We weren't expecting this miniseries on Dwayne Johnson to be so relevant, but as he debuted his “new look” at the Venice Film Festival and began his awards season campaign, Laci and Matt react to the news of the week and unpack his public comments. Johnson reflected on his own career with many of the thoughts we've had as we've gone through his filmography. Is he sincere about it, or just being a good politician trying to win an award? Does he mean it when he says he was ready to pivot to “serious acting” or he was forced to by having so many consecutive box office failures? And is Emily Blunt really his best friend? Does it matter? We take the new information and give our concluding thoughts on the acting career of The Rock, and then rank the nine movies we covered during the summer. And then, we answer some mailbag questions, including: Fuck/Marry/Kill: The duck who shows her tits in Howard the Duck, tiny Dwayne Johnson in Tooth Fairy, and the Thanksgiving turkey from Spider-Man? What relationship from any movie sums up our relationship? Is there a movie that strikes both of us in such a way that we connect over it? What are some underrated movie sequels? What makes us passionate about movies and TV? What movie makes us fight? The Summer of Rock is our summer 2025 miniseries covering the movie career of Dwayne Johnson through nine movies, presented in chronological order. Starting with his attempt at crossing over from the world of wrestling, The Rock's career got off to a bumpy start before finally taking off in the 2010s. But it wasn't long before the bumps returned, and we'll be telling the story for you all summer long! Next week: FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992). Bonus video: Matt does a deep dive into Tower of Terror (1997), the made-for-TV movie starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst and based on the Disney theme park ride  English-language: https://youtu.be/kQf9FbCcbn4  Subscribe to our Patreon, Load Bearing Beams: Collector's Edition for $5 a month to get two extra episodes! https://patreon.com/loadbearingbeams    Time stamps: 01:00 — Dwayne Johnson at the Venice Film Festival 34:38 — Ranking the Summer of Rock movies 37:02 — Mailbag   Sources: “Dwayne Johnson Gets Choked Up Discussing ‘The Smashing Machine' in Venice” by Patrick Brzeski | The Hollywood Reporter (2025) - https://bit.ly/487IeV4  "Dwayne Johnson Uncontrollably Sobs as ‘The Smashing Machine' Gets 15-Minute Venice Standing Ovation and Generates Oscar Buzz" by Rebecca Rubin & Ramin Setoodeh | Variety (2025) - https://bit.ly/466fCsG   Artwork by Laci Roth. This week, we review The Bedroom Window (1987), Curtis Hanson's suspenseful neo-noir thriller steeped in voyeurism, deception, and moral ambiguity. Quentin Tarantino recommended it so we thought why not. Steve Guttenberg stars as Terry, a Baltimore businessman who becomes entangled in a murder investigation after his affair with his boss's wife, played by Isabelle Huppert, leads him to report a crime he didn't actually witness. Elizabeth McGovern co-stars as the potential next victim, drawing Terry deeper into a dangerous cat-and-mouse game. With a Hitchcockian setup of mistaken identity and unreliable perception, this film raises intriguing questions about truth, responsibility, and the cost of good intentions gone awry.Is seeing believing, or is lying for love a killer move? Can we talk about how great Steve Guttenberg is? He is obviously a terrific actor and has been working longer than I've been alive, but he is also just such a source of positivity— I could have kept talking to him for hours! You of course know Steve Guttenberg from iconic roles like Michael Kellam in Three Men and a Baby, Carey Mahoney in Police Academy or Jack Bonner in Cocoon. Since that time he has really matured into a character actor and he continues to act in TV and movies all the time. We talk about how he has gone about building a career that lasts and how he surrounds himself with grounded, positive people. We also have a moving conversation about his book Time to Thank, in which he writes about his experience being a caregiver for his father toward the end of his life. If you are in need of a pump-up speech or a dose of happy positivity, this is the episode for you! Be sure to stick around after our conversation for the Hindsight where my producer Jeph and I talk about all things Guttenberg, including the absolutely insane story he tells about sneaking onto the Paramount lot when he was a teenager. On this episode of The Adam Carolla Show, actor and cultural icon Steve Guttenberg calls in! Adam kicks things off by asking Steve about his experience during the Palisades fires, and the two dive into the state's slow and confusing rebuilding efforts. Adam praises Guttenberg's classic film Diner, and they share stories about their early days breaking into the entertainment business. Steve recalls his time at The Groundlings, where he met the legendary Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman), and they discuss the 40th anniversary of Police Academy. Adam asks Steve what kind of sandwiches his mom used to make for him growing up, then delivers Steve his earth-shattering sandwich rating.Later, Jason “Mayhem” Miller joins Adam for the news. First, they break down a bizarre story out of the Hollywood Hills where a suspected arsonist was caught in the act and stopped by fitness influencers on the Runyon Canyon hiking trail. Firefighters had to deploy both ground and aerial resources to contain the blaze, which had already spread to a quarter-acre. Then, they discuss a shocking double homicide in Encino involving longtime American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband Thomas Deluca. Police responded to a welfare check and discovered both victims dead in their home, with signs pointing to a violent home invasion days earlier. A 22-year-old suspect has been arrested and is facing murder charges as the LAPD continues its investigation.Get it on.FOR MORE WITH STEVE GUTTENBERG:MOVIE: Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson StoryINSTAGRAM: @steveguttenbergTWITTER: @steve_guttenberFOR MORE WITH JASON “MAYHEM” MILLER: INSTAGRAM & TWITTER: @mayhemmillerWEBSITE: www.mayhemnow.com Thank you for supporting our sponsors:BetOnlineHomes.comForThePeople.com/ADAMoreillyauto.com/ADAMSHOPIFY.COM/carollaPluto.tvLIVE SHOWS: July 17 - Plymouth, WIJuly 19 - Plymouth, WIJuly 20 - Milwaukee, WIAugust 6 - Reno, NVAugust 7 - Portland, ORSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Check into Castle Plunkett for a supernatural comedy that mashes together horny ghosts, Irish folklore, and peak ‘80s weirdness: High Spirits! Commissioned by Sydney in Texas—lover of Beetlejuice, Elvira, and men of questionable taste—this forgotten flick from 1988 boasts an absurdly stacked cast: Steve Guttenberg, Daryl Hannah, Beverly D'Angelo, Peter O'Toole, Jennifer Tilly, and a young Liam Neeson playing a ghostly creep. Gene and Big D dive into a movie that's half Scooby-Doo, half ghost-sex fever dream. They explore the film's jarring tonal shifts, from slapstick hauntings to surprisingly dark (and wet) ghost lore, complete with a mermaid musical battle and “skelping”—a euphoric ghost-human contact that raises some ethical eyebrows. Is High Spirits an underrated gem or a tonal trainwreck haunted by studio meddling? Would Jack have stayed loyal to his ghost bride if she kept her crumbling corpse form? And why are the castle's real ghosts so damn lazy? You can't stop the music, although a lot of people wanted to when The Village People's 1980 movie musical came out. Released in the wake of the infamous "Disco Demolition Night" in which rock fans burned disco albums, its appeal to its natural constituency was blunted by its strange tone. A film that is extremely squeamish around sexuality yet far freer with the drugs and nudity than a PG-certificate film ought to be, it's as mismatched as the band's famously eclectic stage outfits, though much less successful.Join Graham and Film Stories's Mark Harrison as they explore Can't Stop the Music's part in the creation of the Golden Raspberry awards, the surprisingly heavily contested origin of the 'YMCA' dance, Caitlyn Jenner's acting abilities and the Village People's post-fame afterlife from bar mitzvahs to - oh yes - Presidential Inaugurations. Plus, find out which controversial film was shooting at the same time as this, and why Mark's tangents need to have a Burial soundtrack. If you'd like to help us help Steve Guttenberg make it in the music biz, you can donate to our Patreon, where we're publishing regular reviews of The Twilight Zone and The X-Files, plus Outside the Blue Box, our series about what Doctor Who's cast and crew do in their time off. All this and a monthly bonus podcast! Find out more by following us on Instagram and Facebook.
