Send us a Question!MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kathryn joins Melvin to discuss one of the most pivotal anime-film releases to ever grace the silver-screen; Akira! This 1988 film not only pushed the genre of animation to its limits, it also introduced anime to the west as a serious new genre of entertainment! Does it still hold up? Spoilers: absolutely it does!Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 18-minutes discussing the ins-and-outs of the cyberpunk aesthetic, what makes it distinct from other sci-fi settings, and whether its our preference. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)The vibes are strong with Akira. The quality is strong with Akira. When Melvin first saw the film he liked it but wasn't impressed. This time around? Our latest Animaysterpiece event begins with Katsuhiro Otomo's legendary anime film Akira. In 1988, a mysterious explosion destroyed Tokyo and ushered in World War III. The year is now 2019, and Neo-Tokyo exists in a state of fear, corruption, and division. A member of the Capsule bike gang, Tetsuo, is kidnapped by the military after colliding with a strange, psychic child. His best friend and gang leader, Kaneda, joins an underground resistant movement in hopes of rescuing him. Meanwhile, Tetsuo starts developing psychic powers of his own. Corrupted by his new abilities, Tetsuo rampages across the city in order to free and confront the fabled esper Akira. Kaneda is determined to get through to his friend, but will a (really cool) motorcycle and a laser gun be enough to stop the coming apocalypse? This one is so serious we're not even gonna give you a comical list of things to do for today's exciting episode of Anime Was (Not) A Mistake! Forrest, Conan Neutron, and Kt Baldassaro talk about Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 animated cyberpunk action film Akira! Based on Katsuhiro Otomo's manga series of the same name, Akira is an action packed and incredibly stylish cautionary tale about scientific experimentation and the mindset that led to the development of nuclear weapons. In a Post-World War 3 Neo-Tokyo.. rebuilt after a massive explosion.. biker gangs roam a city with a badly corrupt government and increasingly powerful military that's on the brink of collapse. The Capsules, led by Shotaro Kaneda and his hapless best friend Tetsuo Shima, get thrown into the middle of a story that involves a secret government program to experiment on children, the anti-government resistance, a mysterious figure named Akira, and 3 psychic children called the Espers #akira #manga #katsuhirootomo #toho #epic #marvel #cyberpunk #tokyo #neo #neotokyo #moviepodcast #sciencefiction #scienceexperiment #moviepodcast #filmpodcast #movielovers #animation Akira is widely credited with bringing a new level of interest to American Audiences who had only just started our fascination with Manga and Japanese Pop Culture. It has also been pointed out that it got some predictions.. like the 2020 Tokyo Olympics... eerily right. It's round two of 'Ani-May' (still a clever title) and we asked the Patreons to pick one of two cyberpunk-themed heavy hitters. Yes, to Sophie's delight, we're going gritty instead of cutesy from the start with Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 anime movie Akira.  Despite the despair that occurs in this dytopian 'future', there is still beauty to be found - as Paul tries to point out to Sophie throughout the discussion. On top of that we have more 4K appreciation, anger at animated nudity, and contemplation on whether time would allow Paul to ever delve into the manga series...  Promo ad provided by Deconstructing Comics ------------------------------------------------------- Don't forget to follow us on social media in the links below, and let us know your thoughts and recommendations for the future!   instagram.com/sp_filmviewers twitter.com/SP_Filmviewers  letterboxd.com/SP_Filmviewers Rating and reviewing the show is a great help too! Oh wow. We've got a heater of an episode for you today. This time around, Sean and Brad are joined by first ever Queen Venerator guest Joe to discuss the work of Japanese video game publisher FromSoftware. Kind of. Look, there's a decent amount of discussion about FromSoft throughout their long, illustrious history, and yes Joe does a wonderful job conveying the true emotional pull these games can have on people, and yes we discuss Joe's infamously peculiar FromSoft collection. But lets face it, the Queen Venerator crew get distracted easily, so they break off into a multitude of tangents. The topics discussed are as wide-ranging as the Nick Jr. show Little Bear, David the Gnome, Total Recall, Shogun, Michael Mann specifically The Keep this time, Scott Glenn (of course), The Wire, Joe Lieberman meeting the Mortal Kombat Toasty guy in hell (I know its Dan Forden, calm down), the death of the Twitch Watch Party, Dan Ryckert's joy about Event Horizon, the 1991 Hiroyuki Kitakubo and Katsuhiro Otomo anime movie Roujin Z, the 1980 Troma released, kids-as-zombie-microwaves movie The Children, Cutlery Corner, MORE Siskel and Ebert talk, The Black Stallion: the greatest movie of ours and any generation, Justin Wong at Evo, Brad's continued Dead Cells obsession, Sean sneaking off to make memes, Sean surrupticiously eating a Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito, Maria Menounos and her cook books, Cheddar TV: TV for gas stations, Dragons Dogma 2 meat, Brad explains the Goo Crew and Joey's World Tour, Helldivers, Graveyard Keeper, those fake bowling animation videos, Ninja Gaiden, Low-G: The Low Gravity Man, and of course, Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects. Finally, we introduce two new segments on this show. First, we have what will clearly be a long-running feature: Sean Reads the Entirity of the Toxic Zombies Wikipedia Page, a real rollercoaster of emotions segment.  Finally, after months of threats, Brad finally unleashes his wretched creation on the world: The Board of Many Things, a fifty category monstrosity used to select the topic of the next show. What did Sean win from the one armed bandit this week? This isn't a mixed metaphor, stop saying its a mixed metaphor. Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1988 cyberpunk classic anime film, Akira  – written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, based on the legendary manga by Otomo. A secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath who can only be stopped by a teenager, his gang of biker friends and a group of psychics. This is the movie that started it all and introduced anime to mainstream Western audiences...and joining me today is my first guest on the podcast, none other than Mike Pecci. He is a filmmaker/podcaster out of LA and I've been listening to his excellent pod IN LOVE WITH THE PROCESS since 2020, plus he just released another pod on his network called RIGHT PLACE RIGHT TIME. Yep, so buckle up because it's going to be a fun ride! So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. If today's episode feels like a private chat among friends, that's no accident. I became acquainted with Nikolas Draper-Ivey shortly after he was announced as the series artist for Static: Season One -- the title that kicked off the Milestone Returns line at DC Comics. We've been building a solid rapport ever since, but I could never get him to sit for an interview -- until now.In this conversation, I ask Nik about his journey so far. He explains his origins as an artist, how he got the attention of Milestone Media's Reginald Hudlin & Denys Cowan, and what it's meant to be trusted with a beloved character like Static for a new generation of readers. Static: Shadows of Dakota is now available in hardcover from DC Comics/Milestone Media, and you can purchase it here. About Nikolas Draper-Ivey:Nikolas Draper-Ivey is an American illustrator based outside of New York City. Born in Lansing, Michigan in 1991. He grew up in Detroit, where his father first exposed him to Japanese animation with Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira. In his adolescence he discovered Shonen Jump Magazine.  This inspired him to pursue a career as a professional illustrator.  In 2010 he began his first semester at Savannah College Of Art & Design (SCAD) in Georgia as a Sequential Art major with a minor in Illustration. His style plays heavily on use of light and shadow and combines afro-futurist elements with hints of fantasy, hip-hop and punk culture and his love cinematography. His two biggest influences are Roger Deakins (Director of cinematography for Blade Runner 2049) and Takeshi Obata, (artist for Hikaru No Go, Death Note, BAKUMAN Platinum End).  In 2014, after moving to New York City, he had the chance to meet with his idols, Editor Koji Yoshida and mangaka Takeshi Obata who praised his early works as a “successful fusion of his Eastern and Western influences”.Currently, Draper-Ivey is working on his original work Dream Vesper, he firmly believes that his unique Afro-Asian futuristic art style can change the world For More from Comics Are Dope:Get This Week in Comics, our weekly e-mail newsletter: http://thisweekincomics.comSubscribe on YouTube: http://youtube.com/@comicsaredopeJoin our online Discussion Communities:Facebook - http://bjkicks.link/communityDiscord - http://bjkicks.link/discord

This week we bring you the final film we will cover in Season 4 and only our second anime film: Katsuhiro Otomo's “Akira”. Join the gang as Britt hits her sweet spot with both “Britt's Literary Corner” and her anime knowledge, we discuss the controversial ending, and just how cool this movie is. Also, did Adam only watch this with the dubbing on? Is 1988 the year animation “went clear”? Plus, this week Joey recommends Jordan Peele's “Nope” (on Prime), Adam recommends the Zoom-horror film “Host” (on Shudder & AMC+), and Britt recommends a different anime film – “Paprika” (on MUBI & The Criterion Channel). You can listen to us on Apple Podcast, Stitcher, Spotify, & Google Play. You can find us on Twitter, Instagram, & Facebook at facebook.com/1001by1. You can send us an email at 1001by1@gmail.com. “LEAVE ME ALONE!”Due to recent events in the film industry, Retro Grade Podcast decided to take a different approach to the movies we will cover on the podcast until the strikes are over in support of the unions. We will be covering films that are not under the companies being struck, starting with one of the greatest anime films of all time: Akira, directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, from 1988. We talk about how this very strange, at times confusing, violent and beautiful film fits in the conversation of nuclear power in the minds of film goers today with Oppenheimer's success at the summer box office. While Nolan's film tells the story from the perspective of the man that invented the bomb, what about the perspective of the people that survived it? Through the cyberpunk, alternative future of a post-WW3 Neo-Tokyo, perhaps Otomo offers that through Akira. This is the third animated film we've talked about on the podcast, and the second anime film after our Totoro episode. Fun fact, Totoro also came out the same year Akira did! We talk about how this film uses extreme detail, slow motion, violence, sound, and silence to give us a unique, enthralling experience. Starting with a high octane motorcycle chase, and ending with one of the most disturbing images we've seen since our Hellraiser episode. We talk about what makes Kaneda a different kind of protagonist. One that might not fit the hero archetype laid out by Joseph Cambell. We talk about the ensemble cast of characters whose individual actions (and even their names) are unknown to each other, despite them having so much screen time. Does Akira even have a main character? We don't really agree on this one, but maybe the underlying issue is part of Akira's DNA.What is Akira's DNA? Well, the film that was released in 1988, was based on the manga, (also created by Katsuhiro Otomo) that started in 1982 and ended in 1990. Yes, you read that right, the film came out while the manga was still in production. Although the film is a compromised version of the manga, Otomo was the one in charge of both. He chose what to change for the film, and in that process, likely changed how the manga would then end. We give a few examples on what the differences are, and maybe that might help us all understand what the film was trying to say.Interpretation of film is a fun, and enriching exercise that we love here on Retro Grade Podcast. Given the setting of a post-war Japanese government rebuilding a city that has been destroyed by an atomic force, a militaristic police force violently suppresses protesters while Bosozoku gangs of disgruntled teenagers battle on motorcycles.. It's safe to say this film is sort of about the reconstruction era of Japan post World War 2. However, there may be other things going on, and only looking at it through the lens of ‘post war trauma,' might be selling Akira short. We go through some think pieces on what Akira was about, and then provide our own analysis of what it means to us! Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

This unlocked bonus episode is a conceptual outtake from our second season. After we agreed to focus on Satoshi Kon's filmography for season two we then had to draw lines about exactly what qualified for that discussion. We settled on covering just the projects that Kon directed at the expense of the projects that he merely wrote. The last item that we cut was "Magnetic Rose", a short film written by Kon and directed by Koji Morimoto included in the anthology film Memories. Now ubiquitous on streaming services, Memories was concieved by Katsuhiro Otomo as the follow-up to his ubiquitous debut, Akira. This episode only covers "Magnetic Rose," the first and most well-regarded of its three segments. "Magnetic Rose" features some elements that would appear in Kon's directorial work, but it is also clearly distinct from the rest of his filmography for reasons that we enumerate in the episode. We also talk about "Solaris", "Alien", the A24 grief movie phenomenon, the pros and cons of anthologies, and more!
