This crossword was the embodiment of what makes the NYTimes Crossword so outstanding: a fantabulous theme amid a sea of novel and some LOL supporting clues. Just check out today's podcast, and then raise a glass in honor of David J. Kahn, creator of today's masterpiece. [Oh, and then raise it a second time in the direction of Will "Funnier! Make it funnier... and cleverer!!" Shortz, editor extraordinaire!.]Show note imagery: DEDE Allen, one of the greatest film editor's of all time.We love feedback! Mark Husen from Bellin Sports Medicine calls in to talk with the guys about their clinics and the wonderful etiquette they have. "We do listen to customers and we understand because I've been a customer". Then Beckett K is in the house!!! Dressed to the nines in Eagles gear. Bex doesn't think the Chiefs are unbeatable he thinks the refs are. He talks about raising $482,660 and 1/4 of a penny last night with Bill Jartz from the 36th Annual Wine & Cheese event for the Boys and Girls Club. An incredible night Bex predicts that the Chiefs will win despite not wanting them to. A congratulations goes to Beckket for being chosen the club to go to San Diego as well as the multiple upcoming events and interviews he'll be apart of. Beckett was 1 in 20 kids picked from all over the world to be involved in this program. Today's crossword is a cause for celebration. First, it was a great crossword (no surprise there -- check out the podcast for the deets), and second, it was edited by Will Shortz, the long time editor of the NYTimes crossword who had a stroke earlier this year. But demonstrating his indomitable spirit, Will has returned to the editor's chair, for which we are grateful. [Not that Joel Fagliano wasn't doing a fabulous job -- he was -- but it's just good to see Will's name back up on the marquee.]Show note imagery: UBE tiramisu, which looks deeeeeelish! We love feedback! This week, host June Thomas talks to Anna Shechtman, a crossword puzzle creator whose new book is called The Riddles of the Sphinx: Inheriting the Feminist History of the Crossword Puzzle. In the interview, Anna talks about her experience writing crossword puzzles as a teenager and then going on to work with New York Times puzzle maker Will Shortz. She also discusses the subjectivity of “common knowledge” and recalls debates with Shortz about which words and phrases were puzzle-worthy. After the interview, June and co-host Ronald Young Jr. talk more about crosswords and the ever-expanding pool of “common knowledge.” In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, Anna shares how much crossword puzzle creators get paid. She also discusses a more sensitive topic: her struggle with anorexia, which coincided with her early interest in crossword puzzles. A wonderful Wednesday crossword, and a debut for constructor Lindsay McBride (kudos and all that!). We especially enjoyed 67A, Like matryoshka dolls, NESTED (we just like to say matryoshka); 32D, Good, in Chinese HAO (now we know!); and 24D, "_________ Flux" (1990s animated sci-fi series), AEON (because it was such a great show!). There was (much) more, and deets are inside.Just a reminder, if you haven't solved today's puzzle and want to see the finished grid so you can follow along as you listen, then just go to xwordinfo.com, where the entire filled-out grid awaits! Finally, remember our Triplet Tuesday Contest is going strong! A gentler-than-usual Saturday crossword, possibly a sop to those still wandering about in a tryptophan fog. That's not to say it wasn't a fun experience - you are estopped from saying that about a grid that manages to work in 4D, Classical orator, RHETOR, 42A, Unfailingly loyal, RIDEORDIE, and 1A, Influential book sellers, BLURBS (nice one!).It's also Saturday, which means it's time to award our weekly JAMCOTWA (Jean And Mike Crossword of the Week Award).
