"'I'm not a violent person. But this guy... I would kill him with a hammer. I'd smash his whole head with a hammer."Welcome to the tenth episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events. On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers look at and discuss the Oscar nominated film from director Kleber Mendonça Filho: The Secret Agent. Released in 2025. This year at the 98th Annual Academy Awards, the film was nominated for four Oscars. One of the nominations was for Wagner Moura in the Best Actor category. Wagner Moura plays Armando who is using the name Marcelo as a cover. Set in 1977 during a time of mischief and political turmoil in Brazil under military dictatorship, Armando travels to Recife during the carnival holiday. His son Fernando is there, living with Armando's late wife Fátima's family. He is former professor and is trying to escape and flee the country. In order to not face any persecution for what happened years before the events of the film. The Secret Agent is a blend of so many different styles and tones. At it's heart is a Neo-Noir-ish historical political thriller, but it does seamlessly shift into bizarre but compelling territories. A sophisticated film made for grown ups and is shot and told in an unconventional way. We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for more episodes of this Fascism On Film series.Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. We've previously seen Bacurau, writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho's last film, which we loved, and find The Secret Agent a similarly fascinating depiction of political corruption and persecution in Brazil, though much more grounded and fleshed out, particularly given the historical setting in 1977, at which time Brazil was subject to a military dictatorship. To José, who grew up in Franco's Spain, The Secret Agent's depiction of life under fascism richly, and scarily, evokes the dynamics at play in such a society. As Wagner Moura's protagonist discovers, simply upsetting the wrong person can be enough to have hitmen sent after you. Mike argues that the film takes too long to get going - in developing its picture of the lawless world in which Moura joins other political refugees and a dissident network, it makes us wait to find out who he is and why he's among that group. José doesn't share that assessment, finding the time well spent and trusting the film's pacing. We discuss the flights of fancy, including an animated segment which dramatises news reports of a supposedly supernatural severed leg killing people (in fact, the police and media are all too happy to make use of the nonsensical urban legend to cover up their extrajudicial murders); Moura's performance, which earned him an Oscar nomination; the generations' differing attitudes to maintaining historical records and keeping the past alive; and the hereditary aspect of positions of power, in which such figures as the police chief, wealthy industrialists, and even contract killers are always accompanied and assisted by their sons. Recorded on 2nd March 2026.

Send us Fan MailWe sit down to review The Secret Agent (O Agente Secreto), the Brazilian political thriller that earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture and had Wagner Moura — best known for playing Pablo Escobar in Narcos — winning awards on the international circuit for his performance.Set in 1977 in Recife, Brazil, the film follows a tech expert with a shadowy past who returns to his hometown hoping to find refuge, only to discover the corruption there runs too deep to hide from. It's a slow-burn, character-driven thriller that draws comparisons to films like The Conversation, and it clocks in at a hefty two hours and 41 minutes — so is it worth your time?We break down the plot, the performances, the stunning period filmmaking, and what makes this one so hard to pin down. We also dig into the ambiguity baked into the story — the loose ends, the unanswered questions, and whether a second viewing might be necessary to fully appreciate what director Kleber Mendonça Filho is doing. Plus, Mike has some strong opinions about whether a foreign film should have been in the Best Picture race at all. It's currently streaming on Hulu, so if you've got a free night and nothing to watch, this one might be exactly what you're looking for.New episodes every week at ohbpodcast.com. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing THE SECRET AGENT (2025) from writer/director Kleber Mendonça Filho. A research scientist named Armando (Wagner Moura) flees the political repression of 1977 São Paulo for his hometown of Recife, adopting a false identity to evade a corrupt businessman and the military regime. While hiding in a safe house filled with fellow dissidents, he navigates a surreal and paranoid landscape during Carnival, desperate to reunite with his young son and secure his family's future before his cover is blown. As he searches government archives for his own mother's history, Armando becomes a target in a high-stakes game of surveillance and urban legends, where the line between a personal vendetta and state-sanctioned violence begins to blur. The film clocks in at 2 h and 41 m, is rated R and is available on Hulu but also available to buy/rent on Prime Video. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

This week, we revisit one of the more psychologically charged chapters of Lost, “The Other Woman,”an episode that pulls back the curtain on Juliet Burke's complicated past among the Others. Through flashbacks, we see her uneasy relationship with Ben Linus, whose manipulative affection curdles into something far more possessive and dangerous. The episode reframes Juliet's isolation on the island—not just as survival, but as emotional imprisonment. On the island in the present timeline, tensions mount as Juliet and Jack track Charlotte and Daniel to the Tempest station, uncovering a high-stakes threat involving toxic gas. What unfolds is less about action and more about trust: Who is lying? Who is protecting whom? And can Juliet ever truly escape Ben's shadow? We discuss how the episode deepens the moral ambiguity of the Others, strengthens Juliet's arc as one of the show's most quietly resilient characters, and continues Season 4's accelerating shift toward confrontation between the survivors and the freighter team. It's a character study wrapped in a ticking-clock thriller—and a reminder that on Lost, the most dangerous weapon is emotional leverage. From the humid paranoia of a mysterious island, we pivot to the suffocating tension of urban Brazil in The Secret Agent, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and starring Wagner Moura—a film that has been nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Actor for Wagner Moura, International Film for Brazil and Best Casting. If Lost explores control through personal manipulation, The Secret Agent scales that tension to the political and institutional. Moura delivers a magnetic performance as a man caught between ideology and survival, navigating a system built on surveillance and quiet coercion. Mendonça Filho directs with clinical patience, letting scenes breathe just long enough for discomfort to set in.The film thrives on atmosphere—its framing tight, its sound design oppressive, its moral universe murky. Moura's performance anchors the narrative with restrained intensity; he conveys paranoia not through grand gestures, but through stillness. Every glance feels monitored. Every silence feels weaponized. In our review, we unpack how the film interrogates state power and personal complicity, why its pacing may divide audiences, and how its craftsmanship—particularly in editing and cinematography—justifies its Academy recognition. We also explore the fascinating connective tissue between the episode of Lost and The Secret Agent: both center on characters trapped inside systems that demand loyalty while eroding autonomy. It's a conversation about control—romantic, political, psychological—and about what it means to resist when resistance itself may already be anticipated.Tune in as we move from the island to the surveillance state, from Ben Linus to bureaucratic menace, and from network television intrigue to Oscar-nominated cinema. And be sure to keep coming back every week for more reviews and most Lost discussion, only on the #talkintvpodcast

Want to know the story of how Chris Hewitt almost stepped on Florence Pugh's dress? Well, this isn't the podcast for you, as it features Chris and Helen O'Hara trying to tell that tale, from the press night of Cynthia Erivo's Dracula (sorry, Draclier), only to get sidetracked by a dozen different things and forget to finish it. But if you want to hear Chris, Helen, James Dyer, and John Nugent talk about movie characters falling from great heights, pay tribute to the great Robert Duvall, discuss the latest The Mandalorian And Grogu trailer, and review The Secret Agent, Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die, Wasteman and If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, this is the podcast for you. Oh, and Chris and Helen launch new careers as theatre reviewers too. Guest-wise, Harry Stainer talks to the Oscar-nominated star of the Brazilian thriller, The Secret Agent, one Wagner Moura, and his director, Kleber Mendonça Filho. It's a cracking episode, even if we're still nowhere nearer to finding a nickname for Tin Jim. Enjoy.
Brazil has been a rising star in international cinema. The Secret Agent, a political thriller set in 1977 about a researcher trying to escape the country for unknown reasons, is just the latest film from Brazil to gain critical acclaim. Directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and starring Wagner Moura, the film shows the tangible and intangible effects an authoritarian regime imposes on its people. Moura's character Marcelo, spends the film in hiding under an alias as he waits for assistance to get him and his son out of the country. Moura's central performance holds audiences in the precarious situation with him. The film has been nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best International Feature, Best Lead Actor (Wagner Moura), and Best Achievement in Casting. Today on FilmWeek, Larry Mantle speaks with actor Wagner Moura about the film and its reception abroad. The Secret Agent is still playing in select theaters.
