ALRIGHT, YA HOSERS, GRAB YOUR PLAID TRAPPER HAT, YOUR MOOSEHEAD, AND YOUR BIGGEST BOWL OF POUTINE – WE'RE CHECKING OUT SOME CANADIAN HORROR MOVIES! You can't talk about the greatest horror and exploitation films of the ‘70s and ‘80s without including our neighbors to the North. Canadian horror – or canuxploitation – is a broad subject that covers several subgenres, so Gabe and returning guest Jim Laczkowski have limited their scope to four favorites that don't include David Cronenberg or Bob Clark: Alan Ormsb & Jeff Gillen's Deranged (1974), Peter Carter's Rituals (aka: The Creeper, 1977), Murray Markowitz's I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses (1978), and Sandor Stern's Pin (1988). 00:00 – Intro (What is canuxploitation?) 09:52 – Deranged 28:45 – Rituals 55:22 – I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses 1:12:32 – Pin 1:34:56 – Outro and recommendations

La sortie de Imaginary le mois dernier nous a donné le goût de revisiter un classique du cinéma canadien, le film Pin de Sandor Stern sorti en 1988! There is something undeniably freaky about puppets and mannequins. This time in the cave we look at two movies which feature this fact at the core of their stories. We start off with "Magic" from 1978. Directed by Richard Attenborough and starring true Hollywood heavyweights Anthony Hopkins, Ann-Margaret and Burgess Meredith, and with a script by the legendary William Goldman, based on his own novel...it's no suprise that it's great! This is a dark tale of derangement and psychosis, with young Anthony Hopkins turning in a powerful performance. It's great, watch it! We follow that with 1988's "Pin" from director Sandor Stern. This is a bizarre family drama where a strict father has convinced his children that the medical mannequin in his office can speak. Using ventriliquism, he lets the mannequin handle key moments of fatherly advice and this produces two VERY disturbed children who grow up to be VERY disturbed teenagers. It's weird and disturbing but also well-shot and assembled. Listen in to find out if it sounds like it's for you. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. You can also reach us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Sorry about the audio quality. There were some technical issues that have been resolved, but we didn't realize until we had finished recording.
Dan and Vicky discuss the 1998 Canadian psychological thriller Pin from writer/director Sandor Stern starring David Hewlett, Cynthia Preston, Terry O'Quinn and the voice of Breaking Bad actor Jonathan Banks. Stern is most famous for penning The Amityville Horror from 1979. Your hosts discuss the cult favorite along with plenty of recently seen including the horror docuseries In Search of Darkness, 1965's Red Beard, the Michael Jordan biopic Air, Shudder's The Apology, and several classics like The Secret Garden, Celine and Julie Go Boating, The Hucksters and Ida Lupino's The Hitch-Hiker. Every year, as Halloween approaches, Film Comment Co-Deputy Editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute are forced to confront one of their greatest fears: horror movies. For this year's festivities, they invited two horror experts—Violet Lucca, web editor at Harper's Magazine, and Maddie Whittle, Programming Assistant at Film at Lincoln Center—to inflict some scary movies upon them. Violet and Maddie selected a couple underground favorites: Mohammed Shebl's bonkers 1981 Egyptian horror musical Fangs and Andy Milligan's low-budget sleaze-fest The Body Beneath (1970). As it turned out, these vampire outings aren't all that frightening, but they challenge and expand commonplace notions of horror cinema with their play with genre, sexuality, and political commentary. The group also talked about some other picks: Mahakaal, an '80s Bollywood remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, Sandor Stern's Canuxploitation classic Pin, and more.
This week we dived into the 1979 film The Amityville Horror!Tagline:For God's sake, GET OUT!"Newlyweds and their three children move into a large house where a mass murder was committed. American filmmaker Rodney Ascher is a master of the weird documentary. Whether he be exploring wild interpretations of a classic horror film in Room 237, bracketing the phenomenon of sleep paralysis in The Nightmare, studying the uncanny power of the moving image in "Primal Screen," or considering the sinister power of a kitschy logo in "The S from Hell," Ascher confronts his viewers with realities that resist final explanations and facile reduction. In this episode, Phil and JF follow Ascher's films into the living labyrinth of a strange universe that isn't just unknown, but radically unknowable.
