community hub and resource — giving everything from seeds to art to yes, digital and physical books to the community. They also discuss the threat of losing federal funding, and the significant milestone for MPL coming up this year: 150 years of service.

This podcast episode features an interview of Chris Ahrens of the San Diego Unified School District. After graduating from SUNY Brockport with a degree in physical education and completing a master's program on an OSEP grant, he has spent the last 15 years working in various positions in the San Diego Unified School District until he reached the position of lead APE teacher. They discussed the way in which podcasts connect APE teachers and allow different perspectives to be shared. He discusses lessons he learned the hard way through podcasting, like how to be flexible and how to disagree politely and respectfully. Ahrens has mild cerebral palsy and had a nine-year career with the U.S. Men's National Paralympic Soccer Team and was recently a finalist for the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Soccer was a huge part of his life, and he described the excitement of watching World Cup games during his childhood and how the transformational power of sports can lift people up. Next, they have dived into how the pandemic has affected the field of education, with a focus on the mental health of students. When looking back on his career up until this point, he stated that in every school situation he found himself in, he left it better than he found it. He advises Masters APE students to rock the boat, as they have the unique opportunity to change the field for the better. When looking forward to the next 20 years of the field, he compares the rise of online programs versus traditional hands-on experience, as these careers in the APE field require hands-on practice to be successful.

"Ragtime: The Musical," with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally, is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by E.L. Doctorow. It's two-and-a-half hours of intense beauty and heartbreaking grief, and frankly, all three of us choked up a little while recording this episode. The (incredibly intricate) plot follows the intersecting lives of three groups in the early 20th century: African Americans, upper-class white suburbanites, and Eastern European immigrants. Set against the backdrop of New York City, the story delves into themes of racial tension, social upheaval, and the pursuit of the American Dream, weaving vibrant, moving music with compelling narratives. The characters navigate love, loss, racism, feminism, and the evolving landscape of a dysfunctional nation in flux, all while singing some of the most gorgeous lyrics and music that ever flowed from Ahrens and Flaherty's pens. (And somehow we managed to squeeze in a tribute to the amazing Marin Mazzie, too!) So get yer hanky ready -- it's time to dust off this musical gem and explore the masterpiece that is "Ragtime: The Musical." *We'd love to hear from you! While your writing is important to you, the audience is often trying to spend as little time as possible processing what you've sent. Virtually everyone skims, especially in the context of work. Using fewer words make it more likely that people will engage with the message at all, much less taken action. Addressing fewer ideas often helps people engage better. Studies show better results for calls to action when fewer ideas are presented in a single communication. Asking busy readers for more can cause them to do less. Be mindful about the number of requests you are making in writing and eliminate those which aren't essential. In a riveting episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, host Tony Brueski explored the enigmatic case of Bryan Kohberger, a criminal justice graduate student accused of committing a heinous crime: the murder of four college students. To gain further perspective, Brueski invited Deborah Ahrens, a former public defender and current Professor of Law at Seattle U School of Law, to discuss the complex aspects of this case. The striking narrative put forward by Ahrens draws an eerie parallel between the case and the plot of the 2002 movie "Murder by Numbers," in which two highly intelligent high school students devise the 'perfect' murder. Ahrens proposed a theory that Kohberger, deeply embedded in the study of criminal justice, may have attempted a similar tactic. She stated, "The state's theory it looks like is probably going to be that that's exactly what, what he was trying to do - get away with a perfect murder and try to use some of the knowledge he has about how police track people to evade detection." Nevertheless, the burning question that both Ahrens and Brueski grappled with, a question that lingers in the minds of the public as well, is what led Kohberger down this chilling path. The discussion delved into the various breadcrumbs of Kohberger's past, such as his writings online and a growing sense of disconnection from family and friends. Yet, as Ahrens remarked, these signs do not definitively lead to such violent acts, given that the vast majority of people who feel isolated or disconnected never resort to violence. The podcast episode further examined Kohberger's interactions within the academic world, where he was a master's student and teaching assistant. Ahrens suggested that the ways in which some people have described his interactions as being "off" might be more indicative of his attitudes, presenting yet another breadcrumb leading to the understanding of Kohberger's character. One of the key topics of discussion was the early statement made by Kohberger's assigned public defender, Ann Taylor, who stated that her client looks forward to being exonerated. This sparked debate, with Ahrens questioning the choice to release such a strong statement so early in the process. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
