On Episode 151 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis continues the celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE! This film is a 1979 American science fiction drama directed by Robert Wise. It is based on and stars the cast of the 1966–1969 television series Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, who serves as producer. In the film, set in the 2270s, a mysterious and powerful alien cloud known as V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of the recently refitted Starship Enterprise to lead it on a mission to determine V'Ger's origins and save the planet. Along with special guest co-host Stan Woo (of Yorktown: A Time to Heal fame), assisting Curtis in this endeavor in an exclusive interview is TODD RAMSAY, the editor of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Ramsay previously worked as assistant or associate film editor on MGM's That's Entertainment! (1974), Paramount Pictures' Lipstick (1976), and The Car (1977, featuring James Brolin, Kim Richards, Kyle Richards, and music by Leonard Rosenman). After Star Trek, he edited such classics as Escape from New York (1981), The Thing (1982), and Black Moon Rising (1986). In this interview, Todd talks about his career in and out of Star Trek. He also debunks several urban legends about the making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It's a wonderful trip down memory lane filled with minutia and obscurity which you'll only hear right here on RetroZest! Incidentally, you may help the RetroZest podcast by purchasing a unique T-Shirt or two (many different designs and colors!) from our store at store.retrozest.com/home. Graham travels to California for a sitdown with one of the most successful actors of the 21st century, Josh Brolin. Part of massive franchises like The Avengers and Dune, Brolin remembers the struggles of making it in Hollywood before his breakout role in No Country for Old Men. He shares stories from the set, like almost getting in a fight with Denzel Washington and how Quentin Tarantino helped him with an audition. The son of actor James Brolin, Josh recalls an interesting upbringing in Paso Robles, CA where he grew up around wild animals that his mother fostered. Brolin also talks about his sobriety and how it changed his relationship with his children.
Halloween Week = extra episodes! Ryan talks by himself here about the 1979 Amityville Horror...and a little about the other Amityville flicks too...all of which are based on a horrific real-life tragedy that led to a (possibly made-up) haunting in that same house. James Brolin and Margot Kidder play newlyweds who move into a place on Long Island with her 3 kids, then it starts messing with all of them...especially Brolin's mind. Chairs rock on their own, furious flies fill a room, fathers get mad and walls bleed...but will the Lutzes listen to what Rod Steiger heard early on and "GET OUT"? In any case, for God's sake, download the 620th edition of Have You Ever Seen as Stuart Rosenberg's fairly-effective horror show is discussed in fairly humorous detail. Starting with a cheeky debate on whether a fleshlight could break from overstimulation ("asking for a friend"), the conversation quickly moves to exciting horror rumors. Johnny speculates on the possibility of a new Friday the 13th movie set on a frozen lake, envisioning a holiday-themed Jason Voorhees wreaking havoc during family gatherings. He also talks about Nocturne's return for a second season and his love for Alucard from Castlevania, weighing him against Vampire Hunter D. The episode's main feature is a deep dive into the 1977 cult horror film The Car, where a possessed black Lincoln Continental terrorizes a desert town. Johnny provides fascinating trivia about the film's production, including its eerie connection to James Brolin's personal life and the car's creepy horn blasts that heighten the tension. The show covers everything from the film's side characters, including hot teachers and a cowboy sheriff, to Johnny's surprise at how much he actually enjoyed the movie. Ending on a high note, Johnny rates The Car a "Binge Now," encouraging listeners to experience the surprisingly sinister ride for themselves. A report from Springfield, OH on Haitian pet eating, rando driveway sex in Farmington Hills, MTV VMAs recap, Shannon Sharpe strains to explain, Angel Reese's terrible podcast, an Ozempic overdose, and Jim's Pick: The Best Dave Grohl Songs. Talk Tuah is rising the podcast charts. Angel Reese's Podcast is doing great as well. Big surprise...Both podcasts suck. Shannon Sharpe breaks his silence after allegedly going live on Instagram while "engaging in adult activities." AB weighs in with a hilarious and predictable tweet. Can you overdose on Ozempic? He also complains about The Big House wifi, didn't watch the Presidential Debate, takes Tyreek Hill's side v. the police, declare Deshaun Watson finished, thinks Braylon Edwards and Denard Robinson will win suing the NCAA, and he gives his Detroit Lions prediction for this Sunday. Another hot school teacher from Missouri hooked up with a 17 year old student. We're still waiting for an update on why anyone, including the kid's dad, is in trouble. Jessica Dupnack knocks this story out of the park. Two people pull over into a random Farmington Hills home's driveway to "get. it. on." This guy also got it on outside... but with a cucumber. Social media model, Maecee Lathers, was high on "pink cocaine". She got into a brutal car accident. Reporter Rosh Lowe ended up becoming the "literal" star of the story. YouTube star Tyler Oliviera went to Springfield, Ohio to talk to actual residents about the pets being eaten. Why is no one in the mainstream media doing this? Nepo Brats take over fashion runways. Speaking of nepo babies, James Brolin's unfamous son is a fat ass. And he only owns one sock, one Batman shirt, a pair of jean shorts, and an unmatching pair of shoes. So he's got that going for him. What's that, by the side of the road? Is that a... vomiting nun, played by star of stage and screen Irene Dailey? And what's that, up in the sewing room? Is that a... priest covered in flies, played by Oscar-winner Rod Steiger? However you feel about it, there's no question that Stuart Rosenberg's O.G. This month Nelson brings to the table a film Longino has nether seen nor heard of: the 70s conspiracy theory thriller, Capricorn One. Inspired by the theory that the moon landing was staged, this fictional adventure depicts a government conspiracy to fake a landing on Mars. Will this viewing take off like a rocket or crash in the desert? Listen and find out!
What's this, a well-regarded science fiction conspiracy thriller which featured an all-star cast and yet no one remembers it?? Well yeah if this film happens to come out the same year as Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind....two BEHEMETHS from this era directed by master filmmakers/household names George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg respectively. Whereas this was directed by Peter Hyams....who actually built up a nice filmography himself over the next ten years including Running Scared, Outland, and 2010: The Year We Make Contact. And this being his breakout success which he also wrote, it has ONE hell of a doozy of a plot....Three astronauts (James Brolin, Sam Waterston, O.J. Simpson) are about to embark on a TRULY historic adventure, THE first manned mission to the planet of Mars! Except they're not actually going to Mars....they're supposed to stay on Earth and ONLY they are to know this. Hmmm....it's a massive space program conspiracy lead by the late, great Hal Holbrook who is orchestrating it from NASA. Fortunately there is ONE brave reporter who is out to uncover the truth and he's played by Elliott Gould. :) And of course don't underestimate the crazy aerial hijinks of a crazy crop-duster pilot played by the late, great Telly Savalas too while you're you're at it. :) Admit to yourself that it sounds intriguing. Hillary has been an admirer of Barbra Streisand's throughout her remarkable career, and a friend since they first met back in 1992. There's lots to admire about this iconic singer, actor, writer, producer, and director, known for her best-selling albums, performances on stage and screen, and activism. “Funny Girl”, “The Way We Were”, “Yentl”, and “A Star Is Born” are just a few of the titles that remind us of the profound impact Barbra's made on our cultural landscape. Now, she's added a new achievement to the list, with the release of her highly anticipated, expansive, and entertaining memoir: My Name is Barbra. She joins Hillary for a wide-ranging conversation about how she made her way from a cramped apartment in Flatbush, Brooklyn to the EGOT winner she is today; her special friendship with Hillary's mother-in-law Virginia; and her unflinching honesty, which played out to comic effect on the first date with her now-husband of twenty-five years, James Brolin. We're closing the yearbook on 2018 with a criminally underappreciated TV series, Life in Pieces. This show contained a fantastic cast including James Brolin, Dianne Wiest, Colin Hanks, and Betsy Brandt, among others. And if you liked Modern Family, you would be sure to love this too. We break down the cast, a classic episode, and much more. While fantastic, the series only ran 3 1/2 seasons. Giff, who chose this one, felt it was too short of a run. So we decided to draft our favorite TV series that ended too soon. Who was the lucky one to get first pick, and therefore, Freaks and Geeks? Find out now!If you enjoy the show, please rate and review us on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts app or wherever you listen. Please join us in wishing a happy house-warming to our host Nick Leamy! Nick detailed some of the home-buying headaches he and his family were dealing with back in our SPOOKIES episode, but that's all been settled and everyone's settling into a lovely new home. To celebrate this, we asked Nick to pick a movie to celebrate and he chose the original THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979), from director Stuart Rosenberg and starring Margot Kidder, James Brolin and Rod Steiger. Our opinions run a pretty wide spectrum on this one, which made for a fun discussion and we really hope everyone enjoys listening! Let's face it. You can't say no to those 1979 haunted house prices. 80K for a waterfront 4 bedroom with a guest house? If you ever wonder how characters stick it out so long in films like "The Amityville Horror" (1979), it's because you can't find houses that cheap! We contrast the film with the Conjuring and ask the big questions like why don't paranormal investigators have dogs? What's up with the blood soup club in the basement? Does Lois Lane need to practice ballet in her lingerie before bed? What purpose does the cop serve? How much wood did Brolin have to chop to make this film? Running Scared co-hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts dive into this horror classic that set the standard for haunted house movies including an amazing performance by Rod Steiger. We admit it, we're a little bit tired after all of the live show excitement, so we wanted to change things up and share a Patreon exclusive episode with you today.Almost exactly 26 years ago, a show premiered on Fox that asked viewers to test the limits of their imaginations. Originally hosted by James Brolin on May 25, 1997, the reigns were then passed to Jonathan Frakes for the next three seasons. With his dramatic delivery of cheesy lines and the most Canadian-looking production, the cult classic Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction found its way into our hearts and most frighteningly, our minds. We hope you enjoy a sneak peek at our new Patreon exclusive series called Deduce!
