There's an art to doing sci-fi and action on an indie budget...On this special episode we're diving into two of our favourite things, Science Fiction and Canadian cinema with the new film 'Levels' that opens in theatres tomorrow!Levels is the story of a young man (Peter Mooney) who after witnessing his girlfriend (Cara Gee) get murdered in front of his eyes goes on a journey where he has to risk it all; including his grasp on reality in order to discover the truth. It's a great entry into a very thoughtful off shoot of the genre as we get roped into it all via some excellent execution in storytelling and some great performances. In advance of the films release we had the pleasure of sitting down with one of the stars of the film David Hewlitt about how he got the job, the joys of science-fiction and so very much more.

Cube was one such project. (Source: Sardonicast 150 [timestamp: 00:16:09])There's a perpetual unease and oppression to Cube that meshes well with its pacing. One angle about Cube's story is that of how there are unwitting participants in systematic issues. The characters are all named in reference to prison, although not all the characters are named after prison's, as Kathryn learned down the grapevine.Melvin, "[Cube] at some point is a math movie."Melvin talks about his current fascination with numbers as a definitive thing a world of excessive subjectivities.Because the setting and scenario of the cube is so static, the film allows for complex, dynamic character interactions.Thoughts on the ending, and the cube as a metaphor for life.Recommendations:Authority by Jeff VanderMeer (2014) (Book)Saw (2004) (Movie)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! Tremors movie review from the Salty Nerds has them debating on whether or not this movie is an underrated classic, or simply a fun monster movie that's gained cult status over the years. In Tremors (1990), Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, and Michael Gross (whose character Burt Gummer goes on to be the main character of the franchise) fight a bunch of underground graboids that have a hunger for human flesh and really, really good ears. This movie started the Tremors franchise and is directed by Ron Underwood with a screenplay from Short Circuit scribes S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock. It's an unusual monster movie that has just the right amount of campy terror and tension. Joining the Salty Nerds for their review is none other than Stargate Atlantis actor David Hewlett, who's also a big fan of this movie!
