The 59th and 60th verses take us back to the original narrative of Gita, where Arjuna was facing conflicts as he did not want to do an unpleasant duty. Lord Krishna says: “If instead of practicing karma yoga, you think you can run away from your duty, that is your fantasy. Your own swabhava will compel you to do the duty.”Swabhava is our inherent nature that determines our outlook to life and our actions. It is shaped by tendencies that we gather over many life cycles. Each jiva is a solitary traveler. He meets his parents and relatives as travelers meet in a train and then separate at the end of each life.Bhagavata Purana has the story of a king who crowned his young son as the heir apparent. Unfortunately, the son died and everyone was in grief. Narada and some sages visit him to console him. brings the son back to life, but the son was not able to recognize his parents. He said that he had many parents over many life cycles. This helped the king understand the wisdom of the sages. The story of Jada Bharata explains that life is not just one chance. We are not tools in the hands of destiny. We have enough freedom to build our destiny. King Bharata retired to a hermitage for spiritual practices but developed strong attachment towards a baby deer and forgot his spiritual practices. He was born as a deer in his next life, but under the effect of his samskaras, he stayed near a hermitage. In his next life, he was born as a great saint - Jada Bharata - always established in his identity with Atman. He did not lose his spiritual wealth, but his realization was delayed. We are imprisoned by our samskaras. At the same time, we can use our mind, our five senses of perception and five senses of action to accumulate good samskaras and control our destiny.61st verse: “God is present as the divine spark in everything and everyone. Sitting within everyone as the in-dweller, he regulates and operates this world just like an engineer operates a machine.”Vedanta does not emphasize a creator God. Rather it emphasizes the idea of God as the divinity within. We can manifest this divinity through spiritual practices and by being a good human being. Buddha is a good example of this, as he did not believe in a creator God.When we do noble actions for the good of others or as an offering to God, with a sense of sanctity and sacredness, we become spiritually elevated and the divinity within us begins to manifest.Swami Vivekananda said: “Live life in such a way that Good will accept you even if you do not accept Him.” Swami Vivekananda also said: “Religion is the manifestation of divinity already in man.” Spirituality transcends religion but does not reject religion.62nd verse: “Take refuge in the ultimate divine reality for your own spiritual good.”63rd verse: “You have listened to the great spiritual truth and My instructions. Now, you do whatever you want. Act according to your own conviction and understanding.”There is no compulsion from the teacher, Lord Krishna. He encourages the student to use his own intellect and conviction.64th verse: “I have taught you this great spiritual truth because I consider you as My dear disciple.”65th verse: “If you try to follow this path and be a steadfast devotee, you will attain the highest spiritual enlightenment.”66th verse: “When you feel that all your efforts are in vain, you should very sincerely and mentally give the entire responsibility to God. Then you do not have to worry about anything.”This verse describes the concept of Prapati or Sharanagati. According to Ramanuja, Prapati is the highest state of a devotee of God. Prapati means complete surrender and is composed of the following characteristics. (1) Always having a positive outlook in life, full of sattvic qualities such as serenity, wisdom, compassion, and broad mindedness. (2) Rejecting all the opposing qualities such as skepticism and self-doubt. (3) Strong faith that God will protect me. (4) Strong faith that God is the only protector. (5) A feeling of total helplessness and dependence on God (6) Total self-surrender (atmanikshepa). When the first five characteristics are fulfilled, atmanikshepa is the result. He then becomes an instrument in the hands of God and God operates through him. When we link ourselves to a higher ideal, we can develop the ability to remain unaffected from the outcome of our actions. For example, if we did something good to others but they are still ungrateful, we will not be affected.

Title: Navadha Bhakti – Nine Methods of Worship12th chapter: verse 1, 2, 3, 41st verse: Arjuna asks: “Some people worship God with name and form – they chant and pray. Others worship the imperishable, the unmanifest. Which is better?”Arjuna's question comes from a conflict he is facing. From earlier chapters, Arjuna knew that there are two ways of looking upon God. (1) God as the creator and protector, who listens to our prayers (2) God as the all-pervading divine spirit, transcending names and forms. Arjuna thought he could choose between God with form or God without form.It is not a matter of our intellectual choice. It is a matter of our own spiritual evolution. A ten-year-old boy has to attend primary school first – he cannot just choose to go to a university. Similarly, we need to start our spiritual life based on where we stand and what we are fit for. Even Buddha had to evolve through 543 life cycles before becoming Buddha.2nd verse: To encourage Arjuna and to have him focus on God with name and form, Lord Krishna answers in the second verse. “There are some devotees who put their whole mind on Me, they worship Me, and they are completely dedicated to Me. To them, I reveal My true nature. They are certainly great Yogis.”Lord Krishna continues with his answer in the 3rd through 20th verse.3rd and 4th verses: “But those higher spiritual seekers, who have their senses under control, who are even-minded, who are fully focused on the Atman as the divine spirit within them and as the all-pervading divine reality without names and forms – they also attain Me alone.”Normally our mind flows towards the external world through our senses of perception and action. These advanced seekers, when they think of God, they can keep their mind focused on that divine idea. Swami Vivekananda said: “Standing in the middle of market street in San Francisco, if you can meditate, then you are a Yogi.”For those who have not reached this higher state, they should set apart some time for spiritual practices in the middle of their secular activities. There are nine ways of connecting with God, as taught by Prahlada in the Bhagavata Purana. It is called Navadha Bhakti - Sravanam (Hearing about God), Kirtanam (Chanting His Name and Glory), Vishnu smaranam (Remembering Him), Pada sevanam (Serving His Lotus Feet), Archanam (Worshipping Him), Vandanam (Prostrating before Him), Dasyam (Being His Servant), Sakhyam (Befriending Him), and Atma Nivedanam (Surrendering to Him, also known as Prapatti or Sharanagati).Devotion comes when we give a spiritual orientation to our natural emotions and feelings – we divert these emotions towards God. When we do so, we get a feeling of inner fulfillment and contentment. Our ego can also be given a spiritual orientation. If we do not direct our ego towards good channels, it will go towards negative ones. Whatever we do, do as an offering. Then spiritual qualities will come to us. Finally, we can transcend ego.Prapatti or Sharanagati is the highest state of a devotee of God. Prapatti means complete surrender and is composed of the following characteristics. (1) Always having a positive outlook in life, full of sattvic qualities such as serenity, wisdom, compassion, and broad mindedness. (2) Rejecting all the opposing qualities such as skepticism and self-doubt. (3) Strong faith that God will protect me. (4) Total self-surrender.Such a devotee considers every hindrance as a blessing in disguise. He interprets every problem of life in a spiritual way.Bhagavata Purana has beautiful stories of devotion. Ajamila's story illustrates how devotion comes to our rescue at the time of death. Ajamila initially led a spiritual life but had a deviation later. His son's name was Narayana, synonym of Lord Vishnu. At the last moment, when he uttered Narayana to call his son, his mind went towards Lord Vishnu, and he attained liberation. In the Ishavasya Upanishad, there is a verse where a dying man pleads to his mind: “O my mind, remember all the good deeds you have done.” At the point of death, we feel helpless and want to hold on to something. We should have a storehouse of good thoughts that can give us a sense of fulfillment at the last moment. In Pantheism, when we equate nature to God, our mind begins to evolve spiritually. Ancestor worship reminds us that there is something beyond the body and makes us think beyond the empirical. In image worship, one does not equate the image to God. When a spiritual seeker worships an image, he first invokes and projects the all-pervading divine principle in that image.

In these two combined chapters, a man comes to Baba seeking Brahma Gyan. As the Leela unfolds, Baba plays along with his request, and in the process, shows the man his shortcomings, thereby instructing us on the most important aim of human life. This commentary is a compilation of similar Leelas that give us some more spiritual gems from Baba. Baba had unique ways of imparting knowledge. Sometimes, it was by asking for a specific amount of Dakshina; at other times, through parables or dreams, or through His touch. Mr. Tosher, alias Shri Narayan Ashram, says, “Baba's method of teaching was varied. He would, sometimes, simply touch the head of the devotee with His palm, which would have a certain kind of influence on the devotee. At other times, He pressed His hands on a devotee's head as though he was crushing out some of their lower impulses. On occasion, he would pat the devotee's back, or would pass His palm over their head. Each method had its own effect, affecting the sensations and feelings of the devotee. Apart from touch, He executed an invisible operation on the devotee, whereby He would bring about a great change in him.” This was experienced by Mr. Tosher (in 1913 or 1918), when Baba conveyed (without the use of touch or words) the feeling that differences between various souls, or for that matter, all differences were unreal, and that the only real thing was the Divinity which underlines all. The truth was not uttered in words by Baba before Narayan Ashram. This Leela was taken from the life of Shri Sai Baba, written by Narasimha Swamiji. Khaparde says, in his diary, that during Aarti, Baba gave him mystic glances, and all his questions were answered. At other times, he beat Ram Maruti Bua, who became ecstatic following the beating! Once, Baba lifted Maruti Bua above his head and whirled him around which helped Bua progress to the next stage of his spiritual journey. On Guru Purnima day, devotees placed books at Baba's feet for His blessings. Sometimes, Baba deliberately exchanged books between devotees. Lessons on Dakshina Baba had a uniquely marvellous way of teaching. He often taught His lessons through the amounts He took as Dakshina: 1) Rs. 2 for Nishtha and Saburi (Ref: Sathe and Radhabai Deshmukh, Sai Satcharita Chapters 18 and 19). 2) Rs. 4 often indicated the ego complex, i.e., Manas, Buddhi, Chitta and Ahankar and the need to surrender these at the Guru's feet. 3) Rs. 5 symbolises the senses, i.e. the Indriyas (e.g., The Marwari who demanded quick Brahma Gyan (Sai Satcharita 16 & 17). 4) Rs. 6 refers to the six internal enemies (e.g., Mrs. Tarkhad, Ref: Devotees' Experiences, written by Sri Narasimha Swamiji) 5) Rs. 9 refers to Nav Vidya Bhakti of the Bhakti Marg (e.g., Laxmibai and Anantrao Patankar and the parable of the mare, Sai Satcharita Ch. 42 and 21, respectively.) 6) Rs.15: Giving Dakshina here means deriving les¬sons from the scriptures and lodging them in the heart, where Baba resides. (e.g., Prof. Narke. Ref: Devotees' Experiences, written by Sri Narasimha Swamiji). 7) Rs.16.50: This indicated Sharanagati (i.e., total and complete surren¬der to Baba). Another interesting Leela on Dakshina is of Baba instructing Shyamdas Uddavesh Bua to read the 11 Skanda of Eknath Bhagwat. When Shyamdas went to Shirdi, Baba asked him for 11 rupees every day, and he readily gave this. He did this daily for 10 days. Every day he would go to the Dwarka Mai at about 3.30 in the afternoon, and only at that time would Baba ask for Dakshina. On the 11th day, as usual, Baba asked for Dakshina. Conveying to Baba that he had no money left, Shyamdas told Baba, “You tell me where I am to get the money from? Instead, I offer my 10 Indriyas and mind." To this, Baba replied, "These are already mine! Who are you to give them to me? Go to Bapusaheb Butti and borrow 11 rupees and give them to me." On hearing this, Shyamdas got up to go and get the money. He had hardly reached the gate of the Sabha Mandap, when Baba called out to him, "Arre Shyam, come here, and bring the 11 rupees later, but bring them from Bapusaheb Jog. Now be seated." After taking the Udi and Prasad, he went to the Wada and totally forgot about the 11 rupees. At 3.30 p.m., he went for Darshan, but Baba did not ask for the 11 rupees. In the evening, he said, "Go to Bapusaheb Jog and ask for 11 rupees, and bring him along with you." Shyamdas went to the Wada and found Bapusaheb Jog reading the Eknath Bhagwat to a few devotees. He told Jog what Baba had said. Both of them then went to the Masjid. Baba was getting ready to go out, and seeing them, He blessed them, but did not ask for Dakshina. Later, they returned to the Wada. The other devotees asked Shyamdas about the episode of the 11-rupee Dakshina, and what it meant. Shyamdas had not pondered over it. Thereafter, both of them went to Baba every day, but Baba did not ask for Dakshina. On the fourth day, it was in the evening when Baba asked Jog, "So how man...

The lecture was given by Swami Tattwamayananda on April 17, 2020.2nd chapter: verses 62, 63. 3rd chapter: verses 41, 42, 43. 4th chapter: verses 1, 2-You should discipline your senses – do this in the beginning itself rather than waiting for a strong blow. That way, you can get rid of the problem of desire, and not be enslaved by senses.-Desire means obsessive attachment to stimuli from senses, that we know will bring our downfall. We want to get out of it, but we are not able to take to a spiritual ideal, until it is too late. Gita helps us develop spiritual common sense to control our desires.-Intellectual desires, such as in arts and philosophy, can help in the beginning by diverting the mind from sensual pleasures. However, just intellectual pursuit is not enough as it can lead to cynicism. Intellectual desires can also be given a sublime direction.-There are two types of intellectual assertiveness: (1) Creative and constructive, which is grounded in intellectual honesty, as demonstrated by Swami Vivekananda, and (2) Cynicism, where people are stuck in a wheel asking the same questions, without making an effort to listen and get out of it.-An enlightened person is one who transcends happiness and misery, and who looks upon both of them with the same attitude. He is fully immersed in his true identity as the Atman. This gives him immense joy.-62nd and 63rd verse of second chapter explain how one falls in spiritual life. Those who keep thinking of sense objects develop a strong desire to enjoy them. They direct efforts in that direction. When these efforts do not succeed, they become angry, which leads to delusion, which then leads to total confusion of memory and degeneration of the mind.-Unless one can divert the senses towards creative channels, it brings destruction. To divert the mind, one needs to feed the mind with good food.-The Atman is superior to the intellect, which is superior to the mind, which is superior to the senses. Therefore, restrain your senses. By restraining the senses, and identifying with the Atman, one can destroy the obsession of desires.-Kathopanishad compares human life to a journey on a chariot. Atman is the traveler on the chariot, body is the chariot, intellect is the driver, mind is the reins, senses are the horses and the sense objects represent the path. Just as horses should not dictate terms to the rider, so also, sense organs should not dictate the terms to the mind.-Doctrine of karma should not be interpreted as fatalism. Rather, karma-yoga is an approach that enables us to do all our duties with full freedom, as the master of our senses, and with steady spiritual common sense.-Story of “Appointment in Samarra” is discussed to illustrate how the doctrine of karma can be wrongly interpreted.-Shankaracharya gives the example of an arrow which has left its bow, but that can change its direction because of a strong wind. Similarly, with our spiritual practices and by the grace of God, we can escape the consequences of unpleasant karma.-4th chapter of Gita continues the discussion of karma and yajna. The theme of this chapter can be described as: “Dissolving action in knowledge”.-Lord Krishna’s teachings come to us from two streams: (1) Narada Bhakti Sutras, which says that through spiritual surrender (Sharanagati), we can convert all actions into acts of worship. (2) Through Gita, which says that through Swadharma, we can convert every activity into spiritual practice.-Lord Krishna says that he first taught Yoga to Surya, who taught it to Manu, who then taught it to Ikshavaku. It has been handed down through the “Guru-shishya parampara”, an unbroken succession of teachers-disciples.-In course of time, this Yoga as lost - because those who were expected to practice it (for example, reigning monarchs) and lead by example, they were unable to control their senses and failed to practice it properly. Whatever they practiced came to be mistakenly known as Yoga.-Rajarshi is a person who has the dual qualities of a king (Rajatvam) and a saint (Rishitvam). As a king, he has great prosperity, dynamism and efficiency. As a saint, he has a calm attitude, can see far into things, and understands the limitations and impermanence of his wealth and powers. Janaka and Ashoka were examples of Rajarshis.

Verses: 31-35, 49-53This lecture was given by Swami Tattwamayananda at Stanford University on June 2, 2019. The lecture was hosted by the Stanford Hindu Students Association. -The highest bhakti ( is a natural effortless flow of the mind towards God. The six factors of surrender (शरणागति or प्रपत्ति) to God as described by Ramanuja are explained. For an advaitin, this bhakti is a means to the purification of the mind where Self-realization becomes inevitable.-As we evolve, the divine qualities that we meditate upon enter into our own character and we begin to see unity everywhere. We are no longer able to do harm to anybody.-The spiritual teacher, Guru, is the one who destroys our ignorance. Our spiritual nature is self-revealed. The analogy is that when a canal is cut, the water flows of itself.-Some of the qualities of a perfect spiritual teacher are enumerated: 1)well-versed in the scriptures 2)sinless 3)teacher with no desire 4)a knower of Brahman 5) peaceful 6)with all desires burnt out 7)in possession of completely motiveless compassion 8)a friend who naturally and effortlessly helps those who seek refuge-Real humility (प्रह्व) when approaching a teacher is not a slavish attitude but rather a polite dignified ability to stay one step below in order for wisdom to flow to the student. -An aspirant will feel an inner discontentment because they have realized the reality of their bondage and the possibility of realizing something much higher. It is actually a positive attitude (मुमुक्षुत्व), not a wretched attitude. -A strong warning is given that trying to practice sadhanas without respecting the teacher-disciple tradition (परम्परा) can lead to possible deviations or difficulties in spiritual life. The royal highway of following the teacher-disciple lineages is recommended.-The seven great questions about reality are asked. The guru congratulates the student for becoming a genuine Vedantic aspirant and achieved their life’s purpose (कृतकृत्य). Their whole lineage has become spiritually uplifted, blessed, and purified by the aspirant. This displays the sacred dimension of family ties.-The aspirant must make self-effort to remove their own spiritual bondage.
